MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Investigators say they have arrested a mother and are charging her in the death of baby, found in Lake Pepin almost 20 years ago. The baby boy was discovered at the Methodist Campus Beach in Frontenac in December 2003. Jennifer Madder, 50, of Red Wing, was named as the mother in the case, and was taken into custody Monday morning. She faces second-degree murder charges. Investigators say that another baby, a girl found in the Mississippi River’s Lower Boat Harbor near Red Wing back in 1999, is also Madder’s, as proven by genealogy work. The charges announced Monday do not involve that case, and further charges may be pending. The touchdown catch is months old. The emotion is still raw. Valley Christian football star Jurrion Dickey and his mom, Sherri Brockett, were invited to appear on The Kelly Clarkson Show this week as part of the host’s “#What I’m Liking” segment. Last summer, in a 7-on-7 game, a video of Dickey’s winning touchdown reception went viral because instead of celebrating with teammates, he weaved his way off the field to embrace his mother. “Every time I cry,” Clarkson said after showing the video. “It’s like, ‘Where is he going?’ He went straight to his mom. It was the sweetest thing ever.” Dickey, one of the Bay Area’s top college prospects in the Class of 2023, and his mom appeared on Clarkson’s show via video. “I can’t even tell you, that breaks my heart in the best way,” Clarkson told Dickey and his mom. MARTINEZ — After a week of deliberations, a Contra Costa jury returned murder verdicts against three men charged in the 2016 fatal shooting of an East Bay musician, a crime authorities originally alleged was racially motivated. Ray Simons, 36, Daniel Ortega, 35, and Daniel Porter-Kelly, 35, were all found guilty of murdering 28-year-old William Sims, who was shot and killed outside the now-defunct Capri Club bar in El Sobrante in 2016. The case was originally charged as a hate crime, until a grand jury rejected that enhancement a year later. Simons, who killed Sims and argued at trial that he was guilty of manslaughter, not murder, was convicted of first degree murder and faces life without the possibility of parole. Ortega and Porter-Kelly were convicted of second-degree murder and face a sentence of 15 years to life. The month-long trial ended last week with three days of closing arguments, where the prosecutor, deputy district attorney Aron DeFerrari, went through the final night of Sims’ life. Sims was attacked in the back of the bar, beaten so extensively he suffered a...
