The campaign is called “NYC Winter Outing.” READ MORE: LIRR Commuters Sound Alarm On Frigid Conditions And Limited Heated Waiting RoomsHotels, shows, museums and restaurants are all offering a unique experience for a fraction of the usual price. As CBS2’s Lisa Rozner reports, with Jamaican jerk chicken, tamarind-glazed salmon and oxtail flatbread, walk into Kokomo in Williamsburg and you’ll quickly forget it’s winter in New York City. “My background is Jamaican and my wife is Trinidadian. It’s one of more than 500 restaurants participating in Restaurant Week, which actually goes until Feb. 13. Prix fixe meals range from $29-$59 for lunch and dinner. It’s a much-needed boost for restaurants that opened during the pandemic, like southeast Asian-inspired Piggyback in Midtown. “It helps drive traffic during the really slow months of the year, which is January and...

A grandmother was shot dead Saturday morning at the restaurant she worked at for the past 34 years after she tried to help a co-worker who had just gotten to work escape a gunman who was trying to rob them outside. Robin Baucom, 59, was shot in the torso and rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where she later died, according to Harris County deputies. The incident happened at a Cracker Barrel on North Freeway in Houston after Buacom's colleague arrived at about 6.15am, KTRK reports.  Deputies say the co-worker was suddenly approached by a man in the passenger seat of a 2018 or newer metallic gray Dodge Charger. The man allegedly got out of the car and tried to grab the employee's purse. Baucom, a manager at the restaurant who was already inside, let her employee in and pushed back on the door to stop the man from entering. He then pulled out a gun and shot Baucom. Authorities are still searching for the shooter. Baucom is survived by a husband, three kids and three grandkids, according to KHOU. Robin...
The owner of Innovo Kitchen, a restaurant in Latham, New York, blasted U.S. Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand after his restaurant's security video showed her not wearing a mask when entering. John LaPosta, the head chef and owner of Innovo Kitchen, took to Instagram Saturday to post video of the senator walking into his restaurant. “The problem with NY politics in a nut shell,” wrote LaPosta on Instagram. “My Senator blowing past my manager before she can even ask her to put a mask on, walking right past a really big sign that says ‘masks required to enter'. The masks are a mandate from the Governor.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by innovo kitchen (@innovo_kitchen) LaPosta also noted that Gillibrand's example questions the validity of following the current New York mandate. “As good citizens, agree or not, we must follow our leaders,” the restaurant owner added. “Her guest is graciously wearing one. I guess Senator Gillibrand thinks that the Governor is wrong or she is special and above the rules.” Gillibrand...
Tips have improved during the Covid pandemic at Sugapeach Chicken & Fish Fry in North Liberty, Iowa.Courtesy: Chad Simmons At Sugapeach Chicken & Fish Fry, a fast casual eatery in North Liberty, Iowa, customers are feeling a lot more generous since the pandemic put the squeeze on the restaurant industry. Before, people would tip 10% to 15% for meals ordered and collected from the counter, said Chad Simmons, Sugapeach's co-owner. "Now, we get between 20% and 25%." Still, finding enough staff to keep the restaurant running remains a challenge, he said.   As the economy recovers, workers are hesitant to return to service jobs that offer few benefits and low pay, which has led to a severe shortage of fast-food workers, kitchen staff and delivery drivers even as consumers value these services more than ever. More from Personal Finance:Here are the top jobs in the U.S. Inflation gave the average worker a 2.4% pay cutPay hikes of 5% or more may be in store for employees in 2022 "The tips are the icing on the cake, but they really want more...
A Chinese restaurant chain in the north west of England has been forced to make use of robotic waiters, after struggling for staff during the Covid pandemic. Directors at The Chinese Buffet unleashed one BellaBot in each of four restaurants in Liverpool, St Helens, Bolton and Wigan, to serve food to diners.  When the buffet re-opened after the last lockdown, its owners decided to serve food to people at the table, ordered via an app, rather than allow them to serve themselves. This added an extra strain on the already short waiting staff, according to owners Paolo Hu and Peter Wu, who said the BellaBots had already proved popular with diners. The guide price for the friendly-faced robots is $20,000 (£14,500), which is less than the cost of employing a waiter at minimum wage for 40 hours per week.  Quirky footage shows Bella, who features a wide-eyed feline face, sweeping across the restaurant floor dishing out delicacies to delighted customers.  A Chinese restaurant chain in the north west of England has been forced to make use of robotic waiters, after...

BOSTON (CBS) – Restaurants in Boston are preparing for yet another change in how they operate during the COVID pandemic. Starting Saturday, a new set of vaccine requirements go into place in the city. “We’ve had to really rewrite the business model for restaurants since day one of the pandemic and sadly now it continues as we go through yet another turn 22 months in,” said Bob Luz, president and CEO of the Massachusetts Restaurant Association. Starting Saturday, all employees and customers will be required to show proof of vaccination against COVID-19. “It’s like ‘Groundhog Day’ every day if you’re in the restaurant industry,” Luz said. “It’s like I’m Bill Murray hitting the alarm clock and it just plays another round of how to challenge a restaurant.” Chris Coombs, chef and owner of Deuxave restaurant, spent Thursday gearing up for Saturday’s new regulations. “It’s sort of a kick in the ribs,” Coombs said. If the main course throughout the pandemic has been restrictions with a side of supply chain issues, the Massachusetts Restaurant Association feels these new rules will be...

Have you always wanted to try the aged prime steaks at New York City’s oldest steakhouse? Peter Luger soon will be a short flight away from the Bay Area. The iconic restaurant will open its third U.S. restaurant — its first outside New York state — at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas by the end of 2022, the owners announced Monday. “It was critical for us to be able to bring to Las Vegas the same menu, the same ambiance and –most important — the same quality beef that we are known for in New York, and Caesars was aligned with that vision,” Amy Rubenstein, the president of Peter Luger, said in a statement. This will be Peter Luger’s first domestic expansion in 60 years. However, the restaurant expanded with an international location, in Tokyo, in late 2021. Known as NYC’s original steakhouse, with on-site dry-aging of beef, Peter Luger opened in Brooklyn in 1887 and decades later in Great Neck, New York. SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Shorter hours, takeout only, and COVID testing clinics for restaurant industry workers and their families, are all ways restaurants are feeling the impacts of COVID and the surge of cases linked to the omicron variant. As we approach the end of the Biden Administration's first year, there are positive signs of a shift in its approach to fighting the COVID pandemic. Increasingly, the administration has adopted the more balanced approach the left so harshly criticized as lockdowns swept the nation – but that red states, such as Florida, have enthusiastically embraced. After two years of pleas by those of us who advocated this commonsense approach, it's fair to ask why the Biden administration is suddenly embracing it? In a word, the answer is – 'reality.' Biden has grossly underperformed the expectations he set with respect to fighting the virus and Americans noticed.  Reality can be hard to ignore. Biden's oft repeated – and spirited – campaign vow that he would 'shut down the virus' has given way to his concession that, in reality, 'there is no federal solution.' Biden's claim that Donald Trump was personally responsible for 220,000 pandemic deaths and that '[a]nyone who is responsible for that many deaths should not remain President of the United States,' must now face the reality of over...

At Ben’s BBQ & Brew in San Jose, the karaoke fans have already belted out their swan songs. The final briskets and racks of ribs will come out of the smoker Friday — enough for customers right up until midnight New Year’s Eve. Then, in the coming weeks, the sports memorabilia will be removed from the walls. But when I was in college, I had to work and I went and got a job and I worked my way through college because of that. So I think there we have to create the incentives to be able to do so. And without doing that, people are not going to be able to return to jobs that are necessary, such as restaurants and manufacturing and truck driving, etc. We have to be able to focus on these...
With the Omicron variant now spreading fast across California, is it still safe to dine out? Public health officials have stressed they don’t intend to impose any new lockdown restrictions of the kind that were ordered last year, such as closing down indoor restaurant areas. Some cities, such as Los Angeles, West Hollywood, San Francisco and Berkeley, have instead imposed rules requiring customers to show proof of vaccination to eat in indoor dining rooms. Overall, the decision on dining out comes down to a personal assessment of risk — something that could be affected by how old you are, your underlying conditions, local rates of coronavirus transmission and the effect on your family, friends and work should you become infected. Infectious disease experts widely agree that outdoor dining is a much safer bet. Some doctors who haven’t eaten in an indoor restaurant since the pandemic began have eaten outdoors. A giant indoor holiday party with dozens of guests, in a stuffy room, is far more risky. Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said she is discouraging large...

But when she notified her supervisor at the restaurant where she works that she would not be at her next shift — and explained the tragic nature of her situation — the supervisor chastised her for giving such little notice, telling her that her fellow employees would have a particularly hard shift because she was missing. Furious, Hillary told the woman off, quit, and even sent her a photo of her comatose sister's middle finger propped up — before learning from the senior manager days later that the supervisor was no longer employed there.
