by Elizabeth Stelle and James M. Hohman   It’s official, COVID-19 is no longer a crisis. According to a recent Axios poll, only nine percent of Americans believe COVID is a serious crisis. Yet the economic destruction caused by lockdowns lingers. Nowhere is that more obvious than in Michigan and Pennsylvania. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Gov. Tom Wolf wielded immense emergency powers to shut down large parts of the economy, actions unprecedented in the 246-year history of the United States. According to federal data, just 11 states have more jobs than they did at the start of the pandemic. Meanwhile, another 20 states are down less than three percent and could easily recover their jobs this year if current trends hold. It is no coincidence that neither Michigan nor Pennsylvania fall into either of these ranks. Michigan’s Whitmer and Pennsylvania’s Wolf enacted the strictest lockdowns in the country. They issued orders that forced more than 30 percent of all businesses to close. That’s near twice the closures of the median state. The results: phenomenal job loss, soaring unemployment, and some of the weakest recoveries nationwide. Two...
Tenured law professor Amy Wax has come under fire for making racist comments during an online interview with a fellow academic A tenured professor at the University of Pennsylvania has come under fire for making racist comments during an online interview with a fellow academic - and it's not the first time she's faced backlash for such remarks. 'The United States is better off with fewer Asians and less Asian immigration,' law professor Amy Wax brazenly declared in a December interview with Brown University's Glenn Loury. The off-color comment came during a conversation between the two academics concerning US immigration. 'It’s just harder to assimilate those people or to have confidence that our way of life will continue if we bring a lot of people in who are not familiar with it. These are not original ideas on the [political] right,' Wax told Loury on his web show, which covers topics ranging from academia, journalism, and various social issues.  'This might result in a shift in the racial profile of people who come in,' Wax went on. 'Obviously, we'll have...

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Despite the higher vaccination rate, the CDC says there’s a “substantial” level of COVID-19 transmission in parts of our area. Officials say it’s mostly driven by the fierce Delta variant and is mainly impacting people who aren’t vaccinated. There are breakthrough cases and that’s forcing governments and businesses to act. READ MORE: Woman Shot While Crossing Street In Hunting Park, SUV Struck By Gunfire, Philadelphia Police Say “I wasn’t shocked but I was worried,” University of Pennsylvania Dr. Fredric Bushman said. “The rest of the country like New York has seen Delta spreading aggressively a little ahead of us. Evoire Collier, 21, and Dorian Taylor, 24, have been detained since March in connection with the death of 24-year-old Christine Englehardt. At the moment, Collier and Taylor face accusations of sexual assault, robbery and assault. Investigators contend that on March 18 the duo drugged Englehardt before raping her. Later, his cell phone and credit cards were stolen. Security camera footage held by authorities shows the men walking with the victim to her hotel that night. They drugged her with fentanyl and ethanol before raping her, authorities allege According to the report of the Miami-Dade coroner’s office, the woman died face down and under the influence of fentanyl and ethanol. The men gave him a green pill similar to oxycodone. After...

Today, the Labor and Industry Department is launching a new text message feature that will help staff connect with people. The department says they’ll be sending text messages to individuals to let them know that staff will be calling them. They say the goal of this new system is to increase the rate that individuals answer calls from the Labor and Industry Department. (CBS Local)– A new HBO series about Pennsylvania is coming to HBO. Archbishop John Carroll High School and Villanova University alum Brad Ingelsby created a new limited series called “Mare of Easttown” that stars Academy Award winner Kate Winslet and tells the story of a detective in a small Pennsylvania town who investigates a local murder while trying to keep her family life and personal life intact. The show was shot in Chester County and Delaware County and Ingeslby wanted to give the nation a snapshot of the area that he called home for so many years. CBS Local’s DJ Sixsmith talked with Ingelsby about growing up in PA, working with Winslet and what TV watchers can expect when the show debuts on April 18. (AP) – Nearly half of new coronavirus infections nationwide are in just five states — a situation that is putting pressure on the federal government to consider changing how it distributes vaccines by sending more doses to hot spots. New York, Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania and New Jersey together reported 44% of the nation’s new COVID-19 infections, or nearly 197,500 new cases, in the latest available seven-day period, according to state health agency data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. Total U.S. infections during the same week numbered more than 452,000. READ MORE: COVID-19 Testing Down In Pennsylvania As Cases Continue To Climb The heavy concentration of new cases in states that account for 22% of the U.S. population has prompted some experts and elected officials to call for President Joe Biden’s administration to ship additional vaccine doses to those places. So far, the White House has shown no signs of shifting from its policy of dividing vaccine doses among states based on population. Sending extra doses to places where infection numbers are climbing makes sense, said Dr. Elvin H. Geng, a...
By: KDKA-TV News Staff JOHNSTOWN (KDKA) — TSA agents are known for helping keep people safe when they travel at our area airports, but one local officer is taking an extra step to keep people safe — by helping dozens and dozens of seniors schedule COVID-19 vaccine appointments. Donna LaMonaca is a Supervisory TSA Officer at Johnstown-Cambria County Airport, who has recently helped more than 60 senior citizens schedule appointments to receive COVID-19 vaccinations and even drives some of them to receive their shots. LaMonaca initially helped some of her elderly relatives make appointments who didn’t have computers. That led to some of their friends asking for her help as well. Helping people with this has become second nature for LaMonaca, with more than 50 people securing appointments over the past three weeks. LaMonaca sets alarms in the middle of the night for 12:30 a.m., 2:30 a.m., and 4:30 a.m. because she has found those to be the times that new appointments are made available through vaccination sites and local pharmacies. With her family computer, laptop, three cell phones, and...
The mother-of-eight dubbed the 'Bullhorn Lady' who gave instructions to her fellow MAGA rioters with a megaphone has been arrested for her part at the Capitol insurrection on Jan. 6.  Rachel Powell, 40, was charged with obstruction, depredation of government property, entering a restricted building with a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct. An arrest warrant was issued for the Pennsylvania woman on Feb. 3 and she was arrested the following day. Police raided the woman's home Thursday but local reports indicate that she was not at the residence at the time. Rachel Powell, 40, was charged with obstruction, depredation of government property, entering a restricted building with a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct for her role in the Capitol riots Charging documents say that Powell was a part of the group of rioters who used a large pipe 'as a ramming device to breach windows of the Capitol to gain access.' According to a criminal complaint that included several grabs from video and cell phone footage, Powell 'is clearly seen speaking through a bullhorn and giving very detailed descriptions...
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Some vaccine distributors have spent the past few days sifting through full voicemail boxes and rebooting crashing websites after the Pennsylvania Department of Health unexpectedly expanded Phase 1A of the vaccination plan. The phase now includes people 65 years and older, as well as people 16 to 64 with high-risk conditions. It appears the announcement prompted the new additions to Phase 1A to seek out a vaccine at their local distributors. (Photo Credit: KDKA) Jeff Wilson, the owner of Wilson’s Pharmacy in Bloomfield, said he didn’t know about the announcement ahead of time and was bombarded with calls. “This morning, I walked in, “he said, “our answering machine was full. Three lines were just ringing off the hook.” While more Pennsylvanians are looking for the first available vaccine, Wilson said he ran out of his supply on Wednesday. He added while his store has received a steady supply of vaccines and consistent communication from the state, the last week has been frustrating. “Towards the end of last week, I asked for 1,000 doses and they couldn’t give...
HARRISBURG (KDKA/AP) – Phase 1A in Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 vaccination plan is expanding to align with federal guidelines, Deputy Health Secretary Cindy Findley announced Tuesday. Phase 1A, which before included long-term care facility residents and health care workers, now includes anyone over the age of 65 and anyone ages 16-64 with serious medical conditions that make them more at risk for severe illness. “It will be challenging because we haven’t received additional vaccines doses,” Findley said. Effective today, were expanding our #COVID19 #vaccination efforts in Phase 1A to include anyone over 65 and people ages 16-64 with serious medical conditions that make them more at risk for severe illness. At least 62 Americans are now infected with 'super-covid,' according to a DailyMail.com tally.  Texas and Pennsylvania each reported their first cases on Thursday, while a new federal CDC dashboard shows that Florida's cases of the highly contagious UK variant have exploded to 22.  The CDC says there may be more US cases than the 52 counted by its database, but that many have been confirmed by the federal agency, according to CNN.   California has at least 34 cases, with a cluster of 32 reported by San Diego County and two infections with the new variant reported by San Bernardino County.    A total of 38 US cases have been identified, including one in each Pennsylvania, Florida, Georgia and New York, two in Colorado and 32 in California, where there is a cluster in San Diego.   At least seven states have cases of the B117 variant, a CDC official told DailyMail.com this earlier in this week. Today's reports from Texas and Pennsylvania bring the state count to seven but the official said it's likely to crop up in others in the coming weeks....
Hundreds of Planned Parenthood staff members and advocates are calling on the director of its Pennsylvania chapter to resign over claims of racism, transphobia and mismanagement.  The Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania Advocates (PPPA) this week released a scathing open letter demanding Executive Director Emily Callen, 30, step down. Callen, who is white, has been the head of the women's healthcare organization's Pennsylvania division in Philadelphia since March.   According to the letter written by her entire staff, Callen during her nine-month tenure had been 'fiscally irresponsible', used racist, transphobic and classist language as well as language 'which perpetuates stigma against abortion.' Eric Trump and Rudy Giuloni have been sent to Pennsylvania by Donald Trump to resolve this whole mess. The president’s eldest son said Democrats were trying to “cheat” in the state, in which his father’s voting lead was declining as votes were counted. Meanwhile, Borat 2 star Rudy Giuliani said that Pennsylvania is disgraceful in voting dead people, and it is not. After coming to the state, Eric said: “This is a complete fraud. We saw this in Philadelphia. They are trying to make fun of this country’s election.” There is no evidence of widespread electoral fraud anywhere in the United States, including Pennsylvania.read moreRelated Articlesread moreRelated ArticlesHe added: “Democrats know that the only way they can win this election is to cheat in Pennsylvania. “We have been watching it since day one. Voters line up to cast their in-person absentee ballots at the Berkeley County Library on Oct. 30, 2020 in Hanahan, South Carolina. After months of priming his cultists for claims of Democratic election fraud, Donald Trump and Republicans are preparing to deploy their army of lawyers to challenge the votes of as many voters as necessary to potentially change the outcome of the election. “As soon as that election is over,” Trump told reporters last weekend, “we’re going in with our lawyers.”  On Mobilize America, there are hundreds of campaigns and local Democratic parties organizing (mostly virtual) get-out-the-vote activities. Find one near you, and connect with members of your community while doing work to turn out the Democratic vote! In fact, both Republicans and Democrats have organized hundreds of lawyers to fight the legal battles Trump has been previewing rhetorically at his rallies and elsewhere. Meanwhile, state Republicans have been actively working to keep votes in Democratic strongholds from even being counted.  In Texas' Harris County, home to Houston and a huge Democratic voting population, Republicans have already brought legal...
