Victor Morales fought some of the biggest names in boxing as an amateur. He possesses profound skills and wants to shake up the featherweight division. You may not know it, but featherweight boxer Victor Morales owns several victories over undefeated welterweight Vergil Ortiz Jr. Now, those wins came during their youth in the amateurs, but Morales got the better of Ortiz when they were kids. Ortiz has come a long way since then and has grown four divisions, but Morales was a stud as an amateur, and he still is today as a professional. Morales (15-0-1, 8 KOs) is undefeated going into the co-main event of Golden Boy’s fight card on Thursday, May 12, against Alberto Torres. He’s looking to keep his undefeated record while pushing his name up the ranks. Being from Vancouver, Washington, Morales doesn’t get the same press as some other fighters from larger areas. Morales is a boxing gem in the Pacific Northwest and has been for some time. He started boxing at seven years old and came up with some of boxing’s best. Besides Ortiz, he...

Mercito Gesta hopes to keep his dream of being a champion alive when he fights Joel Diaz Jr. on Thursday, April 21, on Golden Boy’s DAZN card.  Manny Pacquiao is a folk hero in the Philippines. He rose out of poverty to become a world boxing champion, senator and presidential candidate. Early in his career, Mercito Gesta drew comparisons to the great Pacquiao. But three losses largely erased those comparisons, proving how cold this boxing game is. Gesta (32-3-3, 17 KOs) only has three losses on his record, but many have counted the past championship contender out. Ironically, Pacquiao has eight losses on his record and is considered one of the best boxers in history. However, he won world titles across eight divisions and beat boxing Hall-of-Famers. Gesta never equaled those accomplishments, but who has? Like Pacquiao, Gesta is also a southpaw boxer from the Philippines. When he was winning, that’s all anybody saw–another great Filipino hope. Gesta was a prodigy of sorts growing up in Cebu, Philippines. He didn’t start training until he was 15, even though his father was a former...

(credit: CBS) Program Director CC Edwards added, “Commitment. Commitment in this program but also commitment in respect for others in jobs and we also try to help them get jobs when they are old enough.” It’s a program the crooks who ripped them off earlier this week could have benefitted from. On either Monday night or Tuesday morning, the thieves took one of the program’s trailers which was full of equipment. Edwards described what he saw on tape: “Either a Durango or a Chevy Tahoe backing up. It gets the front part of the trailer hooking it up and then driving through the alley,” he said. (credit: CBS) Inside the trailer was everything the brotherhood needed to put on amateur boxing matches including a full-size portable boxing ring, the bell, judges’ chairs, medical equipment, uniforms,...

AIBA said a total prize fund of $2.6 million was in place to award medalists in each category, with $100,000 for gold, $50,000 for silver and $25,000 for bronze. The men’s championships will be held in Belgrade, Serbia, from Oct. 24 to Nov. 6. That event is scheduled for this year but has no listed venue or dates on AIBA’s competition calendar. “It is the first time AIBA will reward medalists of the world championships financially, and this is how it should be,” AIBA president Umar Kremlev said. “This money is well-deserved taking into account the years of preparations required to earn a place at AIBA’s top tournament and the efforts made.” The move could help AIBA rally...
