(AP) — A 37-mile ice highway in Minnesota that takes motorists across the mammoth Lake of the Woods to the northernmost point in the contiguous United States is open for the second straight year. The toll is $250 per vehicle. The road costs an estimated $1,500 per mile for plowing and other upkeep. It begins in Warroad and ends at the Northwest Angle resort community, which is known for its ice fishing. The highway allows people to bypass a drive into Canada or get there in a vehicle rather than a plane or snowmobile. With the supply shortages hitting the car industry and skyrocketing transaction prices, it seems like people will buy anything they can get their hands on these days. But there are a few models they'd rather not buy again. The latest survey from Consumer Reports reveals the 10 least-satisfying vehicles currently on sale. Owners were asked under no specific criteria if they'd make the same purchase if given the choice today, and few cars really came up short. The Toyota C-HR starts at $25,095. (Toyota) Topping the dubious list was the Toyota C-HR, which just 29% of owners said they'd make a repeat purchase on. The $21,640 Ford EcoSport is the only car on sale in the U.S. that's imported from India. (Ford) It was followed closely by the Ford EcoSport (30%) and Chevrolet Trax (37%), which are both direct competitors in the subcompact SUV segment. A vehicle fire and a rollover crash led to road closures on Route 17 in the Hudson Valley. New York State Police reported on the afternoon of Wednesday, Jan. 12, that drivers should avoid Route 17 in Orange County near Exit 120 in the Town of Wallkill. The eastbound lanes were closed due to a vehicle fire, and the westbound lanes were closed due to a rollover crash, police said.  As of about 2 p.m. on Wednesday, State Police said traffic was being diverted at Exit 119.
2021 was an unusual year for the automotive industry. While customer demand for new cars rebounded from the economic uncertainty of 2020, automakers found themselves unable to meet that demand because of semiconductor chip shortages and supply chain problems. So what should car shoppers expect for 2022? Much of the same, unfortunately. “Competition for new vehicles will be fierce as inventory shortages persist in 2022,” said Ivan Drury, Edmunds’ senior manager of insights for Edmunds. Shoppers today must contend with a limited selection, dealership markups, little to no discounts, and a greater sense of urgency to move quickly on a deal. With this in mind, here are five ways that car buying has changed, along with a few tips on how to manage it. ONGOING VEHICLE SHORTAGE MEANS HIGHER PRICES Vehicles that make their way onto the lot are more likely to be in more expensive trims and either marked up in price or with numerous dealer-installed accessories that achieve the same effect. And if that wasn’t enough to contend with, you’ll find that dealerships are much less likely...
MOTOR vehicle giant GM has revealed that they are designing a fleet of lunar rovers for astronauts to drive on the moon. Of course, when designing a fleet of buggies for space (each one with a different purpose), there are many questions to consider. The Clark County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 65-year-old Richard P. Miller from Las Vegas. His death was ruled a homicide due to multiple gunshot wounds. According to KVVU, Miller and Holland were acquaintances. Holland's attorney, P. David Westbrook, said that his client — a simple hapless car thief — merely happened to steal the wrong vehicle. "The body recovered in this case was in the second truck (the Chevy) not the first (the Toyota)," Westbrook said. "Additionally, the truck bed was covered and the body was stored in sealed coolers." "In order to presume that Mr. Holland had prior knowledge of the contents of this truck, you would also have to believe that he led police to the body intentionally," Westbrook added. "The question is: Why would he do this?" In one of the weirdest scientific experiments yet, goldfish have been trained to 'drive' a robotic tank around a room.  Scientists in Israel constructed a 'fish operated vehicle' consisting of a water-filled tank, a camera and a computer on top of a set of wheels.  In tests, the onboard camera and computer were able to detect the fish's position in real time and activate the vehicle motors to move the vehicle in the same direction.   Six goldfish were successfully trained to use the bizarre device and managed to find their way around the small room towards a food reward.  The results suggest that fish can adjust their navigation skills 'to a wholly different terrestrial environment', according to the researchers.   'The fish were tasked to "drive" the FOV towards a visual target in the terrestrial environment, which was observable through the walls of the tank. '[Goldfish] were able to operate the vehicle, explore the new environment, and reach the target regardless of the starting point, all while avoiding dead-ends and correcting location inaccuracies.'   The researchers had wanted to take one species from...
by Paul Steidler   As Democrats regroup and forge ahead with plans to implement components of the Build Back Better legislation killed by Senator Joe Manchin, calls for the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to be given billions to electrify its vehicle fleet are likely to soon reach a fever pitch. USPS is a high-profile, well-regarded institution through which progressives want to unveil new programs. Progressives pulled out all the stops to provide USPS with electric vehicle funding in 2021 and will likely double down in 2022. Republicans and fiscal conservatives in Washington, D.C. should push back hard. Electric vehicle subsidies for USPS epitomize what is wrong in Washington, D.C. and how proven, time-tested financial restraint and related guard rails are being eviscerated. USPS needs a new delivery vehicle fleet, and it has been on the path to purchasing the vehicles long before Build Back Better was ever conceived. New car models sold in the EU from mid-2022 will be required by law to record driving data that can be viewed in the event of an accident. New car models, as well as any other road vehicle, sold in the EU from mid-2022 will be required to record technical data, such as the direction of the steering wheel and vehicle speed, so that it can be used in the event of a crash. The new rule will coincide with the forced introduction of Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) systems for new vehicle models next year. According to a report by Der Spiegel, a so-called “Event Data Recorder” — also referred to as a “black box”, similar to those already found in aircraft — will possibly enable police to understand if an accident was caused by driver error, depending on the incident. In this article FThe "2021" numerals were towed into Times Square last December by the Kia Sorento SUV after a cross-country road-trip that started at the automaker's U.S. headquarters in Irvine, California, and covered more than 5,500 miles with stops in 15 states.KiaDETROIT – The automotive industry may never be the same after 2021, an infamous year that brought massive changes sparked by supply chain issues and the coronavirus pandemic. The supply chain issues – most notably, a global shortage of semiconductor chips – led to historically low vehicle inventories but also record pricing and profits amid resilient consumer demand and the lack of available cars and trucks. It's a situation that some auto executives such as Ford Motor CEO Jim Farley have pledged to continue when the industry is not in a time of crisis because of the higher margins for the automaker as well as its dealers. "This is a better way to run our business," Farley told investors earlier this year. "We have the most complicated go-to-market system I think on planet Earth. We could simplify all...
If someone were asked to design the ultimate electric vehicle for the U.S. market, something like the Rivian R1T would surely be the result. The Rivian R1T can ford three feet of water. (Rivian) The first truck from the American startup automaker combines the popular pickup body style with a roomy, premium interior and the power of a muscle car. More power than any muscle car ever, in fact. The R1T Launch Edition that went on sale this fall has a four-motor drivetrain with a combined 835 hp, which makes it the king of performance pickups, too. The Rivian R1T's air suspension can raise and lower the ride height. (Rivian) It's also equipped with a computer-controlled air suspension system that can lower the vehicle to give it the driving dynamics of a sports sedan, or raise it to deliver over 14 inches of ground clearance and extreme off-road capability. All this with a driving range of 314 miles per charge and a maximum tow rating of 11,000 pounds, just not at the same time. The Rivian Camp...
While electric cars accounted for just 8% of California’s new light vehicle sales in the first nine months of 2021, such purchases are expected to increase dramatically — and with them, the odds that you’ll be thinking more about going electric yourself. Gov. Gavin Newsom in 2020 set a nonbinding goal of having all new passenger vehicles sold in 2035 be zero emission, but the state Air Resources Board will consider making that a mandate for carmakers and dealers in the coming year. Meanwhile, clean air activists are pushing for additional incentives, carmakers continue to expand their electric offerings, and technology is making the vehicles increasingly attractive. While the electric market continues to be a small share of total cars sold, the 123,244 new electric vehicle registrations in the state over the first nine months of 2021 was a 68% jump over the same period in 2020, according to an analysis by the California Business Roundtable. ASKING a driver for their license and registration is a common procedure from police officers during a routine traffic stop. However, another practice drivers may be unaware of is an officer touching the back of their taillight. 2A police officer touching the back of your taillight is a common police actionCredit: Getty Why do police touch the back of your car when they pull you over? There are many reasons why US police officers touch a vehicle's taillight when they pull a driver over. According to Law Dictionary, before cameras were installed on the dashboards of most police vehicles, tapping the taillight was a way for officers to leave behind evidence of the encounter. If something were to happen to the officer during the traffic stop, their interaction with the driver could be traced back to the fingerprints left on the vehicle. Tesla was The first builder Use the smartphone as the car key, open and start the vehicles. It is still the same today, the default key of the Model 3 being its phone, which replaces the hands-free key of the historic manufacturer, which I describe in this article: Six months at Tesla: On board, firm geek minimalism The Tesla iOS processor gives you complete control of the car and also acts as a hands-free key to unlock it. The American company has not yet shown interest in attached watches. While the Apple Watch will celebrate its seventh anniversary next year, Tesla has never modified its iOS app to run on WatchOS, but that is likely to change in the coming months. As Developer Romain Chickenberg found, the latest version of the iOS app contains watchkit-related code, which is Apple’s framework for building applications for your watch. This code indicates that the Tesla WatchOS app is working, but the company plans to do just that. It may be a matter of copying certain functions of the smartphone application,...

The "Bomb Dudes" jumped at the opportunity and carted the Tesla out to an old quarry in Jaala, a remote village two hours northeast of Helsinki. There, they strapped it with 66 pounds of high-powered explosives and set up cameras to capture the blast in slow motion. Just before the detonation, a dummy with Tesla CEO Elon Musk's face was flown in on a helicopter to operate the vehicle as it met its fate. Then the crew retreated to a blast shelter, Katainen pressed the button, and the car was no more. A short pause was followed by a massive flash-bang as a charge ran along the detonation cord and the dynamite sticks erupted in fire. What else?Tesla's standard warranty for a Model S covers eight years or 150,000 miles, but Business Insider noted that it "may be voided if the battery is opened or serviced by anyone not authorized by Tesla" and that it doesn't cover "damage resulting from intentional actions," such as modifications. In Katainen's case, the exorbitant cost of a battery replacement effectively forced him to give up...

The Bottom Line: What is an Edge? The Edge is a range of crossover CUV’s manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced in the 2007 model year, the Edge is the first midsize CUV crossover utility vehicle marketed by Ford in North America, and the model line is currently in its second generation.   The 2021 Ford Edge is a midsize 5 passenger CUV that slots between the smaller Ford Escape and the larger Ford Explorer. It is in the midsize SUV class with 10 competitors, and they are: the Subaru Outback, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Chevy Blazer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Honda Passport, Nissan Murano, Toyota 4Runner, Toyota Venza, and  the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport. In this category you have got to be good to compete.   A CUV crossover utility vehicle is a nice blend of a tall car, a minivan, a station wagon and a SUV. You get the higher ride height, the 4 doors, a large cargo area, and the option of AWD all wheel drive. Just like an SUV, a CUV can go and do...
THIS is the Ford E-Transit. The most important vehicle of the decade. That’s a big statement, but think about it for a moment. 5Ford E-Transit is the most important vehicle of the decade & packed with power Your Christmas presents arrived by van. The food you ate almost certainly spent some of its life in a van. The house you’re sitting in was built by someone who, you guessed it, drove a van. And because we live in Britain there’s a really, really high chance that at least one — maybe all — of those vans was a Ford Transit. They’re more popular than pigs in blankets — and that’s what makes this all-electric version so significant. It’s not just the E-Transit badge but the power its packing that also makes this van special. The E-Transit has 265hp, along with a 181hp option, making it not just the most powerful electric van but the most powerful of any diesel van on the market. You’re probably thinking a van that potent won’t go far then. But with a 68kWh battery (the...
A new hovering lunar rover has been developed by scientists, who say it will be able to levitate by harnessing the moon's natural charge. The device, which resembles a classic flying saucer, works by taking advantage of the electric field that builds up on the moon and other airless bodies like asteroids. A team of aerospace engineers at MIT say the electric field builds up thanks to the direct exposure of their surface to solar radiation, due to a lack of atmosphere.  On the moon, the surface charge is strong enough to levitate moon dust more than 3ft above the ground in a similar way to static electricity makes hair stand on end.  The MIT team is disc-shaped and uses tiny ion beams to charge up the vehicle and boost the natural charge on the lunar surface, generating force on little power. It's just a concept at the moment and has only been tested in simulations, rather than real world environments, but they are confident it will operate as predicted. They hope that future missions to the moon and asteroids...

Two children have been caught red-handed trying to steal a car from outside its owner's home in broad daylight. There were at least two others in the car as well as the two who got out and attempted to steal my car.' Police later confirmed the getaway car was stolen, with the driver believed to be a woman aged in...
