Monday, March 14, is “Pi Day,” because the date “3/14” resembles the mathematical constant’s approximate value of 3.14. That number — as you no doubt remember from math class way back when — is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. But you didn’t click on some link to relive the debilitating boredom of math class, did you? You clicked for some sweet offers on pie-related fare, and Yours Truly has been poking around, bugging local and national businesses about potential ways to celebrate the big day with some slice-ables. Here are some of the special offers that will be offered around town on that roundest of days, March 14. BOSTON (CBS) — When Kyle Schwarber sat for his postgame press conference following Game 3 of the ALCS on Monday night, he did so wearing a Waltham Hawks shirt. The clothing was a nod to Barstool Sports’ podcast host Jared Carrabis’ assertion that Schwarber looks like he grew up close to Boston as a Red Sox fan. Schwarber is actually from Ohio, but he’s embraced the odd phenomenon. And that meant purchasing pizza for the Waltham police and fire departments on Friday night. If you just get a hot oil pie from St. Pete’s forthcoming Colony Grill, you get one little stinger pepper in the middle.Colony Grill Stamford/Facebook Good news, pizza lovers. Colony Grill is headed down from Connecticut and to the 600 Block of downtown St. Petersburg where it’ll open its flagship Florida location at 670 Central Ave. The original pizza place in Stamford, Connecticut was a few decades old when it was bought out in 2010 by Chris Drury, Ken Martin, Paul Coniglio and Cody Lee—all 1989 Little League World Series winning teammates. According to St. Pete Rising, the concept has six other locations across its home state, New York and Virginia. The menu is simple: pizza and drinks, chief brand officer Ken Martin told the local blog. Nothing else besides the 12 toppings that accompany the New England-style pies (no crust, just cheese up to the end). The most popular of those topping is Colony’s signature hot oil. “It’s a pepper-infused olive oil. If you just get a hot oil pie, you get one little stinger pepper in the middle...

A pizza shop employee in Australia was caught delivering hot and fresh coronavirus to customers this week. South Australia began the first of six days in lockdown on Wednesday, after local officials confirmed dozens of new cases of the virus — a spike the state of 1.7 million hadn’t seen since April. Woodville Pizza Bar, in Adelaide, was named a hot spot by contact tracers after learning that a supposed highly contagious COVID-19 patient had visited the restaurant. But after further investigation, local police commissioner Grant Stevens admitted on Friday that the super-spreader was, in fact, an employee at the restaurant. South Australian premier Steven Marshall put the blame on the unnamed worker’s carelessness. “SA health contact tracers found that one of the close contacts linked to the Woodville Pizza Bar deliberately mislead the contact tracing team,” Marshall said in a press conference. “We now know that they lied.” South Australian Chief Public Health Officer Nicola Spurrier announces restrictions being eased after a lie given to contact tracers about the Woodville pizza bar sparked panic.Getty Images As a result, the...
The Aggie Theatre in Fort Collins, which has been closed since March 13 because of the pandemic, is reopening on Saturday, October 24 with a two-night stand from electronic duo Break Science. In the weeks to come, bands including Wood Belly and Float Like a Buffalo are scheduled to take the stage; Gasoline Lollipops will wrap up this wretched year with a glorious New Year's Eve and New Year's Day stand. COVID-19 regulations require the venue's intimate shows to host no more than a hundred per sitting. "We are drawing from the wealth of amazing local and regional talent for these shows, and we can't wait to get the team back to work and bring back the artists and fans to do what they love most, creating and loving live music," says Cheryl Ligouri, CEO of Fort Collins Entertainment, which operates the Aggie, and Z2 Entertainment, which runs the Boulder Theater and Fox Theatre. Tickets to the concerts, which are all 21-plus, can be bought in tables of four or eight, and Tony's Pizza will be available for...
L TO R: Kurt Ferguson, Shane Bittaker, Traci Bryant Ferguson.C/O JACK PALLINO'SJack Pallino’s Napoletano Style Pizza and Sports Bar is on the cusp of offering sips, bites and a prime atmosphere for sports lovers in Dunedin. The restaurant is looking to make its debut this month at 718 Broadway, next door to its sister concept, Jack’s Bottle Shop, which made its debut in June. Jack’s is a descendant of the Nina Hospitality group, also known for Caracara, Coattails, and Taco Baby.  Chef Tracy Bryant Ferguson and her team at Nina Hospitality have poured so much energy into every detail of this forthcoming concept and gave CL the scoop in an email interview. “Shane [Bittaker], Kurt [Ferguson], and I had resurfaced the pizza sports bar concept several times before we played that hand last September. The idea was to have the concept ‘limping in’ for our tourist season in spring, but the world had a different plan,” chef Ferguson explained. With the hit of the pandemic, amongst other reasons, the bottle shop portions of Jack’s arose.  “Originally, we grabbed on to the...

DEDHAM (CBS) – For one generous neighborhood in Dedham, Thursday nights mean one thing. “My good friend and neighbor said ‘let’s make this a thing!’ Now it’s become Thursday night Fontaine Flames!” said Patti Fontaine. The Fontaine family began making pizzas to feed essential workers and first responders. Then they started selling the pies to neighbors; since May, they have raised more than $3300 for local charities. “The Dedham food pantry, there’s a Dedham Covid relief fund we’ve been donating to. Black Lives Matter one week. The VA hospital,” said David Fontaine, of some of the organizations they have chosen. PASADENA (CBSLA) — In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, there have been shortages of toilet paper, hand sanitizer and coins, but now some pizza places are reporting a shortage of pepperoni and higher prices for cheese. “The price has gone up,” David Valian, owner of Big Mama’s and Papa’s Pizza, said. “I think since there’s like a meat shortage going around.” The thin slice of meat — a mix of pork and beef — is the number one pizza topping according to an industry resource, and its one that the popular Pasadena joint has run into issues keeping in stock. “A couple of weeks ago, we were having some trouble sourcing pepperoni,” Valian said. “We always have to go back and try to find more.” There’s no clear reason for the shortage, but the popular pizza topping is more labor intensive as workers have to mix beef and pork before slicing the mix thin — and meat packers are cutting back on the number of employees working at a time due to pandemic restrictions. But, despite the shortage, business at...
By ERIN BORMETT, Argus Leader SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Jon Oppold started Sunny’s Pizzeria with the intention of creating a locally owned staple in the neighborhood. Six months after opening, that focus on local is clear from the first step in the door. The idea behind Sunny’s unconventional location on a residential street was to give neighbors, especially the University of Sioux Falls students a few blocks over, a hangout to call their own. “The neighborhood has been great,” Oppold told the Argus Leader. “I’m a big believer in neighborhood community business. I remember growing up here in town and there used to be much more of that, and I think now is a good time to cultivate more of those things.” Unfortunately, the college crowd hasn’t been around as much as Oppold envisioned. Sunny’s opened in December just in time for students to leave for winter break. They returned in February for about a month before spring break and the coronavirus pandemic put a stop to all on-campus activity. Oppold’s instinct about the business opportunity wasn’t wrong, however,...
Photo via Tampa Club While an estimated 1.412 million Florida residents are still out of work due to the coronavirus pandemic, a local restaurant is now offering what they call “Tampa Bay’s most expensive pizza.” Arguably built for a 2018 Instagram influencer, the Tampa Club’s new pizza is covered in edible 24-karat gold leaf, black truffles, gold ossetra caviar, guyere cream sauce and costs a staggering $350. This incredibly tone deaf stunt food also takes 48 hours to prepare.  “I created this pizza because I wanted to put together my favorite luxurious flavors into one cheesy bite, said Tampa Club executive chef Erik Vigil in a press release. When asked if perhaps the timing of this new pizza was a little off, Tampa Club did not immediately respond.  The Tampa Club is located at 101 E. Kennedy Boulevard at the top of Bank of America Plaza in downtown Tampa.  Unfortunately, most of us won’t be able to try this elite creation, since the Tampa Club is private and membership is strictly invite-only. Still, nothing says luxury like eating literal gold during a...
