A SUNSPOT on the solar surface just erupted and caused radio blackouts around the Atlantic Ocean. Space weather experts have had their eye on the solar flare that shot out of that sunspot and it slammed into Earth on May 10. 1The Sun emits solar flares fairly oftenCredit: Getty The experts at SpaceWeather.com said: ""Mixed-up" sunspot AR3006 exploded on May 10th (1355 UT), producing an intense X1.5-class solar flare. "NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the extreme ultraviolet flash. "Radiation from the flare ionized the top of Earth's atmosphere, causing a shortwave radio blackout around the Atlantic Ocean. "Radio transmissions at frequencies below ~30 MHz were attenuated for more than an hour after the flare." Black holes are some of the strangest objects in space. These balls of dense matter are scattered throughout the Milky Way and have gravitational fields so powerful, nothing can escape their gaping maws—not even light. While we can’t see a black hole head-on like we would a star or a planet, we’ve learned a lot by observing how they affect the fabric of space around them. Now astronomers have discovered something about these cosmic enigmas that’s upended our understanding of them. In a new study published May 5 in The Astrophysical Journal, an international team of astrophysicists found that black holes can flip the direction of their magnetic fields. This spontaneous reversal was noticed when a black hole in a galaxy 236 million light-years away suddenly got 100 times brightener before simmering back down. This discovery could mean that black holes having a much more dynamic nature than previously thought—and may even help us find more black holes exhibiting the same behavior. When a black hole sucks in gas and dust from galaxies around it, these materials swirl and fall...
This Sunday, you can walk on to the San Francisco Giants baseball field for free, without a ticket. There won’t be any baseball players there. But you just might learn something. For the first time since 2019 due to the easing of the COVID pandemic, the Bay Area Science Festival, the largest educational event in Northern California, is returning with in-person activities. Organizers expect 25,000 people to attend events starting Thursday and continuing until April 30. The two main events are at from 11 am to 4 pm Sunday at Oracle Park in San Francisco, and 11 am to 4 pm on Saturday April 30 at the Cal State University East Bay Hayward campus. Dozens of major institutions, including Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCSF, museums, park districts and large companies, will run hands-on exhibits at locations around the Bay Area. Featured at the ballpark on Sunday: a Mars Rover, mini water tornadoes, robots and exhibits about how vaccines work. Organizers say the event is needed for kids now more than ever, as the world confronts challenges from climate change to new...

This is the horrifying moment a raging horse mauled a helpless sheep to death and repeatedly sent it flying through the air. The video, which has recently re-emerged online, prompted horrified reactions from viewers as the rampaging creature hurled the sheep around and stamped on its body. In the clip, filmed at an unidentified location, two men tentatively approach in a bid to calm the bay horse, but it continues circling the sheep and will not let them get near. Viewers were left shocked by horrifying footage of a raging horse attacking a sheep in a field A man tentatively approaches in a bid to calm the bay horse, but it continues circling the sheep and hurls the limp body through the air At one stage in the clip, viewers can clearly see the blood-soaked wool of the sheep around its head and neck.   And as the video nears an end, the horse tramples over the sheep's lifeless body and flings it through the air again like a ragdoll. Elon Musk firmly believes that “putting all the eggs in one basket” is not worth it. That is, mankind should leave Earth and begin the expansion between the planets. Billionaire gives Mars to colonization. The choice may be very good, but people should continue to live on better equipped sites. After all, the absence of a magnetic field makes it difficult to deform the red planet until its atmosphere “flows” into space. Read the title Following the life of a crater on Mars: An important experiment began in the Israeli desert This is the landscape of Mars / Photo by NASA Mars Curiosity Creating the magnetic field of Mars The Earth’s magnetic field is created by the dynamo effect (magnetic dynamo) in the nucleus, where the convection of iron alloys creates a geomagnetic field. Mars is smaller and cooler than our planet and a magnetic dynamo formation is not expected. But it can be created artificially. To provide a magnetic field for Mars, a powerful stream of charged particles is needed inside or around the planet. The first option was...
Getty Dan Campbell screams on the sidelines during a Lions loss to the Eagles. The Detroit Lions had a dismal performance against the Philadelphia Eagles, dropping an ugly 44-6 contest that was seemingly over by halftime given how things were going. Most of the afternoon, the Lions weren’t characterized by elite play, and their coach noticed that. While Dan Campbell did take the blame for what occurred on the field, he also took time to notice a player who did not get dragged down by what was going on around him. Much of this season, Campbell has not been shy about giving credit to linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin multiple times. After Detroit’s ugly loss to Philadelphia, it happened again. Campbell singled out Reeves-Maybin as one of his players who gets it and continues to fight on the field no matter the circumstance of the game. After the game speaking to the media on Sunday, October 31, Campbell singled...

A powerful solar storm is due to hit Earth today and could cause havoc for power grids, weather agencies have warned.  The UK's Met Office and the US's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have forecasted a coronal mass ejection (CME) – a massive expulsion of plasma from the Sun's corona (its outermost layer) at around 12pm EST (5pm BST) today.  Possible effects of the solar storm, caused by the CME, are power grid fluctuations and orientation irregularities for spacecraft in the form of 'increased drag' on low-Earth orbiters.   The aurora – a natural light display in Earth's sky, also known as the Northern Lights – may also be visible as low as New York in the US and the north of England in the UK.  A solar or geomagnetic storm is a major disturbance of Earth's magnetosphere - the area around Earth controlled by the planet's magnetic field - often caused by CMEs. Getty Dan Campbell yells on the field during a Packers game in 2021. The Detroit Lions have started yet another season 0-2, and for some, that might mean doubt is starting to creep in for the team early in a new season. Is there a “Same Old Lions” collapse situation brewing for this edition of the team? While fans might want to project that as playing out, Dan Campbell and the coaching staff are doing a quality job of preaching against it. After a tough 35-17 defeat against the Green Bay Packers, Campbell was asked point-blank about the infamous term and how he plans to defend against it. The latest Lions news straight to your inbox! Mary-Kate Olsen Places 3rd in Horseback Riding Competition After Disqualifying Will J.Lo and Ben buy one of these dream homes? © Provided by NBC Sports Replay Video SETTINGS OFF HD HQ SD LO Skip Ad If you told someone that Jets quarterback Zach Wilson would throw three interceptions in the first half of Sunday’s game against the Patriots, that person would likely predict that New England would have a huge lead going into the break. That has not turned out to be the case at MetLife Stadium. The Patriots turned Wilson’s first two interceptions into 10 points, but they got nothing after the third and the Jets defense has mostly kept the Patriots under wraps. As a result, the home team only trails 13-3 after a Patriots field goal just before the end of the second quarter. It’s the second straight week that Wilson has struggled in the first half. He was able to turn things around in the second half of that loss to the Panthers and the Jets would love to see a similar rebound from the...
An FSU football player actually proposed on the field after his team lost to Jacksonville State. On today’s episode of how things are going for FSU football under head coach Mike Norvell, one of his players got down on one knee to propose to his girlfriend after the Seminoles were upset on the final play of the game by FCS Jacksonville State. Yes, you read that correctly, and we have photo evidence of it happening. While he may have planned to do this all along, you cannot ask the love of your life for her hand in marriage after your team lost to Jacksonville State at home. This is not the football program the late Bobby Bowden built. Somehow, someway, this strange timing of commitment makes Willie Taggart look good. Let’s just hope she said yes, or this is the worst day of his entire life. FSU player proposing on the field with Jacksonville St still celebrating in the background. (Photo Credit: KDKA) Then came that fateful day. Lambert is a journalist and was covering everything unfolding. He was brought out to the site on his family’s land three weeks later. “You could still smell the jet fuel. So right off the bat, that was a big-time reminder of what...
OSWEGO, Ill. (WLS) -- Andrew Schultz began the school year with no friends, and lunchtime was particularly difficult. However, that all changed after his mom took to social media to ask for help."Tears of sadness that I wept for my son and now just filled of joy for him. I'm so happy for him," said Lisa Schultz. Now, that mother's desperate plea for her son with autism turned his lunchroom loneliness into a field of dreams filled with new friends."They were, like, the best people who I've ever met in my life," said the Oswego East junior, referring to the players on the high school sophomore football team. That connection Andrew made was the answer to his mother's greatest hope."I basically went in prayer and said, 'God, send Andrew one friend,'" Lisa said. "He just said that he was sitting in the cafeteria by himself and just completely alone."She was heartbroken, so Lisa reached out on an Oswego Moms social media page pleading for someone to help."I just became desperate for my son," she said. The response started with one girl joining Andrew for...
