The number of active oil drilling rigs in the United States rose by 14 this week, climbing for the ninth consecutive week as oil demand soars. That number brings the total U.S. rig count up to 728 in total, according to data from Baker Hughes, an increase of 273, or about 60%, compared to the same point in 2021 and the most since the pandemic struck in March 2020 and wiped out demand for oil. Rig Count Infogram The new count comes as President Joe Biden has partially reversed course from his campaign pledges to crack down on fossil fuels. In recent months, Biden has urged oil and gas companies to ramp up domestic production, seeking to combat soaring prices and a spike in demand amid Russia’s war in Ukraine. ENERGY DEPARTMENT SPENDING $3.5B ON FOUR PLANTS TO REMOVE CARBON FROM ATMOSPHERE Oil prices climbed Friday, with futures for global benchmark Brent crude rising slightly to $112.84. Futures for U.S.-based West Texas Intermediate, meanwhile, settled at $113.23 by late Friday afternoon. Gas prices...
CHERRY HILL, N.J. (CBS) — More than 75 gas stations across New Jersey are lowering fuel prices on Friday in an effort to promote self-service. It’s all part of the “Fuel Your Way NJ” campaign that supports the “Motorist Fueling Choice and Convenience Act” which would allow New Jersey residents the option to pump their own gas if they wish. Supporters of the legislation say drivers could save $100 to $400 per year if the state allowed self-serve. READ MORE: Man Shot In Head, Killed While Driving SUV In North Philadelphia: Police“With the cost of gas prices continuing to rise, it’s taking a bigger and bigger bite out of people’s wallets,” said Sal Risalvato of Fuel Your Way NJ. “We want the public to know that one of the quickest ways we can reduce gas prices is to allow gas stations the ability to offer self-serve in New Jersey.” Risalvato adds gas stations are having difficulty hiring staff to fully man all their pumps. As a result, motorists are often inconvenienced when they are forced to wait in long lines...
The Environmental Protection Agency issued a waiver on Friday designed to expand the sale of ethanol-blended gasoline as part of President Joe Biden's strategy to bring down high fuel prices. The EPA's emergency waiver lifts restrictions on E15, gasoline containing 15% corn-based ethanol, allowing retailers across the country to sell the fuel between June and September. Current regulations restrict sales to limit emissions of smog-causing volatile organic compounds, although some cities are excepted from the rules. Biden announced intentions to lift the restrictions on April 12 during a visit to a bioprocessing plant in Iowa, the nation's top corn producer, in response to what the administration has dubbed "Putin's price hike." Gasoline prices have reached the highest nominal levels on record since the war in Ukraine began. The U.S. average was $4.10 per gallon for the week ending April 25, a slight rise over the previous week. DAILY ON ENERGY: GREEN GROUPS SAY COURT ORDER SHOULDN'T HOLD BIDEN DOWN ON LEASING PAUSE The EPA said Friday it issued the waiver "to counteract Russia’s unjustified, unprovoked,...

A protester holds a 'Save Us From The Energy Crisis' placard during a rally in London. British households face soaring energy bills from April 1 as the country's energy price cap rises by 54%.Vuk Valcic | Sopa Images | Lightrocket | Getty Images The number of English households in fuel poverty will double to 5 million from April 1, new research warned on Friday as Brits braced for their energy bills to increase by hundreds of pounds. The Resolution Foundation said that as a result of higher prices coming into force on Friday, 2.5 million households in England would be plunged into "fuel stress." Energy bills in Britain are set to surge from Friday, after Ofgem, the country's energy regulator, announced in February that it would increase its price cap by a record-breaking 54% from April 1. Ofgem's price cap limits how much households in the U.K. can be charged for energy utilities, and is reviewed twice a year.VIDEO3:2503:25Diversification of energy supply is 'absolutely critical,' says Cheniere EnergyCapital ConnectionBefore Friday, the price cap meant the average household's annual energy bill...
TIRANA, Albania (AP) — Demonstrators marched through Albania’s capital, Tirana, Friday and tried to block streets in other cities, in a third day of protests against recent price hikes that authorities blame on the war in Ukraine. Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government imposed price controls on fuel, and has urged Albanians to use their cars less after fuel prices rose 50% last week. Hundreds of people protested peacefully for about two hours outside Rama’s office in Tirana Friday, before proceeding to the city’s main Skanderbeg Square where many held a sit-down protest. Police prevented protesters from blocking main streets in the center. In at least six other cities protesters temporarily blocked roads, in some cases scuffling with police who detained scores of people. The fuel price hike has had a knock-on effect on food costs in the small Balkan country. Protesters accuse the government of profiting from the price hike by not reducing taxation. They have urged it to emulate neighboring countries — which have also been hit by global price hikes due to Russia’s war against Ukraine —...
BEIJING (AP) — Asian stock markets fell Monday and oil prices rose amid concern about a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine. Tokyo’s benchmark index fell by an unusually wide daily margin of 2.1%. Shanghai, Hong Kong and Seoul also retreated. Global crude prices added more than $1 per barrel in a sign of concern about possible supply disruptions. On Wall Street, the benchmark S&P 500 index tumbled 1.9% on Friday after the White House encouraged Americans to leave Ukraine within 48 hours. Other governments including Russia were pulling diplomats and their citizens out of the country. Russia is one of the biggest oil producers. Any military action that disrupts supplies could send shockwaves through energy markets and global industry. “Markets are belatedly waking up to the geopolitical risks posed by Russian military action against Ukraine,” Rabobank said in a report. The Nikkei 225 in Tokyo was down 2.1% to 27,117.18 at midday after being off 2.6% earlier. The Bank of Japan made an offer for unlimited government bond purchases on Monday, moving to curb a surge in long-term interest...

This has been a tough year to buy a new or used car in America. With COVID-19 factory shutdowns, semiconductor chip shortages, rising prices and supply chain issues, it’s been nothing but bad news for car shoppers. And for those who’ve waited, hoping Black Friday sales would bring some reprieve from high prices, we’re afraid that there aren’t many bargains to speak of. In ordinary times, Black Friday would be a busy yet fruitful time to shop for a new car because dealerships are motivated to discount outgoing models to make room for the newest model year. However, Edmunds data shows that overall new car inventory levels are down 77% compared to 2019, when the market was more typical. “The microchip shortage has forced inventory far below demand and vehicles are selling quicker than ever before,” said Jessica Caldwell, Edmunds’ executive director of insights. “In fact, many dealers are selling vehicles that haven’t even arrived on their lots yet.” Vehicles that are left tend to be in a more expensive trim or are saddled with dealer-added accessories that further...
In this article TRI-CAThe logo of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) at the headquarters.Omar Marques | LightRocket | Getty ImagesLONDON — OPEC and non-OPEC ministers will reconvene on Friday to discuss the next phase of oil production policy after a preliminary agreement was thought to have been blocked at the last minute the day before. The energy alliance, often referred to as OPEC+, will meet via videoconference on Friday afternoon to decide on whether to keep output policy unchanged or to ramp up supply further. The unexpected rescheduling of the meeting comes after the United Arab Emirates reportedly objected to a plan for an easing of cuts and their extension to the end of next year, according to Reuters. Oil prices moved on the news, rising slightly Thursday before losing momentum Friday as traders digested the implications. In U.S. morning trade, international Brent crude futures traded at $75.45 a barrel, down 0.5% for the session, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures stood at $74.89, around 0.4% lower. The OPEC alliance had agreed in principle to increase supply...
DAX, FTSE 100, CAC-40 and Ibex 35 go up today pending the bonds After a tense session last Friday, where European stocks picked up Thursday’s falls in Wall Stret, the European stock market starts the month of March with rises and volatility falls. The European and US stock markets will continue to be very aware of the behavior of the bonds whose prices rebounded during the last day. Asian markets are also rebounding this morning. The securities that registered the most movements at the opening this Monday are Deutsche Bank (+ 2.10%) andDeutsche Telekom (0.31%), followed by ArcelorMittal which adds 2.71%; Lloyds Banking (+ 0.90%) and Telecom It, with increases of 1.17%. From Link Securities they predict that inflation is very likely to rise sharply in the coming months, largely a consequence of the base effect -in 2020 during the months of spring lockdown, many prices of goods and services fell sharply- and demand dammed, which should be satisfied once restrictions on mobility and the activity of many companies, especially in the service sector, are lifted, as the vaccination process...

Commodity analysts say that a recent rise in inflation-adjusted yields, or real yields, and a firmer U.S. dollar this month have combined to weigh on gold prices. “Gold prices are also slipping again, as real US yields break a three day losing streak which has weighed on the dollar and supported the yellow metal,” wrote Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at Oanda Europe, in a daily research note. February gold  was off $29.10, or 1.5%, to trade at $1,836.90 an ounce, after a decline of less than 0.1% on Thursday. Video: Wall Street points to lower open following mixed session (CNBC) Wall...
