Getty Larry Bird looks on during the 2018 Basketball Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony. Larry Bird hasn’t set foot on an NBA court as a player in 30 years. Yet his legacy as an NBA legend remains infallible even to this day. The league confirmed as much with its most recent development. On May 12, 2022, the NBA announced that they will be handing out Most Valuable Player Awards to the winners of the Eastern and Western Conference Finals. Not only that, but they will also name both awards after two of the league’s greatest players. While the Western Conference Finals MVP will be named after Magic Johnson because of his success as a player with the Los Angeles Lakers, the Eastern Conference Finals MVP will be named after Bird because of his success as a player with the Boston Celtics. According to Christopher Arena, the NBA’s Head of On-Court and Brand Partnerships, the league made this decision because they wanted their trophies to have meaning behind them. We wanted to explore and start a new 75 years...
BOSTON (CBS) — The NBA announced some big changes to its postseason awards on Thursday, including new trophies that will be given to the MVPs of the Eastern and Western Conference Finals. Those two trophies will fittingly be named after a pair of legends: Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. It’s hard to imagine two better players to have their names adorning those trophies. Bird and Johnson brought the NBA back into the spotlight in the 1980s, carrying their collegiate rivalry to the famous Celtics-Lakers rivalry. NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA’s championship trophy has a new look, and the league will hand out some new trophies for the first time during these playoffs. The league unveiled a slightly redesigned Larry O’Brien Trophy on Thursday, plus announced changes to the Bill Russell NBA Finals MVP trophy and changes to the design of the conference championship trophies. And four of the game’s legends now have their names on NBA hardware. The Eastern Conference championship trophy has been renamed for Bob Cousy, the Western Conference championship trophy for Oscar Robertson. And for the first time, there will be MVP’s of the conference finals — the East finals MVP will receive the Larry Bird Trophy, the West finals MVP will receive the Magic Johnson Trophy. “The NBA Conference Finals represent the last hurdle a team must face for an opportunity to make it to the big stage, the NBA Finals,” Johnson said. “I’m truly honored to have my name memorialized on the Western Conference Finals Most Valuable Player Trophy.” The most visible change is to the Larry O’Brien, the...

SACKED boss Jose Mourinho is the biggest barrier between Spurs and that elusive first trophy in more than a decade. That is after the North Londoners qualified for Uefa’s new third-tier competition. 3Tottenham will be in the inaugural Uefa Europa Conference League next seasonCredit: Reuters 3New Roma boss Jose Mourinho will be aiming to stop his former club ending their trophy droughtCredit: PA Two years after playing in the Champions League final, Spurs will be contesting the inaugural Uefa Conference League next term. Uefa President Aleksander Ceferin today posed with the impressive-looking new trophy. It brings European football back to having three competitions for the first time since the Cup Winners’ Cup was abolished in 1999. And despite widespread mockery, it does present Tottenham with a genuine trophy chance - and the opportunity to repeat their 1972 achievement of winning European silverware in its first season in existence. Back 49 years ago, Tottenham beat Wolves in a two-legged final after overcoming AC Milan in the semis. And next term, Mourinho’s new Roma side are Italy’s representatives. The Special One...
Instant reaction to Pac-12 developments on and off the court … 1. Dam Impressive Picked 12th in the preseason media poll and seeded fifth in the conference tournament, Oregon State beat No. 4 UCLA, No. 1 Oregon and No. 3 Colorado in succession to claim the trophy in Las Vegas and the automatic bid to March Madness. OSU coach Wayne Tinkle out-dueled Mick Cronin, Dana Altman and Tad Boyle in succession to reach the NCAAs for the first time since 2016. He did it with a roster that was vastly better than many expected — guilty! — but also not comparable to those at the top of the conference standings. Did we mention that the Beavers were 25/1 to win the tournament? Oregon State certainly benefitted from Arizona’s self-imposed tournament ban. Had the Wildcats participated, OSU would have been been seeded sixth and forced to win four games in four days. Without the Wildcats, the format was reconfigured. The Beavers received an opening-round bye and only had to win three in three. That’s a huge difference. And yet, make no...
Commentary on Pac-12 developments on and off the field, plus a dose of Hotline transparency … Rising: Wideouts Alabama’s DeVonta Smith on Tuesday became the first receiver to win the Heisman Trophy since Michigan’s Desmond Howard in 1991. Smith did it handily, collecting twice as many first-place votes as the runner-up, Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. One of those votes came from yours truly. In keeping with Hotline tradition — and more importantly, in the ongoing interest of Hotline transparency — here’s the ballot I submitted to the Heisman Trust in the middle of December: 1. Alabama WR DeVonta Smith 2. BYU quarterback Zach Wilson 3. Florida tight end Kyle Pitts Smith was the best player in the country, in my estimation, and it wasn’t close. He averaged 16 yards per catch and nine catches per game, in addition to scoring 20 touchdowns and producing countless big plays as the Crimson Tide blasted its way to an undefeated season. More broadly, my ballot reflected a tweaked approach to the voting process. In a typical year, I place heavy emphasis on performance...
The late start and shortened season create challenges, but the star power of Buckeyes quarterback Justin Fields is a benefit few contenders can match. Trevor Lawrence keeps making his Heisman Trophy case, Spencer Rattler now has to figure out how to rebound and the SEC’s cast of contenders are set to test their staying power. Costello, who threw for an SEC-record 623 yards in Mississippi State’s opener or Trask and his 416 yards for the Gators, maintaining those paces for 11 games would be stunning and completely dwarf that projected stat line for Fields. But if we look at Lawrence, who is trending toward 3,114 yards and 24 touchdowns after two games, the Clemson junior would still have nearly 1,100 yards more than the Buckeyes passer. Are numbers that are almost guaranteed to be lower accumulated in an easier and shorter schedule going to be used against Fields? The reality is history doesn’t give us much to use as a guide. Missed time has long been a detriment to any candidate, but this isn’t a matter of injury limiting how...
Separating the Heisman Trophy contenders from the Heisman pretenders among the SEC Heisman hopefuls who begin their season this weekend. The curtain lifts on the SEC season Saturday, and with that first glimpse begins the jockeying for position of those trying to follow Joe Burrow and deliver the conference back-to-back Heisman Trophies. Harris could get that kind of workload again, but Alabama has too many weapons — see Smith and Waddle, who are even further back in the trophy contender list — and an aforementioned quarterback who’s generating attention. That’s not a formula for Harris to give the Tide a third win in this race by an RB.BUY: Kellen Mond, Texas A&M QBThe flashes have been epic as Kellen Mond threw for 430 yards in a nail-biter against Clemson in 2018, 353 vs. South Carolina that year and burned Auburn for 335 last season. He enters his final year in College Station with the most career yards (7,329) of any SEC passer, and he’s in line to become the leading passer in Aggies history, but Mond has yet to capitalize...
