(CNN)A new study published Thursday by a leading non-profit organization that focuses on gun violence prevention found that there is a direct correlation in states with weaker gun laws and higher rates of gun deaths, including homicides, suicides and accidental killings. The study by Everytown for Gun Safety determined that California had the strongest gun laws in the country. Hawaii topped the list with the lowest rate of gun deaths in the country while Mississippi led the country with both the weakest gun laws and highest rate of gun deaths. "What this project does, is show what we've been saying for years: Gun laws save lives," said Nick Suplina, senior vice president of law and policy at Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund. "We think this is going to be a really important tool for lawmakers, reporters and advocates that have been looking for the kind of visual tool that can make that case clearly." GARLAND, Texas (AP) — An attorney for a man accused of driving his son to a Dallas-area gas station store where the 14-year-old is accused of fatally shooting three teens and wounding a fourth says the father didn’t know his son had a gun. Attorney Heath Harris told The Dallas Morning News he believes evidence will show that 33-year-old Richard Acosta, who is charged with capital murder, is innocent. “Our position is he didn’t do anything to solicit or encourage his son to do this,” Harris said. Acosta’s son, Abel Elias Acosta, has been on the run since the Dec. 26 shooting in Garland. Police have charged the teen with capital murder and warned that he is armed and dangerous. Richard Acosta, who surrendered to police a day after the shooting, remained in Dallas County jail Tuesday on $3 million bond. CARSON CITY, Nev. -- Nevada's Supreme Court ruled gun manufacturers cannot be held responsible for the deaths in the 2017 mass shooting on the Las Vegas Strip because a state law shields them from liability unless the weapon malfunctions. The parents of a woman who was among the 60 people killed in the shooting at a packed music festival filed a wrongful death suit against Colt Manufacturing Co. and several other gun manufacturers in July 2019.The suit said the gun companies "knowingly manufactured and sold weapons designed to shoot automatically because they were aware their AR-15s could be easily modified with bump stocks to do so, thereby violating federal and state machinegun prohibitions."Stephen Paddock used an AR-15 with a bump stock when he fired 1,049 rounds in just 10 minutes on the crowd of 22,000 people from his suite in a casino-resort tower before he killed himself. When mass shootings erupted earlier this year in Georgia, Colorado and Indiana, there was a sad sense about it to many Californians. Look at their gun laws. No waiting period to buy firearms. No assault weapons ban. But the Bay Area just saw its deadliest mass shooting late last month, the second this year in California, a state with the nation’s strictest laws on gun ownership. The San Jose light rail yard massacre reignited the country’s gun violence debate, with cries for new federal laws countered by observations that California’s many restrictions didn’t stop the latest killings. So who’s right? A Bay Area News Group analysis of recent gun death data from 2015-2019 shows there’s a strong correlation between strict state gun laws and lower overall firearm fatality rates. But nearly two-thirds of those deaths were suicides, and only about a third were homicides. Looking just at homicides, there’s a wide range of gun death rates among states with weak as well as strict gun laws. A similar picture emerges when looking just at mass shootings in recent years. ...

In the days after the shooting, Tamayo’s survival also was very much in doubt. She spent days unconscious, her body functioning with the assistance of machines. Dr. Michael Lekawa, one of the UCI Health trauma surgeons who treated Tamayo, noted Wednesday that her...
In a year that saw a social justice movement, a pandemic, and an increase in violent crime, police related shooting deaths in Florida in 2020 were up 51.5 % when compared to the previous five years. In contrast, police related shootings nationwide were up just 3.4%. The numbers come from The Washington Post police related shooting database which began logging information in 2015. The data show that from 2015 to 2019 Florida averaged approximately 61.4 police related shooting deaths per year. In 2020, there were 93 police related shooting deaths, a 51.5% increase. Nationwide from 2015 to 2019 there were an average of 985.6 police related shootings. In 2021 there were 1,021 police related shootings, a 3.4% increase. In addition, no other state reported anywhere near the increase that was reported in Florida. For example, among the other states with more than 50 police related shootings in 2020,  California had an increase of 0.3% in 2020 when compared to the 2015-2019 average and Texas had a 6.3% decrease....
Florida-based attorney Benjamin Crump has a pattern of making inflammatory and false statements about deaths that were later protested by the Black Lives Matter movement. Crump has represented Jacob Blake and the families of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and Breonna Taylor. Here are some examples of false or unfounded claims the lawyer has spread. Trayvon Martin Crump first rose to prominence when he represented the family of Trayvon Martin, who was killed in 2012 by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman. Zimmerman was acquitted of murder charges in Martin’s death in 2013 after defense attorneys argued that Zimmerman acted in self-defense. Crump asserted on CNN that “there was something that night [the Sanford Police Department and Zimmerman] conspired to cover up” after surveillance video showed Zimmerman entering a Sanford police station with a gash on the back of his head. Michael Brown Brown was fatally shot in 2014 after attacking Ferguson, Missouri police officer Darren Wilson. “Although some witnesses state that Brown held his hands up at shoulder level with his palms facing outward for a brief moment, these same witnesses...

VIDEO2:2302:23Former Missouri State Highway Patrol captain on Ohio shootingThe News with Shepard Smith Former Missouri State Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson said that the fatal police shooting of 16-year-old Ma'Khia Bryant in Columbus, Ohio, as well as Derek Chauvin's guilty verdict in the death of George Floyd, should be taken as watershed moments to create changes in policing across the country.  "I think we need to look at the whole system. Create a network where bad officers, if they're put in this network, they can't continue to go on from police department to police department," said Johnson. "There needs to be a national registry." Authorities released body cam footage Tuesday, the same day as the shooting, that appeared to show an officer in Columbus shoot and kill Bryant, who was armed with a knife. The officer was responding to a 911 call. In the video, Bryant is fighting with another girl, then appears to lunge with the knife in hand, and that's when the officer intervenes and shoots. Johnson told CNBC's "The News with Shepard Smith" that officers have to...
Reuters April 21, 2021 0 Comments Former Minneapolis policeman Derek Chauvin was found guilty of murder and manslaughter on Tuesday in the choking death of George Floyd in May 2020, which was recorded on video by a bystander and touched off global protests over racial injustice and excessive use of force by police. Since 2005, about 140 non-federal police officers in the United States have been charged with murder or manslaughter resulting from an on-duty shooting, according to data compiled by Philip Stinson, a criminologist at Bowling Green State University. The conviction rate in those cases is about 46%, although some convictions were for lesser offenses. The following are details of some high-profile trials of police officers in the United States: GUILTY VERDICTS – Former Minneapolis officer Mohamed Noor was convicted in 2019 of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter for killing 40-year-old Justine Ruszczyk Damond, a white Australian, outside her home near Minneapolis in 2017. Noor said he was startled by a loud noise when he shot Damond, who had approached the patrol car to report a possible sexual...
After a gunman killed eight workers and himself at an Indianapolis FedEx center last week – the city’s third mass shooting this year – the chief deputy coroner spoke of the toll the deaths had taken on her coworkers. “It is a very difficult job,” said Alfarena McGinty of the Marion County Coroner’s Office. “The staff is definitely suffering and is going to need long-term counseling.” John Fudenberg knows such strain all too well. In 2017, after a gunman killed 58 people at an outdoor music festival in Las Vegas, Fudenberg’s staff at the Clark County Coroner’s Office was responsible for telling families their loved ones were dead. He said they delivered the devastating news several times an hour in the days following the deadliest mass shooting in US history. “I saw several employees experience what I believe was PTSD and trauma,” said Fudenberg, who retired as coroner last year. Within months of the shooting, which had a final death toll of 60, five full-time staff quit or retired. The recent flurry of mass shootings in the United States...

Stephen Nicholas Broderick, 41, was arrested early Monday after deputies tracked him down following two 911 calls about a man walking down a road in an Austin suburb about 32 kilometers from the scene of the weekend attack. Broderick, who had a pistol in his waistband, was taken into custody without any further complications. "I'm truly heartbroken that a former Travis County Sheriff's Office Deputy is the suspect in such a horrific incident," Sheriff Sally Hernandez said in a statement. The shooting happened around noon Sunday at an apartment complex near a popular shopping area called the Arboretum. Authorities described the shooting as a "domestic situation," and Interim Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon said that Broderick knew and targeted the victims — two females and a male who were pronounced dead at the scene. Broderick investigated property crimes with the office until he was arrested in June and charged with sexually assaulting a child, according to Kristen Dark, a spokeswoman for the...

Loading the player... For the second time in less than a week, a 21-year-old man used a gun purchased legally in the United States to massacre people simply working or visiting a business. The mass shootings in Colorado and Georgia are giving new urgency to state efforts to enact gun restrictions, even while showing how hard it can be to prevent a tragedy. A gunman opened fire Monday at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado, with a weapon that resembles an AR-15 rifle, killing 10 people before he was captured. He bought the Ruger AR-556 pistol on March 16, the same day another 21-year-old man on the other side of the country killed eight people, six of them women of Asian descent, at Atlanta-area massage businesses. President Joe Biden called for action on gun reform after the two mass shootings, and U.S. Rep. Joe Neguse, who represents Boulder, asked Biden to ban imported semi-automatic weapons and high-capacity magazines. But legislation in Congress faces an uphill climb, and it’s been more than two decades since any major federal gun control laws have...
