A letter by Edward VIII revealing how he helped his brother George VI have an affair with the original Australian 'good-looking Sheila' has been unearthed 103 years later. The then Prince of Wales persuaded Lord Loughborough to play a round of golf with him so his brother 'Bertie' could be alone with his wife Lady Sheila Loughborough. It took place when the two princes visited the Loughborough's residence in Winchester, Hampshire, in 1919. At the time Edward was in a relationship with his married lover Freda Dudley Ward and 'Bertie' was said to be infatuated with her Australian friend Shelia. In the letter, Edward told Dudley Ward he 'lured Loughie away' to 'give Sheilie a chance of being alone with Bertie'. THE Jackson 5 were a family band formed and managed by patriarch Joe Jackson from 1964 till 1989. The band was inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 and served as a springboard for Michael Jackson’s success as an independent artist.  2Janet Jackson on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in 2020Credit: Getty Images - Getty Why was Janet Jackson not in the Jackson 5?    Janet Jackson, the youngest of Joe’s ten children, was born in 1966. Her father had begun organizing his older children into musical acts two years prior. The original group, consisting of five of Janet's six brothers, signed a record deal in 1967, when Janet was just an infant. Janet later proved to be an incredibly talented singer and performer in her own right. She released 11 studio albums, starting with an eponymous album in 1982 and concluding with Unbreakable in 2015.  In a career that spanned nearly four decades, Janet has sold about 100 million records, ranked 9th all-time in sales by a female artist. China has radically edited the original ending of the cult classic film Fight Club to comply with the country's restrictive censorship rules.   A version of David Fincher's 1999 film, starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, was made available in China on streaming platform Tencent Video over the weekend. But much to the dismay of fans in China, Fight Club had been radically edited so as to transform the anarchist, anti-capitalist message that made the film a global hit.  Instead of multiple buildings exploding, as in the original ending, the authorities win in the new censored version.  China has some of the world's most restrictive censorship rules with authorities only approving a handful of foreign films for release each year - sometimes with major cuts.    A version of David Fincher's 1999 film, starring Brad Pitt and Edward Norton, was made available in China on streaming platform Tencent Video over the weekend RELATED ARTICLES Previous 1 Next Student, 20, who repeatedly raped girl, 12, he met on Tinder... Days after blocking the advancement of vital voting rights legislation and corrupting the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Republican politicians are advancing their undemocratic agenda by advocating for the creation of “election police.” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is asking for $5.7 million to create an Office of Election Crimes and Security. In Georgia, former senator and gubernatorial candidate David Purdue promises a new Election Law Enforcement Division. Other Republicans pushing Trump’s Big Lie are sure to follow. They aren’t breaking new ground, but joining a long tradition of dressing up efforts to suppress and intimidate Black voters as somehow protecting the integrity of our American democracy. A tipping point of the 1960s voting rights movement was the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge on March 7, 1965. Dr. Martin Luther King, John Lewis, and voting rights activists marching from Selma, Alabama, to the state’s capital were infamously attacked on what’s come to be known as “Bloody Sunday” by Southern police led by Theophilus Eugene “Bull” Connor, the president of the Alabama Public Service Commission. Americans nationwide saw for...

While the network did not reveal a reason behind the axing, the low ratings were perhaps a motivation behind the decision. The Hills: New Beginnings focused on the same group of friends from the original series, which made stars of various people including Brody Jenner, Heidi Montag, Spencer Pratt, Audrina Patridge, and Kristin Cavallari. The show's cancelation also comes after The O.C. alum Mischa was not asked to return following her appearance on the first season of the revival. Previously, a source told...
THE DAILY NEWSLETTER – MONDAY, JANUARY 17, 2022 MEDIA WINNER: Mehdi Hasan MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan offered a statement of “love and support” on his eponymous show Sunday evening to the Jewish community in the wake of the Texas synagogue hostage attack, and it’s a must-watch segment. More detailed coverage of Saturday’s events is below in the A-Block, but the key facts are that a 44-year-old British man named Malik Faisal Akram took four people hostage at a Texas synagogue, eventually being killed by police Saturday evening. All four hostages escaped unharmed. “What happened yesterday was an outrage,” Hasan said. “Synagogues shouldn’t be places where Jewish-American worshipers have to be afraid. Synagogues shouldn’t be places that require armed guards.” “All of us have a role to play in pushing back against the anti-Semitic tropes and bigoted rhetoric that inevitably fuel anti-Jewish violence and hate crimes,” he declared, before unequivocally expressing his love and support for the members of the synagogue and all his Jewish viewers. It was a powerful message, given additional gravitas due to Hasan’s position as one of...

It feels like every other week we have a sequel or reboot. This holds true again today. This is technically the fifth film in the Scream franchise and the last one was released in 2011. The series started in 1996! If you’re a fan of the film you’ll know it’s actually horror-comedy. My girlfriend may disagree. She HATES horror movies and anything with gore. She was a trooper though! I did promise to leave if at any time she wanted to go. SHOCKINGLY she liked it more than me! So the question should be mentioned, is this another cash grab? Another film just meant to tug on nostalgic heartstrings and get you in the seats or would we be reinventing the wheel? Onto the film. We open 25 years after the original murders by Billy Loomis and Stu Macher that started the “ghostface” killer and the murders that happened for years to come. We see one of the main characters Tara (Ortega) texting on her phone and making food. This is similar to how the original film started with Drew...
People of ancient Mesopotamia created a super-strength hybrid animal by crossing domestic donkeys with wild asses, a new genome sequencing study reveals.  Researchers in Paris have studied genomes from equid skeletons found at a 4,500-year-old burial site at Umm el-Marra in northern Syria.   Results suggest the skeletons once belonged to a domesticated hybrid animal called a 'kunga' – a cross between female donkeys and male Syrian wild asses – and therefore provide the earliest known evidence of hybrid animal breeding.  Humans didn't ride on top of kungas, according to the experts; rather, the animals were likely used to transport goods and equipment and pull chariots in battle. The size and speed of kungas made these hybrid animals a better option than asses for the towing of four-wheeled war wagons.  Kungas were produced by societies in Mesopotamia – the historical region of Western Asia – 500 years before the arrival of domesticated horses in the region.     It's already known that sumerians – people of southern Mesopotamia – had been using equid-drawn four-wheeled war wagons on the battlefield for centuries, as evidenced by...
SCREAM is back with an all-new installment in the iconic franchise, and Friday's new release features a bunch of returning cast members, as well as a slew of fresh stars. With the 2022 slasher sequel now out in theaters, take a look at where the original 1996 cast – including Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox – is now, over two decades later. 9The original Scream movie came out in 1996Credit: Rex Neve Campbell (Sidney Prescott) 9Credit: Dimension Films/Kobal/Shutterstock / Getty The Canadian actress, 48, made a name for herself as the main character, high school student Sidney, in the Scream franchise, which kicked off in 1996. Aside from the slasher series, which sees masked Ghostface killers terrorizing Sidney and all those around her, Neve also starred on the popular family drama Party of Five, from 1994 to 2000. Most recently, she worked on Netflix’s House of Cards as LeAnn Harvey and also starred in the Disney+ musical drama, Cloud, which came out last year. By Jake Coyle | Associated Press Ring. Ring. Twenty-six years after the original, “Scream” calls again. We’re now up to the fifth film in the franchise, but the first since 2011’s “Scream 4.” Enough time has passed that this one, titled simply “Scream,” bears no number, no caller ID. That’s presumably because this “Scream,” which features the original cast and introduces a new generation of callers and stabbers, is sequel and reboot in one. Or, as one character explicitly defines in “Scream,” a “requel.” Part of the charm of the original “Scream,” a glossy, couldn’t-be-more-’90s slasher, was its knowingness. Wes Craven’s film, written by Kevin Williamson, made a plaything of genre conventions by having the characters openly discuss horror tropes while also being bludgeoned by them. The bright idea of the new “Scream” is to double down on the meta. Here, the long-running “Stab” movies — the fictional stand-in for the “Scream” franchise — is mocked as cheeseball shlock. In the movie’s opening phone call, one that mirrors the call Drew Barrymore received in the original, Tara (Jenna Ortega) —...

(CNN)Always meta in its nods to the genre's quirks, the latest "Scream" is so self-referential as to risk swallowing its own tail. Yet this quarter-century-later "requel" (a term specifically explained in the movie) turns out to be a great deal of fun, cleverly wedding familiar faces with new stars in what isn't exactly a remake or reboot but rather plays like a refresh.Horror has been one of the more reliable subgenres during the pandemic, but the current Omicron wave has complicated the calculus. Still, wherever people wind up seeing this designed-to-please slasher movie -- even if that's minus a crowd -- it should possess a healthy shelf life.Half the battle was won, in hindsight, during the casting, tapping Melissa Barrera ("In the Heights"), Jenna Ortega ("Stuck in the Middle") and Jack Quaid ("The Boys") for key roles among the younger contingent, while bringing back Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette in their original roles. The trick comes in replicating elements of the original by the late director Wes Craven (to whom the movie's dedicated) and writer Kevin Williamson -- a...

NOT many people expected a film about a 10-year-old boy who battles two bumbling burglars to become a massive success and holiday staple, but a lot of it is due to the incredible cast. Released in 1990, Home Alone went on to bank $285.8million in the US and Canada, and another $190.9million in other countries against a budget of $18million, making for a huge profit. 10Released in 1990, Home Alone was a massive success and continues to be a holiday stapleCredit: Alamy 10The film has since spawned four sequels, however, it's the original that people continue viewing The classic film also launched a then unknown child actor, Macaulay Culkin, into one of the biggest stars in the world and helped his costars land even more roles. THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS (15) 148mins     ★★★☆☆ 4Another chapter to the story, with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss back for another journey down the rabbit hol IT is 18 years since Neo and Trinity sacrificed their lives to return free will to humanity in the finale of The Matrix trilogy. But franchise co-creator Lana Wachowski still had a glitch to scratch. That is why she has added another chapter to the story, with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss back for another journey down the rabbit hole. Without sister Lily this time, Wachowski teamed up with Cloud Atlas author David Mitchell and screenwriter Aleksandar Hemon. They continue, in exciting fashion, the existential crises of man versus machine, Matrix versus reality and blue pill versus red pill. Legacy sequels, such as this, feel an inevitability in the current cinematic climate of remakes and reboots. Resurrections is very aware of that; Neo is back to living as Thomas Anderson, though now he is the award-winning designer of a Matrix video game released 20 years earlier. His therapist (Neil Patrick Harris) prescribes...

Yes. I know…ANOTHER SEQUEL. BUT IT’S THE MATRIX!!!!! If you haven’t seen these films let me give you a little back story. In 1999, The Matrix was released and with no exaggeration changed the way action films were made. We had slow-motion fighting. The special effects were ahead of their time and the allegories peppered throughout the trilogy were so deep that college courses and dissertations have been done time and time again. After the success of The Matrix in 1999 we were given two sequels: The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. A neat tidbit on the two sequels. Reloaded was released in 2003 and then SIX MONTHS LATER Revolutions was. I remember finishing The Matrix Reloaded and that it ended on a cliffhanger. I couldn’t wait for the conclusion. To be honest the sequels for me weren’t amazing but as a whole, the series was so important to myself and my friends and family. We would discuss the cliffhangers, the allegories, if he or she was alive or not. Cut to 2021. We have waited 18 years for...

Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss are reunited as Neo and Trinity...roles they first played in 1999...but last played back in 2003.This is a complicated movie to explain. The story is set in two very different worlds...one is everyday life... one is run by machines. ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa -- The National Christmas Center might be the largest collection of Christmas artifacts in the world. The Center was the vision of James Morrison, also known as 'Santa Jr.' and the 'Keeper of Christmas.' He opened the original center in Paradise, Pa. It lasted nearly 20 years before closing in 2018 because of financial complications.Enter David Abel, the steward of Stone Gables Estate, who purchased the collection and has spent the last three years reimagining the National Christmas Center. The center reopened this year in a temporary location featuring many of the artifacts that were featured at the original location plus additions from David's collection and items from Executive Curator John Enterline. The space is designed as Abel's hometown of Columbia, Pa., from the 1940s with storefronts decorated for the holidays. You can walk around and see collections of Buyer's Choice dolls, the original Woolworths, toy train setups, toy soldiers and doll houses. It's meant to be a nostalgic experience. Not far away is a three-mile drive-through light display featuring a covered bridge, an active steam engine train and a...
Thus, if Omicron is now the new ploy to return to March 2020-style government authoritarianism, shouldn’t governments downright ban the shots rather than promote and even mandate them? Fauci is predicting hospitals will be “overwhelmed” when Omicron becomes dominant. Mandating the shots, according to his misguided view of Omicron, is like requiring a blowtorch to “extinguish” a fire. In fact, Fauci even admitted earlier this week that South Africa, a country with a low vaccination rate, didn’t experience much critical illness from Omicron because of built immunity. Moreover, as everyone acknowledges this version of the virus spreads very quickly, the worst thing you could do now (if you believe Omicron must be avoided) is get a shot. Studies have shown the shots initially suppress your immune system for several weeks before ramping up antibodies. Therefore, by the time you would have the theoretical protection (which seems not to work for Omicron anyway), you likely would have gotten the virus anyway. A study published earlier this year by the Statens Serum Institut found that health care workers within seven days of...
Moderna's Covid booster shot can increase a person's Omicron variant-fighting antibodies 20-fold, data revealed by the company on Wednesday show. The data shows that its initial two-dose vaccine series is far less effective against Omicron that it is against other virus strains - producing 37-fold less neutralizing antibodies against the new strain than it did against the organa, Wuhan virus strain. Two weeks after receiving a booster shot, a person's antibody levels grow 20-fold, though their Omicron fighting antibody levels after the additional shot are still half that of a person who has only received two shots has against the original strain. Moderna's booster shot in 50 micrograms - half the dosage of the first two vaccine shots. The company says it is working on gathering data for how a 100 microgram dose would fair against the new variant. The larger dosage would need additional approval from regulators to be used in the U.S.  It is promising data in the fight against the new Covid strain that has already been sequenced 241 times in 33 U.S. states and the District...
The National Defense Authorization Act sailed through the Senate Wednesday on a bipartisan 89-10 vote, clearing its path to President Joe Biden’s desk. The annual defense bill, which Congress has passed for 61 years in a row, totaled $768 billion, $25 billion more the White House originally requested. It passed the House on Dec. 7 with 169 Democrats and 194 Republicans voting in favor and cleared a Senate filibuster Tuesday on an 86-13 vote. “Our nation faces an enormous range of security challenges, and it is more important than ever that we provide our military men and women the support they need to keep America safe,” said Rhode Island Democratic Sen. Jack Reed, the chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee. “To that end, this bill makes great progress.” While the compromised version of the bill found the overwhelming support of Congress, the negotiation process was rocky. The original version passed the House in September only to be stonewalled by Senate Republicans weeks later over what they alleged was a lack of amendment votes. As senior members of the House...
NASHVILLE, Tennessee – Lucas Hoge has released a new Christmas album, 12.25 that is not to be missed. He along with some help from friends, Jamie O’Neal and the Swon Brothers played a (mostly) Christmas show featuring new and traditional music at the renowned Listening Room. Despite everyone still trying to recover from the pandemic, in 2021 Hoge released his very popular Sunday Sessions record and continued working on his TV show Hoge Wild which airs on the Sportsman Channel. That is why I was a little surprised he had time to release a full-length Christmas album entitled 12.25. Hoge confessed, “I’m a huge Christmas nut. I’m not keeping it a secret anymore. I love the music, singing it, playing it, writing it. It’s one of my passions.” When the proclaimed producer Kent Wells volunteered to work on the album, Hoge knew it was time. Wells recommended he do a duet with O’Neal and they did “Let It Snow” which is one of the best versions of the song I have heard in a while. He also does...

One of the things that made 'The Golden Girls' an ageless, classic television show is that it showcased a group of women, living together and talking about basically anything and everything -- from sex and relationships to life and family. But most importantly, they were having lots of fun, and as a result, the audience had a lot of fun along with them. If only that were the case with the misguided, woke reboot of 'Sex in the City'. Let me preface what I am about to say next with this -- I am very sad to feel this way about the revival, aptly named 'And Just Like That...'. I am an old millennial -- 37 years old to be exact. The original HBO show hit its height of fame, popularity, and cultural relevance as I was coming into my formative years and during my time at Columbia University in New York City. Just not the same: The show was a true cultural phenomenon and for many reasons we should be forever grateful for the barriers that it broke regarding open...
Elvis Presley wanted to be in it; so did Marlon Brando and Warren Beatty. But even without them, the 1961 film West Side Story remains the greatest screen musical ever, certainly when measured in Academy Awards. It won ten. Only three films, none of them musicals, have won more. Now, with Steven Spielberg's 'reimagined' version set to arrive in cinemas today, the original West Side Story, which came out in the U.S. 60 years ago, is getting more attention than it has for decades. Spielberg's film is a triumph and has been enthusiastically reviewed — described as 'relentlessly dazzling, swoonily beautiful' and his finest film in 20 years. But it can't eclipse the 1961 movie for behind-the-scenes gossip, glamour, guile and greed. The fictional gang battles between the Puerto Rican Sharks and the all-American Jets echoed the real-life tumult as the 1957 Broadway show was turned into a movie for the ages. The Original: Rita Moreno, pictured, now 89 and an executive producer of Spielberg's film, in which she also dazzles in a small but crucial supporting role, later admitted in...
The highly-anticipated Sex and the City reboot is finally here. The first two episode of And Just Like That... premiered on Thursday, December 9, but unfortunately, they're getting mostly negative reviews - with one critic branding the new show a 'painful downer' and another calling it a total 'bummer.' The original show debuted back in 1998, and now, more than two decades later, HBO Max has dropped its spinoff series with original stars Sarah Jessica Parker returning as Carrie Bradshaw, Kristin Davis returning as Charlotte York, and Cynthia Nixon returning as Miranda Hobbes - and it has received a lot of negative feedback. The first and second episodes were packed with glamor and sass - however, they were also filled with loss and sadness. At the end of the first episode, Carrie is left shocked and heartbroken, when her husband Mr. Big dies from a sudden heart attack after participating in a Peloton class.  The highly-anticipated Sex and the City reboot is finally here. The first two episodes of And Just Like That... premiered on Thursday - and has quickly been panned...
The Police have released a never-seen-before Christmas video for their number 1 hit song Don't Stand So Close To Me. From their third album Zenyatta Mondatta, the track topped the UK Singles chart in 1980. The original video saw the band - Sting, 70, Andy Summers, 78, and Stewart Copeland, 69 - perform in a school setting, dressed as scholars wearing mortarboards in some scenes, whereas the new film sees them playing in the snow.
