and my family:

latest news at page 1:
One at a time, our warders led us into a makeshift infirmary where men in lab coats were waiting. There was no choice.  I was told by one of the superintendents: ‘You must be vaccinated. You’re 50 years old. Your immune system isn’t what it used to be. If you don’t do this, you might get the flu.’ Terrified of reprisals if I didn’t agree, I signed a document giving my permission. One of the men jabbed the vein in my arm. I was so stupid. I had been a prisoner in a Xinjiang ‘re-education’ camp for a year. The only horizon I had was the line of barbed wire that cut us off from the rest of the world. Other women in the internment camp had told me that their periods had stopped shortly after such ‘vaccinations’. The younger women wept and grieved. They had hoped to start families once they were released from the camp. Past the menopause myself, I tried to comfort them, though a horrific thought was already growing inside me: were they sterilising us? Now,...

She comes from a very religious family and we have hidden a lot of aspects about our marriage," he said on Reddit. "We have some contact with them, but only see them on holidays and special occasions, like weddings or baby showers.  "One of the biggest things they disapproved of was not having our wedding in a church. It was such a big deal so we now hide aspects of our marriage, like the fact we are going to be childfree. "One thing the family did not know about is that she...

Dear Amy: Six years ago, after a gathering with my husband of 30 years, his mom, his two sisters and a brother-in-law, one of the sisters wrote me a scathing letter. Amy Dickinson  In it, she enumerated all of my faults as she perceived them, said I do not contribute anything to the family, and said that she and the rest of the family despise me. She admitted that I have a wonderful marriage, although she didn’t understand how that was possible. The letter felt so toxic, so vicious and so unreal that I shredded it immediately. But its impact has lasted. It showed signs of different writing styles and voices, so I’m pretty sure more than one person contributed to it. My husband’s mother has since died. He and his sisters speak on the phone a few times a year and communicate on social media, but we haven’t visited. Related Articles Ask Amy: Should I cut ties to my insulting ex-colleague? Dear Amy: “Teacher in a Quandary” reached out regarding a rare collection of objects that were left behind by one of her students. Amy Dickinson  I graduated from high school in 1998. While I was learning about World War II in my 11th-grade U.S. history class, my grandfather, a veteran of that war, gave me several priceless items from his time serving our country. I chose to bring these items into school to share with my teacher and classmates, and, sadly, I failed to bring them home. For many years my family asked about those items, and I carried a lot of guilt with me for my lack of responsibility with such an important part of history and my grandfather’s story. A few years ago, the high school that I attended began a major renovation, which caused many teachers to move from classrooms that they had taught in for decades. One evening, I was waiting in a hallway outside my young daughter’s classroom, and my U.S. history teacher passed by. Related Articles Ask Amy: My children won’t attend...
“I’ve got something I’d like to say.” That’s what I usually offer up as a preamble, as I try to get the attention of my kids and other family members gathered around the Thanksgiving table. It usually takes a couple of attempts, but once we’re all on the same page, I offer words of thanks for my ancestors. I talk about how brave they must have been to leave the communities of their birth—which were at least familiar, despite the hardship, discrimination, and all-too-common violence they faced—and come to a land where they didn’t speak the language, didn’t know the culture, and, in many cases, didn’t know a soul. In this offering, I mention the family names of the people who came and the places they came from. We’ve done quite a bit of genealogical research—on my side and my wife’s side of the family—and are lucky to have as much information as we do. My goal is to give my kids a sense of who their ancestors were, and what they went through to give us a chance to...

Amanda Knox has called on Rudy Guede to 'restore her wrongly damaged reputation' and take full responsibility for the murder of Meredith Kercher as he completed his sentence for the killing. Guede, 34, was formally released on Tuesday 14 years after the grisly murder and sexual assault of 21-year-old Kercher in Perugia, Italy, in November 2007.  He was convicted in 2008 for the murder that also saw Kercher's American flatmate Knox and her Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito jailed but then sensationally acquitted. Guede was found guilty after his DNA was discovered on Kercher's body despite his claims that he was in the bathroom listening to music when she was killed. In a thread posted on Twitter, Knox wrote on Tuesday that she wants Guede to help clear her name by admitting he acted alone in the murder. She wrote: 'Rudy Guede, the man who killed Meredith Kercher and falsely accused me, just had his sentence reduced yet again. He is now free, and his relationship with the Italian justice system is definitively over. How do you imagine I feel? Amanda Knox...
Although the royal family has publicly advocated for the protection of wildlife, it is no secret that trophy hunting is deeply ingrained in the royal family’s past and has been their long-time twisted and cruel tradition. While trophy hunting is not as illegal as poaching, there is still a lot of controversy around the topic. Some people may argue that trophy hunting contributes to conservation efforts, but the truth is that many animal species have become at risk for extinction, and the overall idea is counterproductive to conservation efforts. Not only is trophy hunting inhumane and cruel, but it harms the environment as well. On average, more than 125,000 animals are killed each year for trophies. “Reports found that between 2005 and 2014, more than 1.26 million wildlife trophies were imported to the U.S. alone.” Many times, the animals targeted for trophies are at risk of being endangered, or already are. For example, lion populations have been shockingly reduced by trophy hunting. When these keystone species, which other species in an ecosystem largely depend on are removed, it can send...

The 17-year-old boy allegedly tied the family dog to a tree and began slicing them with swords. The family dog had gone missing and was found close to the house in a wooded area. The dog had been stabbed and cut and had parts of their face missing. The situation seemed to line up with what the boy had said, and the dog showed signs of having been tied up. (CNN)I'm a Navy veteran, currently serving in the Reserves, and the son of an Army veteran. My father's brother served two tours as a Marine Corps infantryman in Vietnam and a good family friend also completed a deployment to Vietnam with the Navy. Veterans Day carries a special meaning to me but also one that evolved over the years. Jeremy Butler I spent my childhood celebrating this day with my family, learning about my father's time in the service and the sacrifices he and others made for the country, and sharing in the collective, abundant pride that we felt towards those who answered the call to serve. Listening to my father's stories about what his service meant to him, and about other men and women who served our nation, played a huge role in my decision to join the Navy in 1999. While Veterans Day will forever be a cause for celebration and a time to honor the sacrifices of veterans, I view this day a little differently now than I did when I was a child. As an...

Dear Amy: When I was a young woman of 20 and returned home for a visit after basic training in the military, my father had too much to drink one night. Amy Dickinson  He asked me to sit beside him after my mom went to bed. It didn’t feel quite right, but I sat next to him. Then, my dad tried to French kiss me. I got away from him and avoided him the next day. I didn’t visit my parents again for a while because I was shipped overseas. I thought about it later and wondered if he even remembered doing this? Maybe he blacked out from drinking. Then, my aunt (my mom’s sister) who is only slightly older than me confessed that my dad did the same thing to her. (I did not disclose it happened to me too.)
