MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — As Minnesota approaches the second anniversary of COVID’s arrival in the state, the virus continues its downward decline. Since reaching a peak during the omicron variant’s spread at the start of the year, weekly new cases, percent positivity rates, and other indicating factors of the virus’s spread have dropped each subsequent week. The most recent data shows the state’s percent positivity rate dropping below 5% for the first time since August. READ MORE: Bill With Bipartisan Support Would Eliminate Out-Of-Pocket Costs For Advanced Breast Cancer Screenings“If you look at the rates, at the percent positivity and what’s called the case rate, they are at a great level,” said Dr. George Morris, COVID-19 incident commander at CentraCare. As the virus approaches its two-year mark, Morris says he never initially anticipated Minnesotans would deal with it for so long. “These serial waves, repeated waves were not really anticipated,” he said. Instead, the virus has taken a trajectory similar to the 1918 influenza outbreak in America, a slow burn with a series of waves, each slightly less deadly but more...
To mark the 60th anniversary of Mercury 7 astronaut John Glenn's historic orbit of the Earth, a photography expert has remastered footage from his flight. The images show Glenn at key stages of the mission in detail never seen before, thanks to processing and remastering transfers of the flight film by British science writer, Andrew Saunders, who is producing a book on early American spaceflight. He regularly posts photos on Instagram from this iconic era of human space travel, ahead of the release of Apollo Remastered in September.  Glenn was a member of the legendary NASA Mercury 7 group of astronauts, becoming the first American to orbit the Earth on February 20, 1962.  Saunders took footage from the capsule, supplied by Stephen Slater, archive producer of the Apollo 11 movie, and stacked each frame in a similar way to astronomers when creating beautiful views of space. 'The result is these images of photo-like quality for the first time - despite the film being 60-year-old small format 'movie' film,' he told DailyMail.com. Glenn has been waiting for over two hours...

Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai has claimed the international concern around her safety and well-being is based on 'an enormous misunderstanding' in her first interview with an independent publication since she vanished from view last year. Peng has been the subject of frenzied discussion around the world following a social media post in November in which she wrote that Zhang Gaoli, the former vice premier, had forced her to have sex. That message quickly disappeared and Peng has only been seen subsequently on occasions closely managed by the Chinese government, heightening concern around her safety. Now, in her first interview beyond state media, she has reiterated that there was no sexual assault. A search is underway near the east side of the Dumbarton Bridge for a Stanford nurse who went missing earlier this week. Michael Odell, 27, was reported missing Tuesday, and his vehicle was later found near the east side of the bridge, said Lt. Giorgio Chevez of the East Bay Regional Park District Police Department, which took the missing person’s report. Further details about the case — including the circumstances of Odell’s disappearance, and whether foul play is suspected to be a factor — have not been released by authorities leading the search for him. Curtis Johanssen, a close friend who has since helped organize several searches, said Odell was last seen early Tuesday morning at Stanford Hospital, where he was working an overnight shift as a traveling nurse in a neurological intensive care unit. His car was later found around 8 a.m. by the Dumbarton Bridge toll plaza in Fremont, Johanssen said. As the world mourns the loss of Betty White, who died Dec. 31 at age 99, one Texas animal sanctuary is honoring her legacy in a unique way. It named its newest foal after the "Golden Girls" great. "Betty White was a substantial supporter of the Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue for over 16 years," Mark S. Meyers, executive director of the Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue, told Fox News. "She was an incredible advocate for animals around the world. She was a great loss on so many levels." BETTY WHITE 'DIED OF NATURAL CAUSES' AT AGE 99 On Jan. 3, the nonprofit took to Facebook to share the news of Betty White-Ludden, also known as Betty, being born.  "This beautiful little jennet was born on Christmas Day, but we were unable to come up with the perfect name until New Year’s Eve. Her namesake [has been] a PVDR supporter since 2006," the post states. "Betty White was a tremendous voice for animals both here in the US and around the world," the post continues, adding that the sanctuary is also naming its...
THE mother of a missing New Hampshire girl, Harmony Montgomery, has spoken for the first time since her disappearance two years ago. The seven-year-old, who was not in the care of her biological mother Crystal Sorey, hasn't been seen since October 2019 when cops were called to a home in Manchester. 2Harmony Montgomery hasn't been seen since 2019 2On Saturday her biological mother issued a plea that she would 'never stop looking' Her disappearance, however, wasn't reported until two years later - the last week of December 2021. Ever since, Police have carried out a search for the young girl and this week raided a home where Harmony was last known to have lived. The girl’s step-mom and father have this week faced separate charges in court, but so far nobody has been arrested in connection with her disappearance. Weekly jobless claims fell again last week, tumbling to a new 52-year low, the Labor Department reported Thursday. Initial filings for unemployment insurance dropped 43,000 to 184,000 for the week ended Dec. 4, the lowest going back to Sept. 6, 1969, which saw 182,000. Those figures are not adjusted for population growth. In 1969, the U.S. population was around 203 million, around 130 million smaller than today. The civilian labor force was counted at around 82 million, one-half of today’s workforce. Initial claims for unemployment insurance were expected to total 223,000 for the week ended Dec. 4, according to Econoday. The prior week was revised up slightly from 222,000 to 227,000. The pre-opening futures prices moved sharply lower on Thursday after the release of the figures, likely indicating that investors think it may prompt the Fed to tighten monetary policy more quickly than anticipated. The historically low level of claims suggests that employers are reluctant to let go of workers in a very tight labor market. This could provoke further concerns about wage pressures accelerating inflation. Job openings reached a...

In this article DISVIDEO2:5302:53Trading Nation: Is there still opportunity for profits with Disney's stock?Trading NationDisney shares plummeted Thursday, falling 7% in their worst session since June 2020, after the media giant reported a subscriber growth slowdown in its streaming service. The stock was the worst performer in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Its losses pulled it into a bear market, having fallen 20% from a March peak. But traders are split on whether this latest sell-off spells opportunity or not. Fairlead Strategies founder Katie Stockton, for example, says Thursday's drop looks like a "shakeout." She also sees it as a chance to buy at a discount. "A shakeout is essentially a false breakdown and this is actually kind of an exciting move for me to see from Disney because it's been such a laggard since March," Stockton told CNBC's "Trading Nation" on Thursday. "Into this gap down we have obviously emotionally-charged selling, it could be a selling climax of sorts especially with the volume running heavy."Zoom In IconArrows pointing outwards"There is support on the chart between about $153 and $155...

Jupiter's Great Red Spot is getting faster, according to NASA scientists, who say winds around the edge of the famous storm are now reaching 400mph.  NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland analysed the Hubble Space Telescope's regular 'storm reports' and discovered winds in the 'high-speed ring' on the edge of the storm had increased by eight per cent since 2009. In contrast, the winds near the red spot's innermost region are moving significantly more slowly, 'like someone cruising lazily on a sunny Sunday afternoon,' said NASA.  The scientists are still unclear what the changing wind speeds actually mean for the Great Red Spot, which is bigger than Earth itself.  'That's hard to diagnose, since Hubble can't see the bottom of the storm very well. Anything below the cloud tops is invisible in the data,' explained researcher Michael Wong. 'But it's an interesting piece of data that can help us understand what's fueling the Great Red Spot and how it's maintaining energy.' The lab had been observing his movements in the Okefenokee Swamp since June 2020, according to a statement on Facebook. "Alligators can live to be approximately 80 years old though so it is possible he was close to that!"Joe was last tracked via GPS on July 20, and the lab said, "We first thought the tag had simply fallen off as it had been several weeks since we had received any GPS points from him."Read MoreBut after several weeks, the satellite tag was found and the lab confirmed his death."We are so grateful to have known him, for his contribution to science and the...
