New York (CNN Business)It looks like bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies may not be digital gold after all. Bitcoin prices are down more than 15% so far in 2022. Other top cryptos, such as ethereum, solana and Elon Musk's beloved dogecoin, also have fallen sharply this year. Meanwhile, tactual gold is up more than 4% and back around $1,900 an ounce, once again flirting with record highs of above $2,000. Savvy investors seem to realize that, at a time when the Federal Reserve is aggressively raising interest rates, gold and other precious metals such as silver and palladium are better hedges against inflation. "It is now clear that bitcoin trades parallel to the risk assets, rather than [as] a safe haven," Ipek Ozkardeskaya, an analyst with Swissquote, said in a report earlier this month. "Bitcoin is still not the digital gold, it's more of a crypto-proxy for Nasdaq, apparently." Not even Musk's acquisition of Twitter (TWTR) — which some observers think could lead to even more promotion of cryptocurrencies on the platform — or the news that investment giant Fidelity will...

While Hope Solo rose to stardom as US soccer's star goalie, winning two gold medals and a World Cup, the athlete has become synonymous with trouble following tales of drunken behavior that led to arrests for suspicion of beating her nephew and drunk driving.    From 2000 through 2016, Solo, 40, made 202 national team appearances and helped the US a pair of Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012, as well as the 2015 World Cup. Despite being hailed as an icon of the sport, all was not as it seemed on the surface as Solo admitted to taking part in drunken parties during the Beijing and London Games, appearing drunk on TV during a celebration interview for the former.  By 2014, Solo would be arrested under suspicion of assaulting her half-sister and 17-year-old nephew while she was drunk, and she was later suspended from Team USA in the 2016 Rio Olympics after she lashed out against Sweden when she failed to block their winning penalty kick goal. Now, six years later, Hope finds herself in trouble again after being...
The Virginia Gold Cup, the commonwealth’s biggest horse racing event, will be held May 7 at Great Meadow in The Plains. The event, celebrating its 97th anniversary this year, was scaled down for the past two years in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, organizers said in a statement Friday, and there will still be changes for 2022. Tailgate packages and hospitality tents are available, the organizers said, and attendees have to be invited guests of those who have one or the other. There won’t be general admission passes. The Gold Cup combines seven steeplechase and flat races. Under normal circumstances, around 50,000 people a year turn out for the races, as well as to see and be seen, with the hat contest as much of a spectacle as the rest of the events. You can get tent passes online and find out more information on their website as well, or call 540-347-2612.
Sneaky New Yorkers taking advantage of a city clear-air initiative are making up to $225,000-a-year by reporting idling trucks to the city, then claiming a cut of the $350 fine.  Leaving a truck engine idling for more than three minutes is an offense in NYC, with anyone who submits video proof to the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) handed $85 per proven violation.  Environmental lawyer Ernest Welde, 47, says he submitted proof of thousands of violations last year, which are yet to be processed, but which he estimates will earn him between $200,000 and $225,000.   And busybody former Marine Paul Slapikas, 81, says he netted $64,000 in 2021 by doing the same thing. Truckers caught with idling engines have been known to lash out at anyone they suspect of filming them - so Slapikas, who lives in Queens, has devised a clever routine to throw them off the scent. He stands in front of an idling truck acting like a lost tourist- equipped with a camera hanging from his neck and a city map and a flip phone. But he...

GOLD prices are flirting with all time highs.  The price of the precious commodity has been somewhat volatile in past weeks, but has been on the rise for weeks. 3Going for gold...how much can you make? Typically, gold gains value during tumultuous times, so the Russian invasion of Ukraine is just one contributing factor to this recent increase. In August 2020, the price of an ounce of gold hit a record high of 2074.88 during the height of uncertainty around the pandemic.  Prices dropped before the end of the year and generally remained below $1,900 an ounce in 2021 before surging early this year and topping out at $2,043.  Currently, the price is fluctuating between $1,900 and 2,000. In this article HYMC AMC Adam Aron, AMC Entertainment president and CEO.David Orrell | CNBC Movie theater chain AMC Entertainment has agreed to purchase a major stake in a Nevada metal miner, the companies announced Tuesday, an unusual expansion for the one-time meme stock. AMC will spend $27.9 million in cash for the deal, receiving roughly 23.4 million shares for the company, Hycroft Mining Holding Corp., and an equal amount of stock warrants. The deal would make AMC the owner of roughly 22% of Hycroft. AMC CEO Adam Aron said in a release: "The strength of SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME and THE BATMAN, as well as 2022's promising industry box office, heighten AMC Entertainment's conviction that we are on a glide path to recovery. Our strategic investment being announced today is the result of our having identified a company in an unrelated industry that appears to be just like AMC of a year ago. It, too, has rock-solid assets, but for a variety of reasons, it has been facing a severe and immediate liquidity issue. Its share price has...
Undefeated MMA fighter and two-time Olympic gold medalist Kayla Harrison is headed back to the PFL. Harrison, a two-time $1 million prize champion in the Professional Fighters League lightweight championship, signed a multi-year deal with the company she’s called home since 2018. The 31-year-old Harrison had been courted by MMA promotions Bellator and UFC and the prospect of better fights against stiffer competition enticed her to consider jumping ship. Harrison is 12-0 over her professional career, with her lone fight outside the PFL banner in 2020 when the promotion took a year off because of the pandemic. Harrison eyed a fight with Bellator’s Cris “Cyborg” Justino and hoped there was some way the fight would happen in 2022. “It’s been a long, kind of bumpy, roller coaster ride to get to here,” she said. “I’m happy with the PFL. I believe in the format, I believe in the company, I believe what they’re trying to do. They’re paying me a hell of a lot of money.” Harrison told The Associated Press she did receive a contract offer from another...

Sign up for the free Mother Jones newsletter. After Dr. Simone Gold, the Beverly Hills anti-vaccine activist and founder of America’s Frontline Doctors, was arrested last year for participating in the January 6 insurrection at the US Capitol, she was defiant. She claimed she was simply exercising her free speech rights and even made a dramatic video portraying herself as a victim of political persecution. Even after being arrested, she has spent the last year on the right-wing media circuit and speaking at political conferences denouncing vaccines and pushing dubious Covid cures. That’s why, of the more than 725 people charged with crimes related to the Capitol insurrection, Gold seemed like one of the most likely to hold out and go to trial, where she would relish the forum to further promote her views. New Delhi (CNN Business)Indian businesswoman Swati Daga first bought bitcoin in 2017, when the cryptocurrency was trading well under $3,000. Her decision to invest in digital currencies was met with wariness by her family, she recalls. "The elders in my family told me not to throw my money away," said Daga, who runs a food business near New Delhi. But the 33-year-old hasn't regretted her decision — bitcoin's value has increased 15 times since then — and she continues to invest as much as 10% of her savings in cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin and ethereum.
