New York (CNN Business)Rocket Lab, which aims to launch satellites into space quickly and cheaply, just used a helicopter catch part of a rocket in mid-air. In a mission labeled "There and Back Again," the 25-year-old space company successfully performed a mid-air helicopter capture of a falling rocket booster after a launch for the first time. The Electron rocket, Rocket Lab's small rocket capable of launching objects into Earth's orbit, took off at 6:50 pm ET (10:50 am local time) in New Zealand for a commercial mission. The mission deployed 34 satellite payloads for a number of commercial operators, bringing the total number of Electron-launched satellites in space to 146. Rocket Lab has conducted 25 launches with 3 failures since 2018.Rocket boosters are used to push payloads up through the Earth's atmosphere and into orbit, and in this Rocket Lab launch, the booster was jettisoned after the first two and a half minutes of flight. After separating from the booster, the Electron rocket continued to orbit to fulfill the satellite deployment while the booster fell back to Earth at nearly...
WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday, the White House announced, underscoring the persistence of the highly contagious virus even as the U.S. eases restrictions in a bid to revert to pre-pandemic normalcy. The White House said Tuesday that Harris tested positive on both rapid and a PCR tests, and said she “has exhibited no symptoms.” Harris will isolate at her residence but continue to work remotely, and would only return to the White House once she tests negative for the virus. Harris, 57, received her first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine weeks before taking office and a second dose just days after Inauguration Day in 2021. She received a booster shot in late October and an additional booster on April 1. Fully vaccinated and boosted people have a high degree of protection against serious illness and death from COVID-19, particularly from the most common and highly transmissible omicron variant. The White House said neither President Joe Biden nor first lady Jill Biden were considered a “close contact” of Harris in recent days....

Cheers and Jeers is a weekday post from the great state of Maine. Late Night Snark: April Fools Edition "The House committee investigating the Capitol riot said that Trump's White House phone records have a seven-hour gap on January 6th. Seven hours? I don’t know if anyone is a fan of the show Dateline, but if your phone records are missing even ten minutes, you're guilty. Even the ghost of Richard Nixon is like, I don’t think you can do that."  —Jimmy Fallon "Trump was open about his desire to have the Supreme Court stay in power—he said it repeatedly. There was even a case where Trump sued to block the National Archives from releasing any records related to January 6th. And the only justice to side with Trump in the 8-1 decision was Clarence Thomas. He sided with Trump in the case to block the release of records that could've potentially implicated his own wife. That is a slap in the face to the Constitution. And even if it was to protect your wife, slapping is never okay!"—Seth Meyers...
(CNN)The White House said President Joe Biden will receive an additional Covid-19 booster shot if his doctor recommends it, after the US Food and Drug Administration expanded emergency authorization of second Pfizer or Moderna booster doses for adults ages 50 and older as early as four months after their first booster vaccine."Obviously, if his doctor recommends that he receive a fourth booster then he would, but he'll make that decision in consultation with his doctor," White House communications director Kate Bedingfield said during the White House press briefing. Earlier Tuesday, the FDA expanded the emergency use authorization of the Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines to allow adults ages 50 and older to get a second booster as early as four months after their first booster dose of any Covid-19 vaccine. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention added that adults who got Johnson & Johnson's vaccine as their primary and first booster shots at least four months prior may now get an additional booster of Pfizer/BioNTech or Moderna's vaccines. The move extends the availability of additional boosters to healthy older...
The Biden administration has approved a fourth COVID-19 shot for those 50 and over, but it remains to be seen whether or not President Joe Biden will take advantage. Both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are over age 50 and are now eligible for a fourth shot, but White House director of communications Kate Bedingfield said she wasn't sure yet if either would do so. FDA AUTHORIZES SECOND BOOSTERS OF MRNA COVID-19 VACCINES FOR ADULTS OVER 50 "I can speak to the president, who will make this decision in consultation with his doctor," she said. "Obviously, if his doctor recommends that he receive a fourth booster, then he would, but he'll make that decision in consultation with his doctor." Bedingfield said she'd have to check regarding a fourth shot for Harris. Biden received his first booster shot on camera in September. The FDA's authorization is for a second booster shot at least four months after the first, meaning the president again checks off the criteria to get jabbed again. CLICK HERE TO READ...
The FDA said Tuesday that people age 50 and older may get a second Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 booster shot four months after their first as the highly contagious omicron subvariant BA.2 was reported to account for more than half of U.S. cases. The Food and Drug Administration also said those who have had organ transplants or otherwise have compromised immunity may get a second booster by Pfizer if they are age 12 or older or by Moderna if they are age 18 or older. The news comes as he Centers for Disease Control and prevention reported Tuesday that BA.2 — the so-called “stealth” variant blamed for sharp increases in COVID-19 cases in Europe and Asia — now accounts for 54.9% of genetically sequenced cases in the U.S., up from a revised 39% a week earlier. It was just 1% the first week of February. Some experts have warned that a BA.2 threshold of more than half of U.S. cases could be the tipping point for driving a new wave of infections. New cases have been declining since January but...
MODERNA will trial its Omicron booster jab on 3,000 people in the UK. It will become the first major UK study to use a vaccine not based on the original Wuhan strain of the virus. 1US company Moderna will be the first to trial its Omicron booster jab in BritainCredit: PA Health Secretary Sajid Javid said: “The UK is a world leader when it comes to the research and development of vaccines and medicines. “It’s fantastic to see these capabilities being put to good use, with almost 3,000 people expected to take part in this important clinical trial. "I urge anyone eligible to take part in this vital research and play their part in protecting the country for years to come as we learn to live with Covid-19." The Moderna trial will test the new jab as a third or fourth dose and will be run from 29 hospitals all over England, Scotland and Wales. Healthy volunteers aged 16 and older will be eligible for the trial as long as they have not had Covid since November 2021. They must...
The massive 400ft Starship rocket has been assembled on a launch platform by SpaceX, ahead of an announcement on the future of the heavy lift launcher tonight. Founder Elon Musk announced his plan to reveal details about the future of the massive, and fully re-usable spacecraft, starting at 21:00 ET, from Boca Chica, the home of the SpaceX Starship test facility in Texas.  It will be the first update on the vehicle in almost three years, and while details haven't been revealed over what Musk will say, it will likely include details of the first orbital test launch for the next generation rocket. Starship, which will return humans to the lunar surface and could one day ferry more than 100 people a time to Mars, is set to make its first orbital flight in March.  The latest development in Boca Chica saw the firm stack a two-stage Starship rocket - with the upper stage being lifted on to the Super Heavy booster using a trio of robotic arms attached to the 480ft launch tower. This is only the second time the full Starship...
Marin first responders will have to be fully vaccinated and boosted for COVID-19 to continue working with the public beginning April 15. The order, issued by the Marin County public health office, applies to law enforcement officers, firefighters, medics and probation officers. First responders will no longer be allowed to avoid vaccinations by getting tested regularly. The only exception will be for those who qualify for a medical or religious exemption. The mandate, announced Wednesday, comes as public health officials say they are managing “multiple preventable outbreaks in vulnerable, higher-risk settings.” “These outbreaks have been amplified by contact with unboosted staff, an inadequate testing cadence and a highly contagious variant,” said Dr. Lisa Santora, the county’s deputy public health officer. Active outbreaks in the county include one at the Marin County Jail; nine at skilled nursing centers; nine at residential care centers for the elderly; and 19 at other group living sites, according to the county. As of Tuesday, there were 91 patients and 86 staff members at Marin long-term care centers who were infected with the virus. Infections at...

BERLIN (AP) — Germany’s independent vaccination advisory panel said Thursday it is recommending a second vaccine booster shot for people aged 70 and above, among others particularly at risk from COVID-19. In a draft recommendation, the panel also advocated the extra shot for residents of nursing homes, people with immunodeficiency aged 5 and above, and staff at medical and nursing care facilities. It said that the at-risk groups should get the second booster three months at the earliest after the first, and health sector staff should receive it after six months. It pointed to data showing that the protection provided by the first booster against the now-dominant omicron variant wanes after a few months, particularly for the highest-risk groups. The panel, known by its German acronym STIKO, said it isn’t recommending a further shot for people who caught COVID-19 after their first booster. Official figures show that at least 53.6% of the German population has received a booster shot. In all, 74.2% have received a full first round of vaccination and 75.9% have received at least one shot. Germany’s...
First responders will have another month to get a COVID-19 booster shot, Marin’s public health department said this week. The deadline to get a booster has been extended to March 1 to allow law enforcement, emergency medical services and temporary disaster shelter workers a chance to get the shot amid high demand. Slots for a vaccination appointment in Marin have been scarce during the omicron surge, the county public health department said in an announcement Monday. Workers must show proof of a booster by March 1 or submit to weekly surveillance testing, per a public health order issued in September and updated last month. The deadline was Jan. 28. A state mandate required health care facility workers receive a third shot by Feb. 1. “Our clinics were solidly full during that time with appointments filling up quickly and in advance of the date of the clinic,” county spokeswoman Laine Hendricks said. “It was only last week that people could obtain a same day or walk-in appointment. “Based on agency feedback, and understanding that our first responders may not have had...
By Anokhi Saklecha | CNN The first participants have been vaccinated in a Phase 1 clinical trial of an experimental HIV vaccine that utilizes Moderna’s mRNA technology, the company announced last week. The trial, titled IAVI G002, is being conducted in partnership with IAVI, a nonprofit scientific research organization. It is testing a vaccine that delivers HIV-specific antigens to the body with the goal of inducing an immune response. These antigens were initially developed by researchers at IAVI and Scripps Research, led by Dr. William Schief. In a “proof-of-concept” trial last year, the research team found the HIV antigens produced the desired immune response in 97% of participants. The current trial builds on the previous one by testing the primary version of the vaccine and also a booster version, and by employing Moderna’s mRNA technology, which was previously used to create a successful Covid-19 vaccine. “We are tremendously excited to be advancing this new direction in HIV vaccine design with Moderna’s mRNA platform. The search for an HIV vaccine has been long and challenging, and having new tools in terms...

MILLIONS of people across the country are suffering from ‘vaccination fatigue’ and could refuse to have any more jabs to fight the virus, according to a new study. Take-up of the Covid booster vaccine has slowed since the start of the year, while new research shows that one in five people say they are fed up with vaccinations and don’t want them any more. 1Millions of people across the country are suffering from ‘vaccination fatigue’ Despite the massive success of the country’s vaccination programme, more than half the 2,000 people questioned for a study by Well Pharmacy, Britain’s leading independent pharmacy chain, say they are now concerned about the effect that having so many Covid jabs will have on their body. As the Omicron variant appears to have peaked and Plan B restrictions are lifted, more than 20 per cent of Brits now believe Covid is on the way out, while 44 per cent say it is just something we will have to live with in the future. But if things do take a turn for the worse, two thirds...

(CNN)Moderna announced Wednesday that the first participant has been dosed in the company's Phase 2 clinical trial of a coronavirus vaccine booster shot that is specific to the Omicron variant. "We are reassured by the antibody persistence against Omicron at six months after the currently authorized 50 μg booster of mRNA-1273. Nonetheless, given the long-term threat demonstrated by Omicron's immune escape, we are advancing our Omicron-specific variant vaccine booster candidate and we are pleased to begin this part of our Phase 2 study," CEO Stéphane Bancel said in a news release. "We are also evaluating whether to include this Omicron-specific candidate in our multivalent booster program."Moderna promises to share its data from the trial with public health leaders so they can make evidence-based decisions on the best booster strategy against the coronavirus going forward.
