A Hawthorne woman was asleep alone at her parents' home when she heard her dog bark and awoke to the smell of smoke. Finding the backyard on fire, Jazmin Mendoza-Ortega grabbed Stella, ran out the door and dialed 911. Firefighters got there quickly, but fire, smoke and water damage pulverized the home where her hard-working parents, Washington Mendoza and Betty Ortega, had lived for 17 years. Several chickens died and some pet birds were rescued -- along with Stella -- from the house at Lafayette and Llewellyn avenues on Monday.  Gone is the hub around which family members' lives revolved. "My family tried to get together and salvage what we could, but so much had already been damaged," Mendoza-Ortega said. They "have seen all they have worked for since coming to this country go up in ashes." That's why she's launched a fundraising campaign: Mendoza Family Fire (GoFundMe) Betty Ortega emigrated from Ecuador in her late 20s and has "worked every day since," Mendoza-Ortega said. "She has worked in many places and recently studied to become a CNA," she said....

The 12-year-old has been battling COVID for eight weeks now, with her father fighting right there along with her. Both of them were admitted into the ICU in November after catching the virus before they could get vaccinated. The father and daughter are now both out of the hospital and thankful beyond words to finally be going home, to be together again, as a family. “There’s no words you to describe to be honest with you. It was a nightmare, you know. I didn’t know my daughter was hospitalized at the same time I was. I wasn’t aware of that until I came out of the ICU,” said Mike DeCelle. “It definitely did damage but I’m definitely excited to go back home,” Mikayla said. “I don’t want to start crying,” her father said, “but I’m extremely grateful and I’ll be indebted to people for the emotional support.” Both have been since received their first doses of the vaccine...

JERUSALEM (AP) — Palestinian residents of a flashpoint east Jerusalem neighborhood held a tense standoff with Israeli authorities on Monday as police came to evict them from a disputed property. Several residents of a home in Sheikh Jarrah climbed onto the roof of the building with gas tanks and threatened to set them alight should the Jerusalem municipality follow through with the eviction. Residents say they purchased the property before 1967, when Israel captured east Jerusalem, while the state has argued in court that the family does not have rights to the property. The Jerusalem Municipality formally seized the property in 2017 for the purpose of building a special needs school. A Jerusalem court ruled last year in favor of the city and authorized the eviction. The family has appealed and is awaiting a ruling, but the judge did not freeze the eviction order. City Hall and the police issued a joint statement saying the court ordered the family to vacate the property a year ago. The municipality said the property is to be used to build...
DEAR MISS MANNERS: One’s bank account, knowledge of formal social rules and ability to follow table etiquette are not necessarily synonymous with true graciousness, consideration and courtesy. In fact, they may be covering up one’s insincerity and disdain for others. I find it unfair that the well-dressed and seemingly more refined are often credited with being more “appropriate” in society than those who are unpretentious and casual. The backstory is that when my sister and I were children, one aunt would take us into the city for dinner and a play, introducing us to the more refined things in life. It was very enjoyable at the time. We considered invaluable her lessons on how to present oneself in a dignified manner and follow respectable social mores. She was quick to point out social gaffes and inappropriate dress and demeanor, thus teaching us how to perform in social situations.
