thesavannahbananas.com The Savannah Bananas have announced a book release this month. “Fans First” is written by Jesse Cole, author, founder of Fans First Entertainment, and owner of the Savannah Bananas. Book description from Savannah Bananas: The book shares the behind the peel story of the Bananas and how two words changed everything for our organization. Everything we do is unconventional. None of it should work. But it does because of two words that changed everything. “Fans First” became more than a motto. It became a way of life for our organization. We became fanatical about our fans. Our mission was to put them first in everything we do. Thinking back to how we started on October 5, 2015, we’re blown away on how far we’ve come. We were just kids running a team and were handed the keys to the ballpark and told “Good luck.” We were expected to fail and we did at first. We tried to fit in and be like everyone else. We marketed like...

When it comes to Kyrie Irving and Boston fans, there’s a whole lotta gray area. That’s not a particularly strong way to start a column or hook you into an opinion, but, as with most things involving Kyrie, abstruseness rules the conversation. Here was my initial reaction to Irving flipping birds and cussing: Kyrie Irving is right. He should be allowed to extend his middle finger. He shouldn’t be lampooned and fined a maximum $50,000 for the behind-your-head double-bird disguised as a head-scratch, a maneuver we learned in middle school as a stealth response to those whispers from behind. It’s unfair to expect a human being, no matter their level of compensation, to endure taunts and vulgarities without a response. If the fans can spew whatever they desire, they should anticipate equal verbal or gestured reciprocation, without punishment from the NBA. It’s the only major sports league in this country where fans are so close they can heckle at the volume of a casual conversation. And we know those Boston fans are a nasty and vindictive bunch. They even managed...
Anti-trans measures in Texas are going from bad to worse. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott is no ally to LGBTQ+ people, but his decision to essentially make a nonbinding opinion from Attorney General Ken Paxton the word of law is decidedly cruel. As Daily Kos covered at the time, the Republican Texas attorney general wrote an opinion—which is essentially an analysis based on his interpretation of existing law—that categorizes gender-affirming health care for trans youth as child abuse. This goes against standard science and medicine from a number of major medical groups, mind you. Abbott then directed state agencies to abide by this opinion and investigate families who seek gender-affirming care for trans youth, like hormone therapy and puberty blockers. One hospital in Texas has already paused its treatments out of concern for physicians facing legal ramifications. And one family in Texas says they’ve already been investigated by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS). What makes this particularly stunning, truly, is that Paxton had dinner with this very family, in this very home, just six years ago, as reported by...
Former President Donald Trump speaks to supporters during a rally at the Iowa State Fairgrounds on Oct. 09, 2021 in Des Moines, Iowa. One would think leading an insurrection against the nation you serve would represent an all-time low for a president, but former president Donald Trump continues to stoop to new lows. This time, he defiled the memory of the first Black national security adviser a day after his untimely death of COVID-19 complications. “Wonderful to see Colin Powell, who made big mistakes on Iraq and famously, so-called weapons of mass destruction, be treated in death so beautifully by the Fake News Media,” Trump said in a statement on Tuesday. “Hope that happens to me someday. He was a classic RINO, if even that, always being the first to attack other Republicans. He made plenty of mistakes, but anyway, may he rest in peace!” xGiven the chance to be gracious about someone’s death, or say nothing at all, Trump takes a decidedly different route pic.twitter.com/HMgFAiiRcK— Maggie Haberman (@maggieNYT) October 19, 2021 This is coming from a man who did worse than sit...
A new model suggests the solar system is surrounded by a gigantic magnetic tunnel. The proposal comes from University of Toronto astronomer Jennifer West, who is basing the hypothesis on two structures in the sky: The North Polar Spur and the Fan Region. After building a computer model, West believes the structures, made of rope-like filaments, sit 350 light-years from Earth and are about 1,000 light-years long. The structures, first observed in the 1960s, were initially documented as being separate, but West and her colleagues found the two form a connection that 'looks like a tunnel around our solar system,' according to a press release. West and her team provide a simple example to explain the idea: 'A curving tunnel, with lines formed by the tunnel lights and road lane markers, forms a similar geometry to the proposed model of the North Polar Spur and Fan Region.' 'If we were to look up in the sky we would see this tunnel-like structure in just about every direction we looked – that is, if we had eyes that could see radio...
It's nearly time to celebrate another year of television. Each year, the Television Academy awards the best comedies, dramas, made-for-TV movies, miniseries and more with Emmy Awards, which are widely recognized as the industry's highest honor. For years now, awards shows like the Emmys have declined in viewership despite recognition for massively popular shows like "Game of Thrones" and "Schitt's Creek" and the promise of a star-studded event wearing expensive outfits.  It remains to be seen whether this year will break the low-ratings curse despite being the second year that will no doubt look at least somewhat different due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. NEW YORK (AP) — Filmmaker Cary Fukunaga has been waiting more than a year and a half for the biggest movie of his career, the James Bond film “No Time to Die,” to arrive in theaters. It has been a strange and surreal wait. Months before the much-delayed movie is even released on Oct. 8, the film’s theme song, by Billie Eilish, already won a Grammy. “I had a dream last night where Sam Mendes was there,” Fukunaga said in a recent interview, referring to the director of the previous two Bond movies. “We were on vacation on some frozen lake. He was done with Bond films. And he was like, ‘Oh, you finished one. Now you get a break.’ Then we started, like, water skiing on a frozen lake.” “It was a weird dream,” says Fukunaga. The fall movie season — usually a reliable rhythm and cozy autumn comfort — is, like much of the past 18 months, a little disorienting. On the way are movies once planned to open as far back as April 2020, like “No Time...

CDC recommends masks for vaccinated people in high transmission areas. What does that mean? Biden meets with Belarusian opposition leader at the White House An incomplete list of things that make the 2020 Tokyo Olympics hard to love: The fact that they are happening at all, given the ongoing coronavirus pandemic; the pleas from health experts and the Japanese public that the organizers not stage a superspreader event at this time; the athletes disqualified over dusty, outdated policies; the knowledge that some competitors are feeling their mental health crumble under the weight of untenable pressure. It has been a real slog of a sports show so far, and to top it all off, we now have … relentless, scorching heat that may make these the hottest and most humid Olympics in history. © Clive Brunskill/Getty Images Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic tries to escape Tokyo’s extreme heat Clive Brunskill/Getty Images “It’s almost like you are in a sauna or something like that,” Makoto Yokohari, a professor in the department of urban planning at the University of Tokyo and an...
New Jets QB of the future Zach Wilson, selected with the No. 2-overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft Thursday, kicks off his Jets career with a Q&A with Post columnist Steve Serby. Q: Do you believe you’re the best quarterback in this draft? A: Absolutely. And everyone should. If you’re a competitor, and you truly believe that football is a mindset, and everything is about confidence, yeah, everyone should think that they’re the best quarterback. Q: Why was picking you over Trey Lance, Justin Fields and Mac Jones the right move? A: I think it’s the trust and belief the coaches had in me, their plan, what they’re trying to do as a team fitting me, and they have that confidence in me to give everything I have to make sure we can improve as a team, and I think I’m right on with that plan and I’m excited to get going with it. Q: Fill in the blank: Zach Wilson will be successful because … A: He gives it everything he has every day. Q: Describe the pressure...
By SARAH SKIDMORE SELL, AP Personal Finance Writer It’s the time of year to start thinking about taxes — but the upcoming filing season is going to be a bit trickier for many Americans due to rampant unemployment, working from home and general upheaval due to COVID-19. Here are a few pandemic specific conditions — good and bad — to be aware of. ___ UNEMPLOYMENT Unemployment benefits are taxable income, which tax experts say may surprise some filers. Workers are not required to have federal taxes withheld from their benefit payments. While people have the option to have the tax withheld, many do not. It’s worth noting that unemployment benefits are all subject to federal taxes but not all states tax it. Taxpayers who unintentionally do not include unemployment income on their taxes could face a tax bill, penalties or interest charged by the IRS, said Mark Steber, Jackson Hewitt’s chief tax information officer. The drop in income from job loss could mean some households are eligible for deductions and credits that they did not qualify for in the past,...

DENVER (CBS4) – It’s the Friday afternoon before Election Day, and 64 journalists at CBS4 are gathered on a Zoom call to review plans for the big night. There’s a nervous energy. (credit: CBS) “This is unlike anything we’ve ever done,” Kristine Strain tells the group. Kristine is the Assistant News Director and leader of our election planning. She told me, “Planning election coverage in a pandemic has made me reflect on our purpose. With no ballrooms, no balloon drops, and no boisterous victory speeches what role do we play for our viewers? We are there to give results. We are there for analysis of the numbers as they roll in. We are there to explain what a yes or no vote on an amendment will mean going forward.” Kristine Strain (credit: CBS) One thing hasn’t changed: Election Night will involve hours of coverage presented on a variety of platforms. Kristine walks us through the plan — special newscasts on CBS4, two updates every hour during CBS News coverage, continuous coverage on our streaming channel CBSN Denver, three hours of...
DENVER (CBS4) – The first day of fall will include unusually warm temperatures statewide. But it’s nothing compared to the heat coming to Colorado later this week. The autumnal equinox occurred at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday and marks the time the sun is directly over the equator. After today, the nights will be longer than the days and this will be true until the spring equinox next March. Tuesday will also be the sixth day in a row with temperatures reaching at least the 80s along the Front Range. Usually the Denver area is in the 70s during the second half of September. There is also a small chance for light rain showers almost anywhere in the state during the afternoon and evening on Tuesday. A rumble of thunder is also possible but not likely. (source: CBS) There will also be considerably less wildfire smoke in most of the state on Tuesday compared to recent days. Air quality in the Denver metro area has improved to “moderate” and there are no air pollution advisories due to smoke for the first...
Her name is Bronwen Adams but everybody calls her Bronnie and for the last 40 years she was Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s interior decorator and all-round go-to person. A mutual friend told me Bronnie had some stories to share about RBG that those who only know her as an icon would get a kick out of. Spoiler alert, there’s nothing here that will make you like Ginsburg less, or reveal a private self that she’d kept hidden. Everything Bronnie revealed in our phone conversation strikes me as totally in character with the woman who late in life achieved rap star status, and who is being mourned by millions. Bronnie met Ginsburg when she was confirmed for a seat on the U.S. District Court in D.C. in 1980, and would be moving from New York to Washington. Bronnie and her then partner met with Ginsburg in New York to present what they thought the newly minted judge would like. “She said ‘how much, and when will it be ready?’ Bronnie recalls “She didn’t change one thing that we were proposing. The sofa...
