President Biden signed off on a plan to redeploy several hundred troops to Somalia, reversing an order from President Trump that withdrew the 750 troops that had been stationed there to fight terrorism.  Prior to Trump's withdrawal in December 2020, the U.S. forces had been there to help in the fight against the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab, an insurgent group that has sought to topple the government and establish its own Sharia rule in Somalia.  In addition, Biden signed off on a Pentagon request to go on the offensive and target about a dozen suspected al-Shabab leaders, according to the New York Times. Since Biden took office, U.S. forces have limited attacks to airstrikes that were meant to defend allied forces facing an immediate threat.  U.S. Army soldiers, assigned to the East Africa Response Force (EARF), 101st Airborne Division on a mission to bolster the security of Manda Bay Airfield, Kenya after an attack by Somalia's al Shabaab militants that killed three Americans, board a transport plane in Camp Lemonnier, Djibouti January 5, 2020 The new deployment and stepped-up aggression in Somalia...

The Pope has revealed that he asked for a face-to-face meeting with Vladimir Putin to try to make him see sense over his bloody war in Ukraine, but has so far been greeted by silence. The 85-year-old pontiff told Italy's Corriere Della Sera newspaper that he had communicated to Moscow via Vatican diplomats that he sought a meeting three weeks into the conflict. Pope Francis previously met Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban two weeks ago and was told by the far-right leader - Putin's principal ally in the EU - that 'the Russians have a plan, that everything will end on May 9', referring to the anniversary of Russia's liberation at the end of World War II. With that date coming early next week, Francis communicated to Putin that he was willing to make the trip to Moscow.  'Certainly, it was necessary for the Kremlin leader to allow an opening. We have not yet received a response and we are still insisting,' Francis said. He added: 'I fear that Putin cannot, and does not, want to have this meeting at this time....
Democrat Senator Joe Manchin is crossing the aisle to weigh in on a fierce GOP primary race in his home state of West Virginia. The centrist Democrat appeared in a Friday campaign ad attacking Donald Trump-backed House Rep. Alex Mooney, instead appearing to endorse his challenger, Rep. David McKinley. He also takes aim at President Joe Biden's failed $1.75 trillion Build Back Better plan, which Manchin himself killed when announcing his opposition to it late last year. Mooney and McKinley are fighting for the GOP nomination to represent West Virginia's 2nd Congressional District after the state lost a seat to redistricting after the 2020 census.  It's rare for sitting lawmakers to wade into a race pitting two incumbents against one another in a primary, much less so for the opposing party. Manchin is the only Democrat currently representing deep red West Virginia in Congress. Trump won the state by roughly 40 points in the 2020 presidential election. 'I've always said if I can't go home to explain it, I can't vote for it. And that's why I opposed Build Back Better,' the...

Electric car pioneer Elon Musk is plotting to spend up to $15 billion of his own cash to take Twitter private and will launch a second takeover bid in 10 days, it has been claimed.   The billionaire, who is Twitter's second-biggest shareholder with a 9.1 percent stake, has tapped Morgan Stanley to raise $10 billion in debt and will make his next offer in a week-and-a-half, according to the New York Post. The Tesla chief, currently the world's richest man with $273 billion, is also looking to borrow against his existing 9.2 per cent in the company, which could mean several billion dollars more to make his bid, the Post reported. Shares in the social media app dropped nearly 5 percent to $46.16 in afternoon trade, a deep discount from the $54.30 that Musk offered last week in his initial bid for the platform.  The company hit its highest share price in February 2021 at $77.06. TYSON FURY dropped a huge hint of how he could box Dillian Whyte on Saturday during his open workout session. The 33-year-old, who defends his WBC heavyweight title against his British compatriot at Wembley, boxed southpaw for the entire session on Tuesday. 4Tyson Fury boxed the entire open workout session in the southpaw stanceCredit: Jamie McPhilimey 4Fury defends his WBC heavyweight title against Dillian Whyte at Wembley on SaturdayCredit: Jamie McPhilimey Known to be ambidextrous, the Gypsy King usually fights orthodox during his bouts, while switching to the left-handed stance sporadically throughout. But he stayed in the southpaw position during his pads workout with trainer SugarHill Steward. Commenting on the footage which was shared by BT Sport Boxing, his dad John refused to give away the game plan. Asked whether that is a sign he will box Whyte southpaw, he remarked: "I can't give too much away there. 4Fury hasn't fought in England since beating Sefer Seferi on his comeback to the ring in June 2018Credit: Jamie McPhilimey READ MORE IN BOXINGFURY VS WHYTE All of the latest from HUGE...
Texas Governor Greg Abbott is plotting a White House run - and his new policy of bussing illegal immigrants to DC is part of his plan to woo GOP voters, analysts believe.    Gov. Abbott was praised by fellow Republicans after he sent two buses full of Latin American asylum applicants to the U.S. Capitol last week.  He has vowed to continue to do so as border states brace for a huge influx of migrants from next month when President Biden brings a Trump-era law that guaranteed immediate expulsion to an end.  Party insiders allege Abbott's 'audacious' response to the border crisis is a first step towards a presidential bid, which they allege has been well received by an 'already amped-up base'.  'Like so many Republicans, Gov. Abbott is increasing his name ID and pushing on issues important to the base and thereby putting himself in a position to run,' GOP strategist Doug Heye told the newspaper.   'Hopefully this gets liberal elites and the Biden administration to actually care about the millions of illegal aliens who are streaming across our southern border,' Sen. Ted...
Former Trump strategist Steve Bannon is warning Donald Trump that his preferred candidates risk losing key primary battles to 'Never Trumpers' if he does not pour millions of dollars into their campaigns. Holding rallies and sending out emailed endorsements is not enough, he said, if it does not come with staff and cash for advertising.  His comments reflect growing concern among Trump world insiders that the former president's grip on the Republican Party is growing weaker ahead of November's midterms. And Bannon highlighted the race for governor in Georgia, where Trump's pick David Perdue is trailing incumbent Brian Kemp by double digits. Closing that gap in 50 days, he said, meant a big ground game and a 'bombardment' of TV advertising.  'You got to really commit. First off you got to spend money, you got to put a lot of money into it. You got to commit money, you got to commit time and effort,' he told the John Fredericks radio show.   'I don't think there's been the focus on it. I don't think one or two rallies is going...
The America COMPETES Act of 2022 contains many of the 'Made in America' ideas the Florida Republican senator pitched in February. On Feb. 10, Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) gave a speech at the pro-Trump America First Policy Institute that included 10 ideas for how the United States could beat "our enemy," China, in what he called "a New Cold War." On March 28, Scott was one of just 28 senators — all Republicans — who voted against H.R. 4521, the United States Innovation and Competition Act of 2021, also known as the America COMPETES Act, which passed in the Senate. The bill, backed by Biden, would invest billions in American manufacturing and enhance the ability of domestic businesses to compete internationally. The bill contains provisions that would do several of the exact things Scott proposed in February. During his speech, he lauded Trump, who repeatedly praised and defended the Chinese regime during his single term in the White House, for having "opened the eyes of everyday Americans to the goals of that evil regime." Scott also attacked President Joe Biden for...
Sen. Rick Scott of Florida, who chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), has drawn a great deal of criticism from Democrats for his proposal to raise taxes on half of Americans — specifically, those with lower incomes. But some Republicans are calling Scott out as well, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. And Scott got some pushback from Fox News’ John Roberts as well during a March 27 appearance on “Fox News Sunday.” In his 11-point Rescue America Plan, Scott proposes, “All Americans should pay some income tax to have skin in the game, even if a small amount. Currently, over half of Americans pay no income tax.” "It's in the plan! It's in the plan. But Senator, hang on, it's not a Democratic talking point. It's in the plan" -- even Fox News's John Roberts can't believe it when Rick Scott lies about his own policy plan, which calls for a tax increase on a majority of Americanspic.twitter.com/sa4WgUBgyJ — Aaron Rupar (@Aaron Rupar) 1648390840 Roberts, not to be confused with the U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative chief justice, quoted...
Seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton has no plans to emulate sporting greats like Tom Brady and Roger Federer by competing in his 40s. “I haven’t thought about that number, because I’m 37. Jeez, I’ve still got a bit to go,” Hamilton said Saturday, laughing. “So, I honestly haven’t thought about that, and I don’t plan on being here close to that age.” He has a contract with Mercedes until the end of next season, when he’ll be 38. That two-year deal was only signed last July and it is not known if he’ll extend it. The 44-year-old Brady is widely regarded as the greatest quarterback in NFL history, while the 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer will be 41 if he comes back to play in late summer as planned after knee surgery. The exuberant and prolific Zlatan Ibrahimovic recently returned from injury for Italian soccer club AC Milan, and the imposing 40-year-old Swede is playing well for the title contender. Hamilton is F1’s record holder for most wins (103) and pole positions (103) and is tied with fellow great...
Sergio Flores/Getty Images Former Trump White House senior advisor Stephen Miller is still a member of his parents’ T-Mobile family plan. The discovery was made after Miller filed a civil suit against the House Jan. 6 select committee in an attempt to block a subpoena of his phone records. “Plaintiff Carron Drive Apartments LP (“Carron Drive”) is a California Limited Partnership formed in August 1997. Carron Drive is the subscriber for a T-Mobile ‘family plan’ phone account that is used by Michael D. Miller, Miriam G. Miller and their children, including Plaintiff Stephen Miller (‘Family Plan Account’),” the suit explains. “Several of the Family Account Plan members are practicing attorneys who use their phones for privileged call and text communications with clients and to otherwise conduct their law practices.” Miller’s suit argues that his family’s phone records are protected by attorney-client privilege, also claiming the phone records contain “sensitive, personal communications that Mr. Miller had with medical professionals and family regarding his wife and new-born daughter.” “Carron Drive and Mr. Miller have filed this Complaint to obtain this Court’s protection from...
United States Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) dumped cold water on Florida Republican Senator Rick Scott’s “11 Point Plan to Rescue America” during a news conference on Tuesday, telling reporters that Scott’s right-wing wish list is low-hanging fruit for Democratic attack ads ahead of November’s midterm elections. Scott, the chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, released his proposal last week to offer voters a reason to vote for the GOP this fall. As a whole, the party has no coordinated or discernible policy priorities except to batter President Joe Biden. But at the heart of what Scott put forth is a provision that most conservatives (and liberals) would likely reject – raising taxes on poor and working-class Americans. Moments after Scott exited the press briefing, McConnell shredded Scott’s hopes of shaping his party’s platform. “Let me tell you what will not be a part of our agenda: We will not have as part of our agenda a bill that raises taxes on half the American people and sunsets Social Security and Medicare after five years. That will not...
In war, your plans should be as impenetrable as night - at least according to famed Chinese general Sun Tzu. But it seems Belarus dictator Alexander Lukashenko isn't much of a scholar, at least if his latest stunt on state TV is anything to go by. Addressing his security council today, the strongman appeared to be standing in front of a battle map showing Russia's attack plan in Ukraine. The map showed Russian lines of attack heading into Ukraine, some of which have materialised in the first few days of the invasion - such as forces storming towards Kyiv from the north, and towards Kherson from Crimea. But they also showed off several attacks that have yet to come to pass - with one even appearing to point from the port city of Odessa into Moldova, suggesting Russia plans to march troops into Ukraine's neighbour. Alexander Lukashenko has appeared in front of a battle map during a state TV broadcast which appears to detail Russia's attack plans in Ukraine The map seems to suggest that a force will be sent...
President Joe Biden will shift from his Build Back Better plan to a new four-point economic agenda during his State of the Union address on Tuesday night. The focus will be on helping the economic recovery amid record high inflation where Americans are facing rising prices on food, gas and rent.  'The American people will hear a lot about how he's going to lower their costs, how he's going to build continue to build a strong economy over the long term,' White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Monday in a preview of his remarks. In his address before Congress, Biden will call for reforms on housing, education and climate under a four-point plan that will focus on 'making more things in America'; reducing costs of everyday expenses; 'promoting fair competition'; and 'eliminating barriers to good-paying jobs,' according to a fact sheet from the administration. Many of his ideas will mirror those in Build Back Better, his approximately $2 trillion social services legislation that was killed by Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, who said he wouldn't support it because of the cost. ...
Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida has unveiled an 11-point plan he hopes will serve as the de facto Republican agenda in the event the GOP retakes the House and Senate in this year’s midterms. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell hasn’t rolled out any such proposal for his party, so Scott appears to be forging ahead on his own. Most of the 59-page agenda is standard Republican fare. But on page 35, the reader is informed that under Scott’s plan, most Americans would have to pay more in federal income taxes. One of the bullet points on that page reads, All Americans should pay some income tax to have skin in the game, even if a small amount. Currently over half of Americans pay no income tax. As you can see, the plan clearly states that all Americans would be required to pay an income tax. And since most Americans don’t currently pay that tax, most Americans would therefore see their income taxes raised under this proposal. Sean Hannity interviewed Scott on Tuesday night and at one point asked him about Majority...
New York's Mayor, Eric Adams, paid an emotional tribute to the latest victim of the city's gun violence, an 18-year-old aspiring rapper, Jayquan McKenley.  McKenley who went by the name Chii Wvttz, was shot dead outside a recording studio in Brooklyn's Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood on Sunday. Adams struggled to hold back tears as he blamed the shooting on a 'broken system that 'continually fails black and brown New Yorkers.' Adams went on to detail what he saw as the various flaws and failures in society that ultimately lead to the teen's death. 'The story of Jayquan breaks my heart,' Adams said. 'His story tests my spirit, and we must do better for young people like him.  'I'm sorry we betrayed him and so many others like him, but you have my word as your mayor that I will be looking out for the thousands of other Jayquans in our city because I was once a Jayquan, too.  Jayquan McKenley had been arrested several times since 2017 including once for attempted murder last year Adams told how McKenley was placed in a program for children...
