SAN JOSE – If he and the Sharks are close to an agreement on a new contract, center Tomas Hertl on Monday wasn’t saying. A week before the NHL trade deadline, Hertl didn’t divulge too many specifics regarding his camp’s negotiations with the Sharks on a new deal that could keep him in San Jose for the rest of his career. Hertl said the dialogue between his agent, Craig Oster, and Sharks assistant general manager Joe Will has continued. The Sharks are trying to re-sign Hertl but would presumably need to know sometime this week if the two sides can come to terms before they speak with other teams about a trade before the March 21 deadline. Hertl said he wasn’t aware of a deadline on his end to make a decision, adding that he’ll be talking with Oster again soon, “so we will know more. But I don’t want to give details because I don’t want to put anyone in a tough position, especially myself, because I don’t know everything. They talk because I’m still just playing hockey and...
Thomas Krol believed he was going to the Olympics four years ago. The speedskater finished third at the Dutch trials, and then politics intervened. The national federation named Kai Verbij to the team for Pyeongchang. Verbij was injured at the trials and unable to compete in the 1,000 meters, but he was chosen over Krol. Making it worse for Krol is that he and Verbij are best friends. Verbij headed to South Korea, finishing sixth in the 1,000, while Krol went home to his couch. That’s how competitive speedskating is in the Netherlands, where it’s second only to soccer in national popularity. The Dutch have won a total of 121 Olympic speedskating medals, including 42 golds. Just qualifying for the Dutch team is brutal because the talent level is so high, with many competitors first having honed their skills as children skating on the country’s frozen lakes and canals. “If one falls away, the other one is already standing ready,” said Jorrit Bergsma, a two-time Olympic medalist in the 10,000. Krol added, “It’s not just one country that skates really...
EMMA RADUCANU carried on where she left off in New York by beating Sloane Stephens 6-0 2-6 6-1 in the Australian Open first round. The US Open champion, 19, is making her debut appearance in Melbourne following her spectacular breakthrough last summer. 4Emma Raducanu returned to winning ways as she beat Sloane Stephens in the Australian Open first roundCredit: EPA And she was pitted against another Flushing Meadows winner in 2017 hero Stephens. But the No17 seed, who lost her only warm-up match 6-0 6-1 last week, flew out of the blocks. Rattled Stephens - forced to take her watch off before the match started - would have known just 17 MINUTES had passed when her opponent wrapped up the first set. The American reset in the second set, though, forcing an early break to take the advantage. But too many errors in the fourth game ensured Raducanu levelled it up at 2-2 before the Brit handed the break back immediately. Stephens, though, ran away with the second set by winning the next four games to...

(CNN)The Pittsburgh Steelers survived a late Chicago Bears fightback to chalk up a fourth successive win with a 29-27 victory on Monday Night Football.A series of controversial calls marked a game that -- at 20-6 in the third quarter -- had looked set to be a comfortable home victory for the Steelers, but an inspired fourth quarter performance from Bears rookie quarterback Justin Fields left the hosts facing a shock turnaround. The Steelers retook the lead for the final time through Chris Boswell's 40-yard field goal 26 seconds from time but were still forced to endure a nail-biting potential 65-yard game winning kick from Bears kicker Cairo Santos. To Pittsburgh's relief, Santos' kick dropped just short -- securing the win and making it 19 straight victories at Heinz Field for the Steelers when playing on a Monday night. Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt dazzled on the defensive side with seven tackles and three sacks -- his second of the game on Fields taking him to an incredible 60 career sacks in just 69 games, the fourth fastest player in history to reach...
ANTONIO CONTE issued a stark ultimatum to his Tottenham players — dedicate yourself to achieving my winning mentality or continue to wallow in mediocrity. The new Spurs boss — a title winner with his previous three clubs — surprised many by taking over a side who have not been champions of England for 60 years, nor won any silverware since 2008. 2Antonio Conte has warned his players they are not at the right physical and mental levelCredit: Getty 2Conte barks out instructions with Cristian Romero (left) and Son Heung-min (centre) paying close attention And Conte pulled no punches ahead of his first Premier League game in charge, at Everton tomorrow, when he accused his mid-table players of not being good enough mentally or physically. When it was put to him that Tottenham’s poor mentality had been a long-term barrier to achievement, Conte nodded and smiled. The Italian said: “For sure, this aspect we have to work to improve. It’s not easy because you have to work every day and you have to breathe a winning mentality every day. “You don’t...

HAMBURG, Germany (AP) — Thomas Müller scored the winning goal as Germany recovered from a goal down to beat Romania 2-1 and continue its winning start under new coach Hansi Flick in World Cup qualifying on Friday. Romania took the lead with a ninth-minute goal from Ianis Hagi, the first Germany conceded in four games under Flick. Germany bounced back as Serge Gnabry leveled early in the second half before Müller’s winning header in the 81st. Germany extended its lead at the top of Group J to six points from North Macedonia and Armenia and has won all four games since Flick took charge following a last-16 exit at the European Championship under his predecessor Joachim Löw. Germany started strongly in front of a crowd of 25,000 in Hamburg and was awarded a penalty early on when Timo Werner and Andrei Burca tangled in the box. After a long wait for video review, with Joshua Kimmich standing over the ball on the penalty spot, the decision was overturned. Germany still seemed stunned by the turnaround when Hagi, son of...

By: KDKA-TV News Staff PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Despite repeated regular season success and qualifying for the postseason, both the Pittsburgh Penguins and Pittsburgh Steelers have recently left a lot to be desired among the city’s fans as they have struggled to win playoff games. Between the Penguins and the Steelers, since winning their last respective championships, the two teams have combined to have a losing record of 14-23. Penguins Playoff Woes The Penguins’ recent struggles have come in the past few postseason ventures on the heels of their 2016 and 2017 Stanley Cup titles. Since winning the Stanley Cup in those two postseasons, the team has gone 9-16, losing their past three playoff series’, and now trail the New York Islanders 3 games to 2 and are facing elimination, needing to win the next two games to avoid falling for a fourth straight series. In 2018, the Penguins defeated the Flyers in the first round in six games. The current streak of losing playoff series’ then began, with losing to the eventual Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals in six games...
The Houston Rockets’ losing streak continues after a John Wall layup was blocked by Lu Dort to give the Oklahoma City Thunder the win Sunday. “Houston, we have a problem” is a bit too cliche, but it is the absolute truth right now. Entering Sunday’s slate of games, the Houston Rockets held a 19-game losing streak and look destined to earn the first overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft Lottery. Those odds certainly improved, but not without a bit of drama. The Rockets were down 114-112 to the Oklahoma City Thunder, and star point guard John Wall looked to send the contest into overtime. Wall drove to the basket on what looked like an easy layup attempt, but Thunder guard Lu Dort blocked the shot from behind to seal the loss for Houston. The Patriots aren’t dead yet. But they’re damn close. The most dominant franchise in the history of the NFL still has a pulse, but it’s faint and fading. The Patriots — who’ve won the AFC East title the past 11 years and in 17 of the past 19, winning six Super Bowls along the way — enter Sunday’s game against the Cardinals (6-4) struggling with a 4-6 record and with their playoff chances in serious jeopardy. Last Sunday’s loss to the Texans left the Patriots with a sixth loss for the first time in a season since 2009. The last time they failed to make the playoffs was 2008, when quarterback Tom Brady was lost for the season with a knee injury in the opener. Even that year, they finished 11-5 and missed out on the postseason on tiebreakers. With the Bills (7-3) leading the AFC East and the Dolphins (6-4) next, the Patriots’ chances of winning the division are almost nonexistent. As far as earning one of the three wild-card spots, the Patriots are trailing four teams — the...
The National Guard has been deployed on the streets of Philadelphia to prepare for possible unrest as votes continue to be counted in the presidential election.  Joe Biden all but declared the White House was his last night in a brief public appearance but is yet to formally be declared the winner of the dramatic race which has divided with United States. The counting process continues in the key states of Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona and Nevada, where Biden is expanding his lead against President Donald Trump. Pennsylvania alone would take him to 273 electoral college votes, while if Arizona and Nevada declare before the Keystone state, he would hit 270.  If he takes all four, which appears very likely, he would have 302 electoral college votes, the same as Trump, but in contrast, a thumping popular vote majority of more than four million. Pennsylvania could be called today, as could Nevada and possibly Arizona, while Georgia is so close that it is certain to have a recount. In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania's largest city, the National Guard patrolled the streets in anticipation...
Now that Louisville has ended its losing streak the Cardinals are focused on their next challenge: winning consecutive games. The Cardinals (2-4, 1-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) were able to breath a sigh of relief after a 48-16 pummeling of Florida State to snap a four-game slide. To mount a modest winning streak Louisville needs to get past Virginia Tech (4-2, 4-2) in Saturday’s inaugural ACC meeting between the teams. Winning seems to have given the Cardinals new motivation. “Our guys’ focus has been better, the consistency has been better,” Cardinals coach Scott Satterfield said this week. “There’s one or two plays in the Pitt game, the Georgia Tech game and the Notre Dame game where you’re right there. But that’s all it takes is one or two plays.” Louisville made quite a few plays against FSU, averaging 9.3 yards per snap while rolling up 569 on offense. The defense yielded 406 but registered two sacks, an interception and its second-lowest point total this season. “Anytime you make a couple of plays, that builds your confidence,” defensive coordinator Bryan Brown said...
BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Ravens head coach John Harbaugh does not like to answer questions that involve comparisons, especially when asked to compare performances from the past to the present. Harbaugh’s focus is forward, and he’s passed that perspective on to his players. Running back Mark Ingram II and the Ravens offense has looked a bit disjointed in recent weeks. The team is winning games, but the offense hasn’t performed in the high-gear efficiency of last year when they set an NFL all-time rushing record. After five games, the Ravens consider themselves a work in progress, and Ingram’s not up to comparing this season to last year. “2019 was a historic year and we just had a lot of things going for us,” Ingram said. “2020 is different and the 2020 Ravens are different. We just have to find ways to continue to improve, we just have to find ways to continue to get better. We know that we haven’t played our best as an offense yet, and we’re striving for excellence.” The Ravens look to extend their winning streak when they...
TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's next prime minister, Yoshihide Suga, said he wanted to continue with the policies of predecessor Shinzo Abe, and push structural reforms while removing barriers between the bureaucracy. Suga made the comments in a speech soon after he was overwhelmingly voted in as the next leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, which virtually assures him of becoming the next prime minister, given the party's majority in parliament.
