Scores of passengers aboard the Ruby Princess cruise ship became sick with COVID-19 on a San Francisco to Hawaii voyage that ended last week and followed a trip to Panama in which dozens of passengers also were stricken with the virus on the same ship. The San Francisco Department of Public Health said 143 passengers aboard the Ruby Princess’ San Francisco to Hawaii round trip that ended April 11 tested positive for the virus, nearly twice as many as the 73 reported sick with COVID-19 after the ship’s March 27 return to San Francisco from Panama. “It was quite clear that there were a large percentage of passengers that were sick, but unless you self-reported, you were free to keep going and infect other passengers,” said Ted Vomacka of Antioch, who said he was among the passengers who tested positive on the ship and was forced to quarantine in separate quarters from from his wife, Larisa, who eventually tested positive after they returned home. Vomacka and other passengers said they weren’t told about the outbreak as it was spreading on...
Russia has suffered the loss of yet another senior officer after the captain of a large Black Sea landing ship was killed in the war in Ukraine.   Captain Alexander Chirva died from wounds sustained in a battle with Ukrainian defenders, said the Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev. His death is just the latest in a string of high-profile deaths for the Russian military, coming on the heels of seven generals already killed in action since the war began. Ukraine claims a staggering 20,800 Russian troops have been lost overall. Chirva was a 3rd rank captain from a naval family who leaves behind a wife and a son. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Chriva's funeral was held in the Crimean city of Sevastopol, where he was from. He was commander of the large, 370 ft landing ship Caesar Kunikov, capable of carrying ten main battle tanks plus 340 troops part of the Black Sea Fleet. It is thought that the Caesar Kunikov was damaged during a Ukrainian missile attack on landing ships unloading supplies at the strategic port of Berdyansk on March 24, but it is...

The Oakland Athletics continue to ship their best players elsewhere this offseason. This time, the San Diego Padres snagged Sean Manaea. Per Mark Feinsand, the Athletics are dealing Manaea to the Padres, a team that could use some pitching depth considering lingering injuries to the likes of Mike Clevinger. San Diego intends to contend this season, while Oakland does not. Sometimes it’s that simple. San Diego has been active in trade talks lately, as just Saturday the Padres tried shipping Eric Hosmer’s contract to the Mets. The A’s still have the likes of Frankie Montas, who could be an intriguing trade target come the deadline. Another vessel ran aground in the Suez Canal today briefly blocking the global shipping lane before it was refloated - nearly six months after the Ever Given was grounded for six-days in March.  The container ship became stuck around 54km into the canal, sparking a rescue effort earlier today, the Suez Canal authority said according to local media reports.  Four ships travelling from Port Said in the direction of Suez were delayed while rescue teams scrambled to refloat the vessel in western al-Balah branch of the canal. Sources told the National it was 'minor' issue. Sky News later reported the ship, thought to be the Panamanian-flagged Coral Crystal, had been refloated and traffic resumed. It is understood to have been sailing for Port Sudan.  It comes nearly six months after the Ever Given became wedged in the canal causing a six-day rescue operation and stopping £42billion of world trade.  Another vessel ran aground in the Suez Canal today temporarily blocking the global shipping line nearly six months after it was blocked for six days by the Ever Given (pictured) The...
A female sailor who worked on the COVID Navy ship USNS Mercy is at the center of the investigation into the fire on board USS Bonhomme, that was allegedly set by a 'bipolar' seaman who'd told friends they were engaged until he dumped her for getting pregnant by another man.  Seaman Apprentice Ryan Sawyer Mays, 20, has been charged with setting the fire on board the Bonhomme last July. His attorney says he had nothing to do with it and he is awaiting a preliminary hearing.  The ship was docked in San Diego last summer when someone set fire to it. The blaze lasted five days.   Newly unsealed documents this week shed more light on the Navy's case against Mays, who dropped out of SEAL training shortly before the fire.  During a ten hour interview with Navy investigators, he told them that he'd been in a romantic relationship with Petty Officer Armelle Ane.  He said they were engaged, that he had proposed at a French restaurant, and that the relationship ran into trouble when she was deployed to the UNSN...
Russian fighter jets have been filmed 'buzzing' a US spy plane over the Black Sea in the latest standoff between Moscow and western powers in the contested region.  Footage released by the Russian Defence Ministry showed two Sukhoi Su-30 fighters flying close alongside a Boeing P-8 Poseidon of the US Navy on Tuesday evening. The Kremlin said fighters were scrambled as the plane approached its airspace and blocked in from 'violating the state border'. It did not say where precisely the intercept happened, though it is likely to have been close to Crimea - which Russia considers to be part of its territory but western powers say is Ukrainian territory that has been illegally occupied by Moscow's forces. Then, on Wednesday, Russia said it is tracking a Spanish warship in the Black Sea amid joint Ukraine-NATO military exercises in the region which Moscow has condemned as a 'provocation'. It comes exactly two weeks after Russian warships and fighter jets shadowed British warship HMS Defender as it sailed close to the coast of Crimea, with Moscow claiming warning shots and bombs...
(CNN)In March, world trade was thrown into chaos by a boat. The Ever Given, a container ship nearly as long as the Empire State Building is tall, ran aground in the Suez Canal in Egypt. It was stuck for six days, disrupting global supply chains. In an effort to avoid a repeat of the event, in mid-May, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) announced it had started dredging work to widen and deepen the southern part of the canal where the Ever Given was jammed. The 30-kilometer-long area will be widened by 40 meters (131 feet) to the east and deepened to 72 feet, up from 66 feet, according to the SCA. Plans also include extending the second lane near the Great Bitter Lake, which opened in 2015, by 10 kilometers (6 miles) -- allowing two-way traffic along an 82 kilometer (51 mile) stretch. The work is intended for "maximizing the canal's efficiency and shortening the vessels' transit time, as well as raising the navigation safety," said a press release from the SCA. But there are still questions as to whether...
SHIPS looked like they were hovering off the British coast today in yet another mind-bending optical illusion. The vessels were captured in Minster on Sea, Kent, this morning, leaving onlookers baffled. 5The 'floating ship' was spotted off the Kent coastCredit: Alamy 5Another vessel appeared to hover above the waterCredit: Alamy The ships appeared to be floating in the sky, well above the horizon and seemingly out of the water. But a rare optical illusion is to blame for the bizarre appearances - which follow a string of similar sightings over the last couple of months. The same thing happened in Minister on Sea back in April. And one man in Falmouth, Cornwall, was left "extremely baffled" just weeks before when he spotted a large vessel apparently floating just above the waves. Days earlier, several cruise ships were also seen "hovering" above the waters off the coast of Paignton, Devon Then Colin McCallum spotted a large red "floating vessel" on the horizon as he travelled through Banff, Aberdeenshire. The phenomenon - known as Fata Morgana - is created when the...
THE skyscraper-sized ship which is blocking the Suez Canal crashed into a small ferry two years ago. Last week, the 400-metre-long Ever Given - which is as big as the Empire State Building - smashed into the bank of the shipping lane blaming high winds but was partially refloated this morning. ????Follow our Suez Canal live blog for all the latest news and updates 8The Ever Given, which became stranded in the Suez Canal last week, was involved in another crash in 2019 8The monster ship smashed into a small ferry in Hamburg injuring one person It has now emerged that the same monster container ship had another serious maritime accident in 2019 which was again blamed on strong winds. Operated then and now by Taiwan shipping firm Evergreen, the giant boat crashed into a small ferry sparking a criminal probe in Germany. However, the investigation did not find fault with the ship's captain, reports the Wall Street Journal. On February 9, 2019, the Ever Given ran into the Finkenwerder, a 75-foot pleasure boat. Oil prices jumped on Friday, amid speculation that dislodging the ship could take weeks. West Texas Intermediate crude futures and Brent crude each advanced more than 4%. The gains come after prices dipped on Thursday, despite the gridlock. "Traders, in a change of heart, decided that the Suez Canal blockade is actually becoming more significant for oil flows and supply deliveries than they previously concluded," said Paola Rodriguez-Masiu, vice president of oil markets at Rystad Energy.A satellite image shows the Suez Canal blocked by the stranded container ship Ever Given in Egypt March 25, 2021, in this image obtained from Twitter page of Director General of Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin. ANOTHER mind-bending photo appears to show a ship floating in the sky. A bizarre optical illusion is to blame for the spooky sightings - which have stretched the length of the country. 6A mind-bending photo appears to show a cruise liner floating in the skyCredit: SWNS:South West News Service The latest image shows a massive cruise liner 'hovering in mid-air' in Lyme Bay between Devon and Dorset. Dave Medlock spotted the boat as he was out walking his dog on Sunday. He said: "It looks like something from Back to the Future, but I know it's a special type of mirage." Despite looking like it was floating, the boat was actually in the water. It appeared to be suspended due to a phenomenon known as a superior mirage. This causes an image to appear above where it really is, making this P&O cruise ship look like it's flying. Another top aide of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is leaving the administration as the governor tries navigating his way through multiple high-profile scandals. Press secretary Will Burns, who has been working with Cuomo’s administration for nearly three years, announced this week that he was planning to step down and leave the executive chamber. The move came the same day that longtime aide Gareth Rhodes announced that he would be stepping away from the COVID-19 task force that he has been presiding over since the pandemic began last year. Related story - COVID-19: Prominent Member Of Cuomo COVID Task Force Leaving Post No less than six high-ranking members of Cuomo’s administration have stepped away in recent months as the governor contends with scandals involving COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes and multiple sexual harassment claims. Digital Extremes has unveiled a roadmap for the spring of 2021, and it looks like the spaceship mode Railjack will see some major overhauls. During a developer Q&A stream, players learned about some of the next changes coming to the fast-paced looter shooter. The first big update will be Railjack 3.0. The Railjack system launched in an incomplete state, and the developer has been addressing major balance changes since. Railjack 3.0 will include the Corpus enemy faction as well as the Command Intrinsic, which allows players to staff their ship with helpful NPC crew mates and go solo. Another big change is that the host will no longer control all the tools that players on a Railjack have at their disposal; players can bring in their own individual Avionics set-ups, which means that someone can bring their progress to another player’s ship. Intrinsics, the talent points that players spend in categories to become a better gunner, engineer, or pilot, are also being rebalanced and players will get a free respec. Finally, Railjacks will become a little more useful for players...
