Washington (CNN)Florida state lawmakers advanced a bill last week that would prohibit some schools from "encouraging" conversations about sexual orientation and gender identity in classrooms with young students. HB 1557, titled the Parental Rights in Education bill, was passed by the state House's GOP-controlled Education and Employment Committee on Thursday by a vote of 15-5. Though the bill's sponsor says the legislation aims to provide parents with greater oversight over what their students learn and discuss at school, opponents have said it will have a harmful impact on LGBTQ youth, whom they say are at an increased risk for suicide when they are not able to learn about LGBTQ-related topics while in school. The proposed legislation comes as policymakers around the country are engaged in spirited debates over parental rights and which social issues are taught in the classroom, with LGBTQ-related topics a major target for conservatives who say conversations around those subjects should be left for families to discuss at home. The legislation would make it illegal for districts to "adopt procedures or student support forms that prohibit school district personnel...

Today, social and sports media are abuzz with topics such as the three last-second field goals in the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs, the futures of Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady, Ryan Tannehill’s season-ending interception, the Packers’ woes on special teams, Andy Reid’s boneheaded play-calling, questions about whether Josh Allen is actually human, and Patrick Mahomes’ 13-second heroics. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s executive order allowing parents to choose whether students wear masks in school went into effect Monday. Loudoun County school rules say students must still wear masks, but that didn’t stop dozens of students at a high school in Purcellville from walking to class bare-faced. The students walked in to cheers and support from about a dozen parents outside Woodgrove High School. More Education News More Loudoun County News They chanted “No Mask Monday” as many maskless students waved at the on-looking parents. “We wanted our kids to have that choice,” one mother told WTOP. “And we fully support those that feel safest in a mask, also those that feel that the mask is impeding their learning or their health. So we’re just out here in support of their decision and their choice.” Most of the parents echoed that they were simply following the executive order from the governor. “We followed (former Gov.) They may be on opposite poles among House Republicans in their attitudes toward former President Donald Trump, but Rep. Liz Cheney got an unexpected compliment from firebrand freshman Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene on her conservative voting record. “Let me remind everyone, while Democrats are being fooled by Liz Cheney right now, they should remember that she is not a Democrat,” the Georgia Republican said Thursday on Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast about her House colleague from Wyoming. “As a matter of fact, she has a very conservative voting record. More conservative than some of my Republican colleagues, by the way.” Voting scorecards calculated by conservative organizations back up Greene’s assertion about Cheney, who was first elected to Wyoming's lone House seat in 2016. Heritage Action gives Cheney a lifetime score of 80%, while the American Conservative Union puts her lifetime score at 78%. FiveThirtyEight found Cheney voted in line with former President Donald Trump’s agenda 93% of the time. Greene made the comment while arguing Cheney, who she says she has “left the Republican Party,” is...

By Deena Shanker | Bloomberg Impossible Foods Inc., the closely held maker of vegan burgers, has terminated a handful of employees as part of an internal reorganization. “Earlier this month we made some organizational changes on several teams to ensure the functions supporting our business are best aligned with our strategy,” a company spokesperson told Bloomberg News via email. “This included downsizing some teams, and as a result a small number of employees were impacted.” Fewer than 15 of Impossible’s roughly 800 worldwide employees left, the spokesperson said. “We are continuing to actively hire, with plans to increase the size of our team throughout the year,” the spokesperson added. In a game that will be remembered for an epic quarterback duel between Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen, the best tackle of Sunday's AFC divisional playoff matchup in Kansas City was delivered by Buffalo's Stefon Diggs, who leveled an over-exuberant Chiefs fan as he ran across the field. CBS followed protocol by not showing the intruder on the network broadcast, but several spectators caught the action on their phones. The fan, identified by police as 20-year-old Jacob Bross, sprinted onto the field with two minutes remaining in regulation and the Bills trailing 26-21. Dressed in a Chiefs replica jersey, Bross appeared to be aiming for the ball, which was spotted near Kansas City's 20-yard line as Buffalo was driving for a late touchdown. But before Bross could get his hands on the pigskin, Diggs ran out from Buffalo's huddle, lowered his shoulder, and leveled him. 'Diggs took out some frustration on him,' CBS announcer and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo said after the hit. Arrowhead Stadium security, which had been in pursuit, was able to quickly collect Bross and...

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Joe Biden’s run for the Democratic presidential nomination was all but declared dead as he headed to the South Carolina primary in late February 2020. He had finished fifth in New Hampshire and fourth in Iowa. Still, Biden advised skeptics to withhold judgment until a state with a large pool of Black voters, the most reliable Democratic constituency, had a chance to weigh in. “Too often your loyalty, your commitment, your support for this party has been taken for granted,” he said. “I give you my word as a Biden that I never, ever, ever will.” Black voters delivered, recasting the Democratic contest and sending Biden on his way to the White House. Now, one year into his presidency, Biden is hoping he can maintain the support of Black voters, even as his failure to deliver on voting rights legislation and other issues has left some loyalists dispirited. Of the many challenges he confronts as he enters his second year, few are as important as retaining the strong backing from his party’s base. “I’m...

CARMEL (CBS SF) — Winds topping 65 mph roared through Northern California early Saturday fueling a wildfire racing through the hills in the Palo Colorado Canyon near Big Sur, forcing evacuations and a blaze near Geysers Peak in Sonoma County. Cal Fire said as of Saturday evening, the fire had burned 1,050 acres, down from the original estimate due to better mapping. They said containment had grown to 20%. “The fire lined up with the wind and the terrain and that gave the fire a lot of energy to make a big run,” said Cecile Juliette, a spokesperson for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The National Weather Service issued high wind warnings and advisories throughout Northern California. A warning for the North Bay mountains was extended to 4 p.m. Saturday. A recent Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) interim report said the majority of the mysterious cases known as Havana syndrome that has affected United States diplomats, spies, and other government officials are explained by undiagnosed medical conditions, stress, or environmental factors, rather than from a global attack by a foreign adversary like Russia. "We assess it is unlikely that a foreign actor, including Russia, is conducting a sustained, worldwide campaign harming U.S. personnel with a weapon or mechanism," a senior CIA official said. The CIA, however, is still investigating if a foreign government attack was responsible for a small number of individual cases that remain a mystery, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The bill needs support from every Democratic Senator as part of the budget reconciliation process.  However, President Joe Biden this week said Democrats will likely have to break up the legislation and try to pass parts of the bill, expressing optimism for climate policy and early childhood education.   "I'm confident we can get pieces, big chunks of the Build Back Better law signed into law," he said at a news conference on Wednesday. Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) on Friday admitted he has some regrets about how he handled a viral confrontation with a woman earlier this week at a fundraiser event. During an appearance at a Montgomery County Tea Party PAC meeting on Monday, the Republican lawmaker was grilled by a young woman over previous comments he made seemingly comparing Jesus Christ to a fictional character. “‘The most important thing here is that we have important hero archetypes that we look up to,’” the unidentified woman quoted from Crenshaw’s March 2020 appearance on the Jocko podcast. “‘Jesus is a hero archetype. Superman is a hero archetype. Real characters, too. I could name a thousand: Rosa Parks, Ronald Reagan,’ end quote,” the woman read off her phone, before telling Crenshaw: “I can’t wrap my head around this.” The congressman snapped in response: “Well, I’ll help you. Put a period after the word Jesus and don’t question my faith,” Crenshaw said, drawing audible boos from the crowd, with one attendee shouting that the woman was merely a 10-year-old child. If treated early enough, young children may be able to overcome their peanut allergies, according to researchers.  In a new study published Thursday in the journal The Lancet, a clinical trial funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that giving peanut oral immunotherapy to children ages 1 to 3 years old who are highly peanut-allergic induced remission of that allergy in one-fifth.  The authors gave toddlers daily increasing amounts of peanut protein powder to a group of toddlers for 2.5 years.  PEANUT ALLERGIES: WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE KIDS RETURN TO SCHOOL Nearly 150 children participated in the "IMPACT" trial at five academic medical centers. Only children who had an allergic reaction after eating half a gram of peanut protein or less were eligible to join the study. They were given doses of peanut powder mixed in food or a dummy powder — oat flour.  The children gradually ate escalating doses of up to 2 grams of peanut protein over a 30-week period. For an additional two years, the children then continued to consume their daily dose of peanut...
A MUM who named her son after her favourite character in medical drama Grey's Anatomy has divided opinion with the unique moniker. Emily Buterakos took to TikTok earlier this week to tease the name, sharing a video of herself cradling her son and writing alongside it: "We named our son after a Grey’s Anatomy character. 2Emily Buterakos took to TikTok to tease her son's Grey's Anatomy-inspired name "Can anyone guess his name? (Here’s a hint! It’s someone’s last name)." She then returned to the social media site for the "name reveal". And while the majority of people had guessed Avery or Sloan as the tot's name, Emily and her other half actually went for a less obvious choice. In a video alongside her son, she asked him: "What's your name?" "DeLuca!" he replied. She then asked if he likes his name, to which he answered "Yes", and asked him if he knew where his parents had got the idea for his name from. DENVER (CBS4) – Many grocery aisles in the Denver metro area are filled with empty shelves and disappointed customers. Some familiar with the industry say the supply shortage has been coming in waves, even before the King Soopers picket line formed while workers there were on strike this month. Many shoppers who avoided Kroger stores earlier this week were leaving competitors with unchecked items on their lists. Some shelves this week have been as empty as their fridges at home. (credit: CBS) “At Safeway and some Walmarts, their meats are really low and some of the dairy products. They’re not getting as much product as they used to get. They used to be stocked more than they are now. They only have very small varieties,” said Sherry as she left a Safeway store in Denver on Thursday. Instacart workers are feeling the shortages, too. Deborah enjoys delivering groceries through the Instacart app, but she wasn’t accepting orders from King Soopers during the strike. But King Soopers orders kept coming. “In Instacart, there will be one order for Sprouts and four...

I just can't tell you when.” Epps previously spoke to the committee “several weeks ago,” Thompson previously told the Washington Examiner. Epps’s lawyer John Blischak told Politico that the meeting was a precursor for Friday’s transcribed interview. A zoo located in Boise, Idaho, is vaccinating its animals against the coronavirus. Zoo Boise has already vaccinated nearly half of its animals in accordance with guidance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, according to the Associated Press. The zoo started providing animals with two-dose series of the vaccine last year, beginning with those at the highest risk for contracting COVID-19. Hoofed animals, primates and otters were among the first to be vaccinated, along with animals that had close contact with zoo-goers, the wire service noted. “For example, our farm animals. We have a feeding program with guests that visit the zoo so all of those animals were put into that first phase,” Boise Parks and Recreation Director Doug Holloway said, according to local news station KIVI-TV. According to Halloway, none of the animals at Zoo Boise have tested positive for the virus so far. “Our top priority is keeping our employees safe and so if that means we needed to vaccinate animals in order to be certain there is no exchange between them and our staff, that is...

Jasmine Jasudavicius will be stepping into the Octagon for the first time as an official UFC fighter on Saturday at UFC 270. Her opponent, Kay Hansen, has a lot of eyes on her, due to her sometimes controversial OnlyFans account … something Jasudavicius likes as it means she’ll have lots of eyes on her, as well. “My coach calls me ‘The OnlyFans Assassin’ because of it, but I like that she promotes herself and has garnered a lot of hype behind her; now I have an opportunity to steal some of those fans at UFC 270,” Jasudavicius told FanSided via email. “I think this matchup with Kay Hansen is great. Rep. Ruben Gallego. Arizona Rep. Ruben Gallego says he will decide next year whether to primary Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, who this week joined West Virginia’s Maserati-driving Joe Manchin and 50 Senate Republicans in preserving the Jim Crow filibuster over preserving our fundamental right to vote.  Gallego, a former Marine currently in his fourth term, said he’s even gotten calls from Sinema’s Senate colleagues, but wouldn’t name names. "To be honest, I have gotten a lot of encouragement from elected officials, from senators, from unions, from your traditional Democratic groups, big donors,” he told CNN. “Everything you can imagine under the sun." Sinema’s numbers among Democrats were already in the tank even before she helped block a vote on the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, named after the civil rights icon she once dared call her “hero” and “dear friend.” Since then, she’s also lost the support of major progressive organizations EMILY's List and NARAL. "We will no longer be able to endorse Sen. Sinema moving forward,” wrote EMILY's List President Laphonza Butler. “In an interview Thursday, Gallego said the last few weeks have amounted to a ‘tipping point situation’ among many in his party since...
