It may be a new regime in town, but the pressure remains sky-high for Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins. After failing to qualify for the postseason, Minnesota enters 2022 at a crossroads. The Vikings have the talent to not only be a top-seven team in the NFC, but have a decent shot to win the division if the Green Bay Packers struggle. Should Minnesota have another trying year, it might necessitate the Vikings moving off Cousins entirely and undergoing a lengthy rebuilding process. If the Vikings want to make the playoffs this year, Cousins has to win these games with his arm.Minnesota Vikings: 3 games Kirk Cousins has to win with this arm3. Week 4: vs. New Orleans Saints (London, Sunday, Oct. 2)Even if the Vikings’ Week 4 game will be in London, they still need to find a way to beat the New Orleans Saints. Getty Kirk Cousins expressed a weariness with how aggressive he played against the Packers. Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins hung of the best performances of his career on the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. The 10th year veteran quarterback threw caution to the wind and made several spectacular throws against his better judgment — including a pass to Adam Thielen where Thielen nor Packers corner Rasul Douglas were looking his direction on the final drive of the game. Douglas bit on a comeback route while Thielen reacted to the early throw, turning his head and shifting his body upfield enough to catch the inside throw he took for a 26-yard gain that effectively won the game. The Kirk Cousins record in primetime games has been a running meme but, after a loss to Cooper Rush and the Cowboys, there’s a ton of truth to the meme. Whenever Kirk Cousins is on the field under the bright lights of primetime, the jokes on social media start flowing before he’s ever taken the field. It’s a reputation that has, at times, been unfair. However, the numbers don’t lie for the Minnesota Vikings quarterback, nor does the fact that he went on Sunday Night Football in Week 8 and was outplayed by Cowboys backup signal-caller Cooper Rush as Dallas used a late touchdown to get the win. Now, the meme-ification of Kirk Cousins in primetime is actually just the truth about what he’s done when in those situations.Kirk Cousins record in primetime games keeps getting worseWith the loss to Dallas, Cousins is now an abysmal 8-17 in primetime games, good for a winning percentage of 32. Getty Kirk Cousins said he is "at peace" with the risk of undergoing the 2021 season unvaccinated. Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins is confident he can avoid missing more time with the team after a five-day absence this week. Under NFL guidelines, Cousins was deemed a “high-risk” close contact with Kellen Mond, who tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, after the quarterbacks met in a room too small to safely socially distance. The “high-risk” close contact designation is reserved for only unvaccinated players, leaving those unvaccinated prone to missing more time this season. Cousins, who has shown no symptoms, produced six negative tests throughout the week but still had to wait the five-day period in respect to NFL protocols. The league has incentivized players getting vaccinated by reducing restrictions for vaccinated players through looser rules on social distancing, quarantine requirements, travel restrictions and mask wearing. Cousins revealed on Thursday that he would adhere to protocols this season —  essentially admitting he will remain unvaccinated and undergo the league’s strict guidelines for unvaccinated players. “Asked if his life would...
Getty Kirk Cousins has been the target of several failures by the Vikings in 2020. The Minnesota Vikings offensive line finished the season ranked as the third-worst pass-blocking unit in the NFL — a ranking that’s not far from how the line has performed in the Mike Zimmer era. He had an exceptional OL when they were healthy in Washington, aside from Spencer Long, and the OL there was run by a technician in Bill Callahan. When you watched the OL there things were intentional, every single...
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — For all the precision and production that Kirk Cousins has displayed with the Minnesota Vikings, the lack of late-game rallies have left them and their fans wanting more from their highly paid and scrutinized quarterback. Well, Cousins put a big checkmark in the crunch time box in his previous performance. Completing six of seven passes on a 75-yard drive capped by the go-ahead touchdown with 46 seconds left to beat Carolina 28-27 was just what the Vikings (5-6) needed to keep up in the chase for the NFC playoffs. “To always see Kirk go out there and succeed and silence the critics, it puts a smile on my face each and every week because I see the things he does in practice. I see the type of leader he is. We are glad to have him in this building,” running back Dalvin Cook said. “The things that are done in the past, I think it tends to carry over with him. I think it goes overlooked the plays he makes. When he plays that lights-out...
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — With league-leading production from running back Dalvin Cook and clever play-calling by offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak, the Minnesota Vikings helped Kirk Cousins get back in a groove this month after his rash of turnovers contributed to the team’s 1-5 start. Cousins wasn’t going to be able to just linger in the background for long, though. Chicago’s defense made that clear on Monday night, containing Cook with one of the best front-seven groups assembled in the NFL. Minnesota’s hyper-scrutinized quarterback went to work, delivering a clutch performance that was about far more than simply managing a 19-13 victory over the Bears. “I thought he played really fast, which is important for him. He was extremely accurate. He got the ball in the right places all night,” Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said. “I just felt like he did a really good job of handling what the defense was giving us.” Cook reached 96 rushing yards — he also had a modest 16 receiving yards — but needed 30 carries to get there. Most of those gains came after standout...

The win marked the first for Cousins on "Monday Night Football," as the nine-year veteran had been winless in his previous nine starts on Monday night.  Cousins, who left the field with the game ball in his hand, went 25 of 36 for 292 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. His performance was a big reason why Minnesota, after a 1-5 start, is now 4-5 after winning three straight games against divisional opponents.  "It was great to get a win," Cousins told ESPN's Lisa Salters after the game. "Needed that, but also, I got a hole to climb out of now. We gotta get a few...
Kirk Cousins actively makes the Vikings worse Minnesota has won two straight games after a brutal start, and it has a large bit to do with their commitment to the ground game. Dalvin Cook has gone off in the Vikings back-to-back victories, rushing for 163 yards against the Green Bay Packers and 203 yards against the Detroit Lions. Meanwhile, Cousins production has dropped due to a lack of reps, but he’s just fine with that. In fact, the Vikings should embrace this model of winning, rather than forcing a higher volume of throws for their high-priced QB. The Vikings won both games handily, though the Packers mounted a late-game comeback after Minnesota held a double digit advantage for much of the contest. The #Vikings have won back to back games and scored 62 combined points in them. Kirk Cousins has 24 completions, total, in those games. For comparison, Nick Foles had 36 completions on Week 9 alone. Is Kirk Cousins a prime-time player?   Opinions vary on the veteran Vikings quarterback, who will have another chance to prove it on “Sunday Night Football” against the Seahawks.   The Vikings are 1-3 – and Cousins’ monster contract that runs through the 2022 season will be a topic of conversation.   So will his track record in prime time. The results for Cousins are mixed when it comes to prime-time games between his stints in Washington and Minnesota – another layer to the conversation that revolves Cousins.   Sporting News looks inside the track record heading into Sunday’s game against the Seahawks to find out what is true and false. That includes a 3-8 record against winning teams since coming to the Vikings in 2018.   The Vikings are 19-15-1 with Cousins since signing him to an $84 million contract in 2018. Week 2 is the point in the NFL season where you start to get an idea of what a team is made of. Since 1990, more than 60 percent of teams that start 2-0 make the playoffs, as opposed to about 12 percent of teams that start 0-2. That doesn’t mean overreactions don’t still happen. Vikings QB Kirk Cousins is the textbook example of a player who excels when the circumstances around him are ideal, and struggles when they are not. Cousins had a career-high 107.4 passer rating in 2019, and the Vikings went to the playoffs on the strength of a stout defense, excellent running game and two dynamic receivers in Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen. In other words, the circumstances were ideal. The Vikings’ first two games showed this year may be an entirely...

Kirk Cousins had the best season of his eight-year career in 2019, but it sure wasn’t because of anything he did against Green Bay. The Vikings quarterback had his two worst games of last season against the Packers. In a 21-16 loss at Lambeau Field in Week 2, he completed 14 of 32 passes for 230 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions and a 52.9 passer rating. In a 23-10 home loss in Week 16, he completed 16 of 31 passes for 122 yards, one touchdown, one interception and a 58.8 passer rating. You can bet he has given those those two losses much thought heading into Sunday’s opener against the Packers at U.S. Bank Stadium. “I think you’re just aware of where we came up short,” Cousins said Wednesday. “You’re aware of how you need to be better. I think they did a great job defensively, and we’ve got to have a great plan, and then we have to go execute that plan. … We can’t afford to waste plays or make mistakes or turn the ball...

Kirk Cousins may disregard science, but he isn’t going to ignore his responsibility to his team. Backtracking on his recently revealed, indefensible stance, downplaying the seriousness of the COVID-19 pandemic and suggesting masks are “stupid,” the Vikings quarterback said Wednesday that one of the reasons he’ll practice social distancing and other coronavirus protocols is so that he won’t have to miss any games during the upcoming season. “Admittedly I probably wasn’t as clear as I would have liked to have been,” Cousins said, referencing his comments on a podcast with Kyle Brandt. “But what I wanted to say then, and what I would echo again now, is that while the virus does not give me a great amount of personal fear, there’s still great reason for me to engage in wearing a mask and social distancing and washing my hands as frequently as I can and following protocols that have been set in place. Obviously, to be respectful and considerate of other people, which is very important, but then also to be available for all 16 games this fall...
NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA - JANUARY 05: Kirk Cousins #8 of the Minnesota Vikings reacts against the New Orleans Saints during a game at the Mercedes Benz Superdome on January 05, 2020 in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Photo by Jonathan Bachman/Getty Images) Kirk Cousins is an easy punching bag at times, but Pro Football Focus graded him quite well late in games last year. For the Minnesota Vikings, less of Kirk Cousins was more in 2019. After setting a career-high with 606 pass attempts in 2019, A Gary Kubiak-influenced offense yielded 444 pass attempt in 15 games (Week 17 was meaningless for the Vikings), and Cousins posted a career-best 107.4 passer rating with 26 touchdowns and just six interceptions. Minnesota earned a playoff spot with a 10-6 record last year, then they beat the New Orleans Saints in the Wild Card Round. Cousins offered a rebuttal to his detractors in overtime of that game, with a clutch deep ball to Adam Thielen followed by a touchdown pass to Kyle Rudolph on the game-winning drive in overtime. The Vikings gave Cousins a two-year...
