CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Kihei Clark scored 15 points as Virginia turned in a wire-to-wire win over Louisville, 64-52 Monday night, rebounding from a double-digit loss to North Carolina State. Virginia continued a season-long trend. The Cavaliers have won back-to-back games once this season, knocking off Syracuse and Clemson, and have yet to lose back-to-back games. The Cavaliers jumped to a quick, 5-0 lead to start the game after Clark nailed a 3-pointer, then pushed the lead to 22-5 nine minutes into the contest. Louisville battled back and cut its deficit to just four points, 45-41, but could never quite catch Virginia. Clark’s 3-pointer with just under eight minutes to go pushed the lead back into double digits, 52-41, but Malik Williams and Jarrod West each hit from 3-point range to get back within five, 52-47. Kadin Shedrick had back-to-back dunks and Armaan Franklin had a three-point play to put the Cavaliers back in front by 12. Reece Beekman spearheaded a Virginia attack, doling out 11 assists as the Cavaliers put up 20 assists on 24 made baskets. Clark finished...

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies are trying to persuade a man on a rooftop in a residential neighborhood of Walnut Park to surrender after authorities responded to reports of possible gunshots fired shortly after 5 a.m. The man could be seen sitting atop a single-story home in the 2500 block of Sale Place in unincorporated Walnut Park, south of Huntington Park, according to Deputy Trina Schrader with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Although several news outlets reported the incident involved an active shooter, Schrader said there were no reports indicating that from the department. Aerial footage from KTLA-TV Channel 5 showed a man lying on his back on the rooftop and what appeared to be a weapon lying on the front lawn. SWAT team members were standing nearby next to an armored vehicle. This is a developing story.

Vice President Kamala Harris flies from Los Angeles to Milwaukee on Monday for the second part of a trip to promote the administration's infrastructure package - as the White House says it plans to do more to trumpet its achievements amid dire polling and legislative deadlock. She will visit a nonprofit to meet workers replacing lead pipes, one of the initiatives she has championed. It is the second part of a trip that included announcing $1.3 billion in funding to prevent and restore damage from wildfires on Friday - before her team was disrupted by a positive COVID test. It means several of her aides will have to travel back separately, missing the trip to Wisconsin.  A White House official said up to 10 million households still connect to water through lead pipes; 400,000 schools and childcare facilities are at risk of exposure to lead; and 24 million housing units have lead in their paint.  'Because of inequitable infrastructure development and disinvestment, low-income communities and communities of color are disproportionately exposed to these risks,' said the official. She left thousands of fans bitterly disappointed after pulling out of a series of concerts in Las Vegas.  Adele even addressed many of them directly on tearful FaceTime calls after the last-minute decision. But, according to reports, it seems the singer is far from blameless in the collapse of the Caesars Palace shows with just 24 hours' notice. Sources in Las Vegas say that her team were a 'total nightmare' during preparations for her three-month residency.  And they claim there is now 'friction' between the 33-year-old and her management team, which is 'adding to the stress level'. Adele's team were reportedly a 'total nightmare' to work with during preparations for the Las Vegas shows, possibly contributing to their last-minute collapse Extraordinarily, it is said that Adele and her team insisted on replacing the state-of-the art sound system at the venue's Colosseum theatre with their own and also demanded that they install an entirely new video system. The existing system was considered good enough by previous acts such as Madonna, Mariah Carey and Celine Dion – none of whom is known for...
BERLIN (AP) — Bayern Munich completely outclassed Hertha Berlin to restore its six-point lead in the Bundesliga with a 4-1 win on Sunday. The visitors should have won by more with Bayern having a host of missed chances. It also saw two goals rightly ruled out through VAR. Corentin Tolisso and Thomas Müller scored in the first half before Leroy Sané and Serge Gnabry rewarded Bayern’s dominance in the second. Substitute Jurgen Ekkelenkamp scored seconds after coming on for Hertha’s consolation goal, but the scoreline didn’t reflect a game in which the home team had four attempts on goal compared to the visitors’ 30. Leipzig defeated Wolfsburg 2-0 in the early game, stretching the visitors’ winless run to 11-games across all competitions. ___ More AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports ___ Ciarán Fahey on Twitter: https://twitter.com/cfaheyAP Copyright © 2022 The Associated Press. New York, NY (CNN)As if consumers weren't being squeezed enough by rising prices for a wide range of goods, this month's blast of winter weather will mean that many Americans could face record high heating costs this year.Cold weather, ice and snow have blanketed much of the United States in recent days and more is expected to hit soon, including in normally warm weather states such as North and South Carolina. That could send already sky high heating bills up even more, due mainly to spiking fuel prices.According to forecasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, US homes will actually use slightly less heat than last winter, when a cold snap in much of the central part of the country sent heating demand up about 3% from the prior year. But the significant increase in the costs of all types of heating fuel means that US households will pay between $700 and $1,700 more for heat this winter, depending upon where they live and what type of fuel they use.Natural gas, which is used to heat nearly half of...
Police in one Fairfield County city are warning residents of a string of overdose deaths linked to the use of fentanyl-lace opiates. Captain Richard Conklin of the Stamford Police Department said on Sunday, Jan. 23, police are investigating a "string of overdose deaths that appear to be due to the use of fentanyl-laced opiates."  While there currently is no evidence that these three deaths of city residents are directly related, the department is warning the public with regard to the rapid and deadly effects of fentanyl, Conklin said. Fentanyl is widely prevalent in the illicit drug supply chain, oftentimes, without the knowledge of persons purchasing and using these drugs, which include, but are not limited to, heroin, cocaine, marijuana, and counterfeit pills often represented as prescription medication, he added. "We would also like to remind those who are struggling with drug addiction, and those who love someone struggling with addiction, that help is available through local organizations such as Liberation Programs, whether the need is treatment or a lifesaving opioid overdose kit containing Narcan. Awareness can save you, or someone you...
MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart confronted Congressman Jim Clyburn (D-SC) about the current sentiment that an increasing number of Americans want the Republican Party to regain control of the House of Representatives. Clyburn spoke to Capehart on this week’s edition of The Sunday Show. The South Carolina congressman defended the Democratic Party’s agenda as Joe Biden’s presidency enters its second year. Clyburn pronounced the GOP a “cult” to former President Donald Trump, but Capehart replied by noting that NBC’s latest polling doesn’t look very good for the Democrats’ political prospects. The poll shows Democrats have only a 1 percent lead over the GOP in terms of which party should control Congress, and Capehart noted that the numbers have been “inching up” for months in Republicans’ favor. “So despite what you saying about not having a governing partner,” Capehart said, “the American people seem to be slowly but surely thinking ‘Hey, maybe the Republicans should be given a shot, given the gavel back in the House.'” Clyburn attributed the problem to messaging — arguing that Democrats need to be more focused...

LEICESTER, England (AP) — Danny Welbeck recovered a point for Brighton as Leicester threw away another lead. The striker’s downward header from Neal Maupay’s cross beat goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel via the post in the 82nd minute to seal a 1-1 draw on Sunday. Graham Potter’s side have scored after the 80th minute in five of their last nine games to snatch points, this time canceling out Patson Daka’s close-range goal from a minute into the second half. Host Leicester narrowly avoided another complete collapse. Days after conceding two stoppage-time goals to lose 3-2 to Tottenham, Leicester needed Youri Tielemans to clear off the line from Dan Burn and Schmeichel to save from Leandro Trossard to protect the draw. It dented Leicester’s lingering European hopes while a point will embolden the Seagulls, who remain four points above the 10th-place Foxes. ___ More AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Copyright © 2022 The Associated Press. LONDON (AP) — Liverpool reduced the gap at the top of the Premier League to nine points after a 3-1 win at Crystal Palace on Sunday. Virgil Van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored in the first half but Patrick Vieira’s side reduced the deficit through Odsonne Edouard’s goal after the break. It took a string of saves by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker to keep the lead for the visitors before Fabinho scored a penalty in the 89th minute to seal the win that took advantage of leader Manchester City drawing at Southampton on Saturday. This was Liverpool’s fifth game without Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane while they are at the African Cup of Nations. Andrew Robertson’s corner created the opener for Van Dijk’s header in the eighth minute. It was a poor goal for the hosts to give away and they could not handle Liverpool’s relentless pressing in the opening exchanges with Oxlade-Chamberlain firing off target twice in quick succession. But then Robertson spotted the late run of Oxlade-Chamberlain into the area and picked out his teammate with a...

At a time when Donald Trump’s status as 2024’s GOP frontrunner remains rock solid, I’m left wondering: Could Joe Biden’s weakness leave voters yearning for the return of a strongman? In a rational world, the thought would be absurd. Trump not only lost re-election, he continues to remind us of why the possibility of returning him to office should be a non-starter. But coupled with Biden’s floundering performance, Trump’s continued hold on the Republican Party makes it an eerily real possibility. Biden, the would-be anti Trump, has been guilty of aping some of Trump’s most divisive behavior. Still, Trump remains a uniquely dangerous political figure. He did, after all, attempt to overturn the 2020 elections and incited the Capitol riot. We are reminded of these facts on the regular. Take, for example, new revelations that the Trump campaign was actively involved in orchestrating efforts to present forged state election certificates, falsely claiming that pro-Trump electors were the legitimate electors. (And in case you think the slow drip of bad news will soon cease, the Supreme Court’s decision to allow Trump...
