    NEWTOWN SQUARE (CBS) — Get ready to lace up your skates. A new ice skating rink is coming to Delaware County. Construction workers are busy transforming this empty lot on West Chester Pike in Newtown Square into a Winter Wonderland. There will be a rink and winter village where you can warm up with a hot drink or some food. The rink doesn’t have an opening date yet, but CBS3 is told it should be ready to go by mid-December.

The blaze broke out around noon at a unit on the 200 block of Chelsea Circle in Green Countrie Village, damaging a total of eight homes -- four severely, Newtown Square Fire chief Doug Everlos told Daily Voice. A firefighter removed an elderly man from one of the units, but he was not injured. Meanwhile, the fire climbed to two alarms as crews from several surrounding towns worked to contain it. The blaze was deemed under control around 1:35 p.m., the chief said. It was not clear exactly how many people were displaced, but at least four families, fire officials said. Mutual aid was provided by fire companies from Radnor, Berwyn, Broomall, Brookline, Media and Goshen. Paramedics form Main Line Health and Marple Township Ambulance Corps were at the scene.

    A driver crashed into a vacant building in Newtown Square Friday morning, authorities said. Fire crews responded to the 4800 block of West Chester Pike where they saw the severely damaged black SUV in the middle of a vacant building just before 9 a.m., according to the Newtown Square Fire Company. The driver was taken by EMS services for medical evaluation, authorities said. His status is unknown. There were no reported injuries in the building.
