A trans facilitator for the National Collegiate Athletic Association has resigned after the organization's Board of Governors changed its policy to pass the responsibility for transgender student athlete eligibility to individual sport governing bodies. Dorian Rhea Debussy, who is nonbinary/transfeminine and uses they/them pronouns, withdrew from their role as a volunteer facilitator with an NCAA inclusivity program called LGBTQ OneTeam on Monday. Debussy complained that the NCAA's decision, announced last week, to defer to each sport's governing body to determine whether transgender athletes will be permitted to compete as the gender they identify passes the buck and responsibility for supporting trans athletes.  'I'm deeply troubled by what appears to be a devolving level of active, effective, committed, and equitable support for gender diverse student-athletes within the NCAA's leadership,' Debussy wrote in a letter to NCAA president Mark Emmert. 'As a non-binary, trans-feminine person, I can no longer, in good conscience, maintain my affiliation with the NCAA,' Debussy continues in the letter, which was published publicly by the advocacy organization Athlete Ally. The NCAA's new policy contrasts the organization's previous, decade-long policy that...
Things will look differently on the first day of the second semester for students at Montgomery County, Maryland, high schools, following a shooting that left one student hurt and another in custody. The shooting last Friday at Magruder High School in Derwood sent the school into lockdown as law enforcement swarmed the campus. A 15-year-old student was shot and remains hospitalized with critical injuries; the teenager accused of the shooting faces charges of attempted second-degree murder and is being prosecuted as an adult. Beginning Tuesday, there will be a police presence in all high schools over the next week. “This gun incident involving students at Magruder High School has weighed on our sense of security, not only at Magruder High School, but in every single school within the school system,” Interim Superintendent Monifa McKnight said Monday at a news conference. “If there’s a police incident that occurs in the school, we deem it appropriate to have the police officers in that school,” McKnight said. In addition to law enforcement presence, the schedule at Magruder High School will also be adjusted...

"He said ‘It’s nothing personal, pal,'" Doocy said. "And we went back and forth, and we were talking about just kind of moving forward, and I made sure to tell him that I'm always gonna try to ask something different than what everybody else is asking. And he said, ‘You got to.’ And that's a quote from the president, so I'll keep doing it." A legal defense fund set up to help former aides of Donald Trump pay legal bills associated with the congressional inquiry into Jan. 6 is making perfectly clear who will and won't be eligible for assistance. "We are certainly not going to assist anyone who agrees with the mission of the committee and is aiding and abetting the committee," said Matt Schlapp, who chairs the American Conservative Union and oversees the First Amendment Fund. According to CNN, Trump has declined to dip into his own funds to help any former aides but is consulting with the defense fund on who to help and who to hang out to dry. "I am in communication with [Trump's] team about those decisions," Schlapp said, adding that the fund has the unilateral authority "to make decisions over whether someone gets assistance or doesn't." The fund currently amounts to over seven figures, according to Schlapp and, while it hasn't explicitly declined to help anyone yet, Schlapp said that time is surely coming. Schlapp said that "many" former aides have made use of the fund but...

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — Cyprus’ president has scrapped plans to grant free-of-charge, around-the-clock use of state-financed luxury vehicles to top civil servants amid a public outcry over a perceived waste of taxpayers’ money, a government spokesman said Monday. Government spokesman Marios Pelekanos said in a statement that President Nicos Anastasiades instructed the Finance Ministry to withdraw the decision after taking note of concerns that use of the vehicles would extend beyond the civil servants’ official duties, to activities like family excursions and shopping trips. The decision to grant vehicle use to officials including the permanent secretaries of government ministries was made following a deal with trade union officials to gradually re-instate the privilege that was cut amid fiscal belt-tightening following a 2013 financial crisis that nearly bankrupted the country. Pelekanos said the financial cost for such use would have been “limited” because the state wouldn’t have purchased the vehicles. The decision had angered Auditor General Odysseas Michaelides who had posted on his Twitter feed that he considered it “scandalous” for civil servants to use a “state limousine...

Peloton has been hit with another branding crisis after a major character in the Season 6 premiere of Showtime’s Billions was depicted having a heart attack after riding one of its bikes, about a month after a similar scene in And Just Like That.  The exercise equipment company is coming off the heels of a troublesome week that saw its stock dip 27% following reports of its plans for productions pauses.  To cap it all off, the brand faced a déjà vu moment after a scene in Sunday’s episode of ‘Billions’ that saw fictional character Mike Wagner, played by David Costabile, nearly suffering the same fate as Chris Noth’s Mr. Big in HBO’s “Sex and the City” sequel. Wagner is seen in the episode getting off the bike and refuting to other characters that he is having a heart attack, despite describing symptoms like shortness of breath and jaw discomfort.  He is rushed to an ambulance and soon recovers, however, only to make a grand entrance in the next scene and proclaim, ‘I’m not going out like Mr. Big.’ Mike...

The announcement Monday followed the restart of commercial flights from the city the day before. Xi’an has been a cornerstone of the ruling Communist Party’s “zero tolerance” strategy toward COVID-19 that mandates lockdowns, travel restrictions and mass testing whenever a case is discovered. Xi’an is about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) southwest of Beijing, where the Winter Olympics open Feb. 4. Access to the city was suspended Dec. 22 following an outbreak attributed to the delta variant of the coronavirus. UFC welterweight Michael Morales wrapped up an incredible UFC debut with a vicious first-round finish over Trevin Giles at UFC 270, but he’s still realistic with the things he feels he needs to work on. Morales entered UFC 270 as arguably one of the UFC’s most touted prospects, following an impressive showing on Dana White’s Contender Series. He earned a contract during the latest season and made his debut on the main card against a veteran in Giles. After some early struggles on the ground, Morales was able to get the fight back to the feet and overwhelm Giles with a barrage of strikes. After forcing Giles to the canvas, Morales landed some hard ground-and-pound to secure the victory. But during his UFC 270 post-fight press conference, Morales didn’t give himself a perfect score when asked to evaluate his performance. “I consider it to be an 8 [out of 10],” Morales said. “He hit me really well, but I was able to turn things around and...

Trader on the floor of the NYSE, Jan. 21, 2022.CNBC Stock futures are little changed in overnight trading Sunday, following the S&P 500's worst week since March 2020, as investors awaited more corporate earnings results and a key policy decision from the Federal Reserve. The value of the Miami Dolphins’ first-round pick from the San Francisco 49ers just keeps diminishing. With a second consecutive playoff upset victory pulled off by the 49ers, the pick they’re sending to the Dolphins will now be one of the final four selections of the upcoming NFL draft’s first round. San Francisco defeated the top-seeded Green Bay Packers, 13-10, in the NFC’s divisional round on Saturday night, and for the Dolphins, that means the best the pick can be is No. 29 as the 49ers advance to the NFC Championship Game against either the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or Los Angeles Rams. The remaining scenarios: 49ers lose and Cincinnati Bengals win in AFC Championship Game, the pick is 29; 49ers lose and Bengals lose, 30; 49ers lose in Super Bowl, 31; 49ers win in Super Bowl, 32. Had San Francisco lost on Saturday night at Lambeau Field, the pick would’ve been settled at No. 25. It’s the third consecutive week that the selection is negatively impacted. Had the Los Angeles Rams held on to a...

Outkick founder Clay Travis credited former New York Times writer Bari Weiss with a tide-turning moment in the now two-year-long coronavirus pandemic after declaring she's "done with COVID" and the lockdowns that have come with it. Progressive leaders have continued to enforce strict measures and vaccine mandates in the pandemic, most recently in response to the spread of the omicron variant. Weiss called it a "catastrophic moral crime" and a "pandemic of bureaucracy." "We were told you get the vaccine, you get the vaccine and you get back to normal," she said. "And we haven't gotten back to normal. And it's ridiculous at this point," Weiss said during an appearance on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher." "I know that so many of my liberal and progressive friends are with me on this and they do not want to say it out loud because they are scared to be called anti-vaxxed or to be called science denial or to be smeared as a Trumper," she continued. Bill Maher blasted the liberal media on Wednesday for "scaring the s---" out...
