Yvette Mimieux was found dead Tuesday morning, a rep for her family confirmed. She had just turned 80 on January 8, and she passed away in her sleep of natural causes. Mimieux was a prolific actress best remembered for starring opposite Rod Taylor in the 1960 George Pal-directed film version of the H.G. Wells novel "The Time Machine" at MGM, where she was soon put under a long-term contract. Another big hit came months after in "Where the Boys Are." Among her other credits around that time were "Platinum High School," "Mr. Lucky," "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" and "Light in the Piazza." The latter garnered her strong reviews for playing a mentally disabled girl, and at the time she said: "I supposed I have a soulful quality. I was often cast as a wounded person, the ‘sensitive’ role." She played Dean Martin’s child bride in the 1963 pic "Toys in the Attic" and teamed with director Serge Bourguignon in the films "The Reward" and "The Picasso Summer." While it is starting to appear that the Omicron COVID-19 wave could be nearing its end, one model projects a grim future ahead for the United States, modeling that 58,000 to 305,000 more Americans will succumb to the virus over the next two months. Projections shared during a White House briefing Tuesday estimate that between up to 305,000 Americans could die from Covid between now and when the wave is expected to subside by mid-March. This likely would bring America's overall Covid death total - sitting at over 853,000 as of Tuesday afternoon - over one million, a mark no other country in the world has reached. The projection comes despite the growing data that the Omicron variant is less severe than its predecessors. Data revealed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week showed that a person infected with Omicron is 91 percent less likely to die than a person who contracted Delta. Dr Rochelle Walensky, director of the CDC, said last week that the Delta variant was even still responsible for the recent uptick in deaths...

THERE'S nothing more annoying than trying to cook two pizzas at the same time, with one ending up burnt and one raw. But what about if you could fit two large pizzas on the same oven shelf? 3Cut two pizzas in half if you want to make them fit on the same oven shelfCredit: tiktok/@diyonabudgetofficial 3The hack means there's no more trying to force the pizzas on the shelfCredit: tiktok/@diyonabudgetofficial One cooking whizz has come up with a brilliant hack to make them fit - and it's all about how you cut them up. "Does anybody else get really annoyed when you try and cook two pizzas on the same shelf in the oven?" the DIY on a Budget account wrote on TikTok. "And don’t tell me to put them on separate shelves, because maybe I want to put chips or more pizza on my other shelf - I’m not giving it up like that." The woman then demonstrated how to make the pizzas fit - cutting them in half and then placing each half on each side...

In the wake of the pandemic, millions are reporting trouble sleeping. For the past three days we’ve shared advice from consultant neurologist and sleep specialist Professor Guy Leschziner. Insomnia is generally not a threat to physical health.  But the same can’t be said of sleep apnoea. In the final part of our series, Professor Leschziner focuses on identifying and managing the condition...  Feeling tired all the time is a common problem — and the list of possible causes is endless: an underactive thyroid gland, diabetes, depression, cancer, shift work, anaemia, carbon monoxide poisoning... the list goes on. One possible — if under-considered — explanation is sleep apnoea. As you sleep, it’s natural for the muscles in the walls of our throat to slacken a little. However, in some people this slackening causes the airway to collapse and obstruct, leading you to snore loudly, repeatedly stop breathing, and then gasp awake or almost awake many times a night. You will probably not realise you’re doing it — although your partner might — and the danger is that these multiple little awakenings...

(CNN)The Dallas Cowboys' 2021 season couldn't have ended in a more heartbreaking manner for fans, and they wasted no time in expressing that frustration. Shortly after the Cowboys' 23-17 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday in the NFC Wild Card game, video captured fans throwing trash at players and referees as they ran off the AT&T Stadium field. Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence could be seen batting away an object that was about to hit him, although he later told reporters that it was aimed at the officials. When star quarterback Dak Prescott was asked about the fans' actions, he initially expressed his disappointment thinking that they were directing their anger at the players. But when he was informed the trash was aimed at the referees, Prescott's message changed: "Credit to them." The Biden Administration says it will start sending out at-home covid tests from a new government web site on Wednesday – but with a delivery window that could last longer than a typical case of covid. The administration has contracted for more than 420 million home tests kits, a senior administration official told reporters on a press call Friday. The tests will be free to the American public, with each household able to order up to four of them.   But with current wait times, it will take between 7 and 12 days for shipment within the continental, the official said. The U.S. Postal Service will be providing first class package delivery. 'We anticipate that that window will shorten as we get further along in this program,' said the official. Alaska, Hawaii, and U.S. territories may have to wait longer for 'priority mail' delivery.' Those wait times may prove longer than some Americans are used to. A quick online search Friday revealed that Amazon.com could deliver a lawnmower by Monday, a holiday. Even in-demand at-home covid tests were available for delivery...

10 thoughts after the Chicago Bears lost for the ninth time in their last 12 games, finishing the 2021 season at 6-11 with a 31-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium. 1. This was the Bears’ first losing season since 2017, and the two NFC North rivals appear to be in similar positions. It’s expected the Bears will fire coach Matt Nagy after four seasons, one division title, two postseason appearances, no playoff wins, one Coach of the Year award and a 34-33 record (including postseason). Vikings coach Mike Zimmer, a Lockport High School alumnus, also could be at the end of the line after an eight-year run that includes a 74-59-1 record and three postseason appearances. Ultimately, neither coach has been able to solve the Green Bay Packers with any regularity. The Bears played hard for Nagy down the stretch. They had a 14-0 lead in this game before the Vikings dominated the second half. The offense was 5 of 15 on third down and 1 of 6 on fourth down, and that...
The Duchess of Cambridge’s 40th birthday portraits are a departure from her usual official images. For many years in the Kate-sphere, the emphasis has always been on the family, the down-home, the sporty and the wholesome. Who could forget the charming Christmas cards with William and the children, everyone in those darling heritage woollies, doubtlessly picked out by her own impeccably tasteful hand? Elsewhere there has been toasting marshmallows on the beach at Holkham, smiling in country casuals on the cover of Vogue and even perching on a farm gate in a pair of jeans to mark her 38th birthday. The images, taken by glossy magazine favourite Paolo Roversi, pay homage to the classic royal portraiture of yesteryear without being mere pastiche Modesty has always been Kate’s watchword and ever-so-humble her signature style. If anything, she is a spotlight shirker, preferring to be seen in a supportive role at her husband’s side.  In the royal hen house, she never wanted to be the golden egg, sizzling amid the omelette of attention. She’s just not that kind of chick. However, these...

Though shocked to learn of her ex-husband's criminal behavior, Melanie later came to believe that James was, in fact, capable of the heinous act. "He was a pretty selfish person ... He could be controlling and intimidating... it could be challenging," she said. "It just seemed like something he would do to fix a problem." Melanie reportedly maintained that she didn't suspect that James was having an affair and thought he was dedicated to their family. But a few weeks after his arrest, she filed for divorce. And that's when she started examining their marriage and realizing some of the inconsistencies. "He seemed the same all the time," she recalled. But she noted: "He would get off work at 3 [p.m.] ... and usually he would get home at 5 and I would say, 'Why are you always so late?' ... and that would be an argument. He didn't want to tell me anything." Sometimes, Melanie added, her ex-husband would go off on trips supposedly with colleagues or friends. Let me start 2022 by heading back — way, way back — for a moment. It’s easy to forget just how long this world has been a dangerous place for human beings. I thought about this recently when I stumbled upon a little memoir my Aunt Hilda scrawled, decades ago, in a small notebook. In it, she commented in passing: “I was graduated during that horrible flu epidemic of 1919 and got it.” Badly enough, it turned out, to mess up her entry into high school. She says little more about it. Still, I was shocked. In all the years when my father and his sister were alive and, from time to time, talked about the past, never had they (or my mother, for that matter) mentioned the disastrous “Spanish Flu” pandemic of 1918-1920. I hadn’t the slightest idea that anyone in my family had been affected by it. In fact, until I read John Barry’s 2005 book, The Great Influenza, I hadn’t even known that a pandemic devastated America (and the rest of the world) early in the last...

As Kevin Porter Jr. drained a buzzer-beater Wednesday night, leading the Houston Rockets to victory, a Washington Wizards announcer made an absolutely terrible comment that we can only hope was a mistake. “You’ve got to give credit. Kevin Porter Jr., like his dad, pulled that trigger right at the right time,” Wizards analyst Glenn Consor said on the NBC Sports Washington game broadcast. Kevin Porter Sr. spent four years in prison after he was charged with first-degree murder for shooting a 14-year-old girl. Porter Sr. was 19 at the time and claimed the gun was accidentally discharged. After Porter Sr. was released from prison, he was later shot five times and killed during a bar fight in 2004. Consor’s reference was either an example of horrific judgement and awareness or a case of mistaken identity. The broadcaster may have assumed Kevin Porter Jr. was the son of former NBA point guard Kevin Porter, who played professionally from 1972-1983 including a stint in Washington. Kevin Porter Sr. did not play in the NBA. Consor’s “trigger” reference understandably drew a furious rash...

On a June morning in 1993, Richard Leakey, the then controversial head of the Kenya Wildlife Service , crashed his single-engined Cessna 206 into a cattle field in the bush.  His four passengers were relatively unhurt but Leakey was seriously injured.  The aircraft’s engine had been thrust back by the impact, snapping both his legs like twigs and driving the African soil into his open wounds.  Leakey remained conscious and with typical brio was able to direct the gathering villagers to call for help.  I was in Kenya visiting Leakey that week, in my capacity as a journalist covering East African wildlife issues, and he’d invited me to fly with him to visit a national park.  Fortunately for me, I became tied up in the capital Nairobi, and in the following years we often joked about my lucky escape.  It came to mind again yesterday when I read the news that Leakey had died at the age of 77.  Renowned anthropologist Richard Erskine Leake, pictured during the the 1970s, has died at the age of 77 But what a life...
(CNN)On Sunday, Twitter confirmed it had permanently suspended the personal account of Republican Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for violating the company's policy against sharing misinformation about Covid-19.She'll still have access to her Congressional account.Twitter said Greene's tweet claiming there had been an "extremely high amount of Covid vaccine deaths" earned her a fifth "strike," which resulted in permanent loss of her account. She had previously tweeted claims that vaccines were "failing," when experts say they have saved millions of lives, and that Covid-19 wasn't dangerous; in fact, it's potentially deadly. Kara Alaimo The decision to permanently suspend the account was the right call for Twitter, and applying it more broadly would be an astonishingly simple and effective way of helping to curb the spread of deadly disinformation. Now, it's time for other social networks to follow suit.In the United States, the number of Covid cases just hit a record high. With everyone from medical professionals to firefighters, train operators and airline personnel getting sick en masse, the continued operation of essential services is now in jeopardy in some...
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) responded to critics Monday, including potential Democrat gubernatorial challenger Nikki Fried (D), who accused him of being absent when, in reality, he was attending his wife’s cancer treatments during the holiday break. “I guess I should have been at the beach in Delaware. They would have been really happy about that,” he quipped, referencing President Biden’s beach vacation. DeSantis noted that they put out a schedule as well, but his critics assume the governor is not doing anything if he is not holding a big press conference. On Wednesday, when there was nothing on the calendar, DeSantis said he caught word that he was apparently on vacation. “And I just looked at my wife. I’m like, going to the hospital with you is not a vacation for you, I know that. And it’s not a vacation; this is something that as a husband, I think that I should be doing,” he said: I have accompanied her to all her chemotherapy treatments, and she’s there for a long time. I’m there most of the time. It’s...

The Pentagon is building a second secret courtroom at Guantanamo Bay to hold trials for suspected terrorists at the same time, as calls have grown for President Biden to shut down the controversial prison.  The new courtroom will exclude the public from the chamber, and permit two military judges to hold proceedings at the same time starting in 2023, according to the New York Times. Smaller cases would be held in the new chamber, which will cost $4 million to build, while Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and the four other men accused of plotting the 9/11 attacks would be tried in the existing chamber, with a gallery for the public.  The Guantanamo Bay prison has become more and more secretive over its 20 years of operation, even as it costs taxpayers millions of dollars per year.  The Biden administration had signaled it aims to close the military prison in Cuba before leaving office, reviving an Obama-era promise.  Congress stood in the way of Obama's effort by forbidding any detainee from stepping foot on the US mainland.    Guantanamo has reportedly cost U.S....
The attack on the U.S. Capitol was incited by former President Donald Trump after he lost the 2020 election and refused to accept his defeat. Trump spread disinformation about the validity of mail-in ballots for months before his loss and fomented unrest with unceasing rhetoric on election fraud for roughly the same time. The committee tasked to investigate the Jan. 6 attack will soon hold public hearings and piece together not only what happened that day but how it was prepared for, coordinated, supported, and financed. The primary aim of the committee is to scrutinize this information so that it can recommend or draft legislation that would prevent a rogue president from attempting to subvert an election ever again. Amendments or revisions to the Electoral Count Act of 1887 are of paramount consideration. It has been argued by a variety of legal scholars—and analysts of all political persuasions—that the 19th-century law is overly ambiguous. It was precisely that law’s ambiguity that anchored a strategy penned by Trump’s adviser, John Eastman, to overturn the 2020 election results. Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson has...

A Nebraska woman who was born with a double uterus was shocked to discover that she was pregnant in both of them at the same time — but the pregnancy would not go smoothly, and she went into early labor at just 22.5 weeks gestation.  Megan Phipps, 24, was born with uterine didelphys, a rare condition in which a woman has two uteruses, and sometimes even a cervix for each. The condition hadn't been an issue in her previous two pregnancies, which happened on her right side — but earlier this year, she discovered that she was pregnant with twins, one is each uterus. One of the babies passed away soon after, but the other, baby Reece, is now the youngest baby born at Bryan Health in Lincoln to survive. Megan Phipps, 24, welcomed baby Reece at 22.5 weeks gestation, making her the youngest baby to ever be born at her Nebraska hospital Her story is even more unique because...
Texas lawyer Sarah Weddington, who successfully argued the landmark abortion rights case Roe v. Wade, died Sunday at the age of 76. Weddington was just 26 years old when she brought a class-action lawsuit challenging Texas’s ban on abortions all the way to the Supreme Court. The court’s 1973 ruling set a precedent legalizing abortion nationwide that stands to this day. In 2012, Sarah Weddington spoke with KPBS Public Television about her long legal career. Sarah Weddington: “You look back as I was growing up, and there were so many limits on what women could do. Women couldn’t even run full court in basketball. We got half court and two dribbles. We didn’t get credit unless our fathers or our husbands signed for us. Now most people get a credit card offer every week. We didn’t get to make decisions about our own reproductive. We didn’t get to go to law school. I was in the first group of women who went to law school. We didn’t get equal pay. And so, what we’ve been doing all these years is...
