White House chief of staff Ron Klain has come under fire as Joe Biden's popularity wanes and Democrats struggle to pass the president's huge social safety net legislation.  The litany of complaints against Klain, a longtime Democratic insider, goes as follows: he 'micromanages' the West Wing, he's too deferential to the liberal wing of the party, and he pays way too much attention to cable news and social media. Two reports on Klain, 60, this week - timed to the one-year anniversary of Biden's tenure in office - were filled with complaints about his work. Most are from  anonymous sources, likely because they are about someone in the powerful White House chief of staff position.  Several Democratic lawmakers have said they've gotten unexpected phone calls from Biden praising them for on-air appearances supporting him and his agenda. Moderate Democrats complain that Klain gives too much deference to their liberal colleagues with some saying he needs to be replaced, Politico reported. 'The president was elected because we all thought he was going to be good at governing,' said a House Democratic lawmaker...

The FBI has been alerted to a possible contact of the Texas synagogue terrorist, as a new photo emerges of the attacker taken just days before the hostage crisis.  Malik Faisal Akram, 44, had stayed at Dallas-area homeless shelters for about two weeks before taking four people and a rabbi hostage in a 10-hour siege on Saturday, ending in his death in a police shooting. Wayne Walker, CEO and pastor of OurCalling, which provides services to homeless people, said that Akram stayed at their downtown Dallas facility on January 2, and their review of camera footage showed he was dropped off by someone who hugged him. 'So he was dropped off by somebody that looked like he had a relationship with him,' said Walker.  'He was dropped off by a guy who actually had some conversations with him outside and actually brought him in to our facility, had some more conversations with him inside,' Walker said.  'And then before he left, they gave each other long hugs like they were long lost friends and patted each other on the back...

Authorities recently identified a woman whose body was discovered in D.C. last year, noting she could be connected to the alleged “shopping cart killer,” named Anthony Robinson. Officials identified her as Sonya Champ, who was found in the 200 block of F Street NE in early September in a shopping cart by a passerby, WJLA reported Saturday. “That person called 911 and the first responders pronounced Champ dead at 12:15 p.m,” the outlet said. Meanwhile, Virginia’s Fairfax County Police Department confirmed it recently learned of the woman’s death. The identification happened a day after Fairfax County Police announced Friday two additional women, who were also the shopping cart killer’s possible victims, had been identified. During a press conference Friday, Fairfax Police Chief Kevin Davis confirmed the remains of the two women located in Alexandria were identified as Cheyenne Brown, 29, of D.C., and Stephanie Harrison, 48, of Redding, California. Officials in Kazakhstan have denied that a controversial 'military biological laboratory' was seized in the recent unrest, which has so far claimed 160 lives since starting on January 2. It is not clear if the 164 deaths refer only to civilians or if law enforcement deaths are included, but the number - provided by the health ministry to state news channel Khabar-24 - are a significant rise from previous tallies.  Kazakh authorities said earlier on Sunday that 16 police or national guard members had been killed. Russian media highlighted claims that the US-funded facility near Almaty was compromised, resulting in a possible leak of dangerous pathogens.   The airport, mayor's office and secret services buildings fell briefly into the hands of rioters during a wave of protests backed by shadowy armed cells. BOSTON (CBS) — Friday’s snowfall was as close to a perfect storm as we get around here – a solid 6-12″ for most with none of the destructive qualities some winter storms can bring. No coastal flooding. No power outages. No damaging wind. Just snow. On the heels of that system, another wave of low pressure is set to bring more wintry weather to the area. This time, freezing rain is the threat. (WBZ-TV Graphic) A Winter Weather Advisory is out ahead of the expected wintry mix arriving Sunday morning. The areas of concern are mainly west of I-495 like northwest Middlesex and Worcester County. Monday will start with temperatures well below the freezing mark, so as early as 7-8 a.m., freezing rain is possible through the late morning and afternoon. (WBZ-TV Graphic) Eastern Mass. will moderate enough that freezing rain isn’t a problem, however any plain cold rain that falls likely freezes into black ice Sunday night. Getty The Seahawks could lure Antonio Brown for Russell Wilson. The Seattle Seahawks could emerge as a potential landing spot for one of the most accomplished receivers in NFL history. As unlikely as it seems right now, Antonio Brown could return to the NFL. While the scenario seems dim due to Brown’s recent scene with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, we’re still awaiting official explanation from Brown’s camp. If the explanation seems believable and works in Brown’s favor, that could possibly open the doors for another stint with an NFL team. According to CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson, the veteran receiver can have another job in the league if he wants one. “If Antonio Brown wants a job on another team in the NFL, he can have one,” says Anderson. “That is not an opinion. That is what I know.” Based upon that knowledge and the fact that Russell Wilson has vouched for Brown in the past, CBS Sports’ Jeff Kerr believes the Seattle Seahawks could be a possible landing spot for the 33-year-old receiver. “The Seahawks were another team...

Finland has said it could join NATO in defiance of Russia's warning that the alliance should not be allowed to expand any further to the east. Sauli Niinisto, president of the Nordic country, made the remark during a New Year address on Saturday which seemed designed to antagonise Vladimir Putin. Putin had previously demanded cast iron guarantees that Ukraine never be allowed to join NATO, saying the alliance's eastwards expansion is a threat to his border.  That prompted Niinisto's remark, which appears designed as a warning to Russia not to threaten neighbouring states. A quick-moving storm system coupled with the arrival of sharply colder temperatures could bring a round of snowfall to much of the region. The timeframe for potential snowfall is overnight through around noon on Monday, Jan. 3. "It may be hard to believe that any snow is on the way, given the warmth and lack of wintry weather thus far this season," AccuWeather Meteorologist Ryan Adamson said. It will become sharply colder as the day progresses on Sunday, Jan. 2, from a high temperature of around 50 degrees falling into the mid 20s after nightfall. Strong winds with sustained speeds of 10 to 15 miles per hour and gusts as high as around 25 mph will make it feel even colder.  After the storm pushes through, skies will become partly sunny Monday. The high temperature will struggle to pass the 30-degree mark and wind-chill values between 15 and 20 degrees. Tuesday, Jan. 4 will be sunny with a high in the low to mid 30s. BOSTON (CBS) — Two women and one man were shot during the middle of the day near a Dorchester home on Monday. It happened on Schuyler Street before 2:30 p.m. The man died from his injuries, according to Boston Police Deputy Superintendent James Miller. The two women were taken to local hospitals. There was a large police presence in the area after the shooting because police said there was initially a report of barricaded suspect. “It is just really sad. A possible hung jury looms over the Kim Potter trial as deliberations reached an impasse upon entering its 13th hour on Tuesday evening. After closing arguments on Monday, the jury deliberated the verdict for five hours on whether or not to convict former officer Kim Potter of manslaughter for the shooting of Daunte Wright earlier this year. On Tuesday, after deliberating for another eight hours, the jury asked reportedly asked Judge Regina Chu “what they should do if they cannot agree on a verdict,” according to Fox News. “If a jury cannot reach consensus, what is the guidance around how long and what steps should be taken?” read the jury’s question that the judge shared with the court. Judge Chu then re-read instructions that were given to the jury before deliberations began on Monday. “You should decide the case for yourself but only after you should have discussed the case with your fellow jurors and have carefully considered their views,” the judge told the jury. “You should not hesitate to re-examine your views and change your opinion if you become convinced...
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- With the threat of omicron intensifying, many are wondering how to handle holiday gatherings this week.Dr. Cameron Nouri with Dignity Health Community Hospital says even if you are vaccinated, gathering around the Christmas tree with family this holiday must come with extra care, especially indoors. He said the best defense against COVID-19 are vaccinations and booster shots.Nouri says you should still use physical distancing measures and wear masks.Nouri adds that the COVID-19 vaccine is not a shield that will completely protect from either getting or transmitting the disease."That's not what it's meant for. It does reduce your risk of catching it or transmitting it significantly, but we see that less and less with these new variants," Nouri said. "...You can still catch the virus, you can still become ill, most cases are very mild."Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti wants residents to have a safe COVID-free holiday. The mayor said it's important to "remember the things that keep us safe and secure: our vaccinations and boosters, our physical distancing and our testing."Nouri wants to remind you if you...

Getty Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield. This offseason could feature an unprecedented amount of quarterback movement around the NFL. Big names like Russell Wilson, Aaron Rodgers and Deshaun Watson could be on the move. Though Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr isn’t on the same level as those three, he figures to garner a lot of interest on the trade market should he become available. A good team that needs an upgrade at quarterback would love to have a player like Carr. An interesting team to keep an eye on is the Cleveland Browns. Former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield has been disappointing this season and it appears they don’t believe he’s their franchise quarterback going forward. Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com thinks that Carr could be of interest to the Browns this offseason: If the Browns decide they need to look elsewhere, perhaps they’d consider Derek Carr, who would fit well in this scheme. They might also keep an eye on what happens with Deshaun Watson’s legal situation, and then there are other veteran quarterbacks such...
Getty Images Marcus Mariota and Derek Carr of the Las Vegas Raiders. The Cleveland Browns will face the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday, which will give the team a closer look at quarterback Derek Carr, who was recently pitched as a possible replacement for Baker Mayfield. The proposal comes via Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com, who responded to a question about realistic Mayfield replacements for next season if the Browns don’t think the former top pick is “their guy.” Cabot wrote: If the Browns decide they need to look elsewhere, perhaps they’d consider Derek Carr, who would fit well in this scheme. They might also keep an eye on what happens with Deshaun Watson’s legal situation, and then there are other veteran quarterbacks such as Russell Wilson who could become available. Cabot does note that she believes that the Browns and Mayfield will agree to an extension, although that is contingent on how the rest of the season goes. Mayfield has been banged up this year, making it hard for the team to evaluate his progression in head...

What cannot be denied is his pulling power, selling 1.5m PPVs in his last fight, a first-round knockout against ex-UFC welterweight Ben Askren. Paul is confident the path he is currently on leaves him in a position to sensationally retire as the wealthiest fighter ever. ...
