FBI Director Christopher Wray told a House committee in June that his agency was unable to monitor extremist social media accounts without 'proper predication,' a claim that is contrary to the FBI's published guidelines. The details of the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection are gradually emerging into view, thanks to evidence released in the indictments against key players such as Stewart Rhodes and his Oath Keepers. But there are still a number of lingering mysteries still to be resolved—and one of the most pressing is the question: Why was federal law enforcement, particularly the FBI, so utterly unprepared? Jason Paladino at Grid recently examined all of the FBI’s rationales for its failure to adequately prepare for the siege against Congress, and concluded correctly that all of them fail the sniff test. The only reasonable conclusion—particularly as the evidence is assembled for public viewing—is that federal law enforcement’s cozy relationship with these right-wing extremists blinded them to the reality of the nature of the beast they thought they could use as an ally. As Paladino observes, there had been more than adequate...

Ron DeSantis and other Republicans who accused social-media platforms of censorship. DeSantis made the issue high-profile after former President Donald Trump was blocked from Facebook and Twitter after Trump supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. by Jeanna Matthews, Clarkson University Have you had the experience of looking at some product online and then seeing ads for it all over your social media feed? Far from coincidence, these instances of eerily accurate advertising provide glimpses into the behind-the-scenes mechanisms that feed an item you search for on Google, “like” on social media or come across while browsing into custom advertising on social media. Those mechanisms are increasingly being used for more nefarious purposes than aggressive advertising. The threat is in how this targeted advertising interacts with today’s extremely divisive political landscape. As a social media researcher, I see how people seeking to radicalize others use targeted advertising to readily move people to extreme views.Advertising to an audience of oneAdvertising is clearly powerful. The right ad campaign can help shape or create demand for a new product or rehabilitate the image of an older product or even of an entire company or brand. Political campaigns use similar strategies to push candidates and ideas, and historically countries have used them to wage propaganda wars. Advertising in mass...

A prominent black conservative has been banned from MAGA social media site Gettr for using the N-word in his profile after the app promoted itself as a 'cancel-free zone.'  Jon Miller, a black right-wing pundit and former Blaze TV host, was forced to take to rival site Twitter to expose the 'free speech frauds' at Gettr after his account was suspended.   He claimed that he was booted for 'no reason' and didn't create any posts using the slur, though admitted he used the N-word as part of his profile.  'Guess I was too critical of them for suspending others? What does it say when the 1st platform to ban me is the one that sells itself as the free speech alternative?' Miller tweeted with a photo showing the notice of his suspension.  Gettr's global communications director Ebony Bowden quickly fired back on Twitter, accusing him of using the racial slur on the site.  'You are a liar @MillerStream. You did use our platform, and you included the N-word in your profile, a clear violation of our terms of service. GETTR...

Nearly everyone has had that moment when you’re feeling unwell and look up your symptoms online, only to panic a few minutes later when you notice the symptoms sound similar to a more serious ailment. Something similar is now happening on social media websites like TikTok, but instead of naming physical symptoms, people are listing signs of rare mental disorders.  Psychologists and mental health professionals are ringing alarm bells to warn that these user-created videos should not be taken as a diagnosis. "People can easily be convinced that they have a rare disorder based only on what they see on social media," said John Delatorre, a licensed psychologist who practices in Arizona and Texas. "Similar to those who strictly adhere to comments about astrological signs, the general nature of describing the symptoms of a mental disorder can make it so that people will apply that generality to their own behaviors." PEOPLE PEELING RAW EGGS HAS BECOME A VIRAL TREND ON TIKTOK Delatorre went on to note that people tend to feel more comfortable getting their information from sources they deem...

New York (CNN Business)January 6 was a clear turning point for major social media companies — proving that they would, under certain circumstances, be willing to deplatform a sitting US president. But some experts worry that they still haven't done enough to address the underlying issues that allowed Trump supporters and others on the far-right to be misled and radicalized, and to get organized using their platforms. Ahead of the one-year anniversary Facebook-parent company Meta, Twitter and YouTube say they have been monitoring their platforms for harmful content related to the Capitol riot. "We have strong policies that we continue to enforce, including a ban on hate organizations and removing content that praises or supports them," a Meta spokesperson told CNN, adding that the company has been in contact with law enforcement agencies including the FBI and Capitol Police around the anniversary. As part of its efforts, Facebook is proactively monitoring for content praising the Capitol riot, as well as content calling for people to carry or use weapons in Washington DC, according to the company. If you don’t know who David Brody is, God bless you. He’s a longtime TV personality from the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), whose hits include promoting the idea that Donald Trump has been blessed by God to own a private golf course. (True story.) In Brody and CBN’s defense, the conservative Christian God that they pray to is a shitty misogynist. Brody and his employer lost a lot of access to the White House after Donald Trump was trounced by Joe Biden in the 2020 election. Brody has made sure to allow sentient bile tank Trump to promote the Big Lie and whatever other grotesquery the far right doggedly proposes. A Denver police investigator sets out flares near the scene where they shot and killed Lyndon McLeod at the end of his hourlong murder rampage on Monday. It’s a telling commentary on the state of modern American media that a lethal act of domestic terrorism like last weekend’s shooting rampage in Denver by a radicalized far-right misogynist seems to have, at most, raised only a momentary blip on the national radar. Because it’s an important story that not only reminds us that “lone wolves” acting on behalf of far-right ideologies remain our most lethal terrorist threat, but indicates that the violent insurgency the American right has been embracing since before Jan. 6 may be ratcheting things up. The incident is also a stark illustration of how the extremist right meshes across its various sectors—from the “respectable” and well-financed “Intellectual Dark Web” to conspiracist Trump fanatics to the “anti-communist” posturing of the Proud Boys to the festering cesspit of the misogynist “manosphere”—into a singular radicalizing force. The shooter’s writings and his social media activity—particularly his connections there to well-known right-wing figures...

State legislators in the Democrat stronghold of New York are pushing a bill that would allow lawsuits to be brought against tech companies that spread so-called misinformation. The bill would allow the New York attorney general, city corporations, as well as private citizens to sue tech companies that “knowingly or recklessly” promote information that “endangers the health or safety of the public,” a category that, according to Democrat state senator, would encompass “hate speech” as well as disinformation. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images) “We need real world solutions to the growing problems of online disinformation and hate speech. Throwing your hands up and saying nothing can be done isn’t sufficient. People’s lives are endangered everyday and nobody’s being held accountable,” said Hoylman.   Legal experts contacted by the New York Post argue that Hoylman’s bill is unlikely to stand up in court.
