On Saturday night, Aaron Rodgers left Lambeau Field in a daze. Whether it’s for the final time remains unknown, but the loss is crushing. Where to go from here? The No. 1 seed, home-field in a building where the Green Bay Packers hadn’t lost all year, and a beat-up, warm-weather team coming into Lambeau Field on a 12-degree night. Aaron Rodgers, the presumptive back-to-back MVP, had it teed up. And then the Packers lost. In a stunning NFC Divisional round game on Saturday night, the San Francisco 49ers toppled the top-seeded Packers, 13-10, winning on a last-second, 45-yard field goal by Robbie Gould. At the game’s outset, Rodgers led an opening drive of 10 plays and 69 yards for a touchdown, accounting for 54 yards through the air. Afterwards, save for a busted coverage leading to a 75-yard catch-and-run for running back Aaron Jones, Rodgers was 15-of-23 for 96 yards. While it’s fair to point at rancid special teams play — they had a 39-yard field goal blocked before giving up a crushing blocked punt touchdown with 4:41 remaining in...

Andre Hope, a juror on the Jussie Smollett case, said he thought it was odd that Smollett put the noose back on for police after the hoax attack. Hope, 63, was the only black juror. He said Smollett's narrative did not make sense and noted that he was still uncertain about a motive. "As an African American person, I'm not putting that noose back on at all," Hope said in an interview with ABC 7 . SUNDAY POLITICAL SHOWS IGNORE JUSSIE SMOLLETT VERDICT Smollett was found guilty last Thursday on five out of six charges for lying to officials over a hate crime he staged against himself. Smollett allegedly hired two brothers to conduct a fake attack on him. He claimed assailants tied a noose around his neck, poured bleach on him, and beat him. After police questioned the brothers and went through phone records, authorities charged Smollett with filing a false police report. Regular readers know of my interest in “regime change.” That’s the term I’ve been using to describe when one party and its ideas prevail among a majority of Americans until they fail to meet the political demands of the moment. That’s the start of a period of transition, during which decadence, instability and decay reign, until the other party and its ideas prevail among a majority. “Regime change” is another way of describing what some political scientists call “the cycles of political time.” The theory is that political time is not linear, moving in one direction that, as many Americans believe, leads us toward some kind of enlightened end. Instead of political time progressing, as many liberals believe, it moves in cycles so there is no end at which point society is much improved comparatively. Instead, old problems become current, current problems become old. History doesn’t repeat itself. It’s just familiar. This is important to understand. The Supreme Court stands ready to strike down Roe. Republicans in states like Georgia and Wisconsin are creating conditions by which legislators can steal...

After CNN anchor Chris Cuomo was fired from the scandal-plagued liberal network on Saturday night, many on Twitter were quick to give their reaction. Cuomo was fired after "a respected law firm" conducted an internal review of his involvement in helping his brother, disgraced former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, in his defense regarding sexual harassment allegations. CNN's announcement noted that during the internal review "additional information" was found. Reaction poured in moments after the announcement was made. "So glad we will never see this again," Fox News' Janice Dean, whose in-laws died following Andrew Cuomo's COVID nursing home scandal in 2020, tweeted following the announcement. Conservative political strategist Caleb Hull tweeted that Cuomo should have been fired "a long time ago." "Chris Cuomo should have been fired a long time ago when he tested positive for COVID, left his house anyway, got into a fight with a cyclist, and then making a spectacle of him leaving quarantine for the ‘first time' when we all knew the truth," Hull said. Washington Examiner reporter Jerry Dunleavy said on Twitter that Cuomo...
THIAGO struck a beauty from 30 yards - and then said he’d scored better goals in his career. But when the ex-Bayern Munich star was asked if he had scored anything ‘prettier’ before, he came up with a side-splitting reaction. He said with a smile on BT Sport: “I think, yeah!” Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was also part of the post-match interview and the England international could not hide his amazement at his team-mate’s answer. He chipped in: “It’s alright for some isn’t it!” Injuries and Covid issues have prevented Thiago from working his magic for much of his 14 months at Liverpool since moving from Bayern. Getty Calvin Ridley #18 of the Atlanta Falcons. On Sunday, Oct. 31 versus the Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons star wide receiver, Calvin Ridley, was deemed inactive due to personal reasons––marking the second time that happened this season. His unknown absence raised a lot of questions and concerns. However, Falcons received some clarity in the second half after Ridley announced that he would be stepping away from football until further notice: “These past few weeks have been very challenging and as much as I’d like to be on the field competing with my teammates, I need to step away from football at this time and focus on my mental wellbeing,” Ridley wrote on Twitter. “This will help me be the best version of myself now and in the future. I want to thank my teammates, the entire Atlanta Falcons organization, our great fans, my friends, and my family for all of their support during this time.” His decision struck a least a week of open and honest mental health discussion across the NFL, but the hard topic continues to linger.Former NFL...
An investigation is underway after one person was killed and seven others hospitalized in a chain-reaction crash on a stretch of Interstate 91 in Connecticut. It happened just after 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6 in New Haven County on the southbound side in Meriden. Connecticut State Police say six vehicles were traveling in the right lane when traffic started to slow down, and one of the vehicles struck another from the rear, causing the driver to lose control, roll over, and land at an uncontrolled final rest in the right lane/right shoulder.  The led to three other vehicle collisions from the rear, police said. One of the drivers involved, Jarquis Tyrell Johnson, age 30, of Middletown, who was operating a 2011 Ford Fusion, was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said. Those hospitalized have non-life-threatening injuries, police said. At the time of the crash, the weather was clear under daylight skies, the roadway was dry, and traffic was moderate and moving at a steady flow, state police noted.  Any witnesses to the crash are asked to contact Trooper Gina Bavolacco of the Connecticut State Police...
Q: I’m over 70, and I really can’t drive faster than the speed limit on freeways. Are they now closed to me? Mostly, yes. Susan Bonnette, San Jose A: Tell us more. Q: My first strategy is to avoid speeders altogether. Second strategy is to drive only very early in the morning, preferably on a Sunday. Third is to keep up with traffic, up to the 65-mph limit, but stay in the slow lane. Should be OK, right? I am healthy, sharp, but aware of my slower reaction times. Susan Bonnette A: You sound like a very wise driver. Q: I tried it last Sunday at 8 a.m., San Jose to Berkeley. It was an open road. But speeders took full advantage of it, some seeming to go at least 100 miles an hour, passing me in a blur. Just stay in the slow lane, I thought! But no one wanted to get behind me and were dive-bombing me to exit. Sudden brake slamming for me. Not a good lane for someone with slower reaction times. OK, one lane in...

Linebacker Chris Spielman was one of the toughest players in the NFL when he was playing for the Detroit Lions.  He also isn't afraid to let his emotions show, and he did just that when the Lions had a creative way of letting him know he was being inducted into the team's ring of honor.  Spielman was brought in to read a message that the team would be honoring some of the team's former legends during a homecoming event for an Oct. 31 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Legendary Indiana Pacer shooting guard Reggie Miller had the most genuine reaction to making the NBA 75 Team as his TNT coworkers told him on live tv. To commemorate its illustrious 75-year history, the NBA has released its official NBA 75 Team. Thousands of players over seven decades, but only 75 have made the final cut. While fiery debates are already taking place about the names left off the list, one name that was included was rather unexpected — the NBA superstar himself couldn’t believe he was on it. When Ernie Johnson looped in Miller, who has been a TNT NBA analysts since 2005, to their Warriors-Clippers pregame coverage, Johnson cleverly broke the news that Miller and Curry had both made the NBA 75 list. Nick Saban is used to having tumultuous exchanges with reporters during press conferences, but the Alabama football coach found it difficult to lash out at a journalist who has a baby in their arms. Joining the press conference via Zoom, The Athletic’s Aaron Suttles was multitasking as he asked Saban a question about linebacker Henry To’oto’o. But Saban couldn’t ignore that Suttles was sitting on camera with his young child. “I have a question for you, first of all,” Saban replied to Suttles. “Did I finally get to meet the boss?” “I apologize, my wife is not home yet so I’m having to pull dad duty,” Suttles said, before apologizing to the Alabama head coach a second time. “This is the best behavior I’ve seen you on since I’ve been here,” Saban joked. “No, you don’t have to apologize. If this is the way it’s going to be, I’d like for him to be there all the time.” Saban is known for his short fuse that often presents itself on the sideline or in front of reporters,...
Getty Head coach Matt LaFleur of the Green Bay Packers watches play from the sideline in the first half against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on October 17, 2021 in Chicago, Illinois. Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has seen more than his fair share of defensive players sidelined with injuries this season, but the possibility of losing the driving force of their defensive line was enough to leave him nauseous. Following Week 6’s win in Chicago, LaFleur praised defensive tackle Kenny Clark for his impressive performance against the Bears and spoke about the scary moment toward the end of the first quarter when Clark was left shaken up after a big run from Bears running back Khalil Herbert. “Kenny Clark showed up big time on multiple occasions,” LaFleur said in Sunday’s postgame. “When he was down, I really thought I was going to throw up.” Fortunately for the Packers — and the field — there was no vomit involved. Clark was able to walk off the field under his own power and returned to the...

The coach has come out and apologized but this saga is far from over for him. It remains to be seen what will happen to Gruden considering he wasn’t an NFL employee at the time of the email in 2011. CNBC’s Squawk Box expressed astonishment on Friday with September’s jobs report, which came less than halfway to meeting projections. The moment began with Steve Liesman, who looked down at the report and said, “194,” reflecting the 194,000 new jobs reported over the last month. “Whoa!” Becky Quick responded. “I see 194,000? That is real low,” Liesman said. “Let me go to the jobless rate — wow, begin decline, 4.8 percent, 5.1 was expected. Let me … see if I can find where the jobs were, and I think in this case, where the jobs weren’t.” The Dow Jones estimate projected 500,000 new jobs would emerge in September, more than 300,000 more than the Friday’s number released by the Labor Department. Private payrolls increased by 317,000, but government payrolls declined 123,000. The so-called jobless rate declined, as Liesman noted, though it excludes Americans who hold part-time jobs but cannot find full-time work, as well as “discouraged workers” who have quit looking for work. The number was 8.5 percent with those groups included, a pandemic-low. “It was definitely a weaker number than expected,” Liesman added....

Everything will depend on the degrees indicated by the thermometer, but in light of what happened in the last heat wave and taking into account the warnings issued by the General Directorate of Traffic … yes: driving in very hot weather can be as dangerous as driving drunk. High temperatures reduce our abilities at the wheel and this causes our driving to be unsafe. This is how excess heat influences when we get in the car. The DGT recommends keep the cabin between 21 and 24 degrees, both in summer and winter. Within that fork we can circulate comfortably and safely: to this we must add that we will tire less. What happens if the interior of the car surpasses those barriers? Our driving powers will not be the same. In the summer months it is normal for the cabin to exceed the established maximum, something as dangerous as getting behind the wheel having consumed alcohol. At 30 and 35 degrees When the temperature inside the vehicle is higher than 30 degrees, we lose 10% of our attention, errors...

In a forgettable 1980 game between the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins, NBC tried the unthinkable.  Dec. 20, 1980: The only time an NFL game was seen, but not heard. Even in a contest with no meaning outside of gambling and draft positions, it’s hard to imagine someone in Ohlmeyer’s position taking such a chance. The NFL has become a multi-billion dollar industry with carefully crafted narratives and graphics packages going into each game. Today, the reaction would be overwhelming with social media ruling the reaction. In 1980, the league was still burgeoning even as it had clearly become America’s pastime. The NFL and its partners weren’t under scrutiny on a consistent basis, with football still seen as a game played by wealthy men, but not ones enjoying generational wealth. In short, the National Football League was big-time with the occasional small-time feel, able to experiment without seismic blowback. More than 40 years ago, NBC and Ohlmeyer had some fun with a bad hand. They provided an indelible memory, one without a soundtrack.

Matthew McConaughey had a genius idea for watching his first Lincoln commercial. The former “True Detective” superstar has been the face of Lincoln for several years, and the partnership has resulted in some of the best commercials in TV history. Getty Brooklyn guards Kyrie Irving and James Harden while playing the Detroit Pistons at Little Caesars Arena on February 09, 2021 in Detroit, Michigan. For the first time since February, the Brooklyn Nets have lost two games in a row. They no longer hold the top seed in the Eastern Conference and are just 2.5 games ahead of the Milwaukee Bucks for second place. Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, and James Harden have all missed a plethora of games for several reasons during this NBA season. The longest layoff of the three stars came just before the All-Star break when KD injured his hamstring against the Golden State Warriors on February 13. What was originally supposed to be a short-term injury ended up costing the Nets star 23 games after further imaging. The Nets’ three-headed monster of Harden, Irving, and Durant has still only played a whopping seven games together. They have a record of 5-2 in those games. Before you buckle up, get yourself a good playlist and a strong cup of Joe. A new experiment has found a link between listening to rap music and having strong coffee with better driving skills. UK-based behavioral science consultancy CX Lab and car insurance company U Switch collaborated on the experiment, in which they virtually measured 103 drivers’ reaction times under various conditions.  “Our participants all watched a number of clips taken from the official DVSA Hazard Perception Test, where they had to click a button upon spotting a hazard,” reads a report about the experiment and its findings on U Switch’s website. “After establishing their baseline reaction time, we had the participants complete the test again, but this time introduced one of the following factors.” Those factors were drinking a strong cup of coffee 20 minutes before taking the test, listening to an audio track of noisy children and listening to rap, techno, heavy metal, classical, jazz or R&B music.  Researchers found that caffeine had the biggest impact, leading drivers to stop an average of 26 yards earlier...

Caffeine consumption and listening to rap music could increase a driver's reaction times behind the wheel, a new study indicates.  The lab-based report found evidence of noisy children in the car heightening a motorist's hazard perception levels. Women are quicker at spotting dangers on the road than men and R&B music is likely to slow your response time, the study conducted by a behavioural science consultancy also suggests.  Rap music and coffee claimed to sharpen a driver's reaction time: A new study has suggested listening to different genres of music and consuming caffeine cut stopping distances The trial was carried out by UK-based CX Lab in partnership with Uswitch. It used videos from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency's Hazard Perception Test - which was first introduced to the driving theory test in October 2002 - to understand the impact of music, caffeine and children on motorists' reaction times. Some 16 different clips from the test were shown to a sample of more than 100 drivers on a screen - split equally with men and women - who were...
