PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Monday, Feb. 21, is both a federal and state holiday, but knowing what exactly to call it can be tricky. Some call it George Washington’s birthday, while others call it Presidents’ Day. READ MORE: Protesters March For Justice In Peter Spencer's DeathThose over the age of 60 remember when Feb. 22 was a state and federal holiday to celebrate the birthday of George Washington, the man who led Americans to victory and independence, and our first president. But that all changed when Congress rearranged our national holidays. “Presidents’ Day is an unofficial name for the holiday,” said Prof. Andrew Simpson, a Duquesne University historian. “It comes out of some larger changes in how we celebrate federal holidays in the U.S. since the 1960s.” Spurred by the retail business community and chambers of commerce, Congress adopted the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, saying a three-day weekend was good for business and workers. Washington’s birthday was one of the casualties, moved in 1971 to the third Monday in February. “Whenever you have a three-day holiday, one of the big concerns,...

BOSTON (CBS) — By any measure, Red Sox prospect Jarren Duran was qualified to earn a spot on the Team USA roster for the upcoming Olympics. The problem for Duran is that he may be playing too well. With the 24-year-old center fielder hitting 15 homers with a .981 OPS for Triple-A Worcester this season, he remains on the cusp of getting a call-up to the big leagues for the first time in his career. Because of that, Team USA opted to leave him off the roster, so as not to have to lose him in the midst of fighting to win gold in Tokyo. READ MORE: Does Anybody Want To Talk About Josh Taylor? Duran spoke with WBZ-TV’s Dan Roche about that situation on Sunday. “You know, it sucks, because I would love to wear USA across my chest,” Duran said.”But they have a good team and I hope they go on and win gold. I think they can do it and I hope they represent us really well.” The California native took part in Olympic qualifying games in June,...
Alex Goodlett/Getty Images Pittsburgh Steelers guard David DeCastro blocking for quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Late Thursday afternoon the Pittsburgh Steelers made the consequential decision to release 6-time Pro Bowl guard David DeCastro, prompting further consternation about the state of the team’s offensive line. The Steelers immediately addressed the position via free agency, signing 5-time Pro Bowler Trai Turner to a one-year contract. The latest Steelers news straight to your inbox! Meanwhile, Joe Starkey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette was able to reach DeCastro via text, who indicated that he is facing ankle surgery. “I have to get surgery on my ankle a third time,’ DeCastro texted Starkey. “I tried to fix it last year but the bone spurs kept coming back. It nagged me pretty bad all last year.” That could account for why DeCastro had a subpar season in 2020, at least by his standards. The 31-year-old received a relatively low Pro Football Focus grade (64.1, including a 50.0 run blocking grade) with his play also...

Students and other people walking around the Georgetown area of Washington, D.C., signed a fake petition ahead of Memorial Day to ban the holiday honoring fallen military service members. The petition, authored by Campus Reform, a conservative news site and higher-education watchdog, calls for support to ban Memorial Day in the U.S. for glorifying "American Imperialism." Campus Reform reporter Addison Smith interviewed those who signed the petition in a video published on the outlet's website. Fox Nation contributor and retired Marine bomb technician Joey Jones told "Fox & Friends Weekend" on Saturday that one of the young men in the video appeared to be about the same age as he was when he fought in his first war. "Have you ever seen the movie ‘Frozen’? I've got a 2-year-old daughter. I watch it a lot more than I want to," Jones said, making an analogy. "There's a snowman in the movie ‘Frozen,' and he's so stupid and ignorant to the world around him, he can't wait until summer. He sings a whole song about summer, and he's a snowman." WHAT...

Members of Congress stand to applaud Capitol Police officer Eugene Goodman You know what the Senate is doing next week? Nothing. They’re not in session next week. You know what they could be doing? Listening to witnesses. House impeachment managers could call witnesses in Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, and it wouldn’t take away one minute of productive time. They could call former chief of staff Mark Meadows and ask him to detail Trump’s actions on the afternoon of Jan. 6. They could call Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and have him discuss calls from both Trump and Lindsey Graham. There’s absolutely no reason they could not call Mike Pence and have him confirm that he, not Trump, finally authorized the use of the National Guard. They could call every member of the Trump White House who resigned following Jan. 6 and ask them a simple question: “Why?” And, based on a story repeated by CNN last night, they should call House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler. They could then recount the call, in which McCarthy reportedly tried to...
