(AP) — Arizona State has hired former Baltimore Ravens head coach Brian Billick as an offensive analyst and advisor to head coach Herm Edwards. “I have known Brian since the 1980s and he is a person whom I completely trust,” Edwards said in a statement on Monday. “He has built one of the finest reputations the NFL has ever known, serving as a head coach, an assistant coach and as a respected television analyst. Brian has one of the brightest offensive minds in football today and that is especially why I hired him. He will serve as a valuable resource to our entire coaching staff, but specifically to our offensive staff.” Billick won the Super Bowl with the Ravens in 2001 and led them to three other playoff appearances in nine seasons. He went 80-64 before being fired in 2007. He has...
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Georgia’s Lovasea Carroll is leaving the national champions and joining South Carolina’s football program. Carroll posted his decision Monday on social media. Carroll was moved from running back to the secondary by the Bulldogs and is expected to return to the offensive backfield with the Gamecocks. Carroll, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound freshman from Warrenton, Georgia, posted a photo of himself in a Gamecocks’ uniform with the words, “Committed, Lovasea Carroll, South Carolina,” across the bottom. Carroll played in four games in the secondary for the Bulldogs last season. He finished the season with three tackles and a pass breakup. Carroll is expected to bolster a running back spot at South Carolina after its two leading rushers this season, Kevin Harris and ZaQuandre White, declared for the NFL draft. Carroll’s pickup continues a strong use of the NCAA transfer portal by South Carolina’s Shane Beamer, who went 7-6 in his first year as coach. The Gamecocks have picked up ex-Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler and his Sooners’ teammate tight end Austin Stogner. South Carolina...
If Jim Harbaugh ultimately leaves for the NFL soon, the Michigan Wolverines have a backup plan to replace him quickly. Jim Harbaugh finally led Michigan to a win over Ohio State this past season, and indications are he wants to be…re-compensated after taking a pay cut last year. Harbaugh has what he surely considers unfinished business in the NFL, after reaching the NFC title game (with one Super Bowl loss) in the first three of his four seasons as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers from 2011-2014. There are indications Harbaugh would take the Las Vegas Raiders head coaching job if he were offered it. Until the Raiders hire someone and that door is closed, or the Chicago Bears (where he spent a big chunk of his playing career) hire a head coach, the possibility he leaves Michigan on short notice will linger.Michigan has a backup plan should Jim Harbaugh leaveAccording to Jason LaCanfora of CBS Sports, Michigan has a backup plan in case Harbaugh does leave. It remains to be seen if Raiders owner Mark Davis can lure Jim Harbaugh...
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn defensive coordinator Derek Mason has stepped down and been replaced by Jeff Schmedding. Tigers coach Bryan Harsin announced that switch and other changes to the defensive staff on Saturday. Mason, a former Vanderbilt head coach, held the coordinator position in Harsin’s first season. Schmedding had been assistant head coach/linebackers coach and defensive run game coordinator after running Harsin’s defense for two seasons at Boise State. Harsin had already fired offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and replaced him with Austin Davis. Cornerbacks coach Zac Etheridge will take over coaching Auburn’s secondary and serve as recruiting coordinator. Special teams/edge linebackers coach Bert Watts is now an associate head coach. Harsin also hired former Auburn defensive lineman Jimmy Brumbaugh as defensive line coach and ex-Florida assistant Christian Robinson as linebackers coach/defensive run game coordinator ___ More AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/college-football and https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-football-poll Copyright © 2022 The Associated Press. Agents with the U.S. Marshal Service nabbed the second and final suspect wanted in the Florida shooting death of a college football player who was home for Christmas break more than three weeks later, authorities announced Friday.  Nyquan Priester, 20, was arrested Thursday and charged with second-degree murder for the death of 18-year-old Dylan Jenkins, according to U.S. Marshals. COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYER KILLED IN 'SENSELESS' FLORIDA SHOOTING DURING CHRISTMAS BREAK Jenkins returned home to Sarasota, Florida, for Christmas break after finishing his first semester at Madonna University, outside Detroit. Jenkins was with a group of 40 to 50 people, including friends, at Sarasota’s Ackerman Park around 11 p.m. on Dec. 29, 2021 "when several shots were fired from the back seat of a vehicle in the parking lot," the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said. The teenager suffered a gunshot wound to his back and could not be saved, authorities said.  Investigators later linked the vehicle, a gold Hyundai, to Priester and another 20-year-old, Kalvion Turner, who allegedly said he was in the car at the time of the shooting but did...
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Frank Cignetti is ready for a third stint at Pittsburgh. The Panthers have hired Cignetti as the team’s offensive coordinator more than 30 years after he began his coaching career at the school as a graduate assistant and a decade removed from a brief stint as offensive coordinator under former Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt. The school made the announcement on Friday. The 56-year-old Cignetti replaces Mark Whipple, who left to take the same position at Nebraska. The well-traveled Cignetti broke into coaching at Pitt in 1989. He’s spent the last 32 years in coaching at both the college and professional levels. Cignetti has worked for six different NFL teams and six Football Bowl Division programs. He most recently served as the offensive coordinator at Boston College in 2020 and 2021. Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi called Cignetti’s hire a “tremendous coup” for the Panthers. ““He’s an extremely talented football coach and teacher,” Narduzzi said in a statement. “Frank has worked with some of the greatest quarterbacks in the game. He knows what it takes to build a championship-caliber...
BERKELEY — Cal football coach Justin Wilcox, who last month turned down a job offer from his alma mater, Oregon, has signed an extension that will keep him with the Golden Bears through the 2027 season. Wilcox was rewarded with the extension Thursday after leading the Golden Bears to two bowls in five seasons as coach. The contract also increases the salary pool for assistant coaches. “Justin Wilcox is a football coach who shares our values and vision, and we want to ensure that he is the leader of our program for the long term,” athletic director Jim Knowlton said in a statement. “He is a great fit for Cal Athletics and our university, with a philosophy that places an emphasis on developing young men on the field, in the classroom and as people.” Talk of a contract extension for Wilcox surfaced last month, shortly after he turned down the Ducks. Wilcox has a 26-28 record and led the Bears to back-to-back winning seasons and bowl games in 2018 and 2019 for the first time in...
BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — California football coach Justin Wilcox has signed an extension through the 2027 season. “He is a great fit for Cal Athletics and our university, with a philosophy that places an emphasis on developing young men on the field, in the classroom and as people.” Wilcox has a 26-28 record and led the Bears to back-to-back winning seasons and bowl games in 2018 and 2019 for the first time in a decade. Cal went 5-7 this season but beat rivals Stanford and Southern California down the stretch. The Bear have won two of the last three Big Games against Stanford after losing the previous nine matchups. “I appreciate the opportunity...
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — NCAA member schools voted to ratify a new, pared-down constitution Thursday, paving the way for a decentralized approach to governing college sports that will hand more power to schools and conferences. The vote was overwhelmingly in favor, 801-195, and was the main order of business at the NCAA’s annual convention. NCAA President Mark Emmert said in his state of college sports address the new constitution was more of a “declaration of independence” that will allow each of the association’s three divisions to govern itself. The new constitution is 18 1/2 pages, down from 43, and mostly lays out guiding principles and core values for the NCAA, the largest governing body for college sports in the United States with more than 1,200 member schools and some 460,000 athletes. The move is just part of a sea change for the NCAA and the first major shift in its governance model since 1996. It comes with the hope that it will reduce college sports’ exposure to legal challenges after a resounding rebuke from the Supreme Court last spring. For Division...
CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall will miss spring practice because of an offseason surgery. The school announced McCall, defensive end Josaiah Stewart and tight end TJ Ivy Jr. will all be out of workouts that start Feb. 8 due to surgeries. The school did not provide additional details of the injuries, although McCall missed two games this season with an upper-body injury against Troy in November. He returned to lead Coastal Carolina (11-2) to victories in the team’s final three games against Texas State, South Alabama and North Illinois in the Taigreeter Cure Bowl. School spokesman Kevin Davis said all three players are expected to be ready for next season. McCall, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound junior from Indian Trail, North Carolina, led the FBS in passing efficiency rating (207.6) and was second nationally in pass completion percentage (.730). He threw for 2,873 yards with 27 touchdowns and three interceptions. Stewart, a 6-2, 245-pound freshman from Everett, Massachusetts, set the Coastal Carolina record with 12.5 sacks this past season. He played in...
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett is returning for another season after leading the Bulldogs to their first national championship in 41 years. Bennett, who carried a flip phone and avoided social media during the 2021 season, made an exception to his policy by posting the words “One More Year” on his Instagram account on Wednesday. Bennett began his Georgia career as a walk-on. He then transferred to a Mississippi junior college before returning to the Bulldogs. As a senior in 2021, Bennett replaced JT Daniels as the starter and then kept the job. Bennett will take advantage of the NCAA’s “Super Senior” rule to use the added year of eligibility granted in 2020 because of the pandemic. Daniels, who transferred to Georgia from Southern Cal, has again entered the transfer portal as he seeks a new school for his final year of eligibility. Georgia wide receiver Jermaine Burton also entered the transfer portal on Wednesday. Bennett led Georgia to a 33-18 win over Alabama on Jan. 10 for its first national championship since 1980. Bennett passed for...
Clemson football head coach Dabo Swinney has finally accepted a transfer addition and it’s incredibly on-brand for the anti-portal coach. Dabo Swinney has been plenty willing to express his dissatisfaction with the transfer portal over the years. To his credit, he’s walked the walk in addition to talking the talk. He has never dipped into the transfer portal. Until now. On Monday, quarterback Hunter Johnson revealed he’s transferring to join the Tigers for the 2022 season. Hunter Johnson is returning as Dabo Swinney’s first transfer portal additionIt’s a fitting transfer considering Johnson started his career at Clemson. Leave it to Swinney to make his first official transfer portal addition a former player. Of course Dabo Swinneys first ever transfer addition is a former Clemson player. It just makes too much sense. https://t.co/q0BOB3oy3H — Chris Hummer (@chris_hummer) January 17, 2022 The “portal” in the sense of there being a database where players available via transfer are listed and organized has only existed for a few years in college football. So technically Johnson is Swinney’s first portal addition. However, Swinney has...
Georgia football standout Jordan Davis shows off his Atlanta Braves jersey underneath during his school’s national championship parade. Jordan Davis is a man of the people, as the Georgia football star repped his Atlanta Braves jersey underneath while celebrating his alma mater’s first national championship in 41 years. While much of Dawg Nation and Braves Country overlap, it is pretty cool to see a native Charlottean show off his love for his favorite MLB team during one of the best days of his life. The unanimous 2021 All-American defensive tackle took home the Bednarik and the Outland Trophy this past college season. He and Butkus winner Nakobe Dean were the biggest stars on this team. TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama cornerback Jalyn Armour-Davis is skipping his senior season to enter the NFL draft. Armour-Davis announced his decision Saturday on social media, saying “my time here has definitely prepared me for the next step.” He tied for the team lead with three interceptions in 11 starts. But Armour-Davis battled a hip injury late in the season, missing the Auburn game and both matchups with Georgia in the Southeastern Conference and national championship games. It was his first season as a starter in the secondary. Armour-Davis joins a number of Alabama players entering the draft, including left tackle Evan Neal, cornerback Josh Jobe and wide receivers Jameson Williams, John Metchie and Slade Bolden. ___ More AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/college-football and https://twitter.com/AP_Top25. LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA football coach Chip Kelly agreed to a new four-year contract Friday after leading the Bruins to their best season since 2015. The agreement came two days before the $9 million buyout on Kelly’s original contract would have expired. Kelly said he had discussions about returning to Oregon last month before the Ducks hired Dan Lanning. “We are extremely appreciative of the entire UCLA administration for their support of our football program,” Kelly said in a statement. “We have a tremendous amount of gratitude for our players and staff. Their tireless work and commitment to our vision have built a great foundation. We are excited to continue to build this program into something that makes the UCLA fanbase proud.” UCLA had its first winning season in Kelly’s tenure in 2021. It went 8-4 and closed with three straight wins, including a 62-33 blowout over Southern California. The Bruins earned their first bowl appearance since 2017, but could not play in the Holiday Bowl against North Carolina State due to COVID-19 protocols. Kelly is 64-32 as a...
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State coach Ryan Day continued to revamp his coaching staff by hiring of two defensive assistants Friday. Tim Walton, a former Ohio State player who spent the last 13 years coaching in the NFL, most recently with the Jacksonville Jaguars, was added as cornerbacks/secondary coach. Perry Eliano, who coached cornerbacks for the past two seasons under Luke Fickell at Cincinnati, will be the new safeties/secondary coach for the Buckeyes. The Bearcats’ national-best pass defense helped them advance to the College Football Playoff. Matt Barnes, last season’s secondary coach who became the primary play-caller after coordinator Kerry Coombs was demoted during the season, was been named the defensive coordinator at Memphis. Day had previously replaced Coombs with Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. Offensive line coach Greg Studrawa and linebackers coach Al Washington also won’t be returning to the Buckeyes. Coombs, the defensive coordinator for the past two seasons, was ousted after the defense struggled last season against better teams, notably in a 35-28 loss to Oregon and a 42-27 setback at Michigan. ___...
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina has hired former Jacksonville Jaguars assistant Sterling Lucas as its outside linebackers and defensive ends coach. The school’s board of trustees approved a two-year deal for Lucas on Friday. The contract runs through Dec. 31, 2023 and will pay Lucas $350,000 a year. Lucas takes over for Mike Petersen, who left to join coach Billy Napier at Florida. Gamecocks coach Shane Beamer said there were lots of interest in the position, but believes that Lucas has what the team needs to keep advancing forward. “He’s eager to get to work,” Beamer said of his new hire. Lucas, who grew up about 30 miles away in Orangeburg, South Carolina, has worked in the NFL since 2015. He served a variety of roles for the Baltimore Ravens through 2000 before becoming an assistant defensive line coach for the Jaguars. Lucas got his start in coaching at North Carolina State as a graduate strength and conditioning coach and defensive graduate assistant. ___ More AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/college-football and https://twitter.com/AP_Top25 Sign up...
The 2021 college football season was fantastic. It had all the elements of intrigue to keep fans captivated from Saturday to Saturday — and every game in between.  CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM Georgia Bulldogs QB Stetson Bennett (13) takes a selfie as confetti flies at the conclusion of the Alabama Crimson Tide versus the Georgia Bulldogs in the College Football Playoff National Championship, on January 10, 2022, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN. (Michael Allio/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Fans returned to the stands after an abbreviated and disjointed COVID season which had no non-conference games, quarantines galore, and teams completely opting out of bowl games to give their players some much-needed rest and reprieve.  Playing games in half empty (or even empty) stadiums took its toll on the game. Players didn’t experience nearly the same emotions in an empty arena, and fans didn’t consume the lifeless games with near the same veracity. The 2020 wasn’t any fun for college football. Enter 2021, the year in which two CFP first-timers made their debut. There was...
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa center Tyler Linderbaum announced Friday he’ll skip his senior season and enter the NFL draft. The consensus All-American was the Big Ten’s offensive lineman of the year and received the Rimington Trophy as the nation’s top center. He also was a finalist for the Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy. Linderbaum started 35 consecutive games at center after arriving from Solon, Iowa, as a defensive lineman. He is projected to be a first-round draft pick and the first center selected. “To my coaches, thank you for taking a chance on a small town Iowa kid,” Linderbaum tweeted. “Thank you for pushing me to be a great football player, but an even better man.” ___ More AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/college-football and https://twitter.com/AP_Top25. Atlantic Coast Conference Commissioner Jim Phillips says now is not the time for College Football Playoff expansion, citing an abundance of uncertainty throughout college sports and the NCAA. “To the ACC, we don’t have a College Football Playoff problem,” Phillips said Friday during a conference call with reporters. “We have a college football and collegiate athletics-slash-NCAA problem.” Phillips said with the NCAA about to embark on a transformation of Division I, CFP expansion should not be a priority. Phillips also cited the continuing need for federal legislation regarding name, image and likeness compensation for athletes, the lingering ramifications of last year’s Supreme Court ruling that struck down the NCAA’s limits on athletes’ educational benefits, and the possibility of athletes organizing. “The membership of the ACC is very much aligned in its position that now is not the time to expand the College Football Playoff,” Phillips said, taking the strongest public stance against early expansion of any of the conference commissioners who have been involved in the process. The 10 conference commissioners who make up the CFP management committee, along with...
Statue of Head Coach Nick Saban. (Photo by Wesley Hitt/Getty Images) Ranking the 30 best college football coaches of all time. In no other place in sports is the head coach as important than in college football. The sport is derived by coaching. There isn’t a lot of reactionary thinking like there is in basketball or hockey. There isn’t on-field communication like there is in soccer and baseball. Football is controlled by the opposing coaching staff on every single play. On top of that, college coaches are in charge of recruiting, so they are responsible for the talent level on the team. It just changes the focus of every program. College coaches are recruiting players in the middle of the season. While some coaches in professional leagues can focus on the game only, college coaches never stop recruiting and they never have an offseason. The best coaches of all time stand above the rest. Some had a short stint in college before going to the NFL, but their impact was felt for decades to come. Others stayed with programs for...
The Clemson football team looks to build off its disappointing 10-3 mark from a season ago. For the first time since the 2014 college season, the Clemson football team did not make the College Football Playoff. Admittedly, it was not even close. Clemson lost three games during the regular season and was out of the mix right before October. Losing by seven points to eventual national champion Georgia on Labor Day Weekend was a bad omen. Falling on the road to North Carolina State ended their playoff dreams and losing at Pitt before before Halloween kept them from winning the Atlantic. However, Clemson has had too much success for us to reasonably think it is over for the Tigers’ dynastic run in the ACC. Their days of winning national titles remains to be seen, but Clemson should be the presumptive favorite to win the ACC next season in a bounce-back campaign. Of course, a team is only as good as its ability to navigate its 12-game schedule in a given year. Here is a way-too-early projection for how Clemson’s 2022...
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska has hired former TCU assistant Bryan Applewhite to coach running backs, coach Scott Frost announced Thursday. Applewhite spent the past two years coaching running backs at TCU, where the Horned Frogs ranked in the top 30 nationally in rushing both seasons. Applewhite’s hiring filled the final opening on the staff. The Huskers previously brought in Mark Whipple as offensive coordinator, Mickey Joseph as receivers coach, Donovan Raiola as offensive line coach and Bill Busch as special teams coordinator. Nebraska ranked fifth in the Big Ten and 48th nationally in rushing last season, averaging 181.2 yards. Before coaching at TCU, Applewhite spent five seasons as running backs coach at Colorado State. ___ More AP college football: https://apnews.com/hub/college-football and https://twitter.com/AP_Top25 Sign up for the AP’s college football newsletter: https://apnews.com/cfbtop25 Copyright © 2022 The Associated Press. TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama offensive lineman Evan Neal is entering the NFL draft and will skip his senior season. The Crimson Tide All-American announced his decision Thursday in a post on Twitter. The 6-foot-7, 350-pound Neal is regarded as a potential top-5 draft pick. He started 39 games in three seasons, playing left guard in 2019 and right tackle in 2020 before moving to left tackle as a junior. The Tide won the Southeastern Conference title before falling to Georgia in the national championship game Monday night. Neal was selected as a permanent team captain in 2021. Ryan Day makes a smart, in-state hire to hopefully fix his Ohio State football defense. Ryan Day knows the only way his Ohio State Buckeyes are playing for a national championship next year is if its pedestrian defense gets better in a hurry. He was already able to land former Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles. The Pokes defense was a big reason they had arguably their best season in program history. Now Day has targeted Cincinnati Bearcats cornerbacks coach Perry Eliano to coach the safeties at Ohio State. Eliano coached the best cornerback duo in the country last year in Coby Bryant and Sauce Gardner. With C.J. Stroud returning under center, it is most critical for the Buckeyes defense to get better to help its Heisman finalist quarterback get this team over the top. Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud and the top 10 college football quarterbacks returning for the 2022 season. The 2021 college football season was the most unpredictable year ever in terms of upsets. Top 25 teams dropped at an unprecedented rate as the country failed to produce reliable powerhouse contenders. Even the national champion Georgia Bulldogs couldn’t avoid a loss against Alabama before exacting their revenge. The only constant is change as players graduate and transfer. The 2022 season is promising even if half the nation’s most recognizable and accomplished passers are gone. There will be a new gaggle of top producers to take the place of Kenny Pickett, Bailey Zappe, Carson Strong and Kaleb Eleby. Of course, there will be new starters who will thrive. All eyes will be on Texas and Penn State as Quinn Ewers and Drew Allar take over. But we’ll worry about them when we actually get to see them play. For now, we’re ranking the top-10 returning college football quarterbacks for 2022. These players have the blend of talent, production, and physical skill sets to be...

Georgia football finally can claim the National Championship Trophy as their own, but not before they take it to an odd location for a couple of days. On a Monday night in Indianapolis, Georgia football erased decades’ worth of digs and jokes at their expense. At long last, the Bulldogs were able to get to the mountaintop of college football and defeat Alabama, the program that’s been their biggest hurdle since Kirby Smart took over, to win their first national championship since 1980. It was a historic moment but one that many people knew had to be coming soon with the talent that Smart has been gathering in Athens. Naturally, the fans are more than enthused about it. And they’ll even have an opportunity to go see, touch and even kiss the College Football Playoff National Championship Trophy. The venue for that opportunity, however, is a bit strange. As reported by local news outlets, the trophy will be on display at local Walmart stores in Athens throughout the week because nothing screams the best college football team in the country like...

Georgia football legend Stetson Bennett essentially sleepwalks through his Good Morning America interview. Who needs sleep when you’re a champion? Just look at Stetson Bennett running on fumes while being interviewed on Good Morning America. The Georgia football quarterback guided the Dawgs to their first national championship in 41 seasons. To pull this off, the Dawgs had to beat their perpetual nemesis in the Alabama Crimson Tide, the reigning college football dynasty that had beaten Georgia seven times in a row dating back to 2008, including the 2021 SEC Championship Game in Atlanta only a few weeks ago. Bennett looked so tired that it is possible he might not remember talking to NFL legend Michael Strahan after his head finally hits the pillow. Monday night, the Dawgs took on a familiar foe – Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide. Just a few years ago it was the Tide celebrating – but tonight was a different story. The Bulldogs were a dominant team all season long, but a loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship had some questioning if they could pull out a win in the rematch. Not only did they win, but in the final moments the defense delivered the kill shot, delivering a pick-six with less than a minute remaining. It was fitting, considering how that very defense had led the Dawgs all year long. Now a 40-year drought is over. Congratulations to the Georgia Bulldogs and their fans. The Georgia Bulldogs found a way to end their championship drought and the college football world is celebrating along with them. For the first time in over four decades, the Georgia Bulldogs are back on top of the college football world. Kirby Smart and his Bulldogs team finally broke through and beat the Alabama Crimson Tide to claim the national championship. The win was huge for several reasons. It’s not often that someone beats Nick Saban and it’s even rarer that one of his former assistants is able to do just that. Of course, the context here is important. Smart was able to beat Saban on this stage, ending Alabama’s winning streak over Georgia and avenging some significant losses. And now, college football media members are reacting to that impressive victory.College football Twitter reacts to Georgia Bulldogs beating Alabama Crimson Tide in National ChampionshipThis win was huge for Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett, who was largely overlooked as a walk-on. By RALPH D. RUSSO INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Stetson Bennett delivered the biggest throws of his storybook career and Georgia’s defense sealed the sweetest victory in program history, vanquishing rival Alabama 33-18 in the College Football Playoff title Monday for its first national title in 41 years. Bennett connected with Adonai Mitchell on a 40-yard touchdown to give No. 3 Georgia a 19-18 lead with 8:09 left and then hooked up with Brock Bowers for a 15-yard TD on a screen to put the Bulldogs up with with 3:33 left. The final blow came from the defense. Kelee Ringo intercepted an underthrown deep ball down the sideline by Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young. Instead of going down with a little over a minute left, Ringo took off and behind a convoy of blockers went 79 yards for a touchdown that set off a wild celebration by the Georgia fans who packed Lucas Oil Stadium. The Bulldogs hadn’t won a national title since freshman Herschel Walker led them there in 1980. If simply snapping the drought wasn’t good enough, doing against No....
Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett fired two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter to help lift the Bulldogs to their first national championship since 1980, beating Alabama 33-18. After a questionable fumble call that led to an Alabama score earlier in the period, Bennett would regroup and toss a 40-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Adonai Mitchell to put the Bulldogs back up. Bennett would strike again later in the fourth with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Brock Bowers. With 3:33 left, Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Bryce Young would get the ball back to try to force overtime. Young would throw a Pick Six to Kelee Ringo, which would seal the deal. COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Wake Forest running back Christian Beal-Smith, the Demon Deacons’ leading rusher the past two years, is transferring to South Carolina. Beal-Smith, who entered the transfer portal earlier this month, announced his choice on social media Monday night. Beal-Smith’s addition continues a hot offseason for the Gamecocks and coach Shane Beamer. Ex-Oklahoma quarterback Spencer Rattler and tight end Austin Stogner joined the program last month. Beal-Smith, a 5-foot-10, 205-pound tailback from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, led Wake Forest with 732 yards in 2020. He gained 604 yards this past season as the Demon Deacons won the ACC Atlantic Division.
