SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — A few seats down from Carlos Rodón, there was another newly made nameplate hanging above a locker in the Giants clubhouse Monday morning, when it opened to reporters for the first time in two seasons. Jakob Junis, a 29-year-old right-hander who spent his first five major league seasons in Kansas City, took his spot after signing a one-year contract with the Giants, a move that adds depth and, importantly, flexibility to San Francisco’s pitching staff. Junis signed a major-league deal, worth $1.75 million, but has an option year remaining and is comfortable starting games or coming out of the bullpen. Junis had a 5.26 ERA in 16 appearances — six starts — for the Royals last season and has never bested the 4.30 mark from his rookie season, but in San Francisco he sees an organization that can potentially transform his career, as it has for others under the leadership of pitching coach Andrew Bailey and the rest of its staff. “There were a couple other teams in the mix, but I’m very, very happy that San...
Getty New York Jets edge rusher Bryce Huff sacks quarterback Mike Glennon on August 14, 2021. The New York Giants are running out of time to salvage their season. Perhaps even worse, they are running out of quarterbacks healthy enough to help them try. An injury-ravaged Giants squad traveled to Miami to take on the Dolphins December 5, leaving not only with a loss but also more banged up than they already were. Backup quarterback Mike Glennon was never removed from the game, yet sustained a concussion somewhere along the line. The injury was reported during the postgame press conference and shared via Twitter by Dan Duggan, of the Athletic. And now the Giants say Glennon does have a concussion. — Dan Duggan (@DDuggan21) December 5, 2021 “Giants say that QB Mike Glennon is being evaluated for a concussion,” Duggan posted online Sunday afternoon. “And now the Giants say Glennon does have a concussion,” Duggan followed up in a later tweet.Daniel Jones Could Miss Second Straight Week With Vague Injury GettyQB Daniel Jones, of the New York...
At the end of a 107-win season that culminated with a NLDS loss to the Dodgers, Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi spoke about his desire to maintain roster continuity and keep several of the team’s free agents in San Francisco. Given the success the Giants had and the career years several of their free agents enjoyed, doing so will likely require major financial commitments. As free agency kicks off, we looked at five Giants who are now free to sign with any team and took a look at the expectations for the types of contracts each player may command. Using free agency predictions from MLB Trade Rumors, ESPN and the median crowdsource projection from FanGraphs’ team of writers, here’s a look at some of the industry expectations for Kevin Gausman, Kris Bryant, Brandon Belt, Anthony DeSclafani and Alex Wood. Our Giants beat reporter, Kerry Crowley, also provides his own predictions and analysis on each player’s potential to return to San Francisco. Jon Stewart joined the ManningCast on Monday night and predictable hilarity ensued, though the funniest line during his appearance was perhaps delivered by Peyton Manning. Speaking with the Manning brothers during their EPSN2 telecast of the New York Giants and Kansas City Chiefs game, Stewart – a Giants fan – was frustrated by his team’s performance so far. Facing third and 10, Daniel Jones dumped a pass off for a six yard gain. “There you go,” said the comedian. “Ok, so third and 10, you go for six. That’s the smart play there, wouldn’t you agree, fellas?” Neither Manning brother really took the bait. In addition to Peyton and Eli, their father Archie was of course also a longtime NFL quarterback. Additionally, Archie’s grandson and the Manning brothers’ nephew Arch is considered the top quarterback among American high schoolers. “Can’t you guys make another Manning?” asked Stewart, as he watched his 2-5 Giants punt the ball away trailing 7-0 in the first quarter. “How hard is it to make another Manning? You’ve got this bayou quarterback breeding program down there....
New York Yankees: Aaron Boone to return for three more years William Parlee October 19, 2021 Share on facebook Facebook Share on twitter Twitter Share on reddit Reddit A familiar face will be returning to the New York Yankees next season and beyond. Sources have confirmed to ESPN the Aaron Boone will remain the Yankee manager for the next three years. After not making it to the World Series in four tries, the Yankee organization felt that Boone had done enough to give him to give it another go. After not even getting past the wild card game this season, many thought that Boone’s time with the Yankees was over, but that is not the case, as we found out this morning. Boone has had two 100 plus seasons, the short season, and this year winning just 92 games, but enough to face the Red Sox in the wild-card game in a game they lost to the Sox 6-2. To read more about the debate to rehire Boone go here. Here is...
Serendipity 20th anniversary: The best romantic comedies Facebook Paces Tech Rebound, Renewed Oil Rally Boosts Dow Futures © Provided by NBC Sports Replay Video SETTINGS OFF HD HQ SD LO Skip Ad When conversation has turned to wide receiver John Ross over the years, the two main topics have been speed and injuries. The Bengals took Ross in the first round of the 2017 draft after he ran the 40 in 4.22 seconds at the Scouting Combine, but his opportunities to show off that speed in Cincinnati were limited by injuries. He only played 27 games in four years and left for the Giants as a free agent this offseason. Ross opened the season on injured reserve, which suggested that the change of scenery didn’t solve the staying healthy problem. Ross was activated before Sunday’s game in New Orleans and he showed his speed is still there in the second quarter. Ross beat the Saints secondary and reeled in a 52-yard touchdown pass from Daniel Jones, but he also showed some other skills later in the game. Ross had...
Getty The Giants traded for more offensive line help in former fourth-round pick Ben Bredeson. The Giants are doing everything they can to scramble for interior offensive line depth with the regular season just 11 days away. On Tuesday, they acquired guard/center Ben Bredeson from the Baltimore Ravens via trade in exchange for a 2022 fourth-round draft pick. The Giants also received a 2022 fifth-round choice and a 2023 seventh-round selection from the Ravens, along with Bredeson. This trade came less than 24 hours after the Giants sent defensive lineman and former 2018 third-round pick B.J. Hill to the Cincinnati Bengals for guard/center B.J. Price. The Giants dealt their conditional seventh-round 2022 draft pick to the Bengals in exchange for Price. And after it was discovered by Dan Duggan of The Athletic that projected starting left guard Shane Lemieux has a partially torn patellar tendon in his knee, Bredeson and Price could find themselves playing more significant snaps for the Giants this season. Bredeson was drafted by the Ravens in the fourth-round of the 2020 draft at pick...
Holed up in their Californian mansion, enjoying some well-earned quiet family time, you could be forgiven for forgetting that The Duke and Duchess of Sussex even exist. Apart from a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, umpteen megabucks deals with streaming services and publishers and holding the world record for Zoom calls, we’ve barely heard a peep out of them. What a relief then, that their biographer Omid Scobie has revealed Harry and Meghan are about to enter ‘a new era of visibility’. Here, Claudia Connell looks back at what might be termed their ‘annus invisibilis’ and suggests it’s a wonder we can even remember what they look like . . .  August 2020: Finding me-domVisible moments: 12 Finding Freedom, the book that told the story behind ‘Megxit,’ that Meghan absolutely did not co-operate with was released at the start of the month Finding Freedom, the book that told the story behind ‘Megxit’, which Meghan absolutely did not co-operate with, was released at the start of the month, making it hard for the couple to keep the low profile they so desperately...
About halfway through a 2019 season in which the Giants used a franchise-record 64 players, fans slowly began to understand Farhan Zaidi’s approach to building a roster. At the time, the first-year president of baseball operations wasn’t yet a popular figure in San Francisco as he hadn’t yet been forgiven for handing outgoing manager Bruce Bochy an Opening Day roster that required him to start Connor Joe and Michael Reed in the team’s outfield. But as the Giants worked their way through a 19-6 July, Joe and Reed were long gone while Mike Yastrzemski, Alex Dickerson and Kevin Pillar used extended opportunities to become mainstays in a revamped outfield. Through a roster-building strategy that enabled the Giants to take chances on overlooked players and others who simply needed major league playing time to prove themselves, an organization that had long struggled to develop homegrown talent in the outfield suddenly had building blocks for the future. Yastrzemski, who spent six seasons in the Baltimore Orioles’ farm system without playing a major league game, went from an unknown prospect to...

Beckham wore out his welcome and never became legendary, and neither did Ben McAdoo, the head coach at the time. Now, here we are, five years and two new head coaches and one new general manager and one new franchise quarterback and one pandemic later, and as training camp 2021 begins, it is time for the New York Football Giants to remember who and what they are expected to be around here. The Giants will be celebrating and honoring their Super Bowl 46 team because it is the 10-year anniversary. A decade that feels like an eternity in and around 1925 Giants Drive....
LOS ANGELES — Throughout the first half of the season, the Giants pointed to a disciplined schedule for catcher Buster Posey as a significant factor in his success at the plate. Posey has rarely started three consecutive games, doesn’t have enough at-bats to qualify for a batting title and has only sparingly appeared as a pinch-hitter on days when he’s been out of the starting lineup. With the Giants looking to secure their first postseason berth since 2016, discussions have begun about when Posey will begin to play more frequently. “I think we’ll have that mindset there is going to be a time to push Buster,” manager Gabe Kapler said this week. “But we’re going to evaluate what that time is not based on the schedule necessarily or the opponent, but more on what we feel like his body can withstand given how many games are remaining on the schedule.” After a disappointing start to the season offensively, backup catcher Curt Casali has been a valuable offensive performer since returning from a stint on the injured...
The New York Giants got so much more than they asked for with Logan Ryan Alexander Wilson July 1, 2021 Share on facebook Facebook Share on twitter Twitter Share on reddit Reddit When the New York Giants originally signed Logan Ryan to a one-year deal after rookie Xavier McKinney suffered a broken foot in training camp last year, they didn’t anticipate the impact the veteran defensive back would have on defense. Ryan, having spent seven years in the NFL with the New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans, brought a wealth of experience to a young Giants defense in need of a leader. Ryan not only provided stellar defensive production last year but offered his wisdom to youngsters like McKinney and a rotation of corners at CB2. Ryan covered up many of the deficiencies the defense portrayed in 2020, utilizing a unique disguised safety strategy to confuse opposing play-callers and quarterbacks. However, the Giants viewed the veteran as an integral piece to the puzzle this off-season, rewarding him with a three-year, $31 million deal with...
Whenever the Baseball Hall of Fame comes up in conversation, it’s almost always due to some sort of controversy, disagreement or debate. I have my issues with Cooperstown, the selection process and the lack of transparency, but one of my greatest concerns is there’s no easy path to honor some of the people who have made the biggest contributions to the sport. Last week, I used our Friday installment of Giants HQ to celebrate Willie Mays, the oldest living Hall of Famer, one of the greatest players ever and an icon who transcends generations. This week, I want to acknowledge another famous Giant who enjoyed a birthday celebration this month in Felipe Alou. Alou, a former teammate of Mays who shared the outfield with him at Candlestick Park, is not enshrined in Cooperstown. His 17-year playing career was outstanding, but with 2,101 hits, 206 career home runs and only three All-Star nods, his numbers don’t stack up with the very best of his generation. After his playing career, Alou spent 14 seasons as a major league...
It’s been more than 18 months since Giants fans last saw a minor league box score, but that will change soon. With the cancelation of the 2020 minor league season due to the coronavirus pandemic, baseball prospects took a wide variety of approaches to stay in shape and continue chasing their dreams and the time to resume official games is finally near. As minor league affiliates prepare to start hosting games in early May, Giants prospects are training at the team’s Sacramento alternate site and at the club’s spring training complex in Scottsdale where highlights of their greatest feats have turned into must-watch social media content. The Giants are using an official farm system Twitter account, @SFGProspects, to show how prospects are performing in spring exhibitions, which is generating plenty of fan excitement and interest in the future of the organization. Heliot Ramos, the Giants’ 2017 first round draft choice, stole the show during spring training with an outstanding performance in Cactus League play and he’s continuing to make a strong impression at the team’s alternate site....
After making three more cuts on Sunday, the Giants have 31 players left in camp and only a handful of decisions to make before setting their Opening Day roster. The club optioned outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. to minor league camp Sunday in a move that suggests the team is confident first baseman Brandon Belt will be ready to go by Thursday’s season-opener in Seattle. With Wade now in minor league camp, the Giants have 13 position players including Belt left on their major league spring training roster. The Giants also reassigned pitchers Scott Kazmir and Shun Yamaguchi to minor league camp, leaving San Francisco with 18 pitchers on the roster. Kazmir does not have an opt-out clause in his contract and is expected to open the year at the Giants’ alternate site while Yamaguchi, who was released by the Blue Jays in February, does have an opt-out clause. It is unclear if Yamaguchi will exercise the opt-out clause and pursue an opportunity elsewhere or remain in the Giants organization. Last week, Giants president of baseball operations...
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Two of the most interesting pitchers in Giants camp this spring are scheduled to make their Cactus League debuts on Friday against the Rockies. The reasons everyone in the organization will be watching Kevin Gausman and Scott Kazmir closely couldn’t be more different. Gausman, 30, is a potential ace, the right-hander who received an $18.9 million commitment from the Giants to return in 2021 and pitch at the front end of the team’s rotation. With a high-90s fastball, a fluttering split-fingered changeup and a work-in-progress slider, Gausman is in the prime of his career and the Giants are expecting him to provide stability and consistency for a starting staff that lacked those qualities last year. At this stage of his career, Kazmir is far from an ace, but he’s no less intriguing. At 37 years old, it’s possible he’s already thrown his last major league pitch. If that’s the case, a start he made for the Dodgers all the way back in 2016 will be the end of the line for the three-time All-Star....
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Mauricio Dubón is not like the rest of us. When Dubón decided to gain weight this offseason, he cut out frequent trips to McDonald’s. That’s right. When Dubón’s daily caloric intake spiked to 4,300 during the winter, he was avoiding fast food at all costs, noting Friday that he can’t remember the last time he scarfed down a Big Mac. He’s pretty happy about it, too. “I just hit a ball 450 feet in live (batting practice) so that’s something that’s good,” Dubón said. “I’m moving really good. I feel I’m faster and more explosive. Last year, I was 168 (pounds) playing the season and now I’m 182 and you can see a big difference.” Dubón is sturdier and can tap into the power in his legs better from the right-handed batter’s box. He has more zip on his throws across the diamond from shortstop to first base. And he doesn’t need to be hitting at Coors Field to launch the ball over the fence. “I think it’s probably one of...
EFE Latam Videos In search of the largest titanosaur known in Argentine Patagonia Buenos Aires, Feb 9 (EFE) .- 100 million years ago, just beginning the Upper Cretaceous, Argentine Patagonia was a very different place from the one we know today. Dotted by many rivers, lakes and huge trees, this region was home to the largest animals that ever lived on Earth: titanosaurs. This group of sauropods, characterized by their long necks and dimensions of up to 40 meters in length, could soon add a new member, after a group of researchers found in Neuquén (western Argentina) the remains of what may be the largest known land dinosaur. “Due to the measurements we are taking, it is an animal that would be somewhat larger than the Pagotitan mayorum, which together with Argentinosaurus and Puertasaurus occupies the first place of the largest dinosaurs,” explains José Luis Carballido, one of the paleontologists responsible for the discovery. A TWENTY OF VERTEBRAS The first remains of this new specimen were found by Carballido and his companions in 2012, in the Candeleros geological formation, as...
