A civil servant has revealed how he managed to travel more than 1,200 miles from London on a train in just 24 hours. Jo Kibble, who works for Ealing Council, wanted to see what the furthest point he could get from St Pancras in 24 hours, ending up in the southern Italian station of Bovo Marina.   Six months ago the travel enthusiast did the same challenge instead by bus and ended up 260 miles from his London starting point in Morecambe, Lancashire - with much more impressive results the second time.  Taking to Twitter he shared the step-by-step of his journey, with the 24-hours starting as soon as the first train departed London. He left St Pancras at 7.01am on Wednesday and arrived at Bova Marina - the southern most station in Italy - at 8am the next day. As Italy is an hour ahead of the UK - the total journey time was 23 hours and 59 minutes.    Jo Kibble, who works for Ealing Council, wanted to see what the furthest point he could get from St Pancras (pictured) ...
SANTA CLARA — Raheem Mostert remains the leader in the 49ers’ running back clubhouse. The incumbent – and insistent – starter has 31 carries in full-team work through seven practices. He hasn’t always been the first-string running back, however. Fantasy football tip: The 49ers will split carries among their vast options and not yield a 1,000-yard rusher for the fifth straight season under coach Kyle Shanahan. Because Mostert wearrs a brace on his right knee, it caught some observers’ attention, even though he’s practiced with that brace for years. He fired off a Tweet last Thursday night insisting: “I am NOT injured and to the media trying to make something out of NOTHING, I won’t allow it. I wear a knee brace in practice for PREVENTION and for my LONGEVITY in this league. … I won’t allow you to put me into your ‘hole’ of being old, washed up and injured. I’m just getting started!!” Could rookie Trey Sermon start, instead? Because the 49ers rotate running backs — and wide receivers and tight ends...
More On: new york giants Giants coach talks vaccinations Critical piece of Giants’ 2021 plan is far from a sure thing Giants enigmatic veteran facing make-or-break season Giants strike deal with first-round pick before minicamp This is the first time the Giants will get to see how it looks when they are (almost) all put together. Starting Tuesday, all or close to the entirety of the 90-man roster will be present at the Giants’ team facility for a mandatory three-day minicamp. Prior to this, organized team activity practices attracted about 70 players per session at their peak. The top defensive backs opted to work out elsewhere, but all of them are expected to join their teammates this week. First-round pick Kadarius Toney participated in the rookie camp but not the OTAs and, now that he has signed his contract, figures to be on the field with the veterans. Saquon Barkley continues to rehab from reconstructive knee surgery and is on schedule to commence with individual drills and team work later this summer. He will not take part in the minicamp. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has said President Joe Biden's first 100 days 'have been impressive' and 'exceeded' the expectations of Democrat progressives.  The New York congresswoman said during a virtual town hall meeting: 'The Biden administration and President Biden have definitely exceeded expectations that progressives had. 'I'll be frank, I think a lot of us expected a much more conservative administration. 'While there are areas of just plain disagreement, I think that the actual conduct of the administration has been in good faith and active incorporation of progressives.'  AOC specifically praised the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan to help the country recover from the coronavirus pandemic.  But she said the infrastructure legislation that's being shaped right now will be will be a 'key indicator' if the administration is 'raising its ambitions or if the ARP was a one and done situation.'  She said: I think the infrastructure bill is too small. I have real concerns that the actual dollars and cents, and programmatic allocations of the bill, don't meet the ambition of that vision, of what's being sold.  Rep. New York (CNN Business)Business leaders in America face a conundrum that could ultimately limit their ability to influence the debate over voting rights. For companies to make a difference, they need to take tangible action — not just voice support in newspaper ads and press releases. But the more action they take, the more they risk a backlash from customers, shareholders and politicians that will ding the bottom line. "Companies realize that if they are too outspoken, that will inevitably piss off some of their customers. Why do that?" said Greg Valliere, chief US policy strategist at AGF Investments. "Therefore, they have to be pretty discreet."Recent history shows that many high-minded statements from big business, however well-intentioned, have ultimately lacked teeth. Former President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the Paris climate agreement even after leading CEOs quit his advisory panels in protest. Likewise, business leaders boycotted Saudi Arabia's "Davos in the Desert" conference after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi — only to return in force in subsequent years with the regime more powerful than ever. KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) — Harris English once was considered a part of the future of American golf. He won a Nationwide Tour event while he was still at Georgia. He had two PGA Tour titles when he was 24. His demeanor was ideal for golf, never too bothered my much and steady with his emotions. That now seems like a long time, and it was. English had gone 192 starts on the PGA Tour over seven years since he last won, a drought that ended with a series of clutch shots that carried him to a playoff victory Sunday in the Sentry Tournament of Champions. “It’s awesome to get some validation,” English said. In some respects, it represents a restart to a career that could take him places he hasn’t been. The victory took him to a career-best No. 17 in the world, and he doesn’t want to stop there. “I’m still not satisfied with where I’m at in the game. There’s still a lot more that I want to accomplish,” English said. “Hopefully, this is just the tip of...
SAN ANTONIO – The holidays are fast approaching and due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 Christmas season will likely look different than what many families are used to. Thanks to the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Special Collection of digital photographs, we can go way back into the past and see how San Antonians have celebrated the Christmas holiday as far back as 1877. There are a variety of photos that range from the interior of the San Fernando and St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedrals circa 1877 all the way up to a 1970s nativity from the Institute of Texan Cultures.View the gallery of historical photos below:Full Screen1 / 12Christmas tree and miniature village in parlor of Heinrich Carl and Hulda Wetzel Seele, 433 E. IF you've ever wanted to see the Northern Lights you may be in luck this evening. Stargazers in the UK and the US have a small chance of seeing the spectacular natural light display that's actually a very pretty geomagnetic storm. 3The Northern Lights has previously been visible over Alaska in the US Credit: AP:Associated Press There is still the chance for the #NorthernLights to glow on Thursday night over Canada and the far northern U.S. where skies are clear: https://t.co/nYovDhZ6YY pic.twitter.com/TOk0aBIknT— AccuWeatherAstronomy (@AccuAstronomy) December 10, 2020 This is according to meteorologists who have been monitoring the particles in the air that allow the Northern Lights to be visible. The Northern Lights, also called the Aurora Borealis, were predicted to peak on December 10 and in the early hours of this morning but could be visible for another 24 hours, according to Time Out. The Northern Lights are technically millions of charged particles that have been pushed away from the Sun at one million miles per hour by solar winds. When these particles react with molecules in Earth's atmosphere they...
After working with Andrew Thomas in the months leading up to the 2020 NFL Draft, Paul Alexander is absolutely baffled at how much the Giants rookie tackle is struggling in his start to his career. Alexander, who has coached some great players in his 28-year career as an NFL offensive line coach, saw exactly why so many thought Thomas would be an immediate contributor in the league when the Giants selected him with the No. 4 pick. Now that Thomas is leading the NFL in quarterback pressures allowed, Alexander is wondering what happened. “I’m going to be candid here, because I’m really upset for Andrew on this,” Alexander told SNY after watching Thursday’s Giants-Eagles game in Philadelphia. “What I saw [Thursday] night, I see completely different techniques than he used at Georgia. I don’t see his feet getting set. And I see his hands bouncing all over the place, like he’s punching a guy like a machine gun or something. “When he was at Georgia, he controlled guys with his hands. So I see something completely different than I saw...

It feels like a a lifetime, but it was just more than a month ago that Seattle destroyed Minnesota to the tune of a 90-66 final to drop the Lynx to 1-1 on the season. And no one batted an eye. The reality was the Storm were perceived title favorites and the Lynx were considered to be a fringe playoff team. One of those has held true: Seattle has been the best team in the league to date. But Minnesota, with just four games to play in the regular season, clinched a playoff spot long ago and enter Sunday’s titanic tilt with the Storm as one of the WNBA’s top four teams. “It’s been so long; we’re a completely different team,” Reeve said in reference to the first meeting. “I think every coach would tell you that they’re very different than their second game.” The Lynx have certainly changed for the better. They started the season reliant almost solely on defense and rebounding to contend. Those areas are still strengths. Minnesota is third in defensive rating for the season and...
Dom Smith kneeled before Wednesday night’s game and wept afterward. He took a knee in solidarity and symbolism. And he cried in pain and fury. How are we still here? How are black people, especially black men, still being used as target practice by police? How, after all the attention on George Floyd and Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, was Smith in a postgame Zoom reacting to Jacob Blake rather than Jacob deGrom? To see a decent young man try to find the words and composure was to wonder how we still are having a debate on this issue. What is the other side of this argument? It is so easily lost in the color war that this country fights endlessly, but besides being black these are Americans who are being kneeled on and choked and shot seven times in the back. If an American were shot seven times in his back in a foreign country, we would not think for a second what color he was. We would be in unified horror and outrage, frothing for retribution. So when...
Players on both teams take a knee before the first game of the abbreviated 2020 baseball season. Somehow, 2020 seems to have just barely begun, and also to have been 10,000 years long. Does anyone remember the United States squaring off with Iran in an abortive war that involved American missiles blowing up a Iranian general and Iran mistakenly blowing a Ukrainian airliner out of the sky? Yeah, believe it or not, that was this year. Adam Schiff’s impassioned speech to the Senate, leaving everything on the field as he begged for a single witness before Republicans handed Donald Trump a free pass? Also 2020. Trump getting the president of South Korea to ferry a birthday card to Kim Jong-un? Nancy Pelosi demonstrating how she felt about Trump’s state of the disunion? Both 2020. Things actually happened before we descended into virus-Confederate statue-murder hornet stew. But the year that was is definitely not the year that is … and it’s a long, long way from what’s coming next. It’s hard to exaggerate just how terrible 2020 has already been. It’s also hard to exaggerate how...
