(CNN)Human-induced climate change made the extreme rainfall that triggered deadly floods in South Africa in April heavier and twice as likely to happen, a rapid analysis published Friday by the World Weather Attribution project shows. Parts of South Africa experienced more than 350mm of rainfall in two days, causing destructive floods in KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape provinces, killing at least 435 people and damage to property worth around $1.57 billion. The Port of Durban, Africa's largest port, was forced to halt operations due to the floods, causing disruptions in supply chains."Most people who died in the floods lived in informal settlements, so again we are seeing how climate change disproportionately impacts the most vulnerable people," said Friederike Otto from the Grantham Institute at Imperial College London, who leads the World Weather Attribution (WWA) project."However, the flooding of the Port of Durban, where African minerals and crops are shipped worldwide, is also a reminder that there are no borders for climate impacts," she said. "What happens in one place can have substantial consequences elsewhere."Read MoreA general view of containers that fell...
(CNN)Not all plants wither when faced with harsh conditions. Extremophyte plants not only survive in dry, salty or cold places, but actually thrive in them. One of these plants flourishes in a place with extremely high salt content, according to a new study published Monday in the journal Nature Plants.Understanding what makes extremophyte plants tick could help researchers to engineer a similar response in crucial crops that are at risk due to the climate crisis. "With climate change, we can't expect the environment to stay the same," said lead study author Ying Sun, a postdoctoral researcher at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego, in a statement. "Our crops are going to have to adapt to these rapidly changing conditions. If we can understand the mechanisms that plants use to tolerate stress, we can help them do it better and faster." Built for harsh conditions Read MoreTypically, plants slow things down metabolically when the conditions around them don't support normal growth. They grow fewer leaves and roots. The plants' pores close to retain water. This strategy works for...

Wim Hof sounds like a man with a death wish. How else to explain his history of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in just shorts and sandals, running a half-marathon above the Arctic Circle barefoot, or going swimming in water so cold his corneas froze? The 62-year-old grandfather, who goes by the nickname The Iceman, says the opposite is true. His wish is to live, 'to really live', he tells me. He performs the splits on our Zoom call to illustrate how much verve you end up with, in your 60s, if you follow his methods. Crikey. His shorts today are very short. Where to look?! Afterwards, he beams into the camera, all beard and beany hat ('my wife loves me in my beany hat'). Bear Grylls looks like a staid marketing executive compared with this guy. Hof is an extreme endurance enthusiast whose antics emerging himself in ice have won him 26 Guinness World Records. He is also into breathing techniques, yoga, extreme balancing and motivational speaking, and has wrapped this all up into the highly marketable Wim Hof Method. Wim...
A woman whose husband tragically died in a freak accident has gone viral on social media after using dark humour to cope with his passing. Bonnie Caldwell, who lives in New Zealand, admitted that she was furious when her husband Matt failed to reply to her text messages while on a boys' trip, but thought his lack of contact was likely due to a hangover. Posting on TikTok, the 26-year-old, said that it wasn't until she received a message from his brother urging her to come to his house that she learnt Matt had died in a freak accident. She has gone viral after posting a video entitled: Me getting sh***y because my husband was on a boys trip and wasn't replying to me.  The clip then cut to an image of his photo with a candle alongside it, with the caption: 'He was dead'.  Bonnie has racked up over 3 million views on the clip captioned 'I mean, he could have at least given me a heads up. #darkhumour'  Bonnie Caldwell, 26, (pictured) who lives in New Zealand, has...
New Jersey-based attorney Alina Habba, who joined Donald Trump’s legal team in 2021, has represented the former president on a variety of cases — including his lawsuits against his niece Mary Trump and journalist E. Jean Carroll. Habba has drawn a lot of attention in Trumpworld because of her in-your-face antics, which — according to Daily Beast reporters José Pagliery and Asawin Suebsaeng — are so over-the-top that she has even alienated other members of Trump’s legal team. “Her name is Alina Habba, and — almost out of nowhere — the relatively unknown New Jersey lawyer went from representing a college student ticked off at COVID-19 virtual learning to being one of the top attorneys defending the twice-impeached former president in some of the country’s most high-profile cases,” Pagliery and Suebsaeng explain in an article published on March 21. “There’s just one problem for Habba: There’s hardly anyone in the Trump legal universe who can stand her.” Axios’ Jonathan Swan reported on Habba’s tactics in an article published on January 20. Similarly, Pagliery and Suebsaeng note some of the criticisms...

An extreme 'ultra-hot' Jupiter-like exoplanet where temperatures reach 5,760°F (3,200°C) has a layered atmosphere surprisingly similar to Earth's, a study reveals.  Experts in Sweden and Switzerland have discovered more about the 'complex and exotic atmosphere' of exoplanet WASP-189b, using high-resolution spectroscopy. The gas giant, located 322 light years from Earth, was discovered orbiting its bright host star HD 133112 by the Wide Angle Search for Planets (WASP) project in 2018.  Now, experts reveal WASP-189b's atmosphere contains 'an exotic cocktail' of titanium oxide, iron, titanium, chromium, vanadium, magnesium and manganese.    WASP-189b has previously been described as one of the 'most extreme planets in the universe' as it has surface temperatures hot enough to vaporise iron.     More than one and a half times as large as Jupiter, WASP-189b is 20 times closer to its host star than Earth is to our Sun.  Because the planet is so close to its host star, a year lasts just 2.7 days.  An extreme 'ultra-hot' Jupiter-like exoplanet where temperatures reach 5,760°F (3,200°C) has a layered atmosphere surprisingly similar to Earth's, a study reveals This is an...
The boss of Pornhub has spoken out for the first time since his unfinished $16million Montreal mansion was burned to rubble last year. 46-year-old Feras Antoon's dream manor was reduced to ashes in April last year after a suspected arson attack on the property. Montreal police were called around 11.30pm on April 25, 2021, in response to reports of two people breaking into the construction area of the home.  It took nearly three hours and 80 firefighters to put out the three-alarm fire that raged on until 2.30am.  And now in a rare interview, Antoon has revealed that he believes extremist religious groups could have been behind the blaze.  ‹ Slide me › 46-year-old Feras Antoon's dream $16million Montreal manor, which backed onto 'Mafia Row', was reduced to ashes in April last year after a suspected arson attack on the property  Speaking to Vanity Fair, he said: 'Could the extreme religious groups have incited and encouraged someone to do this? The past seven years have been the hottest on record – and the rate at which sea levels are rising is accelerating, UN experts warn.  The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) said 2021 was likely to be the fifth, sixth or seventh hottest in records dating to 1850.  The average global temperature from 2002 to 2021 was 1.01C above pre-industrial levels, the scientists said, while 2021 itself has averaged 1.09C higher.   In its State of the Climate report, the WMO said sea level rise has increased from an average of 2.1mm a year between 1993-2000 to 4.4mm between 2013-2021, mostly due to the faster loss of ice from glaciers and ice sheets. People enjoy the hot weather on Brighton beach on July 18, the warmest day of the year with temperatures soaring above 31C across England and Wales Secretary general Petteri Taalas said extreme events were 'the new normal', with mounting evidence of human-induced climate change. At the current rate of increase in greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere, temperatures by the end of the century would be far in excess of...

The family of a kickboxer who died after being knocked out in an organised bout today raised concerns at her inquest that she was mismatched with a 'much bigger' competitor. 'Slim' Saeideh Aletaha's opponent Janie Morgan was 'very clearly stronger' and 'more muscled', the late amateur fighter's family claim. Ms Aletaha, 26, collapsed in a bathroom after she took a blow to the head during the third round of her bout with 'top heavy' 34-year-old personal trainer Ms Morgan at the showcase event. She was rushed to Southampton General Hospital, Hants, but tragically died on November 16, 2019, a day after the Fast and Furious Fight Series contest in the city. The Loughborough University graduate, who was born into a religious and educated family in Iran, wanted to prove to people that a 'Muslim Lady' can compete in extreme sports even if she is wearing a Hijab. The product design engineer's family today told of their 'devastation' at losing her so far away from home as her inquest opened at Winchester Coroner's Court, Hants. Her brothers, Amir and Ali, watched...
Ford is using two robotic test drivers – affectionately named Shelby and Miles – to trial its vehicles in extreme temperatures. The robots are conducting tests in environmental conditions that are too treacherous for any human worker to endure. Shelby and Miles can operate at temperatures ranging from -40°F to 176°F (-40°C to 80°C) as well as at extreme altitudes, Ford says.  Their robotic legs extend to the accelerator, brake and clutch pedals, with one arm positioned to change gear and the other used to start and stop the engine.  The tests are taking place at Ford's secretive 'weather factory' in Cologne, Germany – a building the size of a football pitch that's dedicated to R&D work.  The facility includes massive 1.2-megawatt wind turbines, air pressure containers, snow machines and a wind tunnel with wind speeds of up to 155mph.  Ford’s has created two state-of-the-art robot test drivers to ensure its vehicles can withstand the toughest conditions on the planet. The robots have been created to help take the strain of adverse environmental conditions Ford's weather factory helps ensure drivers can...
Daily News (7/26/21) on Ben & Jerry's withdrawal from the Occupied Territories: "Very pleased are the BDS crowd, Israel-haters and assorted antisemites, but it's an ice-cream headache for Unilever." Ben & Jerry's decision to halt its operations in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and in Jerusalem has pro-Israel editors working overtime. The New York Daily News (7/26/21) celebrated counter-boycotts of the ice cream brand, including the state's pension system considering cutting ties with the brand's parent company, Unilever, because of a 2016 executive order against the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement. The tabloid's editorial board, sounding like a sidekick standing behind a gang enforcer, said, "No firm should want to be on that very naughty list." The New York Post found a brand worker who quit over the West Bank pull out (7/22/21), and a grocery store that is taking the ice cream off its shelves (7/19/21). New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo made waves as the first US governor to take executive action against the BDS movement, but the Post (7/24/21) complained that he's not attacking Ben & Jerry's swiftly...
(CNN)Greenland is experiencing its most significant melting event of the year as temperatures in the Arctic surge. The amount of ice that melted on Tuesday alone would be enough to cover the entire state of Florida in two inches of water. It's the third instance of extreme melting on the continent in the past decade, during which time the melting has stretched farther inland than the entire satellite era, which began in the 1970s. Greenland lost more than 8.5 billion tons of surface mass on Tuesday, and 18.4 billion tons since Sunday, according to the Denmark Meteorological Institute. While this week's total ice loss is not as extreme as a similar event in 2019 — a record melt year — the area of the ice sheet that's melting is larger."It's a significant melt," Ted Scambos, a senior research scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado, told CNN. "July 27th saw most of the eastern half of Greenland from the northern tip all the way to the southern tip mostly melted, which is unusual." A...
