LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4) – Longmont Police arrested a man following an hours-long standoff and domestic incident which started on Tuesday night. Officers responded to a home on Northwestern Road after a neighbor reported several people were arguing outside of the home in question. (credit: CBS) A second witness told police a woman was strangled by her boyfriend. When officers arrived, two women involved described injuries they received from an assault. They say 58-year-old Jesus Magallan was inside the home, armed with a handgun. Officers learned the suspect had several felony convictions, including a felony menacing charge in Boulder County from 2012. After nearly 10 hours of negotiating with Magallan, the Longmont SWAT team arrested him at around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday. He now faces new charges of domestic violence, second and third degree assault and possession of a weapon by a previous offender. Police say there was no direct threat to the public during the ordeal.
Vladimir Putin sent 'several' submarines into the north Atlantic hours after putting his nuclear forces on 'special' alert over its invasion of Ukraine, it has been revealed. British navy chiefs believe Russia's decision to move the submarines, which are capable of carrying 16 ballistic missiles each, was an act of 'posturing' rather than an all-out threat. Despite them returning towards Russia shortly afterwards, western intelligence agencies have kept the Kremlin's nuclear arsenal - believed to be the world's largest at 4,477 warheads - under constant surveillance. John Kirby, the Pentagon spokesman, said he has not yet seen any indication that Russia is preparing to use the weapons but that has done little to reassure jittery world leaders, particularly in the West, after Putin used a fire-and-brimstone speech as he declared war on Ukraine to make a thinly-veiled nuclear threat. Analysts believe Russia's use of the nuclear weapons found on the submarines is 'unthinkable' but some believe the use of shorter range 'tactical' missiles - which are intended to destroy specific targets rather than whole cities - is possible.   'The majority of...

The websites that appeared to be down included the Kremlin website, Kremlin.ru, as well as the website for the State Duma, the lower house of the Federal Assembly of Russia. It is unclear why the websites are down or whether this occurred as part of a third party attacking the websites. A distributed-denial-of-service attack hit the websites for the Ukraine Defense Ministry and several banks on Feb. 15, an attack that Ukraine and White House officials suspect to originate with Russia. La Palma's volcano suddenly stopped erupting this morning - before restarting several hours later with 'explosions' heard miles away.  The brief hiatus, during which volcanic activity dropped off almost completely, sent scientists scrambling to work out what it means - amid warnings that the eruption is not over and could simply be entering another new phase. Volcanologists theorised that a vent could have become briefly blocked or that underground channels may be shifting, possibly diverting lava elsewhere and opening up a new vent. Meanwhile, new lockdown orders were issued for three areas today as lava that has already been expelled from the volcano continued to trickle towards the ocean.   Angel Victor Torres, president of the Canary Islands, said molten rock may reach the ocean 'within hours' where it will release a cloud of poison gas as it mixes with sea water - warning nearby residents to stay in their homes with their windows locked. Those who are directly in the path of the lava flow have already been evacuated. EU weather satellites captured the first clear image of La Palma's volcano...
Sacramento — Ohio's Wright-Patterson Air Force Base went into lockdown for several hours while security officials investigated reports of a shooter on the campus, but they eventually gave the all-clear early Friday morning. Two individuals reported hearing one gunshot at the base just east of Dayton just after 9 p.m. Thursday, said Col. Patrick Miller, the Installation Commander at Wright-Patterson AFB. The report initiated a series of events leading to the lockdown. Over the next four hours, officials from the 88th Airbase Wing said, responders conducted two sweeps of the National Air and Space Intelligence Center, a three-story, 850,000-square-foot headquarters for the center described as the Department of Defense's primary source for foreign air and space threat analysis. The lockdown was lifted with the announcement of an all-clear around 1:40 a.m. No threat was identified and no injuries were reported, Miller said. It was unclear whether the sound the two individuals heard was a gunshot. Miller declined to speculate on what caused the sound. The sweeps of the NASIC involved multiple people so responders could...

An individual in California who tested positive for COVID-19 in late December and was vaccinated Thursday died several hours after receiving the shot, the Placer County Sheriff's office announced Saturday.  "There are multiple local, state, and federal agencies actively investigating this case; any reports surrounding the cause of death are premature, pending the outcome of the investigation," the sheriff's office said.  It is unclear if the individual received the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine.  CALIFORNIA CORONAVIRUS VACCINE ROLLOUT LAGGING BEHIND MOST STATES Some people have had allergic reactions to the COVID-19 vaccine, though severe allergic reactions remain extremely rare. Last week, California State Epidemiologist Dr. Erica S. Pan recommended that providers halt the administration of one lot of the Moderna vaccine "out of an extreme abundance of caution" after it caused an allergic reaction in less than ten people.  "While no vaccine or medical procedure is without risk, the risk of a serious adverse reaction is very small," the California Department of Health wrote. "While less data exists on adverse reactions related to the Moderna vaccine, a similar vaccine shows that the expected rate...
Just like the speakeasys of the Prohibition-era 1920s, illegal nightclubs stocked with booze, music and more are sprouting up amid COVID restrictions in New Jersey, including two that Paterson police raided this past week.  Two raids in Paterson over the weekend followed one less than a week earlier in Englewood. Music from an illegal club that stayed open till 5 a.m. could be heard by police who pulled up behind a small Park Avenue shopping center in Paterson, Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale said. Sgt. Mohan Singh and Detectives Thomas Giaquinto and Salvatore Macolino were all in uniform when they entered the club through the rear door off Carroll Street, "which was open and had a security guard posted at the door for security purposes," around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, he said. They found several patrons at 10 tables, each with a lighted hookah that collectively filled the room with smoke as a DJ spun music blasted through large speakers, Speziale said. Various liquor bottles were submerged in buckets of ice at several tables, where patrons drank openly, he said. None...
