BEIJING (AP) — The Finns are finally flying home with Olympic hockey gold. Finland knocked off the favored Russians 2-1 Sunday to win the tournament without NHL players at the Beijing Games, capturing an Olympic gold medal for the first time in the nation’s history. The defending champions had to settle for silver instead of going back to back. Finland had never won at the Olympics on the men’s or women’s side. It last reached the final in 2006 and lost to Sweden, matching the silver from 1988. After winning gold in 2018 as the Olympic Athletes from Russia, the Russians competed this time as ROC, short for Russian Olympic Committee. The ROC and OAR names were the result of sanctions for doping and cover-ups across multiple Olympic sports. The hockey tournament unfolded in the shadow of another Russian doping saga, this time in figure skating after word emerged that 15-year-old Kamila Valieva tested positive for a banned substance in December, helped the Russians win women’s team gold and was allowed to skate in the individual event, in which she...
'Real Time' host Bill Maher struck out at American celebrities who he said 'kowtow' to China on Friday night, including California-born Olympic skier Eileen Gu who is competing for China, her mother's homeland, in this year's Beijing Olympics.  'Is that cool now, to choose to represent a totalitarian police state over America,' he asked, kicking off his monologue.  'The Olympics pretends to only be about sports but of course, the games have always been a bit of a proxy war for which country has the best system.  'And by choosing Team China, Eileen Gu became a living symbol of China's triumph over the west, which wouldn't bother me so much if I thought China had triumphed over us in the ways that really matter. But they haven't.' The pressure weighing on teenage figure skaters was all too evident on Thursday when silver medallist Alexandra Trusova broke down in tears before the podium ceremony after the women's single event at the Beijing Olympics. The 17-year-old Russian, who attempted five quadruple jumps in a high-octane routine at the Capital Indoor Stadium, missed out on gold by 4.22 points after the judges favoured her compatriot Anna Shcherbakova's free skate. World champion Shcherbakova, also 17, landed only two quads, and Trusova's athletic performance to Cruella and the Stooges's 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' helped her score more points in the free skate, but it was not enough to make up for her disappointing performance in Tuesday's short programme. Silver medallist Alexandra Trusova broke down in tears before the podium ceremony The Russian declared she 'hated' skating and reportedly initially refused to go on the podium Я рада тому, что у Саши есть характер и она может просто послать всех. Finishing on the podium is a matter of national pride. For some winners, it also means taking home a cash bonus and opening doors to rare multimillion-dollar sponsorship opportunities. The International Olympic Committee does not pay prize money to medalists, but many countries offer monetary rewards to their athletes for the number of medals they win at either the Summer Olympics or Winter Olympics. CNBC compiled the chart below, sourcing information from various national Olympic committees, sports associations and personal finance site Money Under 30. The data showed the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee rewards its athletes $37,500 for every gold medal won, $22,500 for silver and $15,000 for bronze. Most of that prize money is not taxable unless athletes report gross income that exceeds $1 million. American athletes also receive other forms of support such...

BEIJING (AP) — Shaun White’s brilliant and transcendent Olympic career is over. It ended with a fall on his final run down the halfpipe, a heartfelt ovation from the crowd and then a tearful farewell to a sport he helped define. A few mountains away, Mikaela Shiffrin finally made it all the way down the Alpine ski hill, finished ninth in super-G and then expressed relief. There were no medals and different emotions Friday for two of the biggest American stars at the Beijing Olympics. Shiffrin could have two more chances to become the first Alpine ski racer from the United States to win three Olympic golds across a career. White, though, is finished. His fifth and final Olympics ended when he clipped the wall trying to land his second trick of his third run. Knowing it was over, he pulled off his helmet and acknowledged the crowd as he slowly rode the rest of the way down the halfpipe. Trying to win his fourth gold medal, he instead finished fourth. “I’m not sad,” White said, although he cried a...
BEIJING (AP) — Nathan Chen soared effortlessly and nearly perfectly five times during his “Rocketman” performance. When his skates touched down for the final time in a historic arena in Beijing, he was an Olympic gold medalist. Up at Genting Snow Park, Chloe Kim nailed all five jumps on her first run through the Secret Garden Olympic halfpipe, enough for her to easily defend her Olympic title on Thursday. It was the United States’ best day yet at the Beijing Games, giving the Americans a total of three gold medals and nine overall. Chen, whose parents immigrated from China, had a memorable free skate to finally put behind him the immense disappointment from four years ago, when a nightmarish short program in South Korea dashed his medal hopes. Skating his “Rocketman” program set to the film score by Elton John, the 22-year-old Chen landed all five of his quads to leave no question he was the best in the world. He finished with 332.60 points, three off his own world record and 22 ahead of silver medalist Yuma Kagiyama of...
(CNN)Snowboarder Max Parrot won an Winter Olympic gold medal in Beijing on Monday, just over three years after the Canadian was diagnosed with cancer.Having won silver in the men's slopestyle event at PyeongChang four years ago, the 27-year-old went one better at the Genting Snow Park to secure his first ever Olympic gold medal. His best score of 90.96 was enough to beat Chinese 17-year-old Su Yiming's best attempt of 88.70, and compatriot Mark McMorris' bronze medal performance made it two Canadians on the podium.Diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in December 2018, Parrot underwent 12 rounds of chemotherapy before announcing in July 2019 that he had "won" against cancer.Speaking after triumph in Beijing, Parrot reflected on his "nightmare" journey over the past four years.Read More"It's definitely amazing," Parrot said."They were really hard times and, at times, I felt like I was a lion in a cage because I wasn't able to do what I love the most, which is snowboarding."That was the first time in my life that I had to put my snowboard in the closet. ZHANGJIAKOU, China (AP) — Canadian snowboarder Max Parrot took home the Olympic gold medal in men’s slopestyle on Monday just over three years removed from being diagnosed with cancer. Technically superior on his second of three runs, Parrot scored a 90.96 to hold off the field. He tossed his snowboard in delight after the final score was revealed. Su Yiming of China earned the silver and Mark McMorris of Canada used a strong final run to bump himself into bronze — his third straight one — and knock defending champion Red Gerard of the United States off the podium. It’s been a disappointing day for some of the U.S. medal hopefuls. Gerard couldn’t put the Americans in the win column just hours after the heavily favored Mikaela Shiffrin didn’t finish in the giant slalom, her best ski racing event. The 27-year-old Parrot was diagnosed Hodgkin lymphoma about 10 months after winning a silver medal at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. He under went 12 treatments of chemotherapy over six months — a process he described as the toughest months of his...
BEIJING (AP) — For members of Vermont’s “Skiing Cochrans” clan, competing in an Olympics is a right of passage. A family tradition. First there were siblings Marilyn, Bobby and Barbara Ann at the 1972 Sapporo Games, fulfilling a plan hatched by their parents, Mickey and Ginny Cochran, in the backyard ski area. Then younger sister Lindy raced at the Innsbruck Games in 1976, grandson Jimmy was on the U.S. Ski Team in 2006 and 2010 and now Ryan Cochran-Siegle is at his second Olympics. Fifty years after his mom, Barbara Ann, won the gold in slalom, Cochran-Siegle is contending for a medal in Sunday’s men’s downhill — the opening event on the Alpine skiing program of the Beijing Games. “It’s always cool when I go back home just talking about what it’s like and having that little sharing session,” Cochran-Siegle said. So how was it growing up the son of an Olympic champion? “She’s still just my mom,” Cochran-Siegle said. “Most of our conversations are pretty normal.” That’s because modesty is also a Cochran tradition. In a recent video interview,...
BEIJING (AP) — Irene Scouten gave the mighty Dutch a gold medal in the first speedskating event of the Beijing Games, breaking a 20-year-old Olympic record in the women’s 3,000 meters Saturday. Skating in the last of 10 pairs, Schouten turned in a blazing final lap to post the winning time of 3 minutes, 56.93 seconds. That broke the previous Olympic mark of 3:57.70, set by Germany’s Claudia Pechstein at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. In a fitting bookend to the event, Pechstein skated in the opening pair to become the oldest female athlete in Olympic history at 49. The German finished last — more than 20 seconds behind the winner. Italy’s Francesca Lollobrigida, pushing Schouten all the way in the final pair, held on for the silver in 3:58.06. The three-time Olympian is the great-niece of 94-year-old actress Gina Lollobrigida, who was an international star in the 1950s and ’60s. The bronze went to Canada’s Isabelle Weidemann in 3:58.64. Martina Sablikova of the Czech Republic, the winner of six Olympic medals including three golds, held the top spot...
