Even though he lost the title before entering the Octagon at UFC 274, Charles Oliveira says it doesn’t change that it’s him who is the top dog at 155. It’s been a whirlwind of a few days now for Charles Oliveira. After UFC 274, he still leaves as undeniably the top lightweight in the UFC’s 155-pound division following his win over Justin Gaethje. Oliveira, however, doesn’t have the belt to show for it, becoming the first fighter to be stripped of his UFC title on the scales. Oliveira came in at 155.5 pounds, a half-pound over the strict weight limit for title fights. Oliviera and his team have since disputed they knew he was on weight — and there have been multiple claims about the official scale being off from the ones used backstage. Regardless, to Oliveira, it doesn’t change that in his mind, he is still the reigning and defending champion of the division. And all he has to do for support is look at the team that has helped him along the way to the top. “All I...
MADRID (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz capped another impressive week with a straight-set victory over Alexander Zverev on Sunday to win the Madrid Open and become the second-youngest player to win two Masters 1000 titles. It was the seventh straight win over a top-10 player for the 19-year-old Alcaraz, and his tour-leading fourth title of the year. He also has the most wins this season with 28, one more than Stefanos Tsitsipas. Zverev was trying to win his second consecutive Madrid title, and third overall. ___ More AP tennis: https://apnews.com/hub/tennis and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports ___ Tales Azzoni on Twitter: http://twitter.com/tazzoni Copyright © 2022 The Associated Press. Devin Booker does not take having another chance at an NBA championship lightly. Over his first four years in Phoenix, among players who appeared in at least 200 games spanning the 2015-16 through the 2018-19 seasons, nobody in the NBA experienced more losing than Booker did. He appeared in 272 games in those years, and the Suns lost 197 of them. “A lot has shifted since then,” Booker said. “We’ve watched it grow. We’ve watched it develop. I obviously don’t forget those days. All those times make now even better, make now even more important.” They were the NBA’s worst team in those days. They were the NBA’s best team in this just-concluded regular season. And now comes the big test — the playoffs, and the Suns enter as the overwhelming favorites to become the team that takes the Larry O’Brien Trophy from Commissioner Adam Silver’s hands sometime in June. The first four games on the official playoff slate — the play-in games don’t count, officially — are Saturday, the other four Game 1’s are on Sunday. LeBron James and...

LeBron James is in range to win the 2021-22 NBA scoring title but he’ll need to overcome some hurdles to get to the top of the stat charts. It’s been an utterly disappointing season for the Los Angeles Lakers, who have been eliminated from the playoffs despite compiling a “big three” of stars including LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook. It may not be a complete wash for James, though. He still has a chance to add another accolade to his NBA resumé. The NBA scoring title is still up for grabs. Will LeBron James win the 2021-22 NBA scoring title?Going into Wednesday night, James has averaged 30.3 points per game, a smidge behind the 30.4 average maintained by Joel Embiid. James has to do two important things to overcome Embiid (or hold off Giannis Antetokounmpo who has 29.9 points per game this season). First, he needs to make his scoring average eligible to be considered for the scoring title. NBA rules stipulate players must have played in 70 percent of their team’s games to be eligible. That’s 58 in...

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS – APRIL 02: Jimmy Butler #22 of the Miami Heat shoots in the first half against the Chicago Bulls at United Center on April 02, 2022 in Chicago, Illinois. The Heat may have had some dysfunction on the sidelines recently, but they’re still a legitimate NBA title contender for these five reasons.  Jimmy Butler might not be the most popular teammate in the NBA, but anyone believing his recent friction with head coach Erik Spoelstra might rule the Heat out as title contenders should think again. Miami is heading into the postseason as the probable No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference and possesses a great opportunity to make it to the NBA Finals. It’s unlikely that the Heat would be favored against a healthy Western Conference team in the Finals, but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t pull off an upset. GM Pat Riley has assembled a deep, versatile roster for his protege Spoelstra to coach. Every player acquired by Miami in recent years has been obtained to achieve postseason success. Things won’t be easy for the Heat...

If LeBron James doesn’t make it back in at least some of the season’s remaining games, he may not win the scoring title after all.  As the NBA season approaches a close, certain unknowns come into focus. There’s still a battle among big men for the MVP candidacy, and there are a few teams battling for play-in spots, but the leaders have emerged throughout the course of the season. Among them is LeBron James, the league’s leading scorer who could make NBA history with another scoring title—but none of that is going to happen if LeBron doesn’t recover from his recent ankle injury. The injury could affect more than the Lakers’ play-in position: if James does not play in at least 3 of the Lakers’ 7 remaining games, he will no longer be eligible for the scoring title this season.LeBron James could miss scoring title with ankle injuryPer NBA rules, “players must play at least 70 percent of a season’s games in order to be eligible for the scoring title.” In an 82-game season, 70 percent would be 58 games—and LeBron...

CHICAGO -- In Illinois, many can remember the "Golden Girls" from 1977; the first girl's state championship basketball team. That legendary team and their perfect season were made possibly by Title IX.Passed by Congress on June 23, 1972, Title IX is only 37 words long: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance."The law was met by resistance, but also provided opportunity for girls to play the games they loved at levels they never imagined.Amy Eschleman, now Chicago's first lady, was just 10 years old when Title IX was passed, but it didn't take long for her to realize it was a game changer."In elementary school there was a boys team but not a girls team," she recalled. She was the only freshman on the 1977 Sterling High team, dubbed the "Golden Girls," who put together a perfect season on their way to becoming the first girls state champions in the state...
