A man has died after being gored by a bull in front of his wife and one of his two daughters at a Spanish festival. Oscar Rodriguez Calleja, 50, was rushed to hospital after being speared in the groin by a 84-stone bull called Rodillero at Fiesta del Verdejo festival in the small town of La Seca, Valladolid, northern Spain, but medics were unable to save him. Footage of the incident which happened on Sunday 1 May showed the moments before the bull dashed out of its wooden box, immediately taking a right turn towards the crowds stood behind barriers. The father-of-two was then lifted by the bull's horns as he stood behind the railings, then held up and dragged for a few seconds. Rodillero pulled Oscar while with its horns before dumping him on the floor as onlookers watched in disbelief.  His loved ones suffered panic attacks and were treated at the scene before his wife was taken to a health centre. Oscar had travelled from his home in the nearby municipality of Nava del Rey to take part in...
The 2022 editions of the twin Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festivals are nearly behind us and after a two-year absence due to the pandemic the festival came back with a lineup that included headliners Harry Styles, Billie Eilish and the Weekend with Swedish House Mafia. The festival, which happened April 15-17 and April 22-24 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio and included performances by Megan Thee Stallion, Disclosure, Danny Elfman, Louis the Child, Doja Cat, Giveon, Anitta and others. While the lineup remains the same both weekends, not everything stays the same during the twin weekends. These are a few of the differences between weekend one and two at Coachella. Different surprises and lineup changes The biggest surprise from Weekend 1 was the appearance of Arcade Fire, who played a stellar Mojave Tent set the festival’s opening evening. However, they didn’t return for weekend 2. On Weekend 1, Harry Styles performed with one of his idols on the first night of Coachella as he brought country star Shania Twain to duet on a pair of her songs and...
While festival-goers waited in lines for the usual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival services such as food, merchandise, Ferris wheel rides, lockers and bathrooms, there was a new line for people to join: NFT redemptions. While Coachella has become a pillar of where to catch the next big acts in music worldwide, it’s also embraced the latest tech trends such as augmented reality, gamification and NFTs. NFT, which stands for a non-fungible token, a unique digital item that can be bought and sold and take many forms. (Photo by Kevin Sullivan, Contributing Photographer)  This year, the festival offered every paying attendee a free In Bloom NFT, a digital image of a flower that bloomed each Friday of the festival’s twin weekends. Six of those NFTs came with special benefits such as VIP upgrades, 2023 weekend passes, Goldenvoice concert tickets, and...
When actor Terry Crews watched the infamous slap at the 94th Academy Awards ceremony, it felt to him like a “blast from the past.” His past. He saw who he once was in Will Smith’s slap of comedian Chris Rock over a joke about Smith’s wife. (Crews said he’s done worse.) He also saw himself and who he’s since become in Rock’s ability to control his emotions and hold it together in that moment. “Chris Rock saved Hollywood that day,” said Crews, host of the popular TV show “America’s Got Talent.” The former NFL player has starred in numerous movies and TV shows, including “Everybody Hates Chris,” also starring Rock, and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” Crews drew the parallels to a crowd of hundreds on the final day of the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, where he spoke about his new memoir, “Tough: My Journey to True Power,” which details his quest to find what it really means to be tough. “The way I lived my life was like a revenge flick. It was all about settling scores,” Crews said to...

Writing, Amanda Gorman told the crowd, often reminds her of gridlock. “Poetry can be like being stuck on the 405 in traffic,” she said. “You know where you’re going and you know you have to be there by 9 a.m., but are you going to make it? We don’t know.” The audience roared a knowing laughter. Gorman — the first American National Youth Poet Laureate, who burst onto the national stage last year after reciting a poem at President Joe Biden’s inauguration — was a headliner Saturday at the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, where she shared a new poem with the crowd on the first day of the event. The two-day festival, which returned to its home at the University of Southern California after two years of virtual events, features food trucks, book vendors and more than 550 authors, chefs, artists, celebrities and musicians, including Janelle Monáe, Billy Porter, Danny Trejo, Don Winslow, Ziggy Marley and Kal Penn. Now in its 27th year, the festival includes panels, discussions and performances touching on dozens of topics, including crime fiction,...
If your plans include curling up on the couch and watching the second weekend of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival from the comfort of your living room, be aware that Weekend 2’s Coachella YouTube stream is not the same as last weekend. For Weekend 1, Coachella’s YouTube featured multiple channels streaming sets from the music festival, generally live or close to it, with a few interviews and produced segments in between. For Weekend 2, the main YouTube stream transforms into Coachella Curated, which leans much more heavily on interviews, mini documentaries and produced pieces. The good news: If you want to watch headliners Harry Styles, Billie Eilish or Swedish House Mafia with The Weekend, you will be able to see those sets. They’re all part of the broadcast, as are Anitta, Karol G and what’s expected to be Brockhampton’s final performance for a long while. There are also two bonus channels that will offer a handful of live sets as well including Danny Elfman. But if you were hoping to watch Megan Thee Stallion’s full performance after last...
The Gilroy Garlic Festival is ending its decades-long run due to pandemic uncertainty and lack of funding, organizers said this week. Garlic Festival Association Past President Tom Cline and Vice President-Elect Cindy Fellows said “lingering uncertainties” from the pandemic and “prohibitive insurance requirements by the City of Gilroy” has resulted in the festival being cancelled indefinitely, according to a statement obtained by the Gilroy Dispatch. “Obviously, we are left frustrated and disappointed,” the statement read. “Our world-renowned festival has helped showcase Gilroy and the South County for 42 years while raising many millions of dollars for local charities.” Cline also pointed to funding problems, saying that the Garlic Festival Association hasn’t received any revenue since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 to July 2021. Smaller events are still on the schedule for 2022, with details to be announced soon, according to the festival’s website. Since its founding in 1979, the festival — one of the most famous food festivals in the nation — has raised more than $12 million for schools and local nonprofits. The festival, normally held at...
This Sunday, you can walk on to the San Francisco Giants baseball field for free, without a ticket. There won’t be any baseball players there. But you just might learn something. For the first time since 2019 due to the easing of the COVID pandemic, the Bay Area Science Festival, the largest educational event in Northern California, is returning with in-person activities. Organizers expect 25,000 people to attend events starting Thursday and continuing until April 30. The two main events are at from 11 am to 4 pm Sunday at Oracle Park in San Francisco, and 11 am to 4 pm on Saturday April 30 at the Cal State University East Bay Hayward campus. Dozens of major institutions, including Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCSF, museums, park districts and large companies, will run hands-on exhibits at locations around the Bay Area. Featured at the ballpark on Sunday: a Mars Rover, mini water tornadoes, robots and exhibits about how vaccines work. Organizers say the event is needed for kids now more than ever, as the world confronts challenges from climate change to new...
This is the horrific moment a woman was left fighting for her life after crossing in front of two horses with her seven-year-old granddaughter during a famous Spanish horse race. Felisa Castano, 69, remained seriously ill in a hospital intensive care unit today after being hit at 3pm as she tried to walk across the street with the youngster as the animals charged towards them in Arroyo de la Luz, western Spain. Her granddaughter is under observation in another hospital but is said to be improving.  Felisa Castano, 69, and her granddaughter, 7, were injured in Arroyo de la Luz, western Spain The highlight of the religious festival, held in honour of the Virgin of the Light since the 13th century, are the spectacular horse races. There’s a science lab in the middle of the 2022 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival — and it’s all part of a massive art installation. As ambient sounds vibrate all around, a screen projects colorful moving images of what appears to be living cells onto a screen inside one of three tunnels that make up “Circular Dimensions x Microscape,” which was created for the festival by local artist Cristopher Cichocki. Above the tunnels is a rainbow-shaped five-story-tall wall made out of white PVC tubes that all make up the stunning piece in the middle of the main field. The sizzling trio of supermodels set pulses racing as they proved that the world-famous event is just as star-studded in the audience as onstage. Shanina, 31, put her amply endowed cleavage on display, tearing off her denim jacket to expose her sky blue matching bralette as she strutted her stuff in Indio, California. IF you missed out on Coachella tickets this year, Absolut Vodka is currently hosting a festival themed party in the metaverse. I jumped into the virtual party, hosted in Decentraland, to see if it was anything like a real festival. 5There's a party happening in a giant vodka bottle in the metaverseCredit: Decentraland 5The empty night club had spinning poles and pictures of real womenCredit: Decentraland Before I could begin exploring, I had to enter my date of birth to prove I was over 21. Then came a list of rules, including a warning to "Consume your drinks responsibly. Don't drink and teleport!". Fortunately, metaverse vodka isn't real and has literally no effects so there was no risk of irresponsible virtual drinking. The idea is that you 'grab a virtual drink' at the bar and then teleport to an 'anti-gravity dance floor' in a giant bottle of vodka. MONTEREY — It’s tricky to capture the beauty and power of the ocean using words alone. That’s why this weekend’s Monterey Ocean Arts Festival is enlisting both artists and scientists to celebrate and learn about the beauty and power of the sea. SpectorDance hosts its second annual Monterey Ocean Arts Festival Saturday from 1-4 p.m. at the Monterey Museum of Art. The event will feature performances and visual art presentations from over 180 local youth artists. Festival-goers can also learn about science and make their own art with local scientific organizations. Talks from scientists and free admission to the Monterey Museum of Art will round out the afternoon. Fran Spector Atkins, who founded the festival, began using dance to address social issues about 25 years ago. In 2010, she formed a collaboration with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute to choreograph performances about ocean science. In these pieces, which were first presented at the Smithsonian in 2013, performers danced to music mixed with sound bites from ocean scientists. The second annual Monterey Ocean Arts Festival will feature performances and visual...
