Here’s the latest installment of our Miami Dolphins Q&A, where South Florida Sun Sentinel writers David Furones and Omar Kelly answer questions from readers. Q: With the 25th pick of Round 1 … u select whom…? — Bob Witmer on Twitter A: First, let’s clarify that the Dolphins’ place in the first round isn’t set in stone yet. With the Dolphins owning the San Francisco 49ers’ selection, Miami will select, at best, No. 25, but it could more likely be 26th or fall even further back. If you go chalk in the divisional round, with the 49ers and Cincinnati Bengals losing at the respective top-seeded Green Bay Packers and Tennessee Titans, it’s 26. If San Francisco loses and Cincinnati wins, it’s 25. If the 49ers advance to the NFC Championship Game, it will drop into the final four selections of the opening round. Essentially, we’re looking at what the Dolphins’ top possibilities will be late in the first round. Miami also now seems more likely to keep this pick with the team essentially ruling out a...

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Ash Barty was front and center when the Australian Open celebrated its inaugural First Nations Day. Albeit not for very long. The top-ranked Barty has Indigenous heritage and her second-round match at Melbourne Park’s main stadium on Wednesday was among the features of a program dedicated to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of Australia. She was on and off the court quickly, beating 142nd-ranked qualifier Lucia Bronzetti 6-1, 6-1 in 52 minutes. “Really cool. … Nice for me to be a part of it in a way I feel most comfortable,” Barty said. “On a day when we’re bringing culture together … it was really nice for me to go out and enjoy that. “I was really fortunate to be able to play today.” Barty extended her streak of service holds to 48 games and moved into the third round at Melbourne Park for the sixth consecutive year. The 2021 Wimbledon and 2019 French Open champion dropped just one game in her first-round match, which also took less than an hour, as she bids...
Nearly 17 years after the 49ers bypassed local Cal Bears star Aaron Rodgers to select University of Utah quarterback Alex Smith with the first overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, Rodgers has yet another chance to make San Francisco regret its decision. The 10-time Pro Bowler, three-time MVP and 2010 Super Bowl champion has accomplished nearly everything an NFL player can dream of, but his illustrious résumé still lacks one coveted bullet point. Rodgers has never beaten the 49ers in the playoffs. Saturday’s NFC Divisional round matchup between the Packers and 49ers marks the fourth postseason meeting between the franchises since the notorious 2005 NFL Draft. While Rodgers has found plenty of success in Green Bay, the 2021 MVP favorite would love to avenge playoff defeats from the 2012, 2013 and 2019 seasons and remind the 49ers at least one more time that they made the wrong choice. How strong are Rodgers’ chances? The top-seeded Packers are 5.5-point favorites over the sixth-seeded 49ers and well-rested following a Wild Card Weekend bye, but there’s still...
Emma Raducanu shone at a grand slam again as she marked her Australian Open debut with victory in the battle of the US Open champions against Sloane Stephens. The 19-year-old has found wins hard to come by and has faced criticism since her extraordinary success in New York in September but, back on the big stage, Raducanu came up with the right formula again to claim a 6-0 2-6 6-1 victory. She lost just four points in a startling first set that admittedly was woeful from Stephens before the American hit her stride in the second. That set up a first ever decider at this level for Raducanu, and she could not have handled it any better, keeping her cool and striking the ball with confidence to clinch victory after an hour and 45 minutes. ANDY MURRAY secured his first win at the Australian Open for FIVE years - and he did it in typical fashion after a five-set, four-hour epic. The former world No1 battled past 21st seed Nikoloz Basilshvili to progress into round two in an utterly draining contest. 4Andy Murray beat Nikoloz Basilashvili to move into round two at the Australian OpenCredit: EPA It took nearly four hours on court but the Brit eventually prevailed 6-1 3-6 6-4 6-7 6-4 and will face Japan's Taro Daniel next. Murray's previous win at the opening Grand Slam of the year was way back in 2017. Then top seed and the best player in the world, Murray beat American Sam Querrey in straight sets in round three before a shock exit to unseeded German Mischa Zverev, older brother of Alexander. But three years on from an apparent retirement at this tournament - where he is a five-time runner-up - he showed a bit of everything we have got used to across his heroic career. There was pure class, there was angry frustration but...

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. The Giants interviewed nine men for the job that opened a week ago Monday when Dave Gettleman retired after four losing seasons. The other men interviewed were Joe Hortiz, Ravens director of player personnel; Monti Ossenfort, Titans director of player personnel; Ryan Cowden, Tennessee’s vice president of player personnel; Ryan Poles, Chiefs executive director of player personnel; Quentin Harris, Cardinals vice president of player personnel; Adrian Wilson, Arizona’s vice president of pro personnel Joe Schoen; Bills assistant general manager. By JOSH DUBOW The Las Vegas Raiders have fired general manager Mike Mayock after three seasons and will begin a search for a coach and GM following their second playoff berth in the past 19 seasons. The Raiders announced the move to get rid of Mayock on Monday, two days after losing their wild-card playoff game to Cincinnati 26-19. “We thank Mike for his contributions over the last three years in helping to form the foundation for the franchise to build upon in its future,” the team said in a statement. The Raiders have already made a request to interview Patriots director of player personnel Dave Ziegler for the general manager job, as well as Patriots assistant Jerod Mayo for head coach, according to a person familiar with the request. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team didn’t make the requests public. Coach Jon Gruden brought Mayock in to replace Reggie McKenzie following the 2018 season, but the Raiders had spotty results in the draft and free agency in recent years. ...
Getty Mike Mayock with Rich Bisaccia. The Las Vegas Raiders began putting in interview requests for general managers on Monday, which was odd considering they had not announced a decision on Mike Mayock. Turns out, the team already knew that his fate was sealed. The Raiders announced that Mayock will no longer be the general manager. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the decision was made “several days ago,” which would suggest that owner Mark Davis decided to move on before the playoff game against the Cincinnati Bengals was played. Getty Michigan's David Ojabo poses after a big play against Penn State in 2021. The Detroit Lions have multiple different ways they can look to attack the offseason, and most figure the team needs to add playmakers both on offense and defense in order to supplement their roster and turn things around firmly for the future. As a result, most mock drafts have the Lions balancing out their needs and adding a defender and then a wideout later on in the first round. If not a wideout, many see the team looking at the quarterback position for an upgrade. Rarely if ever are the Lions seen as a team that could look to target back-to-back defenders. After two dominant showings in the Wild Card round, the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs are primed for this NFL season’s best game yet. On Saturday, the Buffalo Bills played a perfect football game. The Kansas City Chiefs damn near matched it. Now, the two meet for the third time in two years, this time at Arrowhead Stadium. At stake? A return trip to the AFC Championship Game. For football fans, this game is why you watch the sport. The weather forecast is for a clear, 31-degree night with little wind. Both teams enter very healthy, with the only notable absence being Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White, lost on Thanksgiving to a torn ACL. In Buffalo, the story this weekend was Josh Allen. Allen, who compiled an astounding 98.5 QBR in Saturday’s 47-17 exorcism against the New England Patriots, threw for 308 yards and five touchdowns on 12.3 yards per attempt. It was his finest moment in a young career dotted with many, lifting the Bills to a playoff win and a rematch with Kansas City. Only 24 hours later,...
(CNN)Reigning Australian Open women's champion Naomi Osaka said she's been keeping a journal to document how she's been feeling before defending her title. The 25-year-old couldn't have hoped for a better script for any potential entry she pens for January 17 as she won her opening match 6-3 6-3 against Colombian Camila Osorio on Rod Laver Arena.Osaka, who is the 13th seed in this year's draw, raced into a 5-0 lead in the opening set on Monday before some spirited play from 20-year-old Osorio and a few unforced errors allowed her a route into the match. The Japanese star did eventually manage to clinch the first set. In the second set, Osorio had two early break points but was unable to take advantage. Osaka broke into a 3-1 lead and a stray Osorio backhand into the net finally gave Osaka the victory to get her title defense off to the perfect start. Nakobe Dean, Georgia Bulldogs. (Photo by Todd Kirkland/Getty Images) The Dallas Cowboys tried to come back but largely laid an egg against the 49ers in the playoffs. Here’s how they can rebuild in this 2022 NFL mock draft. In typical Dallas Cowboys fashion, the team fell flat in their first playoff game this season against the 49ers, falling behind early at home. As they often due, they tried to storm back but, in the end, added to the lists of postseason follies since 1995 with a quarterback draw that ultimately ended the final possession with no shot at getting the winning touchdown. For many, the answer to fixing the Cowboys’ woes would probably be to either A. fire Mike McCarthy and find a new head coach who won’t routinely mismanage the game, or B. hope that Jerry Jones gets tired and sells the team. The latter isn’t happening and who knows about the former. So the most plausible answer is to try and find answers in the offseason to help shore up the already impressive roster even more. That’s the...
The Miami Dolphins didn’t play a wild-card round playoff game, but they still found a way to lose over the weekend. The Dolphins’ first-round draft pick took another blow with the San Francisco 49ers’ upset win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday evening. Now, Miami will be selecting No. 25, at best, in the draft’s first round after the 49ers advanced to the divisional round of the postseason. San Francisco now plays at the NFC’s top-seeded Green Bay Packers. With another upset, the pick that goes to the Dolphins falls to 29. A 49ers loss Sunday would’ve likely given Miami the 22nd pick. The Dolphins own the 49ers’ selection while the Philadelphia Eagles have Miami’s pick due to the two trades the Dolphins pulled off with the NFC teams last offseason ahead of the 2021 NFL draft. Miami traded back to No. 12 with San Francisco, sending the No. 3 pick, which previously belonged to the Houston Texans, to the 49ers. A move up from 12 to 6, where wide receiver Jaylen Waddle was selected, followed...
Sunday, January 16, 2022. 4:15 p.m. RDS and RDS Direct will host a playoff game between the 49ers and the Cowboys on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. S.Contents The San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys meet in the first round of the playoffs. 49 players took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter. Pierre Versailles’ pre-match analysis: Special collaboration One of the most stressful matches of the 1st round, this match between the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys will feature another team despite the NFL-high +14 turnover (34 turnover rates) and 10-7. Record, giving the ball to the opponent 24 times, for a modest difference of -4. Immediately, it scares me to San Francisco. This is far from ideal, with a turnover generous group coming to the home of a club betting on more opportunistic defense. The first question I ask is: Can 49 players defend the ball well? If the answer is yes, they are likely to surprise Arlington. After all, they have not sold in five games and their record is the oldest. Even though...

Despite a miraculous run to the AFC playoffs, the Las Vegas Raiders were eliminated by the Cincinnati Bengals on Super Wild Card Weekend. Because the Raiders were the No. 5 seed in the AFC after having gone 10-7 during the regular season, they will need to wait and see how the other five wild card games shake out before they know what first-round pick they will have. The Cincinnati Bengals picked up their first playoff win since 1991 after beating the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday night, 26-19. The last time the Bengals won a playoff game, Sam Wyche was roaming the sideline and calling plays for the team. The Bengals beat the Houston Oilers 41-14 and would later lose to the Raiders in the divisional round. Since then, the Bengals were on a massive playoff losing streak. Marvin Lewis guided the team back to the postseason during the 2005 season but the team lost in the wild card round and six more times after that. The losing streak is now snapped and the Bengals are back in the divisional round of the playoffs. Ryan Gaydos is the sports editor for Fox News and Fox Business. Russell Henley set the target Friday in the Sony Open by making a 30-foot eagle putt to cap off a big finish, and nobody could catch him. Nine years after Henley began his rookie season on the PGA Tour by winning the Sony Open, he played his final six holes in 6 under and posted a 7-under 63 for a three-shot lead over Haotong Li of China. Only two other players were within five shots of the lead. So much of the morning was up for grabs after 18-hole leader Kevin Na began to fade, with as many as five players having at least a share of the lead. Henley holed a greenside bunker shot for eagle on the par-5 18th hole, only to miss the green long and into a back bunker for bogey on the tough first hole. And then he couldn’t miss. He birdied both par 3s on the front nine from inside 10 feet, made a pair of 12-foot birdie putts and finished with his eagle. CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM Russell...

(David Gray/AFP via Getty Images) Murray bid for his first men's singles championship in more than two years was thwarted by Russia’s Aslan Karatsev in the final of the Sydney Tennis Classic on Saturday. The top-seeded Karatsev cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory for his third title on the ATP Tour.  Despite the loss, it was Murray's best week since earning his 46th career singles title in Antwerp in October 2019 and gives him plenty of reasons to be optimistic ahead of the Australian Open, which begins Monday. Murray will face Nikoloz Basilashvili — whom he beat in the round of 16 in this event — in the opening round. "I'd like to thank my team for all of their help this week,"...
ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) — Former US Open finalist Madison Keys has warmed up for the Australian Open in strong form winning an all-American final of the WTA tournament in Adelaide against Alsion Riske. The 26-year-old Keys never allowed her compatriot a look into the contest powering her way to a 6-1, 6-2 victory in just over an hour to claim her sixth WTA title. The former world No.7 Keys, who has slipped to her current 87th-ranking due to injuries and a form slump in recent years, had progressed to the final after overcoming a leg injury to beat third-seed Coco Gauff in three sets in another all-American match up in the semifinals. On Saturday, Keys showed why she has been a top-ten player with her powerful serve and attacking ground strokes proving too hot to handle for Riske as Keys claimed the first set in 29 minutes. The 57th-ranked Riske then lost her opening service game of the second set from which she never recovered as Keys broke again late in the second set and then...
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Old playoff foes Dallas and San Francisco haven’t met in the postseason since the last of three consecutive NFC championship games in the 1990s. The wild-card meeting Sunday is the first step toward a Super Bowl instead of the last, with Dak Prescott and the Cowboys (12-5) trying to get that far in the playoffs for the first time since the year after their rivalry with the 49ers was the biggest thing going in the NFL. Prescott was the starter from the beginning of his rookie season in 2016, leading Dallas to the top seed in the NFC before a loss in his playoff debut at home to Green Bay. Now he’s the $40 million-a-year quarterback trying to get the storied franchise’s long-awaited run going in his third trip to the postseason. “I don’t necessarily know why people have labeled the word ‘pressure’ as such a bad thing honestly,” Prescott said. “I think it creates high expectations and high standards, and they usually create high results.” Jimmy Garoppolo and the visiting 49ers (10-7) are two years...
Getty The Lakers pursued a trade for Cam Reddish (right). The Los Angeles Lakers continue to be linked to trade rumors as it appears the franchise is very active ahead of February’s deadline. The latest rumor linked the Lakers to a failed deal with the Hawks for promising wing Cam Reddish. The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner and Fred Katz reported the Lakers offered two second-round picks for Reddish, but the Hawks were holding out for a first-round selection. “The Hawks have made Reddish widely available since before this past draft cycle. The price then was a first-round pick, and it never changed,” Kirschner and Katz detailed on January 13. “Atlanta was looking for something closer to the slot where it drafted him, No. 10 overall, but nothing materialized. The front office had conversations with the Pacers, Lakers, Cavaliers and Pistons over the past several months, sources say, but the Hawks were always waiting for that first-round pick for Reddish. “Recently, The Athletic learned that the Lakers had offered two second-rounders for Reddish. Still, the Hawks believed a team...
With the conclusion of Week 18, it’s officially draft season for more than half the NFL. The top 18 picks are solidified, with the Jacksonville Jaguars claiming the No. 1 overall selection for the second year in a row. Here are The Baltimore Sun’s initial projections for the first round, which begins April 28 in Las Vegas: Note: Picks 19 through 32 are projected from the ESPN Football Power Index. 1. Jacksonville Jaguars: Kayvon Thibodeaux, EDGE, Oregon There’s no consensus top player in this year’s draft class, which makes the No. 1 pick a bit of a toss-up. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound Thibodeaux, the former No. 2 overall prospect in the country, recorded 19 sacks in three seasons for the Ducks and finished with a 91.3 pass-rushing grade as a senior, according to Pro Football Focus. He’d be a cornerstone piece for a Jaguars defense that ranked 31st in Football Outsiders’ DVOA. 2. Detroit Lions: Aidan Hutchinson, EDGE, Michigan The 6-6, 265-pound Hutchinson also has a strong case to be the No. 1 pick. The Heisman Trophy finalist put together a...
EMMA RADUCANU faces the toughest Slam opponent of her career next week – in the shape of a fellow US Open winner. Though Sloane Stephens has dropped to 68th in the world, the American, 28, won the New York Slam in the autumn of 2017 – four years before Raducanu was Queen of Flushing Meadows. 2Emma Raducanu is set to face Sloane Stephens in the first round of the Australian openCredit: Getty The pair will meet in the first round of the Australian Open and it will be the first time Raducanu has met a major winner in three Slam appearances. And all eyes will be on Raducanu’s form and fitness following her 6-0 6-1 humbling to Kazak Elena Rybakina in the first round of the Sydney International. The 19-year-old from Kent, who is seeded 17th in Melbourne, contracted COVID-19 before Christmas and has only played once in two months. CINCINNATI (AP) — Many in Cincinnati scoffed when the Bengals passed on elite Oregon offensive tackle Penei Sewell to take Ja’Marr Chase with the fifth-overall pick in the NFL draft last spring. Cincinnati sorely needed offensive line help, and Sewell seemed an obvious choice. Chase, like Sewell, sat out the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and was perhaps less of a sure thing. It’s hard to quibble with that call now. After shaking off some rust, Chase emerged as a record-breaking star and leading candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year while helping Cincinnati (10-7) get to the postseason for the first time since 2015. “I still have a lot more to do,” Chase said. “Hopefully I can break some playoff records.” The Bengals used the last two drafts wisely to add some critical parts and proven winners who drove this worst-to-first AFC North champion team. Taking Burrow with the first overall pick in the 2020 draft was a no-brainer. He won the Heisman Trophy and a national championship with LSU in 2019. His teammates — half joking, half not — nicknamed...
In a trade involving four teams, the Atlanta Hawks are trading Cam Reddish, Solomon Hill and a 2025 second-rounder for Kevin Knox and a 2022 first-rounder. One month after trades open up for players picked up in free agency, a comprehensive list includes those who are restricted, those with at least two years remaining on current contracts, and those with expiring contracts. The Jan 13. trade between the Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks includes players with each of those stipulations, as well as high-grade draft picks that could shape the future of each of these East Coast franchises. ATLANTA (AP) — The struggling Atlanta Hawks have traded forward Cam Reddish to the New York Knicks for a protected 2022 first-round draft pick. Atlanta confirmed the move on Thursday. The Hawks also are sending forward Solomon Hill and a 2025 second-round pick to the Knicks, and small forward Kevin Knox is heading to Atlanta in the deal. Reddish, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2019 draft, has averaged 11.9 points and 2.5 rebounds in 34 games, including seven starts, this season. The trade comes as the Hawks (17-23) have lost three consecutive games and seven of their last nine. Atlanta has fallen to 12th in the Eastern Conference standings one year after advancing to the conference finals. The Hawks agreed to trade Reddish one day after De’Andre Hunter scored 15 points in his return from wrist surgery. Hunter’s strong showing after missing two months provided encouragement he is ready to resume his role as the starting small forward. Knox has played in only 13 games this season, averaging 3.6 points and 1.7 rebounds. His best season came as...

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Throughout his first NFL season, Mac Jones has been a walking billboard for “The Patriot Way” — keeping his head down, working hard and trying only to do what’s asked of him to avoid self-inflicted mistakes. It has brought successes, such as him leading all rookie quarterbacks this season in wins (10), yards passing (3,801) and touchdown passes (22). Yet, it hasn’t kept him entirely immune from the ebbs and flows that inevitably befall every rookie QB. For Jones, that has meant enduring a 2-4 start, enjoying the spoils of a seven-game win streak and then struggling through three losses in New England’s final four games to end the regular season. It also added up to him helping lead the Patriots back into the postseason for the first time since Tom Brady’s departure following the 2019 season. While Jones acknowledges the stakes will be higher Saturday when the Patriots travel to Buffalo for their wild-card matchup with the Bills, for him it’s a reminder to cling to the blueprint that has gotten...
At the start of the season, it looked as if 2022 would be one of those rare years when the Big East didn’t have a player sure to be taken in the first round of the NBA draft. St. John’s Julian Champagnie appears to be playing himself into position to be among the first 30 players selected. The 6-foot-8, 215-pound junior established himself as one of the Big East’s premier players last season when he led the league in scoring and was named to the all-conference first team. This season, he is second in the conference in scoring and in the top 10 in rebounding, overall field-goal percentage, 3-point percentage, steals and blocks. He has scored in double figures in 44 straight games, including 23 outings with at least 20 points. “Nothing surprises me with this kid because he is one of the hardest working kids,” Red Storm coach Mike Anderson said. “I’ve had some pretty good kids that worked hard — Joe Johnson played for us at Arkansas, and Bobby Portis. He’s in that mold in terms of putting...
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Good or bad, Rick Spielman made plenty of impactful draft picks as general manager of the Minnesota Vikings. He drafted future Hall of Famers, first-round busts and late-round gems. He became notorious for dealing on draft day, moving up into the first round in multiple years and stockpiling day three picks. From 2012-2021, when Spielman officially held the title of general manger, only the Browns made more first-round picks than the Vikings. ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) — World No.2-ranked Aryna Sabalenka has lost another first-round match at an Australian Open tune-up tournament to a much lower-ranked opponent. Sabalenka lost 5-7, 6-1, 7-5 to Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson, who came into the match at the Adelaide International ranked No. 395. Last week in the opening round of the first Adelaide International tournament, Sabalenka lost 7-6 (6), 6-1 to Kaja Juvan, who is ranked 100th. While top-ranked Ash Barty is a perfect seven from seven this year after sweeping to the singles and doubles titles at the first of successive Adelaide Internationals, Sabalenka hasn’t won in more than two months. Barty is not playing in Adelaide after her successful last week in the South Australian state capital. At the Sydney Tennis Classic, Ajla Tomljanovic beat Anna Schmiedlova 6-2, 6-3 in a first-round match. Tomljanovic will next face fifth-seeded Paula Badosa after the Spanish world No. 9 beat Jelena Ostapenko 7-6 (1) 6-1. The 28-year-old Tomljanovic has never gone further than round two at the Australian Open but last year made the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in...
