MANCHESTER UNITED are set to have no rivals in the race to sign Declan Rice this summer, according to reports. The West Ham star has enjoyed another brilliant season, coming third in this season's FWA Footballer of the Year award. 1Declan Rice could join Man United this summerCredit: Alamy Rice, 23, has plenty of admirers, but West Ham's huge asking price has reportedly put a lot of teams off. According to ESPN, Man United want to take advantage of other clubs' reluctance to pay more than £100million for Rice to secure his signature this summer. Chelsea would love to re-sign Rice, who they released as a teenager, but their ownership situation complicates matters. Even when a takeover is completed, the Blues will likely have to prioritise moving for a new defender and striker. LONDON (AP) — Premier League clubs united in their opposition to plans for biennial World Cups when they discussed the FIFA overhaul of the international calendar at a meeting on Thursday. The 20 teams also all opposed a FIFA proposal to reduce the five windows for international men’s matches to just two in a year. “The Premier League is committed to preventing any radical changes to the post-2024 FIFA international match calendar that would adversely affect player welfare and threaten the competitiveness, calendar, structures and traditions of domestic football,” Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said in a statement after declining to be interviewed. UEFA has already expressed its concerns about the changes to world football being championed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Arsene Wenger, the former Arsenal manager who is now chief of global football development at FIFA. “We are open to reforms and new ideas, but they must enhance the complementary balance between domestic and international football in order to improve the game at all levels,” Masters said. “This process should also involve meaningful agreements with the...
Taylor Twellman has played in and watched the U.S.-Mexico rivalry: intense, physical matchups in front of frenzied fans who savor the often bruising battles between the top teams in North and Central America and the Caribbean. Fervor reaches an apex in World Cup qualifying, but Friday’s game at Cincinnati and the return match at Mexico City in March are likely to be the last of these high-stakes meetings because of FIFA’s never-ending campaign to increase tournament fields and revenue, which dilutes the urgency of the matchup. “It’s about the bottom line,” Twellman, a former U.S. forward and current ESPN analyst, said Wednesday, blaming FIFA and the European governing body UEFA for constant expansion. “More interest means more dollars. Those two organizations could care less about anything else.” The U.S beat Mexico 3-2 in the CONCACAF Nations League final at Denver in June on Christian Pulisic’s 114th-minute penalty kick and then, with a roster of mostly backups, defeated El Tri 1-0 in the CONCACAF Gold Cup at Las Vegas on Aug. 1 behind Miles Robinson’s 117th minute goal. “I remember in...
GENEVA (AP) — European soccer clubs were offered backing from UEFA on Monday to oppose FIFA’s push for biennial World Cups while being promised a “multibillion debt fund” to stabilize their industry in the pandemic. For the first time since the pandemic started and the Super League project collapsed, about 160 members of the European Club Association met to hear the vision of their new leader, Nasser al-Khelaifi, who kept his Qatar-owned club Paris Saint-Germain out of the Super League plan in April and helped to sink it within days. “I will not spend much time talking about the … ‘not-so-Super League’ because I do not like to focus on fabulists and failures,” al-Khelaifi said in a speech published by the ECA, whose previous chairman, Andrea Agnelli, resigned in April because his club Juventus was a Super League founder. Al-Khelaifi spoke alongside his close ally UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin to start an intense week of talks in European soccer against a backdrop of FIFA pushing a proposal for two-yearly World Cups for men and women. If approved, it would create...
PARIS (AP) — Paris Saint-Germain has loaned goalkeeper Alphonse Areola to Premier League side West Ham for the upcoming season. PSG said in a statement Thursday that the London-based club has an option to buy Areola, whose PSG contract expires in June 2023. The 28-year-old Areola was on loan at Fulham last season, when it finished 18th in the Premier League and was relegated. Areola kept 10 clean sheets in difficult circumstances and was voted the club’s best player. Areola has won three French league titles along with two French Cups and two League Cups in 107 matches with PSG. He played a few games on loan to Spanish giant Real Madrid two seasons ago and has made three appearances for France. ___ More AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Copyright © 2021 The Associated Press. A-League awarded their individual titles of best player of the season, highest scorer or best goalkeeper and, for the first time, named season eleven. This week, the Australian League hosted its traditional season gala, where individual trophies for the season are presented. The regulatory point is that no supporter participates in the vote, and each trophy is rated by a professional: former players, officials, or members of the media gathered to give a player a three, two, or one point score during the season’s controversial matches. . The final rankings go to the best player, the best goalkeeper and so on. At the same time, members of the Professional Players Association (PFA) and A-League were invited to nominate their top eleven, so it was formed from these votes. Already selected in 2017, Milos Ningovic presented the Johnny Warren Medal of the Year to the Mexican and Sports Master. Wellington Phoenix, Ulysses Devila. It is historically significant that, since then, two players have been selected for the title. Ningovic and Devila scored thirty-four points more than Alessandro Diamond...

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester City will recognize David Silva’s 10-year career at the club by building a statue in honor of the Spanish playmaker at the Etihad Stadium. Silva, who is widely regarded as one of City’s greatest ever players, played his last game for the English team in the 3-1 loss to Lyon in the Champions League quarterfinals on Saturday. He is the only player to have been at the club for all of the trophies won under its Abu Dhabi ownership, starting with the FA Cup in 2011. City said a statue of Silva has been commissioned and will be unveiled in 2021, along with one of former captain Vincent Kompany. A training field will also be dedicated to Silva at City’s practice facility. City said it will immortalize “David’s remarkable contribution to the 6-1 defeat of archrivals (Manchester) United in 2011,” during which he scored and set up Edin Dzeko with a superb volleyed assist. “David Silva is a transformational player,” City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said, “a quiet leader who has acted quietly and deliberately...
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has launched a thinly-veiled dig at Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp over cup eliminations. Liverpool were eliminated from the two domestic cup competitions early on and crashed out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage as they focused all their efforts on ending a 30-year wait for the league title. United, in contrast, will play Chelsea on Sunday for the right to play Arsenal in next month’s FA Cup final, having also reached the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup this season. And as they push for a top-four spot in the Premier League, the Red Devils also have a route back into the Champions League open to them by winning the Europa League.
