President Joe Biden will hold a rare solo press conference on Wednesday evening, the day before his one-year annivesary in office, where he is expected to defend his tenure in the White House and preview his plans for the next three years.  He will also likely face questions on the issues of the day - voting rights, his Build Back Better bill, his declining approval rating, Russia and the Ukraine, inflation and the Omicron variant of COVID.  His last solo press conference in the White House was in March and his last formal press conference was in October, when he was in Glasgow, Scotland for COP26. He has held solo press conferences on foreign trips and joint ones with world leaders in addition to taking questions from reporters on the fly. In total, Biden has held six news conferences on his own and three jointly with foreign leaders - a number far below that of his predecessors in the Oval Office.  White House press secretary Jen Psaki started the defense of Biden's first year in her press briefing Tuesday when she...

The outgoing Finance Minister and new German Chancellor Minister Olaf Scholz delivers a speech during the handing-over ceremony with his successor in the German Federal Ministry of Finances in Berlin, Germany, December 9, 2021.Tobias Schwarz | Reuters Borrowing costs for the German government continued their push higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark 10-year bund yield trading in positive territory for the first time in nearly three years. May 2019 was the last time that German 10-year yields were above zero, when accommodative policy from the European Central Bank pressured interest rates lower. Negative yields meant that investors were effectively paying the German government to lend it money. The ECB is currently behind on its normalization path, compared to the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England, but surging inflation and wider moves in the global bond market have now helped to push yields above zero. Euro zone inflation hit a new record high in December, raising more questions about the ECB's monetary policy. The central bank said last month that it would be cutting its monthly asset purchases, but vowed to...

Builder confidence fell one point to 83 in January, according to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index (HMI). Anything above 50 is considered positive, but that is the first drop in four months. The index also stood at 83 in January 2021. "Higher material costs and lack of availability are adding weeks to typical single-family construction times," said NAHB Chairman Chuck Fowke, a homebuilder from Tampa, Florida. "NAHB analysis indicates the aggregate cost of residential construction materials has increased almost 19% since December 2021." The price of softwood lumber alone has jumped about 85% in just the last three months, according to Random Lengths. Lumber prices spike last spring and then came down dramatically over the summer. A lot of memorable NBA players are getting a second chance…due to a new wave of a deadly pandemic. Can any joy be found here? For the third straight season, the NBA has been thoroughly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. While the season was able to start on time, and the league has managed to avoid a stoppage in play, the Omicron variant has wreaked havoc on things, often finding teams scrambling for players. As a result, we’ve seen more players play in the NBA this season than in any previous year, and we’ve only just crossed the halfway point. Teams like the Chicago Bulls and Memphis Grizzlies have had nearly half their rosters in COVID protocols, while a game between the Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors had to be postponed because the Nuggets didn’t have the minimum eight players necessary to play an NBA game. After thinking that just maaaayyybe the pandemic was effectively over, the last month has been a rather intense reality check for basketball fans. The harsh realities of this situation led to the creation...

The much-anticipated games will mark the first time that Jamaica has qualified for three different bobsleigh events, securing their place in the four-man, two-man sled and women’s monobob categories.  Their four-man team took the final spot in the 28-sled field in qualification, which is the first time since 1998 that the event will have Jamaican representation in the category.   However, they missed out on a two-woman place after losing a tiebreaker - but could still make it to China as first alternate if one of the qualified nations give up a spot.  Jamaica's bobsleigh team have qualified for the Beijing Winter Olympics next month - making it the first time in 24 years the country's four-man team will participate The much-anticipated games will mark the first time that Jamaica has qualified for three different bobsleigh events, securing their place in the four-man, two-man sled and women’s monobob categories The last time Jamaica had a four-man...
(CNN)As President Joe Biden approaches his one-year mark in office, he is hard-pressed to find any key political signals pointing in his party's direction. And now, a new analysis of polling from Gallup highlights how rapidly the Democrats' standing with the public has deteriorated since the start of Biden's term. Gallup found that in their polls conducted in the first quarter of 2021, an average of 49% of Americans identified with or leaned toward the Democratic Party, compared to 40% for the Republican Party. (That represented the largest lead Democrats held on this metric since the fourth quarter of 2012.)Read More But by the fourth quarter of 2021, the Democrats' average advantage had completely vanished: 47% of those surveyed identified with or leaned toward the GOP, compared to 42% for the Democrats -- a net swing of 14 points. According to Gallup, a shift this dramatic is not the norm. In fact, the Republicans' five-point edge in party preference is the largest they have established over the Democrats since 1995 -- right after the GOP took control of the...
Prince Charles has invited Prince Harry and his family to stay with him in the UK in the hope of meeting Lilibet for the first time, it emerged tonight. The offer, which would be the first time the family have fully come together since Harry and Meghan decided to quit as working royals, was made just before Christmas, according to the Mirror. However, his son's refusal to return without a substantial level of security from the Met Police is said to have put the reunion in doubt. WE all know how to empty the hoover, but did you know you should also regularly clean its hose pipe? One woman decided to do just that after seeing someone else do it on social media, and was stunned by the amount of muck that came out. 1Rachael Stammers was stunned when she saw the amount of dirt that emerged when she soaked her Henry hoover's hose pipe for the first timeCredit: FACEBOOK "I have a Henry, and love it!" At just 21 years old, Blob – who was unable to defend the title on Thursday – he was in touch – and saw Rohan Dennis win there, reached a good number in the road race: he was left alone thirty kilometers away from the group. , He returned to the last fleeing James Whelan, who dropped him on the final ascent of Mount Puninyong and won alone. “I could not have asked for a better start. President Joe Biden will give a formal press conference next week, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Friday – as the president starts the year with low poll numbers and faces defeat of two key agenda items.  Wednesday will mark 78 days since his last formal press conference  – a period that has seen Biden's approval rating slide, amid the spread of the omicron variant, the failure to pass his Build Back Better plan, and his so far unsuccessful effort to move voting rights legislation. As of Friday, Biden had gone 73 days without such an event. Biden will face the press on Jan. 19, the anniversary of former President Donald Trump's last full day in office.  White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, who has been fending off questions from reporters for weeks about when Biden would hold such an event, mentioned it at the top of her briefing Friday. President Joe Biden is scheduled to hold a formal press conference Wednesday. He has taken questions at less formal events, as he did at the Capitol Thursday, often fielding...
ASTRONOMERS witnessed the 'violent death' of a red supergiant star for the first time, a new study says. Scientists also observed the star's final days before its massive explosion turned it into a supernova, according to the findings, which were published in the Astrophysical Journal on January 6. 2This original artwork depicts a red supergiant star as it's about to explodeCredit: W.M. Keck Observatory/Adam Makarenko The star was first discovered by researchers from Northwestern University and the University of California, Berkeley, in summer 2020. The team used the University of Hawaii’s Pan-STARRS telescope which is perched atop Haleakalā Observatory in Maui to observe the star, which data concluded was ten times more massive than our Sun. However, much to their surprise, researchers discovered a few months later that the automated telescope had actually captured the star's death. The observations also revealed a lot of dense circumstellar material floating around the star during the explosion. "The death of a massive star like this, it's very dramatic and very violent. We've never really seen anything like this," Wynn Jacobson-Galán, an astrophysicist at UC Berkeley and lead author...
THE UK's daily Covid cases have fallen below 100,000 for the first time in three weeks. Infections have dipped to 99,652 today, in a promising sign the country is moving past the Omicron peak. 1The UK is back below 100,000 daily cases for the first time in weeksCredit: LNP The last time figures were below 100,000 was Christmas Day, but this was likely due to people not being tested. But December 19 saw 81,761 new cases in 24 hours, before it began to steadily increase over the next two weeks. For the past seven days, infections have fallen hugely from record highs of over 200,000-per-day in an encouraging sign. It follows the release of Sage documents today, which revealed fresh data showed Omicron is 65 per cent less likely to cause death compared to Delta. Patients in hospital with the variant have also been found to have shorter stays, and are less likely to need oxygen or intensive care. Yesterday an expert hailed the UK is "on the other side" of the Omicron peak. Most read in Health NewsHIGH ALERT...
By Todd Woody | Bloomberg Endangered Coho salmon are returning to Marin County, California, creeks this winter where they’ve long been absent, thanks to intense rains that scientists say will become more frequent as the state swings between climate-driven drought and deluge. It’s a rare bit of good news for a species whose population has plummeted in recent decades due to development and pollution. In the San Francisco Bay Area, thousands of salmon historically made the annual migration from the Pacific Ocean to the redwood-shrouded creeks in Marin County where they were born. There they would spawn the next generation of fish before dying. In recent years that population has dwindled to just a few hundred salmon and the future looked dire as California’s record-breaking drought dried out streams. But an atmospheric river that inundated the Bay Area in October followed by heavy rains in December filled creeks in the largely rural county, allowing salmon to navigate culverts and other obstacles to reach creeks that had previously been impassable. First-time sightings of Chinook salmon in creeks have also been reported. “Salmon have...

Astronomers have captured the death of a red supergiant star for the first time.  The real-time discovery was published Jan. 6 in Astrophysical Journal and led by researchers at Northwestern University and the University of California, Berkeley.  JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE IS FULLY DEPLOYED According to a press release from Northwestern, the team observed the red supergiant during the last 130 days before it collapsed into a Type II supernova.  Previous observations showed that red supergiants were relatively inactive before their deaths, without any evidence of violent eruptions or luminous emissions.  These researchers, however, detected bright radiation from a red supergiant in the final year before exploding.  "This is a breakthrough in our understanding of what massive stars do moments before they die," Wynn Jacobson-Galán, the study’s lead author, said in a statement. "Direct detection of pre-supernova activity in a red supergiant star has never been observed before in an ordinary type II supernova. For the first time, we watched a red supergiant star explode." The work – which was conducted at Northwestern before Jacobson-Galán moved to UC Berkeley – suggests...

Donald Trump's former campaign manager has said he was pressured to lie about the then-president by special counsel Robert Mueller's investigative team. Paul Manafort, 72, spoke on Wednesday night to Fox News' Sean Hannity for the first time since being pardoned by Trump more than a year ago. Manafort was charged in 2017 with conspiracy against the United States, making false statements, money laundering and failing to register as a foreign agent for Ukraine. Manafort - a globetrotting lobbyist famed for representing dubious characters such as Congolese President Mobutu Sese Seko, Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines, and Nigerian coup leader Sani Abacha - was the figurehead for accusations that Russian President Vladimir Putin helped elect Trump.  Manafort was accused of working with Russia to help Trump win the election - something which was never proved, and he has always denied. In August 2018, he was found guilty of filing false income tax returns, failing to report his foreign accounts, and bank fraud, and he spent a little of a year in prison before being released to house arrest in May 2020,...
MLB might still be locked out but Braves fans should still be getting hyped with the progress that Ronald Acuña Jr. is making in his rehab. It’s been a banner few months for Georgia sports fans, which started with the Atlanta Braves winning the World Series for the first time since 1995. That was followed up on Monday with the Georgia Bulldogs capturing a national title for the first time since 1980. Looking back at the World Series victory, though, of the many remarkable things about what Atlanta accomplished, perhaps the wildest is that their best player, superstar outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr., tore his ACL in early July, ending his season. That means the Braves hoisted the trophy at the Fall Classic without their best player. Despite that, fans are eagerly awaiting his return in 2022 — assuming that the lockout eventually subsides and we get a season. And on that front, Acuña took the next step in his rehab from the surgery to repair the injury as he took batting practice on the field for the first time since...
Derek Carr has been praying about leading the Raiders in the playoffs since he was drafted in 2014, and those prayers seemed to be answered in 2016 when his team steamrolled to a 12-3 record the first 16 weeks of that playoff-clinching season. The problem for Carr was that in the fourth quarter of that fateful 15th game, a win over the Indianapolis Colts, he fractured his right fibula. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM So while his team did indeed continue on to the postseason, Carr could not play. And, not surprisingly, the Raiders lost to Houston in the Wild Card Round. President Joe Biden drew laughs and raised some eyebrows during his voting rights speech with a joke about “the first time I got arrested,” and Mediaite has obtained previously unpublished transcripts that suggest what the president could have been talking about. During the president’s fiery speech in Atlanta Tuesday afternoon, he injected a bit of levity into an emotional section about civil rights heroes: I did not live the struggle of Douglass, Tubman, King, Lewis, Goodman, Chaney, and Schwerner, and countless others — known and unknown. I did not walk in the shoes of generations of students who walked these grounds. But I walked other grounds. Because I’m so damn old, I was there as well. (Laughter.) You think I’m kidding, man. (Laughter.) It seems like yesterday the first time I got arrested. Anyway — (laughter). That reference to the “first time” he was arrested caused some to recall earlier controversies over Biden’s inaccurate recollections of his experiences with the civil rights movement, and an incident in South Africa that he described as an “arrest” but later walked back. But...
The Academy Awards will have a host in 2022 for the first time in three years, but there’s still no word on who it will be. In 2019, a controversy surrounding Kevin Hart led to the decision by ABC to move forward with the award show without a host for the first time in recent memory. Audiences seemingly responded positively to the change given the ratings that the Oscars got that year, so the network decided to keep with that format, until now.  Speaking at the Television Critics Association virtual press tour, Hulu Originals & ABC Entertainment President Craig Erwich revealed that the network is currently on the hunt for a pop culture savvy host to helm the show for the first time since Jimmy Kimmel did the job for the 2017 and 2018 seasons.  BILLY CRYSTAL SAYS THE OSCARS NEEDS A HOST AFTER 2021 AWARDS HIT RECORD-LOW RATINGS The Oscars will have a host  for the first time in three years. (CNN)In 2021, Honda was outsold in the United States by the combined forces of two South Korean brands, Hyundai and Kia. Taken together, the two Seoul-based brands ranked fifth in US sales, delivering 1,439,497 cars, trucks and minivans. Japan-based Honda sold 1,309,222. Looking at just these mainstream brands, Hyundai and Kia outsold Honda by more than 130,000 vehicled, the first time the combined brands have outsold Honda. If their respective luxury brands are included -- Hyundai's Genesis and Honda's Acura -- the margin is much narrower, just 22,000 sales, but the Korean brands still come out slightly ahead. These sales figures were supplied by the automakers. For Kia, it was the first time the brand ever sold more than 700,000 vehicles in one year. Hyundai set a record for retail sales -- meaning excluding sales to fleet customers -- and increased its market share by eight-tenths of a percentage point. Early last week, newly sworn-in Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg sent a memo to staff in which he briefly recounted his personal experiences with the inadequacies and inequities of New York City’s criminal justice system, before announcing changes to prosecutorial policy aimed at fixing them. “Data, and my personal experiences show that reserving incarceration for matters involving significant harm will make us safer,” Manhattan’s first Black district attorney emphasized. The top prosecutor went on to instruct staff to cease charging petty, low-level crimes—subway fare evasion, marijuana misdemeanors, prostitution and resisting arrest, among them—and to seek bail and jail time only in cases involving violence, sex abuse, and major financial offenses. Prosecutors should also ask for “no more than a maximum of 20 years,” Bragg advised, directing staff overseeing the most extreme cases to consider restorative justice as an alternative to simply tacking on years to sentences. “These policy changes not only will, in and of themselves, make us safer; they also will free up prosecutorial resources to focus on violent crime,” Bragg concluded, adding that “while my commitment to making...
3 hours before The film was released, University of Maryland School of Medicine Comment on the photo, Surgeon Bartley Griffiths took a photo of David Bennett earlier this month Doctors in the United States have announced the success of the first operation to transplant a genetically modified pig heart into the human body. Doctors say David Bennett, who underwent surgery three days after the seven-hour operation, is fine. The operation was seen as Bennett’s last hope of saving his life, although it is not yet clear what his chances of survival will be in the long run. The day before the surgery, Bennett, 57, said, “I’m going to die or I have to have this surgery, which is my last wish.” Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center have obtained a special exemption from U.S. medical authorities to perform surgery on the grounds that Bennett may have died. According to the medical team that performed the procedure, this is the culmination of many years of research and could change lives around the world. “This will bring the world of...

Sponsored Content With over 15 years of experience in the network marketing industry, Jose Ardon has successfully accomplished every goal he has set for himself. Born into poverty, Jose questioned what fundamental differences existed between his own life and the lives of the rich. Deciding to find out for himself, he set out to move to the United States at the age of 17. Upon arriving, Jose quickly got to work, moving from job to job, and experiencing a variety of industries, from food services to construction and everything in between. That is, until 2004, when Jose was introduced to network marketing. He recalls, “I remember hearing a story from a motivational speaker about how his life was transformed and how he had become a millionaire through direct selling, having the freedom to be his own boss while earning residual income. That same time, I told myself I will become a millionaire, or I will die trying, but I will never give up.” His first goal was to earn $120,000 in the year that followed. As he accomplished this...
The Chicago Bears hired Matt Nagy in 2018 — and it was quite the roller coaster. Jan. 8, 2018: Nagy hired as the franchise’s 16th head coach Why did the Bears pick Matt Nagy? He fit the quarterback-centric profile GM Ryan Pace desired as part of his master plan for quarterback Mitch Trubisky to return the team to relevance after four consecutive double-digit-loss seasons. “Matt’s a proven leader,” Pace said Jan. 9, 2018. “He’s a winner. He’s intelligent. He’s innovative. He has strong character. He has a great family, and he shares the same passion for the game that I have.” Pace emphasized that Nagy’s leadership qualities superseded his quarterback expertise as the main factor in the decision to hire him for the first head-coaching role of his career. (CNN)In a troublesome sign for President Joe Biden's climate goals, US greenhouse emissions rebounded from a pandemic slump faster in 2021 than the overall economy, according to a preliminary analysis by the nonpartisan Rhodium Group. Energy analysts had expected to see a rebound of planet-warming emissions in 2021. But even so, the growth outpaced expectations, according to Kate Larsen, a partner at Rhodium Group and a co-author of the report. "Emissions grew even faster than the economic recovery and that was largely the rebound in coal generation," Larsen told CNN, noting that "there weren't any significant policies to make economic growth less carbon-intensive." Preliminary 2021 data from Rhodium estimates economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions increased 6.2% compared to 2020 -- which saw a steep drop in emissions due to the Covid-19 economic shutdown. Still, 2021 emissions remained 5% below 2019 levels. US vs. China: How the worlds two biggest emitters stack up on climateCoal use was a big driver of the rebound in emissions, according to the Rhodium report. Coal burned for electricity spiked 17% in 2021, the first year since...

The Duchess of Cambridge’s 40th birthday portraits are a departure from her usual official images. For many years in the Kate-sphere, the emphasis has always been on the family, the down-home, the sporty and the wholesome. Who could forget the charming Christmas cards with William and the children, everyone in those darling heritage woollies, doubtlessly picked out by her own impeccably tasteful hand? Elsewhere there has been toasting marshmallows on the beach at Holkham, smiling in country casuals on the cover of Vogue and even perching on a farm gate in a pair of jeans to mark her 38th birthday. The images, taken by glossy magazine favourite Paolo Roversi, pay homage to the classic royal portraiture of yesteryear without being mere pastiche Modesty has always been Kate’s watchword and ever-so-humble her signature style. If anything, she is a spotlight shirker, preferring to be seen in a supportive role at her husband’s side.  In the royal hen house, she never wanted to be the golden egg, sizzling amid the omelette of attention. She’s just not that kind of chick. However, these...
(CNN)Like many people, historian A. Roger Ekirch thought that sleep was a biological constant -- that eight hours of rest a night never really varied over time and place. But while researching nocturnal life in preindustrial Europe and America, he discovered the first evidence that many humans used to sleep in segments -- a first sleep and second sleep with a break of a few hours in between to have sex, pray, eat, chat and take medicine. "Here was a pattern of sleep unknown to the modern world," said Ekirch, a university distinguished professor in the department of history at Virginia Tech.Ekirch's subsequent book, "At Day's Close: Night in Times Past," unearthed more than 500 references to what's since been termed biphasic sleep. Ekirch has now found more than 2,000 references in a dozen languages and going back in time as far as ancient Greece. His 2004 book will be republished in April. Sleep training for adults prevents depression, study findsThe practice of sleeping through the whole night didn't really take hold until just a few hundred years ago, his work...
THE mother of a missing New Hampshire girl, Harmony Montgomery, has spoken for the first time since her disappearance two years ago. The seven-year-old, who was not in the care of her biological mother Crystal Sorey, hasn't been seen since October 2019 when cops were called to a home in Manchester. 2Harmony Montgomery hasn't been seen since 2019 2On Saturday her biological mother issued a plea that she would 'never stop looking' Her disappearance, however, wasn't reported until two years later - the last week of December 2021. Ever since, Police have carried out a search for the young girl and this week raided a home where Harmony was last known to have lived. The girl’s step-mom and father have this week faced separate charges in court, but so far nobody has been arrested in connection with her disappearance. And on Saturday, speaking at a candlelight vigil attending by family and friends, Harmony’s mother Sory broke her silence on the case and issued a message to her daughter. "Hi, baby. If you can see me and hear me, I want you to know...
Replacing boardrooms with megachurches, private planes and limousines with steer horn-adorned Cadillacs and glitzy party buses, and dapper suits and designer dresses with leopard-print shoes and white cowboy hats, The Righteous Gemstones is a lunatic Southern televangelist variation on Succession. Returning to HBO for its second season on Jan. 9, Danny McBride’s alternately absurdist and heartfelt skewering of those who peddle religion for profit is a kindred spirit to the cable network’s dramatic powerhouse, rife with toxic masculine dysfunction and hostile tensions between entitled sons who want to inherit their fathers’ empires (and earn their love) while simultaneously establishing their own independence. In the same vein as McBride’s Eastbound & Down and Vice Principals, it’s a portrait of pathetically mad, narcissistic men and the striving women who can’t resist them, and in its latest run, it ups the ante in almost every respect. As evidenced by its second season’s opening scene, The Righteous Gemstones also hasn’t lost its fondness for full-frontal nudity, and the fact that its initial shot of a penis is accompanied by someone remarking,...
The wait is nearly over for Klay Thompson as well as Warriors fans. Sunday, Thompson will return to the court for the first time since Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals, when he tore the ACL in his left knee. What was hoped to be just one season away has agonizingly stretched to nearly two and a half for the 31-year-old Thompson. The absence was prolonged by an Achilles tendon injury he suffered during a pickup game shortly before training camp was set to open in November 2020. Now there finally is a finish line to that long, tortuous road for Thompson and his legion of fans. Sunday. At home. Against the Cleveland Cavaliers. It will have been 941 days since Thompson suffered his knee injury during the third quarter of the deciding game against the Toronto Raptors on June 13, 2019. Nobody had even heard of the coronavirus that day. Donald Trump was president. What else has happened (or was happening) in the world since Thompson’s last game? Here’s a sampling: ...
