The Chicago Bears held their second day of rookie minicamp Saturday in Lake Forest. The 11-man draft class continued to learn the ropes amid a pack of 69 players that also included 16 undrafted rookies under contract and a horde of tryout players. Here are four things we learned. 1. Offensive lineman Ja’Tyre Carter continues to honor the memory of his late brother. Carter, one of three seventh-round picks, arrived at Halas Hall this week with wide eyes. He is from a one-stoplight town in White Castle, La., and journeyed to the NFL through Southern University in the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision. So when he pulled into Bears headquarters for rookie minicamp, it was an experience. “Crazy,” Carter said. “It was a sight, man. Just coming from where I come, small school in high school and college, it was a lot to take in.” An offensive tackle at Southern, Carter is beginning a transition to guard and will have to fight the next four months to earn a roster spot. He said he pushes himself every day in honor of...
PHOENIX (AP) — Chris Paul scored 19 of his 30 points during a brilliant fourth-quarter shooting display and the Phoenix Suns beat the New Orleans Pelicans 110-99 on Sunday night in Game 1 of the first-round playoff series. The top-seeded Suns needed Paul’s big finish despite dominating most of the game. The Pelicans shook off a slow start, cutting a 23-point deficit to 79-71 by the end of the third. New Orleans kept hitting shots in the fourth, but that’s when Paul took over, hitting three 3-pointers and a layup in 2 1/2 minutes in a flurry that kept the Pelicans chasing. The ageless veteran will turn 37 later in these playoffs if the Suns advance far enough, but once again looked a decade younger. Paul has never won a championship, falling just short with the Suns last year when they lost to the Bucks in six games in the Finals. He’s fond of saying he never takes postseason basketball for granted and his 130th career playoff game was among his best. Game 2 is Tuesday night in Phoenix....
Getty Marcus Smart, Boston Celtics Defense has been the Boston Celtics calling card all season, and despite a slow start to the basketball calendar, the team is now ranked as the top defensive unit in the NBA. Unfortunately, though, Robert Williams’ recent injury has thrown a wrench into the team’s plans, and the Celtics defense has looked frail in his absence. The Celtics have dropped games against the Toronto Raptors and Miami Heat since their rim-protector suffered a meniscus tear and also struggled to overcome an Indiana Pacers team that was without their star big man in Myles Turner. Boston has undoubtedly had to adjust their coverages without Williams in the rotation. We’re seeing the team execute more drop defense on pick-and-roll coverages, and the switching system has become far less fluid too. It’s those alterations that have caused the Celtics’ defensive identity to waver in recent days, and according to Marcus Smart, everybody needs to step up to right the ship. OAKLAND — An Antioch man has accepted a plea deal and a 21-year prison term in the 2017 killing of a man who the defense says was his lifelong friend, court records show. Artisan Manalastas, 36, pleaded no contest to manslaughter and will be eligible for a 15 percent sentence reduction, with good behavior. He receives credit for the past five years he has spent in Santa Rita Jail awaiting resolution in his case. In 2017, Manalastas was charged with murdering Andrew Williams on June 4 of that year. Prosecutors alleged that Williams and Manalastas were in the same car when the shooting occurred, around 3:20 a.m., and that Williams was pushed out of the car into the roadway on the 1600 block of Linden Street. Even as Manalastas accepted a manslaughter conviction, his attorney, Seth Morris, wrote in court records that he believes it was a case of lawful self-defense. Morris said Manalastas’ has prior convictions and was not entirely truthful with police, which raised enough risk that he wanted to avoid a life sentence. The plea deal will...
Evan Neal was the big man at Alabama’s pro day, and not just because of his towering physical presence. The Crimson Tide’s 6-foot-7, 337-pound left tackle was easily the highest-rated prospect going through pro day Wednesday before representatives of all 32 NFL teams. It didn’t matter that he was just doing position drills. A three-year starter at three different positions, Neal didn’t feel the need to run the 40 at Alabama’s indoor practice facility or the NFL combine. He’s projected as a likely top-five pick in April’s draft, with some talk about becoming the program’s first No. 1 overall pick since Harry Gilmer in 1948. “It would mean everything, definitely,” Neal said. “Coming from a school like this, you have a plethora of prospects that were worthy enough to be No. 1. For that to be me, that would be awesome for sure.” The NFL presence at Alabama’s pro day included head coaches like the New England Patriots’ Bill Belichick and the Dallas Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy, along with Pittsburgh general manager Kevin Colbert. Whatever his draft position ultimately becomes,...
For the first time in too long — maybe weeks, maybe a month — the Chicago Bulls took complete control of a game. Monday night’s 113-99 win over the Toronto Raptors at the United Center couldn’t have come at a more necessary, even desperate time. After weeks of blowout losses and scattered grind-it-out wins, the Bulls were crumbling in confidence and in the Eastern Conference standings. But they won Monday in their style on their home court. The victory ended a three-game losing streak, but more importantly, it proved the Bulls’ winning formula from early in the season still has the same bite. “There was times in all these games … we’ve had moments we played really, really good basketball, but it’s just not sustained for a long enough period of time,” coach Billy Donovan said. “We had these moments and these lapses that really hurt us. But tonight, from start to finish, we played to an identity.” The win served as a welcome-back party for forward Patrick Williams, who played his first game in almost five months after wrist...

Dallas Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban claims he could mount a successful 2024 presidential run but won’t for the sake of his family. “No,” Cuban said in response to Jay Williams saying Cuban should run for President in 2024 on his NPR The Limits podcast. “Do you think you would have what it took to be the president of the United States of America?” Williams replied. “Of course,” Cuban answered. “Well, I shouldn’t say, of course you never know until — until you know, right? It’s the hardest job in the world so I’m not going going to be that arrogant.” Cuban explained that he is the man for the job, but is worried about his family. “At the same time, relative to anybody else, I think I can do I could do the job, but I would never put my family through that,” he said. “As much as charisma is important to getting elected, the whole process is the worst thing possible for a family. You literally have to disregard, unless you have, like my kids are 12, 15 and...

(@nikkkkbonitto) January 15, 2022 As for who Bonitto was specifically talking about, that’s not entirely clear. Was Nik Bonitto throwing shade at Mario Williams or someone else? The obvious answer is Mario Williams. The former four-star wide receiver announced his commitment to join USC on Saturday a few hours before Bonitto went off on Twitter. However, there are other candidates who are considering the Trojans as well. Quarterback Caleb Williams is...
