It’s always good to see an old friend. A fish that was thought to be extinct in the state of Ohio was recently discovered in one of the Buckeye State’s rivers. This particular species hasn’t been seen in the area for over 80 years.  The Ohio Division of Wildlife announced that two longhead darters had been caught in the Ohio River last fall. This species was last spotted in Ohio in 1939. Since then, the species was considered extirpated from the state. NEW HAMPSHIRE ANGLER CATCHES STATE RECORD FISH AT SPOT WHERE HE ONCE FISHED WITH LATE FRIEND The longhead darter was thought to be extirpated in the state of Ohio. (Ohio Division of Wildlife) The recent discovery, however, suggests that there is still a population of longhead darters in the state, even if it is very small. It’s unclear if the species has returned to the area or if a small population was able to go unnoticed for the last several decades. The Ohio DOW posted about the find on Facebook, writing, "Why are we so excited? This...
WASHINGTON (AP) — Fewer Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week following three straight increases economists blamed on the surge in cases of the omicron variant of COVID-19. Jobless claims fell by 30,000 to 260,000 last week, the Labor Department reported Thursday, less than the 265,000 analysts were expecting. The four-week average of claims, which compensates for weekly volatility, rose by 15,000 to 247,000. Altogether, nearly 1.7 million people were collecting jobless aid the week that ended Jan. 15, a nominal increase of 51,000 from the previous week. A recent surge in COVID-19 cases has set back what had been a strong comeback from last year’s short but devastating coronavirus recession. Jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, had fallen mostly steadily for about a year and late last year dipped below the pre-pandemic average of around 220,000 a week. Economists expect claims to return to those lower levels as the virus fades. Copyright © 2022 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. The leg higher comes amid growing geopolitical tensions between Russia and Ukraine, and as supply remains tight amid a rebound in demand. The contract added more than 2%, hitting $90.07. West Texas Intermediate crude futures, the U.S. oil benchmark, also advanced more than 2% to $87.43 per barrel. CIBC Private Wealth's Rebecca Babin said the catalyst for higher crude prices is potential sanctions on Russia, which would be triggered by a Ukraine invasion. "[E]ach day that passes without a de-escalation, we could see more of a supporting bid to crude," she said. Goldman Sachs said Wednesday that the firm's base case is that supply disruptions are unlikely to occur, but that there could be upside for energy prices given an already tight market. As the Chicago Bears continue their methodical process vetting candidates simultaneously for their general manager and head coach openings, action should pick up soon. ESPN reported Saturday morning that Kansas City Chiefs executive director of player personnel Ryan Poles, a GM candidate, will get a second interview. It already was reported Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus will receive a second interview for head coach, something he already completed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The first of four GM openings leaguewide was filled Friday when the New York Giants hired Buffalo Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen, who also interviewed with the Bears. Eight teams — one-fourth of the league — remain in the hunt for a head coach. Once the first domino falls in the coaching search, other teams could begin acting quickly. The Bears are proceeding at their own pace with hired gun Bill Polian leading the search, and they’ve been linked to nearly 30 combined GM and coaching candidates, something that has raised eyebrows around the league. “There aren’t eight head coaches in the group...
Jen Cousins, center, with her husband, Matt and their children Noel, 13, Saffron, 12, Milo, 8 and Poppy, 6.Jen Cousins Without a January child tax credit payment, Jen Cousins will have to wait a few extra months to replace the brakes on her minivan, the only car her family of six owns. Cousins, 44, a stay-at-home mom in Orlando, Florida, has been receiving the full credit for each of her four children ages six, eight, twelve and thirteen for the past six months. She's put most of the extra money toward medical expenses – the entire family wears glasses, one child needs special prescription eye drops and speech therapy and soon, her oldest kids will need braces. Her husband, Matt, 43, works as a software architect and has insurance through work, but it only covers him, so the family pays almost $1,000 each month to insure Jen and the kids, she said. The Queen has arrived in Norfolk after making a special pilgrimage ahead of the 70th anniversary of her father's death as she stays in Prince Philips's beloved Wood Farm cottage for the first time without him. The monarch, 95, usually spends the festive period at Sandringham, but has remained at Windsor Castle since the autumn as a Covid precaution and held muted Christmas celebrations with close family last month. In preparation for the anniversary of her father George VI in 1952, though, the Queen has made a special trip by helicopter followed by a short drive by car to Norfolk. A source told the Mail on Sunday: 'Everything is being put in order for the Queen's visit. 'We've been told that she will stay at Wood Farm, rather than the main house, which is nice as that always had a special place in his heart.' The Queen has stayed in the cottage before, but it will be the first time since Philip died in April last year.  She last visited the estate in early November and would normally have spent the weekend...
Qantas has lost its title as the world's safest airline for the first time since 2013 due to Covid pilot losses and a 'serious incident'.  Australia's flagship airline had a sharp drop in Airline Ratings' annual safest airline list down to seventh place, and was replaced at the top by Air New Zealand. Qantas was ranked the world's safest airline from 2014 to 2017 and 2019 to 2021, and no clear winner could be found in 2018.  Air New Zealand (plane pictured on ground) has overtaken Qantas (plane pictured taking off) as the world's safest airline in the rankings of the Airline Ratings website Air New Zealand was followed by two Middle Eastern airlines, Etihad and Qatar.  Virgin Australia/Virgin Atlantic is ranked number 10.  Airline Ratings looks at 385 carriers across world, measuring factors including the airlines' crash and serious incident records, the age of their aircraft, and Covid-19 protocols. Long after most families have taken their decorations down, the Christmas tree lights still twinkle at Sandringham. Inside the house, great fir trees are covered with traditional baubles of glittering red and gold.  In the dining room stands a rare modernising touch, a gloriously unstuffy artificial silver tree with strands of tinsel hanging down. Thanks to the Queen's stipulations, the decorations are kept up until February 6. Some will say that it's bad luck – and the Queen has certainly had more than her fair share of that. Yet those closest to the monarch know the decorations are a quiet tribute to her beloved father, whose early death on February 6, 1952, catapulted her to the Throne at the age of 25. The Mail on Sunday has learned that in preparation for the anniversary of her father's death, and her accession to the Throne, the Queen will make a special pilgrimage to Sandringham in the coming days. 'Everything is being put in order for the Queen's visit,' one said. Toxic nanoplastics have been discovered on both tips of the globe for the first time, scientists revealed.  Researchers from the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands found the harmful plastics — including tyre particles — have been polluting Greenland for as long as 50 years. And they also found the particles in as remote a region as Antartica, suggesting they are a 'bigger pollution problem than we thought'.  Nanoplastics are smaller and more poisonous than microplastics, which have been found all over the world. Their full impact of both on human health is not yet known.  Experts fear they could pose a major problem to humans and other animals, with the amount of plastic in the ocean expected to triple by 2040.  The Environmental Investigation Agency earlier this week announced the world's plastic pollution threat constitutes a 'planetary emergency' equal to climate change. An 'extremely rare' portrait of Charles Dickens donning a 'glorious' moustache has gone on show for the first time ever, but the bold look has received mixed reviews. The Oliver Twist author was known for his trademark beard, but the daguerreotype profile portrait shows his handlebar-style moustache, which he only sported for a few years. The portrait was made in around 1852-55, when he was writing Bleak House and Hard Times, but has been in a private collection for 20 years. It was rediscovered in the collection of an Irish photography enthusiast Charles Cloney. It has been since donated to the Charles Dickens Museum in London, where it has been put on display for the first time and will be on show until March 31, The Guardian reported.  An 'extremely rare' portrait of Charles Dickens donning a 'glorious' moustache has gone on show for the first time ever, but the bold look has received mixed reviews But the author's unique facial hair has received mixed reviews, with British Library curator Andrea Lloyd claiming that Dickens's friend John Forster described the moustache as a 'hideous...

Women have assumed leadership positions throughout the Navy, so it was only fitting that a woman for the first time Friday took command of the U.S.S. The outgoing Finance Minister and new German Chancellor Minister Olaf Scholz delivers a speech during the handing-over ceremony with his successor in the German Federal Ministry of Finances in Berlin, Germany, December 9, 2021.Tobias Schwarz | Reuters Borrowing costs for the German government continued their push higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark 10-year bund yield trading in positive territory for the first time in nearly three years. May 2019 was the last time that German 10-year yields were above zero, when accommodative policy from the European Central Bank pressured interest rates lower. Negative yields meant that investors were effectively paying the German government to lend it money. The ECB is currently behind on its normalization path, compared to the Federal Reserve and the Bank of England, but surging inflation and wider moves in the global bond market have now helped to push yields above zero. Euro zone inflation hit a new record high in December, raising more questions about the ECB's monetary policy. And while the water had been clear when the pipe was put in it, it was a dark brown colour "just after 10 minutes", Rachael added. Facebook fans were quick to comment on the post, which attracted an impressive 1,000...
SHOCK Drive Genesect is appearing in Pokemon Go for the first time ever this week. The pokemon is a Tier Five Raid boss and if you manage to catch it over the coming week, it'll know the attack Techno Blast. 1Pokemon Go Tier Five Raids are best tackled in a group (image credit: Mika Baumeister on Unsplash) Genesect drives in Pokemon Go explained Genesect is a man-made pokemon that has a drive slot in the Pokemon lore, and holding different drives allows it to change the type of its Techno Blast move. The light on its cannon denotes which drive it's holding, and the associated Techno Blast attack: Normal (orange): Normal-type move Burn Drive (red): Fire-type move Shock Drive (yellow): Electric-type move Chill Drive (white): Ice-type move Douse Drive (blue): Water-type move Pokemon Go treats the above as individual pokemon, rather than allowing you to switch drives like in the series' other games. So you'll need to catch each one if you want a Genesect with every type of Techno Blast attack. When is Shock Drive Genesect...

President Joe Biden will give a formal press conference next week, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Friday – as the president starts the year with low poll numbers and faces defeat of two key agenda items.  Wednesday will mark 78 days since his last formal press conference  – a period that has seen Biden's approval rating slide, amid the spread of the omicron variant, the failure to pass his Build Back Better plan, and his so far unsuccessful effort to move voting rights legislation. As of Friday, Biden had gone 73 days without such an event. Biden will face the press on Jan. 19, the anniversary of former President Donald Trump's last full day in office.  White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki, who has been fending off questions from reporters for weeks about when Biden would hold such an event, mentioned it at the top of her briefing Friday. President Joe Biden is scheduled to hold a formal press conference Wednesday. He has taken questions at less formal events, as he did at the Capitol Thursday, often fielding...
ASTRONOMERS witnessed the 'violent death' of a red supergiant star for the first time, a new study says. Scientists also observed the star's final days before its massive explosion turned it into a supernova, according to the findings, which were published in the Astrophysical Journal on January 6. 2This original artwork depicts a red supergiant star as it's about to explodeCredit: W.M. Keck Observatory/Adam Makarenko The star was first discovered by researchers from Northwestern University and the University of California, Berkeley, in summer 2020. The team used the University of Hawaii’s Pan-STARRS telescope which is perched atop Haleakalā Observatory in Maui to observe the star, which data concluded was ten times more massive than our Sun. However, much to their surprise, researchers discovered a few months later that the automated telescope had actually captured the star's death. The observations also revealed a lot of dense circumstellar material floating around the star during the explosion. "The death of a massive star like this, it's very dramatic and very violent. We've never really seen anything like this," Wynn Jacobson-Galán, an astrophysicist at UC Berkeley and lead author...
THE UK's daily Covid cases have fallen below 100,000 for the first time in three weeks. Infections have dipped to 99,652 today, in a promising sign the country is moving past the Omicron peak. 1The UK is back below 100,000 daily cases for the first time in weeksCredit: LNP The last time figures were below 100,000 was Christmas Day, but this was likely due to people not being tested. But December 19 saw 81,761 new cases in 24 hours, before it began to steadily increase over the next two weeks. For the past seven days, infections have fallen hugely from record highs of over 200,000-per-day in an encouraging sign. It follows the release of Sage documents today, which revealed fresh data showed Omicron is 65 per cent less likely to cause death compared to Delta. Patients in hospital with the variant have also been found to have shorter stays, and are less likely to need oxygen or intensive care. Yesterday an expert hailed the UK is "on the other side" of the Omicron peak. Most read in Health NewsHIGH ALERT...
By Todd Woody | Bloomberg Endangered Coho salmon are returning to Marin County, California, creeks this winter where they’ve long been absent, thanks to intense rains that scientists say will become more frequent as the state swings between climate-driven drought and deluge. It’s a rare bit of good news for a species whose population has plummeted in recent decades due to development and pollution. In the San Francisco Bay Area, thousands of salmon historically made the annual migration from the Pacific Ocean to the redwood-shrouded creeks in Marin County where they were born. There they would spawn the next generation of fish before dying. In recent years that population has dwindled to just a few hundred salmon and the future looked dire as California’s record-breaking drought dried out streams. But an atmospheric river that inundated the Bay Area in October followed by heavy rains in December filled creeks in the largely rural county, allowing salmon to navigate culverts and other obstacles to reach creeks that had previously been impassable. First-time sightings of Chinook salmon in creeks have also been reported. “Salmon have...
Astronomers have captured the death of a red supergiant star for the first time.  The real-time discovery was published Jan. 6 in Astrophysical Journal and led by researchers at Northwestern University and the University of California, Berkeley.  JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE IS FULLY DEPLOYED According to a press release from Northwestern, the team observed the red supergiant during the last 130 days before it collapsed into a Type II supernova.  Previous observations showed that red supergiants were relatively inactive before their deaths, without any evidence of violent eruptions or luminous emissions.  These researchers, however, detected bright radiation from a red supergiant in the final year before exploding.  "This is a breakthrough in our understanding of what massive stars do moments before they die," Wynn Jacobson-Galán, the study’s lead author, said in a statement. "Direct detection of pre-supernova activity in a red supergiant star has never been observed before in an ordinary type II supernova. For the first time, we watched a red supergiant star explode." The work – which was conducted at Northwestern before Jacobson-Galán moved to UC Berkeley – suggests...

Donald Trump's former campaign manager has said he was pressured to lie about the then-president by special counsel Robert Mueller's investigative team. Paul Manafort, 72, spoke on Wednesday night to Fox News' Sean Hannity for the first time since being pardoned by Trump more than a year ago. Manafort was charged in 2017 with conspiracy against the United States, making false statements, money laundering and failing to register as a foreign agent for Ukraine. Manafort - a globetrotting lobbyist famed for representing dubious characters such as Congolese President Mobutu Sese Seko, Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines, and Nigerian coup leader Sani Abacha - was the figurehead for accusations that Russian President Vladimir Putin helped elect Trump.  Manafort was accused of working with Russia to help Trump win the election - something which was never proved, and he has always denied. In August 2018, he was found guilty of filing false income tax returns, failing to report his foreign accounts, and bank fraud, and he spent a little of a year in prison before being released to house arrest in May 2020,...
Derek Carr has been praying about leading the Raiders in the playoffs since he was drafted in 2014, and those prayers seemed to be answered in 2016 when his team steamrolled to a 12-3 record the first 16 weeks of that playoff-clinching season. The problem for Carr was that in the fourth quarter of that fateful 15th game, a win over the Indianapolis Colts, he fractured his right fibula. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM So while his team did indeed continue on to the postseason, Carr could not play. And, not surprisingly, the Raiders lost to Houston in the Wild Card Round. The team that had waited since 2002 to get in the playoffs exited immediately, mostly because the starting quarterback was a spectator rather than a participant. The Academy Awards will have a host in 2022 for the first time in three years, but there’s still no word on who it will be. In 2019, a controversy surrounding Kevin Hart led to the decision by ABC to move forward with the award show without a host for the first time in recent memory. Audiences seemingly responded positively to the change given the ratings that the Oscars got that year, so the network decided to keep with that format, until now.  Speaking at the Television Critics Association virtual press tour, Hulu Originals & ABC Entertainment President Craig Erwich revealed that the network is currently on the hunt for a pop culture savvy host to helm the show for the first time since Jimmy Kimmel did the job for the 2017 and 2018 seasons.  BILLY CRYSTAL SAYS THE OSCARS NEEDS A HOST AFTER 2021 AWARDS HIT RECORD-LOW RATINGS The Oscars will have a host  for the first time in three years. Local media have reported that the court has ruled that for the first time in the history of Saudi Arabia, a person who was sexually harassed should be humiliated. A criminal court in Medina has convicted Yasser Laroui of harassing a woman with obscene language. He was sentenced to eight months in prison and fined $ 1,330. The Prevention of Torture Act was amended a year ago to allow the names of perpetrators and penalties against them to be published in local newspapers at their own expense. It was left to the judges to determine whether the “severity of the crime and its impact on society” justified the action. The amendment was welcomed by many in the Conservative Gulf Kingdom at the time, with one commentator calling it a “long overdue” amendment. The law, which came into force in 2018, carries a maximum...
"Winter weather across the country and the recent surge of COVID-19 cases are compounding the already-dire situation facing the blood supply," Baia Lasky, medical director for the Red Cross, told The Hill in a statement. "Please, if you are eligible, make an appointment to give blood or platelets in the days and weeks ahead to ensure no patient is forced to wait for critical care." According to a previous report from the New York Times, the U.S. faced a critical shortage in March 2020 following the first wave of COVID-19 in the country. “This is the biggest challenge that I’ve seen in my 30 years in the business,” Chris Hrouda, president of biomedical services at the American Red Cross, told the Times in a December statement on the worsening shortage. “We simply like to keep three days of inventory,” he added. “We’re struggling to keep one day.”
