(CNN)Paris Saint-Germain star Lionel Messi has failed to make the shortlist for the Ligue 1 player of the year after a disappointing first season in France. The omission comes as little surprise with Messi scoring four goals in 23 league games following his move from Barcelona last year. Nominated for the player of the year award is Messi's PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe, the top scorer in Ligue 1 with 24 goals so far this season, Rennes' Martin Terrier, AS Monaco's Wissam Ben Yedder, Marseille's Dimitri Payet, and Lyon's Lucas Paqueta. That also means that PSG forward Neymar, the league's player of the year in 2017-18, has also failed to make the shortlist. EDINBURGH, Scotland (AP) — At age 39, goalkeeper Craig Gordon was voted player of the year in Scotland for a record third time on Wednesday. The Scotland and Hearts player was picked again by journalists 16 years after he first won the award in his previous spell with the Edinburgh club. Gordon kept five clean sheets in six World Cup qualifying games this season to help Scotland advance to the playoffs. The Scots host Ukraine on June 1 and the winner plays Wales four days later for a place at the tournament in Qatar. He has captained Hearts to third place in the Scottish Premiership, and qualification for the Europa League playoff round next season, and to the Scottish Cup final where it will meet Rangers on May 21. Gordon sat out two full seasons due to serious knee injuries a decade ago and won his second player of the year award in 2015 for his comeback season with Celtic. He won the soccer writers’ vote ahead of Celtic’s Callum McGregor and Cameron Carter-Vickers, and Rangers captain James Tavernier. The...
BOSTON (CBS) — Jayson Tatum has some bulletin board material to bring into the NBA Playoffs. Despite earning three Player of the Week awards in March, the Celtics star did not bring home the NBA’s final Player of the Month award of the 2021-22 season. Tatum had a March for the ages, averaging 32.8 points per game while leading Boston to an 11-2 record over his 13 contests. He scored 30 or more points nine times last month, including a three-game stretch where he averaged 45 points per game in wins over the Grizzlies, Nets and Hornets, highlighted by his 54-point explosion against Brooklyn, READ MORE: Bruins Can Clinch Playoff Spot As Early As Tuesday NightAlas, the final Player of the Month award wasn’t just for March, and included the first two weeks of April as well. Tatum only averaged 25 points per game over his final four appearances of the season, and the Player of the Month award went to someone else. That someone else is at least pretty great too, with Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo earning the honor after he averaged...
Getty Marcus Smart, Boston Celtics The Boston Celtics have two games remaining of their regular season, which means we’re getting closer to learning if Marcus Smart has done enough to earn himself Defensive Player of the Year honors. A lot has been said about Smart’s candidacy for the individual defensive award this year, from both sides. Some people believe it’s been far too long since a guard was credited for their excellent defense, while others are steadfast in their belief that centers are the most impactful defenders on a team. Yet, according to Andre Drummond of the Brooklyn Nets, no player deserved the award more than Marcus Smart, with the multi-time rebounding champion stating the veteran guard is “a menace on and off the ball.” @smart_MS3 for DPOTY! CRISTIANO RONALDO has been snubbed for Serie A Player of the Season with Romelu Lukaku taking the award... despite being top scorer. Ronaldo's 29 Serie A goals were not enough to edge out Lukaku when it came to the gong, but the pair did both secure moves back to the Premier League. 1Lukaku takes player of the season award for title triumph with Inter.Credit: Getty Lukaku received the award on Monday, which once again prompted him to hail the Inter Milan faithful. He told AIC on accepting his award: "The club [Inter] always backed us and so did the fans who I want to thank." The Belgian forward played a vital role in Antonio Conte's title winning side last season, scoring 24 goals in 36 appearances. BOSTON (CBS) — The Boston Celtics are enjoying an incredible second-half turnaround to their season, thanks mostly to the team’s top-ranked defense. Though Jayson Tatum’s metamorphosis from Boston’s star to a full-fledged NBA superstar has certainly helped, it’s the Celtics’ nightly stifling of opponents that has led to the Celtics’ climb up the Eastern Conference standings. Simply put, the Celtics are not a fun team to play against for anyone at the moment. Great, good, and bad teams alike have been stymied by Boston’s defense since head coach Ime Udoka called out the team’s mental mettle after an embarrassing loss to the Knicks in early January, and the Celtics have won 21 of their 29 games over that stretch. New York Knicks’ Julius Randle wins ‘Most Improved Player of the Year’ award Alexander Wilson May 25, 2021 ShareTweetFlipRedditOne of the primary reasons the New York Knicks are currently in the postseason is thanks to All-Star Julius Randle, who has witnessed a significant transformation compared to 2020. Last season, Randle averaged 19.5 points per game, but was inconsistent from the field, and shot a measly .277 from beyond the arc. The 26-year-old has completely revitalized his game, working all off-season to improve his shooting and efficiency in all categories. Thanks to his rejuvenated career and stellar campaign, Randle won the league’s “Most Improved Player of the Year” award, thanks to 24.1 points, 6.0 assists, and 10.2 rebounds per game. He finished the regular season with a .456 field-goal percentage and a massive increase in the three-point category, ballooning to .411%. “I thought he would have a good year, but I didn’t see this level,” Thibodeau said a few weeks ago. “Obviously, the big thing was the three,” Thibodeau said of Randle’s...
