City leaders have long lamented the proliferation and accessibility of illegal guns with crime again on the rise. D.C. police often highlight all the arrests they make for possession of them, too. But the number of people charged and convicted by prosecutors for having them is, sometimes substantially, smaller. “About a third of all of MPD’s gun arrests don’t get papered by the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” said Ward 6 Council member Charles Allen during a town hall focused on crime in his ward Tuesday night. “Meaning they don’t move forward to be charged. That’s concerning and I want to know why.” Allen said that’s information his office just received last week. D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine wasn’t ready to substantiate that claim, and a representative from the U.S. Attorney’s Office suggested that the real number might be about half that — around 15% or so. It could be because of “things like arrests that may not pass constitutional muster,” Magdalena Acevedo said. But she also said the evidence needed to make an arrest and seize the gun doesn’t need to...

ONE of women’s biggest concerns is if they are leaving it too late to start a family. But a new test could help make those decisions, revealing if a woman is at risk of an early menopause. 1It may take just a blood sample to reveal if a woman will go through the menopause earlyCredit: Alamy Most women go through the menopause between 45 and 55 years old.  But some women face it under the age of 40 - most with no prior warning.  Considering women typically have their first child at 30, an early menoapuse - which could happen as early as the 20s - could spell tragedy for women looking to expand their family. Scientists said to find out a woman's odds of a premature menopause, all it would require is a piece of DNA, taken from either spit or blood. It comes after they identified 300 gene variations that influence the time at which a woman goes into the menopause. For example, women who naturally lack an active Chek2 gene reach menopause on average 3.5 years later...
Lindsey Gamard, 38, quit her job at a technology company during the pandemic.Courtesy: Lindsey Garnard Lindsey Gamard, 38, knew she wanted to quit her job when she saw many of her co-workers leaving. "It was like a sinking ship," said Gamard, a data analyst who lives in San Tan Valley, Arizona. It didn't help that her employer, a tech company, wanted all of its employees to start back in the office at least three days a week last May. By Sandee LaMotte and Naomi Thomas | CNN The news flashed across the country — mask-free at last! People who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 no longer have to wear masks inside or outside, nor do they have to stay 6 feet away from others, according to new guidance released Thursday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Does that mean those Americans vaccinated at least two weeks ago — meaning full immunity has kicked in — can throw their masks in the air and hug all in celebration? Not quite. You do have to mask up on public transportation or if required by laws or regulations — that would apply to hospitals, nursing homes and other health care settings, and even some local businesses and workplaces. Kids still have to mask up to go to school. Then there is this warning: “If you have a condition or are taking medications that weaken your immune system, you may NOT be fully protected even if you are fully vaccinated. Talk to your healthcare provider,” the CDC said in the...

Fox News host Tucker Carlson launched a tirade Tuesday against attempts to cancel the late children’s book author Dr. Seuss. Carlson argued that, despite claims to the contrary, Seuss was as far from “racist” as one could possibly be. (RELATED: Joy Behar Backpedals After Calling For Tucker Carlson To Be ‘Tied Up And Put In A Corner’) WATCH: Carlson began with a clip from a few years earlier in which former Democratic Georgia state Rep. LaDawn Jones had argued that Seuss was a racist, basing her findings primarily on “stereotypical” imagery in his illustrations. “Now at the time, what you just heard seemed incomprehensible, in fact as we noted, kind of demented,” Carlson said, adding that he thought of all the criticisms one could make about Seuss, “racist” might be the least accurate. “Dr. Seuss was not a racist. Dr. Seuss was a preachy liberal, he was an evangelist against bigotry. He wrote an entire shelf of books against racism, and not in a subtle way. They were clearly, explicitly against racism. That was the whole point of...

(CBS4) – The State of Colorado and Jefferson County have stopped using the COVID testing company Curative after the FDA issued a warning that some of the company’s tests were coming back with inaccurate results. The company first started doing tests at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds before Thanksgiving, and at the time hundreds waited in lines there. (credit: CBS) Curative also administered testing at long-term care facilities and prisons in the state, as well as other locations. “If you received a negative test at any point in time from Jan. 13 until today you will likely want to go and have it repeated,” said Christine Billings, spokeswoman for the Jeffco Office Of Pandemic Response.
