President Joe Biden will hold a rare solo press conference on Wednesday evening, the day before his one-year annivesary in office, where he is expected to defend his tenure in the White House and preview his plans for the next three years.  He will also likely face questions on the issues of the day - voting rights, his Build Back Better bill, his declining approval rating, Russia and the Ukraine, inflation and the Omicron variant of COVID.  His last solo press conference in the White House was in March and his last formal press conference was in October, when he was in Glasgow, Scotland for COP26. He has held solo press conferences on foreign trips and joint ones with world leaders in addition to taking questions from reporters on the fly. In total, Biden has held six news conferences on his own and three jointly with foreign leaders - a number far below that of his predecessors in the Oval Office.  White House press secretary Jen Psaki started the defense of Biden's first year in her press briefing Tuesday when she...
One year into his term, more than a third of the country believes President Joe Biden is flunking out, a new survey finds. According to a Politico/Morning Consult poll out Wednesday, 37 percent of respondents give the president an “F” for the first quarter of his presidency. By contrast, a meager 11 percent give Biden an “A” thus far, while 20 percent give him a “B.” Nearly a third of the country put Biden in the “C” or “D” category — with 18 percent giving the president a “C” and 12 percent giving him a “D.” At this point in his term, Biden’s failing grade exceeds even former President Donald Trump’s. The 45th president got an “F” from 35 percent of Americans, compared to Biden’s 37 percent. Biden got his worst marks on the economy, immigration, and “restoring unity” — with 40 percent flunking him in the latter two categories, and 38 percent giving him an “F” on the economy. His best grades came on Covid-19 and health care, where 35 percent and 31 percent respectively gave him an...

The outgoing Finance Minister and new German Chancellor Minister Olaf Scholz delivers a speech during the handing-over ceremony with his successor in the German Federal Ministry of Finances in Berlin, Germany, December 9, 2021.Tobias Schwarz | Reuters Borrowing costs for the German government continued their push higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark 10-year bund yield trading in positive territory for the first time in nearly three years. May 2019 was the last time that German 10-year yields were above zero, when accommodative policy from the European Central Bank pressured interest rates lower. Negative yields meant that investors were effectively paying the German government to lend it money. The ECB is currently behind on its normalization path, compared to the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England, but surging inflation and wider moves in the global bond market have now helped to push yields above zero. Euro zone inflation hit a new record high in December, raising more questions about the ECB's monetary policy. The central bank said last month that it would be cutting its monthly asset purchases, but vowed to...
(CNN)As he walked through the front gate of the White House complex last year for the first time as President, Joe Biden declared it felt like "going home." If the presidency seemed then like a natural fit for a 50-year creature of Washington, today its limits are leading to a reckoning over expectations and ambitions in a country as exhausted, angry and divided as ever.Biden enters the second year of his term with one of the lowest approval ratings of a modern-day president, depleted of the political capital and sense of confidence that followed him into office. A sense of normalcy returned to the White House following the whiplash of Donald Trump's presidency, but a string of setbacks -- at home and abroad -- have eroded the air of competence that once surrounded a President and his team, who have spent most of their lives in government and campaigned for the job on a pledge of restoring order. On most days since January 20, 2021, the President has arrived at the Oval Office early in the morning, peppered his team with...
The Supreme Court late last week agreed to hear oral arguments in a religious liberty case regarding a high school football coach who was fired for praying on the field after games. The case has taken several years — since 2015 — to be accepted by the highest court in the United States, and will require the justices to look at three parts of the First Amendment and how they pertain to public employees. The case surrounds high school football coach Joseph Kennedy and Bremerton School District in the state of Washington. Kennedy, a devout Christian who began working at Bremerton High School in 2008, was fired from his role as varsity assistant coach and as the junior varsity head coach after he refused to quit praying on the 50 yard line in full view of the public following games. Kennedy asserted that the school district violated the Free Speech and Free Exercise Clauses of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The district also used the First Amendment to justify its argument, claiming that Kennedy’s prayers in view of the...
Workers install roofing on an apartment complex under construction in Lehi, Utah, on Friday, Jan. 7, 2022.George Frey | Bloomberg | Getty Images Builders in the single-family housing market are facing growing expenses, which is causing a turnaround in sentiment to start the year. Builder confidence fell one point to 83 in January, according to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI). Anything above 50 is considered positive, but that is the first drop in four months. The index also stood at 83 in January 2021. "Higher material costs and lack of availability are adding weeks to typical single-family construction times," said NAHB Chairman Chuck Fowke, a homebuilder from Tampa, Florida. "NAHB analysis indicates the aggregate cost of residential construction materials has increased almost 19% since December 2021." The price of softwood lumber alone has jumped about 85% in just the last three months, according to Random Lengths. Lumber prices spike last spring and then came down dramatically over the summer. They are up again now, after the U.S. doubled tariffs on Canadian lumber and...

WE all know how to empty the hoover, but did you know you should also regularly clean its hose pipe? In the arid desert of Western Australia, near Perth, astronomers are on the hunt for evidence of the universe's first-ever stars. To do this, they are seeking out the signal of the neutral hydrogen that pervaded the early universe some 13 billion years ago, before the so-called 'cosmic dawn'.  Physicists expect this signal to decrease and eventually disappear as the first stars, galaxies and quasars formed and gradually ionised the hydrogen around them. However, picking up this signal is like trying to zero in on a whispered conversation across a crowded, noisy room, meaning there is a lot of interference to isolate first. Researchers from Perth's Curtin University have now managed to reduce the noise from the most intense of these 'foreground' signals by a factor of three in models. This is a big step in the hunt for the earliest stars — the detection of which would shine light on this key period when the cosmos evolved its large-scale structures. The first full moon of 2022, known as the wolf moon, will rise about 24 minutes before the sun sets on the US’ East Coast tonight. The name for the January moon stems from how packs of wolves were heard howling outside of outside the villages amid the cold and deep snows of winter. The wolf moon will rise at 4:31pm EST and peak at 6:48pm EST - and it will be visible until Wednesday. NASA engineers have fixed a glitch in the 'brain' of the SLS megarocket, that will eventually take the first woman and next man to land on the surface of the moon. The $20 billion Space Launch System (SLS) has been in development since 2011, and has been hit by multiple delays and problems over the past decade. Its first launch recently slipped from the end of last year to no earlier than March this year due to a problem with the onboard engine controller, which acts as the brain for each of the powerful RS-25 engines that propel the rocket into orbit. The US space agency has now replaced the components and all four engine controllers have performed well in tests, paving the way for its maiden launch. The Marine Corps granted two religious exemption requests for the coronavirus vaccine, the service announced Thursday, marking the first time any such accommodation was affirmed despite thousands of requests. Religious exemptions are hard to come by in the military. This is the first the Marines have granted in at least a decade, according to the Military Times. The lack of such accommodations as it relates to the coronavirus has also become a source of political division, a microcosm of the perpetual debate regarding whether mandating the vaccine comports with people's First Amendment rights. Even though each service branch has reached the mid-90th percentile in vaccination rate among active-duty troops, the select few who have refused, a count that is approximately in the tens of thousands, are finding allies on the political right. Trump supporters showed up in droves in rural Arizona Saturday  witness the former president give his first rally of the new year to kick off the mid-term season, where he was joined by several GOP candidates in the state he lost to Joe Biden by less than half a point.   The Saturday night rally kicked off with a full embrace of the so-called 'big lie.' 'Who won the election?' Arizona's GOP Chairwoman Kelli Ward asked the crowd. She received a chorus of 'Trump!' in return. At other times the crowd was urged to chant 'de-certify!' My Pillow CEO Mike Lindell, one of the president's most ardent defenders of his claims of election fraud, aimed his ire Saturday at conservative media outlets who won't fully embrace those false claims. 'This brings up the biggest problem we face. It's not the media, the fake news media, we're all onto them. It's the conservative media,' Lindell said. 'The ones that don't talk. One of them rhymes with Fox,' he joked. 'They're disgusting. They're disgusting. They won't talk about anything,' he continued. 'When was...

Donald Trump is heading to rural Arizona for his first rally of the new year t kick off the mid-term season, where he will be joined by several GOP candidates in the state he lost to Joe Biden by less than half a point.  Accompanying the president will be three Republican lawmakers  Reps. President Joe Biden will give a formal press conference next week, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Friday – as the president starts the year with low poll numbers and faces defeat of two key agenda items.  Wednesday will mark 78 days since his last formal press conference  – a period that has seen Biden's approval rating slide, amid the spread of the omicron variant, the failure to pass his Build Back Better plan, and his so far unsuccessful effort to move voting rights legislation. As of Friday, Biden had gone 73 days without such an event. Biden will face the press on Jan. 19, the anniversary of former President Donald Trump's last full day in office.  White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, who has been fending off questions from reporters for weeks about when Biden would hold such an event, mentioned it at the top of her briefing Friday. President Joe Biden is scheduled to hold a formal press conference Wednesday. He has taken questions at less formal events, as he did at the Capitol Thursday, often fielding...
ASTRONOMERS witnessed the 'violent death' of a red supergiant star for the first time, a new study says. Scientists also observed the star's final days before its massive explosion turned it into a supernova, according to the findings, which were published in the Astrophysical Journal on January 6. 2This original artwork depicts a red supergiant star as it's about to explodeCredit: W.M. Keck Observatory/Adam Makarenko The star was first discovered by researchers from Northwestern University and the University of California, Berkeley, in summer 2020. The team used the University of Hawaii’s Pan-STARRS telescope which is perched atop Haleakalā Observatory in Maui to observe the star, which data concluded was ten times more massive than our Sun. However, much to their surprise, researchers discovered a few months later that the automated telescope had actually captured the star's death. The observations also revealed a lot of dense circumstellar material floating around the star during the explosion. "The death of a massive star like this, it's very dramatic and very violent. We've never really seen anything like this," Wynn Jacobson-Galán, an astrophysicist at UC Berkeley and lead author...
THE UK's daily Covid cases have fallen below 100,000 for the first time in three weeks. Infections have dipped to 99,652 today, in a promising sign the country is moving past the Omicron peak. 1The UK is back below 100,000 daily cases for the first time in weeksCredit: LNP The last time figures were below 100,000 was Christmas Day, but this was likely due to people not being tested. But December 19 saw 81,761 new cases in 24 hours, before it began to steadily increase over the next two weeks. For the past seven days, infections have fallen hugely from record highs of over 200,000-per-day in an encouraging sign. It follows the release of Sage documents today, which revealed fresh data showed Omicron is 65 per cent less likely to cause death compared to Delta. Patients in hospital with the variant have also been found to have shorter stays, and are less likely to need oxygen or intensive care. By Todd Woody | Bloomberg Endangered Coho salmon are returning to Marin County, California, creeks this winter where they’ve long been absent, thanks to intense rains that scientists say will become more frequent as the state swings between climate-driven drought and deluge. It’s a rare bit of good news for a species whose population has plummeted in recent decades due to development and pollution. In the San Francisco Bay Area, thousands of salmon historically made the annual migration from the Pacific Ocean to the redwood-shrouded creeks in Marin County where they were born. There they would spawn the next generation of fish before dying. In recent years that population has dwindled to just a few hundred salmon and the future looked dire as California’s record-breaking drought dried out streams. But an atmospheric river that inundated the Bay Area in October followed by heavy rains in December filled creeks in the largely rural county, allowing salmon to navigate culverts and other obstacles to reach creeks that had previously been impassable. First-time sightings of Chinook salmon in creeks have also been reported. “Salmon have...
The cover of British Vogue's February issue featuring nine black models has been branded 'offensive' on social media as critics claim bad lighting and poor styling hid the women's features and made their skin look darker. Starring models Adut Akech, Amar Akway, Majesty Amare, Akon Changkou, Maty Fall, Janet Jumbo, Abény Nhial, Nyagua Ruea and Anok Yai, the cover was shot by Brazilian photographer Rafael Pavarotti and styled by British Vogue's Editor-In-Chief Edward Enninful OBE. It marks the first time Vogue has featured a group of black women this size on the cover, for an issue celebrating the rise of African models who are 'redrawing the map'. However, the imagery has been met with furious backlash online, with dozens of fans saying the 'badly lit' image appeared to darken the models, who have a range of skin tones, to a point where they were unrecognisable and look like 'mannequins'.  A behind-the-scenes video of the shoot featuring the models having their hair and make-up done shows the diversity of their skin tones, sugesting that it was the ligthing rather than cosmetics that...
Astronomers have captured the death of a red supergiant star for the first time.  The real-time discovery was published Jan. 6 in Astrophysical Journal and led by researchers at Northwestern University and the University of California, Berkeley.  JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE IS FULLY DEPLOYED According to a press release from Northwestern, the team observed the red supergiant during the last 130 days before it collapsed into a Type II supernova.  Previous observations showed that red supergiants were relatively inactive before their deaths, without any evidence of violent eruptions or luminous emissions.  These researchers, however, detected bright radiation from a red supergiant in the final year before exploding.  "This is a breakthrough in our understanding of what massive stars do moments before they die," Wynn Jacobson-Galán, the study’s lead author, said in a statement. "Direct detection of pre-supernova activity in a red supergiant star has never been observed before in an ordinary type II supernova. For the first time, we watched a red supergiant star explode." The work – which was conducted at Northwestern before Jacobson-Galán moved to UC Berkeley – suggests...

Donald Trump's former campaign manager has said he was pressured to lie about the then-president by special counsel Robert Mueller's investigative team. Paul Manafort, 72, spoke on Wednesday night to Fox News' Sean Hannity for the first time since being pardoned by Trump more than a year ago. Manafort was charged in 2017 with conspiracy against the United States, making false statements, money laundering and failing to register as a foreign agent for Ukraine. Manafort - a globetrotting lobbyist famed for representing dubious characters such as Congolese President Mobutu Sese Seko, Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines, and Nigerian coup leader Sani Abacha - was the figurehead for accusations that Russian President Vladimir Putin helped elect Trump.  Manafort was accused of working with Russia to help Trump win the election - something which was never proved, and he has always denied. The problem for Carr was that in the fourth quarter of that fateful 15th game, a win over the Indianapolis Colts, he fractured his right fibula. And, not surprisingly, the Raiders lost to Houston in the Wild Card Round. The team that had waited since 2002 to get in the playoffs exited immediately, mostly because the starting quarterback was a spectator rather than a participant. Well, welcome back to the playoffs, Raider Nation. The Academy Awards will have a host in 2022 for the first time in three years, but there’s still no word on who it will be. In 2019, a controversy surrounding Kevin Hart led to the decision by ABC to move forward with the award show without a host for the first time in recent memory. Audiences seemingly responded positively to the change given the ratings that the Oscars got that year, so the network decided to keep with that format, until now.  Speaking at the Television Critics Association virtual press tour, Hulu Originals & ABC Entertainment President Craig Erwich revealed that the network is currently on the hunt for a pop culture savvy host to helm the show for the first time since Jimmy Kimmel did the job for the 2017 and 2018 seasons.  BILLY CRYSTAL SAYS THE OSCARS NEEDS A HOST AFTER 2021 AWARDS HIT RECORD-LOW RATINGS The Oscars will have a host  for the first time in three years. (CNN)In 2021, Honda was outsold in the United States by the combined forces of two South Korean brands, Hyundai and Kia. Taken together, the two Seoul-based brands ranked fifth in US sales, delivering 1,439,497 cars, trucks and minivans. Japan-based Honda sold 1,309,222. Looking at just these mainstream brands, Hyundai and Kia outsold Honda by more than 130,000 vehicled, the first time the combined brands have outsold Honda. If their respective luxury brands are included -- Hyundai's Genesis and Honda's Acura -- the margin is much narrower, just 22,000 sales, but the Korean brands still come out slightly ahead. These sales figures were supplied by the automakers. For Kia, it was the first time the brand ever sold more than 700,000 vehicles in one year. Hyundai set a record for retail sales -- meaning excluding sales to fleet customers -- and increased its market share by eight-tenths of a percentage point. It might seem odd to compare two automakers with just one, but Hyundai and Kia are closely related. Hyundai Motor Group, Hyundai's parent company, owns a controlling interest in Kia, and...

Officials dished out an unusual penalty during the first quarter of Monday’s national title game between Georgia and Alabama. Trailing 3-0, Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett took a snap and handed the ball off before officials whistled the play dead on a penalty. Rather than be a common pre-snap penalty on the offense such as a false start or a delay of game, it was the defense that was penalized for… clapping. Well, technically the flag was for a delay of game. Here’s how the referee explained it: Prior to the ball being snapped, delay of game: disconcerting signals, defense, number 10 – clapping. Five-yard penalty. Second down. The clapping culprit was Crimson Tide linebacker Henry To’o To’o, who may have been attempting to mimic the snap count in an attempt to induce Georgia to commit a false start. “It’s amazing the referee – with this crowd noise – can hear that,” said analyst Kirk Herbstreit. “But you could see him clapping to your right.” This isn’t the first time a defense got flagged for the penalty this college football season....

SEEING the British public respond and come forward in their millions for their Covid-19 vaccines and boosters has filled me with hope. I wish this pandemic was over now, but I am a realist. Things are better than back in 2020 — far better — the end is in sight, but we are not quite there yet. 3Vaccines are safe, they work and they are the way out of the pandemic and back to normalityCredit: AFP 3The end is in sight, but we are not quite there yet, writes Prof Van-Tam Omicron is a really frustrating and unwelcome turn in this pandemic. It is by far the most infectious variant to emerge and has resulted in record numbers of cases in the UK — they really are extraordinarily high. It is still a bit touch and go on hospital admissions and will be for a few more weeks — but there’s no doubt we are in a much stronger place than in 2020 and early 2021 as we have an excellent vaccine programme. The chances of hospitalisation have reduced slightly...
