The Los Angeles Rams beat decisively beat their division rival in the Wild-Card Round finale of the NFL playoffs on Monday night. One would think that victory would lead to a festive atmosphere of friendliness and warmth. One would be wrong. Despite the 34-11 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, Rams fans duked it out – primarily with each other – as several brawls broke out in the stands and on the concourse. BOSTON (CBS) — Sixty-four years to the date that he broke the NHL’s color barrier while making his debut for the Boston Bruins, Willie O’Ree’s jersey number was raised to the rafters, where it will remain alongside the all-time greats in franchise history. The Bruins retired the No. 22 in honor of O’Ree on Tuesday night at the TD Garden, a ceremony that was postponed from last season so that fans could be in attendance for the occasion. The U.S.-funded United Nations is providing cash to help job-seeking migrants trek up through South America, Central America, and Mexico, says Todd Bensman at the Center for Immigration Studies. “It is definitely organized,” Bensman told Breitbart News on Monday during a reporting trip to Tapachula in southern Mexico, where migrants arrive after crossing Central America: They’re giving money out at way-stations up and down the [migrant] trail … There’s a process [in Tapachula]: You get your Mexican [visa] papers, then you go to the UN building next door, get an appointment, and they interview you and look at your situation…  It’s not big money, and not all of them get it, but enough get it to sustain them so they don’t have to go home, and so they can go on to the next way station. Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray made his playoff debut on Monday night but his rough start just brought out the memes. Kyler Murray was a Pro Bowler for the second time in his three years in the NFL so there’s no question he can get the job done in the regular season. The Wild Card Game against the Rams was supposed to be his chance to prove that he could raise his level in the postseason. Unfortunately for Cardinals fans, Murray’s playoff debut was pretty much as bad as it could have been in the first half. Murray was 7-of-17 for 28 passing yards and two interceptions. He looked shaky and completely unsure of himself. For the left, no holiday is off-limits for shameless political flacking. On Monday, Hollywood celebrities used Martin Luther King Day to push the Democrats’ “voting rights” bills that are designed to seize election oversight power from states and roll back measures including voter identification requirements. Stars including Mark Ruffalo, Alyssa Milano, Viola Davis, and even the rock group Pearl Jam seized on the holiday to urge fans to pressure their senators into supporting the various pieces of legislation, even though they are essentially dead in the water after Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) said they will oppose eliminating the filibuster. Like many on the left, the stars are using a rhetorical trick that equates the so-called “voting rights” bills to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. But the two aren’t remotely similar except in name. While the latter was a landmark civil rights law that enfranchised minorities, the Democrats’ present-day efforts amount to a partisan attempt to rig the game so that they never lose another election. Disney-Marvel’s Avengers star Mark Ruffalo quoted Martin Luther King, Jr. while pushing...
A Canadian woman found herself in a precarious situation — standing on the roof of her car as it slowly sank beneath the surface of an ice-covered river — but not so precarious that she couldn’t stop and take a selfie. According to a report by CTV News, the woman was driving her car on the frozen Rideau River in Ottawa around 4:30 pm Sunday when it broke through the ice and started sinking into the frigid water below. Local residents came to her rescue, using a kayak to allow her to get off the roof of her car, shortly before it sank entirely below the surface, and pull her to where the ice was more solid. Emergency crews had been called but the woman declined treatment at the scene. A local talk radio show posted video submitted by a listener that showed the rescuers, dragging a blue kayak,  hurrying across the snow and ice over to the woman as she stands on the sinking yellow car. “She’s on top of the car, she’s going in,” a woman can...

Dallas Cowboys fans are apoplectic after seeing how the officials screwed them out of a win. The Dallas Cowboys are going home after losing yet another home playoff game, as it 100 percent was the zebras’ fault this time. When Sid Bream slid, it was good thing. The size and scale of the undersea volcanic eruption in Tonga drew the attention of social media early Saturday morning. Above the earth, satellites caught the explosion and the massive shockwave it sent. On the ground, unconfirmed videos reportedly showed the aftermath as massive waves flooded coastal areas. On Friday, the United States logged over 800,000 new cases of COVID-19 and 2,300 more COVID-19-related deaths. It capped off a week in which the nation recorded an incredible 4 million new cases over a seven-day span, and in which some sources have indicated that the real limit on that number was simply the U.S. hitting the boundary for available testing. And so the omicron variant is raging across all 50 states, Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin continue to put their egos ahead of preserving democracy, and a major winter storm is sweeping across much of the nation, bringing snow, freezing rain, and a whole lot of mid-winter misery. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was hailed as the man who “saved Christmas” on Tuesday over his handling of the supply chain crisis as Americans around the country shared photos of empty grocery shelves on social media. Speaking at a press conference at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, Buttigieg said that while the supply chain crisis will continue throughout the pandemic, he celebrated the transportation of goods over Christmas. “As long as the pandemic persists, as long as we are making up for decades of past disinvestment, we are going to see impacts on shipping times and shipping cost,” Buttigieg said. “When there is an issue affecting ports here, you will feel it as far away as my Indiana hometown. “Not only is this about the presents under the tree, this is about essential goods like medical goods that are needed in this moment of continued public health challenge,” he added. Buttigieg hailed the shipment of goods over the Christmas season as “an extraordinary achievement,” noting that the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach “processed 14 percent more containers...

By Michael Hurley, CBS Boston BOSTON (CBS) — Brad Marchand has played hockey for a very long time. But on Monday night, he really was a hockey player. It’s a bit of a cliche, stating that hockey players aren’t like the rest of us. Yet time and time again, it is proven to be true, with Marchand doing those honors after taking a wicked high stick to the nose late in the first period against the Washington Capitals. Marchand went down to the ice in pain, bled all over Capital One Arena, but didn’t miss a beat, opting to dry off his bloodied face with a towel and return to the game as quickly as possible. The hashtag #BareShelvesBiden has been making the rounds on Twitter as shoppers use the slogan when posting pictures of empty and sparse grocery store shelves to the social media site. Images of barren shelves were shared by Americans far and wide, including media members, politicians, and other shoppers as they feel the effects of supply chain issues and labor shortages under the Biden administration. Andrew Luck is totally unrecognizable, as the former Indianapolis Colts and Stanford Cardinal quarterback lost so much weight in retirement. When people saw that 30-something skinny dad-looking guy on ESPN shortly before kickoff, it turns out that was Andrew Luck. Luck has been completely out of the public spotlight since abruptly retiring from football before the 2019 NFL season. The former Indianapolis Colts and Stanford Cardinal quarterback was just elected into the College Football Hall of Fame. Patrick Smith/Getty Images Head coach Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers walks off the field after a win over the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium on January 9, 2022. A lot had to happen on Sunday for the Pittsburgh Steelers to make the 2022 NFL playoffs as the No. 7 seed in the AFC. As noted by Brooke Pryor of ESPN, Pittsburgh had a mere 8% chance of making the postseason tournament, as the Steelers not only needed to beat the Ravens in Baltimore, the Jaguars (2-14) had to upset the Colts and the Chargers-Raiders nightcap could not end in a tie. The latest Steelers news straight to your inbox! Join the Heavy on Steelers newsletter here! That said, one could be forgiven for referencing Jim Mora’s infamous “Playoffs?!?” rant from 2001. But the Steelers took care of business, with a nerve-wracking 16-13 overtime win over the Ravens that eliminated Baltimore from playoff contention. The victory—combined with Jacksonville’s 26-11 win over Indianapolis—inspired Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin to bust out a dance move on Instagram. That unlikely...
Now that it is officially a Hollywood pariah, the Golden Globes had little choice but to announce its winners via social media during its non-televised ceremony on Sunday. But even that seemingly simple task went wrong as the group’s Twitter feed became a string of bizarre and non-sensical pronouncements, including reportedly referring to West Side Story as a comedy before correcting the error. This elicited widespread social media mockery for the already beleaguered Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization of pseudo-journalists and junket whores behind the Globes. On Sunday, the official Golden Globes Twitter feed frequently omitted the titles of the movies or TV shows for the winners in the acting categories. Stars including Kate Winslet, Andrew Garfield, and Michael Keaton received congratulatory tweets that failed to mention what they won for. (In case you were wondering: HBO’s Mare of Easttown, Netflix’s Tick, Tick… Boom!, and Hulu’s Dopesick.) They may be in movies made for the small screen, but these leading ladies are big stars. Georgia fans arrived to Indianapolis in droves over the weekend and they were intent on making themselves heard ahead of Monday’s national championship game against Alabama. For many, one of their first stops was Indianapolis’ famous St. Elmo’s steakhouse, where it seemed like a busload of Georgia fans ended up Saturday night. While at the fine dining eatery, Georgia fans began chanting and barking in unison. Among the diners was Georgia sports reporter Radi Nabulsi, who shared video of the fanfare on social media. While much of the dining room joined the ruckus, at least one person was so displeased with the...
The Minnesota Vikings opted to fire both head coach Mike Zimmer and general manager Rick Spielman, sending shockwaves around the NFL. Zimmer, for one, seemed to expect this news heading into the final weeks of the season. After failing to make the playoffs yet again, a change was necessary at the top. General manager Rick Spielman, however, was evidently shocked he was fired. Spielman helped put together this talented Vikings team, although the group has yet to fully gel. Spielman had been with the Vikings since 2006, trickling upwards in the organization. His longevity with Minnesota likely led to his shocked reaction to being kicked to the curb. NFL Twitter couldn’t believe the Chargers pulled off a comeback to force OT with the Raiders in a game where a tie would send both teams to the playoffs. The final week of NFL action in the regular season did not disappoint. And the Chargers-Raiders game was the cherry on top of all of it. With both sides battling for their playoff lives, and that of the Steelers, the game featured a bunch of twists and turns. Las Vegas jumped out to a 10-0 lead before Los Angeles wrestled back the lead. A controversial pass interference call gave the Raiders the lead back and they pulled way out in front with a 29-14 lead halfway through the fourth quarter. Certain moments crystallize the futility of football teams and their complete lack of direction. The Giants had several of those on Sunday, but one of them really stood out. A meaningless game and staring down the barrel of 4-13 with a quarterback who is not your team’s future is usually a time when most coaches will open the playbook and play with reckless abandon. Giants coach Joe Judge, however, went a different way. Late in the first half, the Giants inexplicably ran quarterback sneaks on consecutive plays from inside their 5-yard line. The New York Giants’ latest wretched season comes to a merciful end on Sunday. But, as is their wont, the team managed to squeeze in one last bit of ignominy in under the wire. The embarrassing denouement to the Giants season came with just over five minutes remaining of the second quarter of their contest with the Washington Football Team. On third down and 9, trailing 3-0 and backed up against their own goal line, the Giants raised the white flag and didn’t even bother trying to get a first down — instead running a quarterback sneak apparently designed to give their punter a little breathing room. This complete surrender was predictably met with a loud chorus of boos from the Giants fans who were dumb loyal enough to put themselves through three more hours of misery before the offseason. Fox announcers Daryl Johnston and Chris Myers completely destroyed Big Blue for abandoning all pretense of actually trying to win. “I mean, really?” Johnston said. “You’re at the 4 yard line, and you don’t feel comfortable enough in your...
