The Oscar for Best Picture is set to be handed to the lowest grossing top movie in the award show's 93 year history on Sunday evening.   The night's top prize is widely expected to go to Chloé Zhao's Nomadland starring Frances McDormand.   Should it be victorious, it will become the lowest grossing Best Picture ever after making around $2.5 million Deadline reports. That's a record currently held by Kathryn Bigelow’s 2009 title The Hurt Locker which grossed $17 million.   It will also be one of the lowest budget best-picture winners ever. Zhao's film, populated by mostly nonprofessional actors, was made for less than $5 million. Her next film, Marvel's Eternals, has a budget of at least $200 million. Even if it does not take home the top gong, the other movies nominated in the category also saw low returns at the box office.  The biggest ticket-seller of the best picture nominees is Promising Young Woman, with $6.3 million in box office.   Judas and the Black Messiah is said to have grossed $5.4 million, Minari $2.57 million and The Father $1.6 million.  Mank,...
It was all about the Latina divas — Jennifer Lopez and Shakira — last year, back when there was no such thing as social distancing happening between J.Lo and J Balvin. But the Super Bowl 2021 halftime show was all about pop’s great man of mystery: The Weeknd. After a year in which he bloodied and then completely bandaged his face, and then appeared to have plastic surgery — all for the sake of his art — The Weeknd was ready for his close-up on the biggest stage in the biz. And with his old mug back, all that you could feel was his music — with a string of hits such as “Can’t Feel My Face” and “Blinding Lights” that have anointed him as the heir to Prince and Michael Jackson in his era. But it was also clear from his halftime show — for which The Weeknd poured in $7 million of his own money — that the artist born Abel Tesfaye, still only 30, is not yet in the same league as a live performer as...
ONE of the year’s biggest and most brilliant meteor showers this year, the Geminids, will peak on Sunday night. The meteor shower with more than 100 multi-colored shooting stars is lighting up the sky from Dec. 4 to 17, but NASA advises that Dec. 13 will offer the most spectacular display. 3The Geminids will peak on Sunday nightCredit: Getty Images - Getty “The peak will happen on the night of Dec. 13 into the morning of Dec. 14, with some meteor activity visible in the days before and after," NASA stated in a blog post last week. Activity will peak around 2am local time in the Northern Hemisphere, and after midnight in the Southern Hemisphere.  Viewers in the Northern Hemisphere could spot one flashy Geminid per minute, or about 60 per hour.  However, the Geminids are capable of producing 150 meteors per hour. 3The Geminids may appear blue, green, yellow or redCredit: Getty Images - Getty The shimmers in the sky may be blue, green, yellow and red, and travel around 78,000 MPH. “Yellowstone” is the show of the year for three seasons running. After I declared the Paramount Network hit show the best product on TV in 2018 and 2019, I’m here to crown it the champion for the third year in a row! (REVIEW: ‘Yellowstone’ Ends Season 3 With One Of The Greatest Cliffhangers In TV History) That’s right, folks. “Yellowstone” season three was the best show of 2020.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Yellowstone (@yellowstone) Obviously, this shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. If you’re reading this article right now, then it probably means you’ve already watched “Yellowstone” many times over. While I’m not sure season three matched the greatness of season one, it did give fans the greatest cliffhanger in the history of TV. For the cliffhanger alone, “Yellowstone” easily beat out the rest of the 2020 shows to win the prestigious honor for the third straight year.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Yellowstone (@yellowstone) The show about the Dutton clan is truly unlike...
"Claire" the Scottish deerhound has been crowned Best in Show at the 2020 National Dog Show, beating out hundreds of other pooches for the prestigious title. The competition, which aired Thanksgiving Day but took place earlier this month, was held without spectators due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a press release from the show.  Earlier in the competition, the Scottish deerhound won the Hound Group, which consisted of 28 breeds, NBC Sports reports, including the Afghan hound and the dachshund.  After besting her group, "Claire" battled it out against the six other group winners to win the biggest prize of the day. She defeated the standard poodle from the Non-Sporting Group, the Portuguese water dog from the Working Group, the miniature American shepherd from the Herding Group, the wire fox terrier from the Terrier Group, the English springer spaniel from the Sporting Group and the affenpinscher from the Toy Group, NBC Sports reports.  So Pure ❤️ The Scottish Deerhound is the Best in Show at the #NationalDogShow pic.twitter.com/M45ein5v4G— NBC Sports (@NBCSports) November 26, 2020 The English springer spaniel took...

The 2020 Emmys gave host Jimmy Kimmel and presenters an unusual challenge. Thanks to the pandemic, the ceremony had to proceed with none of the usual pomp and circumstance of a live audience. Here’s a breakdown of what worked — and what flubbed — during the 72nd Emmy Awards. Best: The screen room Jimmy KimmelInvision/AP Host Jimmy Kimmel, 52, opened the ceremony by delivering his monologue to an apparently full audience sans masks or social distancing that confused viewers at home. However, he soon revealed it was old footage (with the real audience being a mix of empty chairs and cardboard cutouts), and then he moved into a room filled with an entire wall of screens showing this year’s nominees video-conferencing in remotely. It presented a striking visual and set the scene appropriately. Worst: The postal service bit Jimmy Kimmel and Anthony CarriganABC Before the best comedy director category, Kimmel did a bit with “Barry” actor Anthony Carrigan posing as a Russian “mailman” delivering the envelopes to announce the winners. It’s hard to grasp what this unfunny and tedious skit...
It wasn’t the way it used to be. Then again, nothing is in 2020. After the 2020 MTV VMAs were moved from Barclays Center to various outdoor locations in the city — as well as remotes from Los Angeles and, for K-pop sensations BTS, South Korea — it was clear that this wasn’t going to look or feel like any other VMAs. And it didn’t. As the first major live awards show in the COVID era, it didn’t have the same energy that we’re used to from one of the biggest nights in show biz. But still, the show — hosted by “Hustlers” actress-singer Keke Palmer — had to go on. And thanks mostly to the Weeknd, who won Video of the Year for “Blinding Lights,” and Lady Gaga, who picked up the most Moonpersons with four, it had its moments. But in the end, like much of 2020, this will go down as a VMAs to forget. Best: The Weeknd’s speech The WeekndMTV The Weeknd didn’t need to do anything else after his show-opening performance that set the bar...
Here’s one thing coronavirus can’t cancel. The annual Perseid meteor shower, which NASA calls the best meteor shower of the year — and which inspired singer John Denver to write “Rocky Mountain High” nearly 50 years ago — peaks early this week. Depending on the weather and where viewers watch, the celestial spectacle could deliver as many as 50 to 75 shooting stars per hour over California and much of the United States — with the most expected between Tuesday night after sunset until to the early hours of Wednesday morning. “The Perseids are a reliable meteor shower,” said Andrew Fraknoi, emeritus chairman of the astronomy department at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. “And it’s in August, when we have warm summer nights, when most kids aren’t in school. It’s a great time for families to be able to go outside and take a look.” The Perseid meteor shower, first documented by Chinese astronomers in 36 A.D., is visible every year between late July and mid-August. But the “shooting stars” aren’t really stars. The meteor shower occurs every year...

Like health care workers, educators have one of the most important (not to mention difficult) jobs in the country—and between closing schools early, switching to online learning, and the mounting pressure to reopen classrooms in the fall, teachers are certainly deserving of a gift, from an end-of-year congratulations to a “just because" pick-me-up.
