For the second time this week, seeing a playoff contender on the night of an opposition back-to-back set has meant not seeing stars for the Miami Heat. On Monday, it was getting the Philadelphia 76ers a night after they lost at home to the Toronto Raptors, with coach Doc Rivers holding out Joel Embiid and James Harden. The Heat failed that test, falling 113-106 at Wells Fargo Center. Wednesday night, in what could have been a showcase moment at FTX Arena, the Heat learned mid-afternoon that the Golden State Warriors, already without sidelined guard Stephen Curry, were opting to hold out Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, Otto Porter and others, after falling Tuesday night on the road to the Orlando Magic. Golden State coach Steve Kerr, who has adopted the approach in previous tight scheduling windows, hinted at the move in the wake of the 94-90 loss to the Magic. For the Heat, it created another night of finding their own motivation as the schedule winds down to the April 10 close of the regular season and April 16 start of...
The mayor of New York, Eric Adams, is encouraging anyone who has crossed paths with Sarah Palin in the last couple of days to get tested for covid after the former Governor of Alaska tested positive for the virus, yet refused to quarantine.  Palin, 57, was seen dining at two restaurants in Manhattan restaurants as well as walking along busy city streets. It forced the city's new mayor to urge New Yorkers who came into contact with her to get tested for the coronavirus.   'We encourage any New Yorker who came into contact with Sarah Palin to get tested, just as we encourage all New Yorkers to get tested regularly, especially those who believe they may have been exposed to COVID-19,' Adams said through spokesman Jonah Allon said.  'By repeatedly flouting CDC guidelines, Ms. Palin has shown a complete disregard for the health and safety of small business workers and her fellow patrons,' a spokesman for New York City Mayor, Eric Adams, said Palin was seen on Wednesday night with a group of friends, eating at around 10pm on...
Donald Trump's former campaign manager has said he was pressured to lie about the then-president by special counsel Robert Mueller's investigative team. Paul Manafort, 72, spoke on Wednesday night to Fox News' Sean Hannity for the first time since being pardoned by Trump more than a year ago. Manafort was charged in 2017 with conspiracy against the United States, making false statements, money laundering and failing to register as a foreign agent for Ukraine. Manafort - a globetrotting lobbyist famed for representing dubious characters such as Congolese President Mobutu Sese Seko, Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines, and Nigerian coup leader Sani Abacha - was the figurehead for accusations that Russian President Vladimir Putin helped elect Trump.  Manafort was accused of working with Russia to help Trump win the election - something which was never proved, and he has always denied. In August 2018, he was found guilty of filing false income tax returns, failing to report his foreign accounts, and bank fraud, and he spent a little of a year in prison before being released to house arrest in May 2020,...
Senate leaders Chuck Schumer and Mitch McConnell held talks through the night on Wednesday as they work to hammer out a deal to raise the nation's debt limit ahead of an October 18 deadline. The two sides are nearing agreement and working on the final details to raise the nation's borrowing abiliites in order to avoid the government defaulting on its debt and triggering a financial crisis.  'We're making good progress, we're not there yet, but I hope we can come to an agreement tomorrow morning,' Schumer told reporters late Wednesday night in the Capitol.  Senate leaders Chuck Schumer I(above) and Mitch McConnell held talks through the night as they work to hammer out a deal to raise the nation's debt limit The light in the cupola of the Capitol Dome is illuminated, indicating that work continued in Congress overnight on Wednesday A vote on the matter could come as early as Thursday, which would allow the Senate to pivot to President Joe Biden's $3.5 trillion budget package of social programs.  McConnell backed down from the Republicans' hardline position and...
New York City mayor Bill de Blasio has warned residents to be alert for heavy flooding overnight Wednesday - after being slammed last week for failing to alert the city ahead of deadly storm Ida.  The remnants of Hurricane Ida hit the city last Wednesday night, with 13 NYC residents dying in flash floods. But the mayor has been slammed for his poor response, after he failed to alert the city and only declared a state of emergency after the bodies of seven residents - including a two-year-old boy - were found in flooded basement homes. At his daily presser on Wednesday, de Blasio seemed keen to cover his bases and not get caught off guard again. The National Weather Service has forecast possible scattered rainstorms and heavy downpours as a cold front passes through the New York area late Wednesday and predicted half an inch to 1.5 inches average storm total rainfall, estimating the reasonable worst case rainfall is two to 2.5 inches.  But despite the comparatively small amount of rain projected, de Blasio was keen to warn people to 'take...

On Wednesday night, the Los Angeles Lakers and Oklahoma City Thunder will face off in what should be a fun Western Conference tilt.  With the NBA campaign in full swing, the Los Angeles Lakers have once again let the world know they’re ready to compete for another NBA Finals title. After winning things last season, LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Co. have been outstanding this year and are hoping to capture the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference. The team has a big showdown on Wednesday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder, who would love nothing more than to upset LA. So, who will come out on top? As of this writing, the Lakers are in second place out west with their 19-6 record. Unfortunately for Oklahoma City fans, the team has been disappointing this year, as they’re 10-13 and sit in 14th place of the conference. As you might expect, James and the Lakers are considered heavy favorites for the Wednesday night tilt. The Thunder will need to play perfect basketball if they want to pull off a...
Night Owls is a themed open thread appearing at Daily Kos seven days a week. Derek Thompson at The Atlantic writes—Superstar Cities Are in Trouble. The past year has offered a glimpse of the nowhere-everywhere future of work, and it isn’t optimistic for big cities. Some evenings, when pandemic cabin fever reaches critical levels, I relieve my claustrophobia by escaping into the dreamworld of Zillow, the real-estate website. From the familiar confines of my Washington, D.C., apartment, I teleport to a ranch on the outskirts of Boise, Idaho; to a patio nestled in the hillsides of Phoenix, Arizona; or to a regal living room in one of the baroque palaces of Plano, Texas. Apparently, many of you are doing the same thing. Zillow searches have soared during the health crisis, according to Jeff Tucker, the company’s chief economist. “We’ve seen online searches for Boise, Phoenix, and Atlanta rising fastest among people who live in coastal cities, like Los Angeles and New York,” Tucker told me. Higher search volumes on Zillow have coincided with a booming housing market in the South and the...
Inauguration security: 25,000 National Guard members in a fortified D.C. Netflix subscriber growth soars past 200 million members Wednesday Night Hockey: Same old concerns already surfacing for Oilers NBCSN’s coverage of the 2020-21 NHL season continues with the Wednesday Night Hockey matchup between the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs. Coverage begins at 6 p.m. ET on NBCSN. You can watch the game online and on the NBC Sports app by clicking here. © Getty Images When a team is lucky enough to have two different MVP winners at the same time — as the Oilers do at the moment with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl — it is usually a Stanley Cup contender. Think of the Penguins with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, the Avalanche with Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg, or even going back to the old Bruins days with Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr. It is a rare thing to have that sort of foundation, and most teams do not tend to waste it if they can get it. You can never win it all just...
BOSTON (CBS) – If you’re looking for outdoor time this week, Sunday is definitely the day. After the stubborn fog dissipates, sunshine will break out and highs will climb into the upper 50s and low 60s. Not too shabby for mid-December. (WBZ-TV Graphic) Bask in the warmth now, because come Monday, these temperatures will be a distant memory. Highs on Monday will top out in the mid-to-upper 30s. A coastal storm will skirt to the south of New England, with the heaviest precipitation falling out-to-sea. Still, some light snow showers and rain are possible in the afternoon and evening. Total snow accumulations should be less than two inches. (WBZ-TV Graphic) A larger, more significant storm arrives late Wednesday and into Thursday. (WBZ-TV Graphic) While last storm had some questions on the extent of the cold prior to and during the storm, that will not be a problem this storm. The cold air is coming straight from the Hudson Bay with a slight layover north of the Arctic Circle. (WBZ-TV Graphic) It’s still too early to talk accumulations, but plowable snow...
BOSTON (CBS) — It certainly seemed like Raptors head coach Nick Nurse, who was essentially standing on the court, caused Celtics forward Jayson Tatum to make a costly turnover at the end of regulation in Game 6. Tatum wouldn’t blame Nurse after the game, but one of his teammates had no problem calling out the NBA’s Coach of the Year. The play came in the final minute of regulation of Wednesday night’s double overtime thriller. With the score knotted at 98-98, Tatum drove to the basket and kicked the ball to Daniel Theis in the corner. The only issue was he didn’t throw it to Theis, but to Nurse, who was standing in the corner of the court with one foot on the line. Nurse jumped out of the way of Tatum’s pass, and the Raptors took over. A lot happened after that play, but Toronto went on to win in double overtime, forcing a deciding Game 7 on Friday night. Protesters have taken to the streets of Rochester, New York, for the eighth consecutive night to demand justice for Daniel Prude, a mentally ill black man who died during arrest by police officers in the city.  Prude, 41, was arrested in the early morning hours of March 23 running naked through the streets of Rochester.  Handcuffed and sitting on the flood without any clothes on, he had a 'spit hood' placed over his head, and when officers tried to move him, kneeling on his back, he fell unconscious. Prude died March 30 after being taken off of life support. The video of his arrest was released last week, after his family filed a request for police records, and protests - at times violent - broke out in the city.  After several nights of violent unrest, the demonstration of around 200 people on Wednesday night was largely calm. Around 200 people took to the streets of Rochester on Wednesday night, police said A rally in Rochester calling for justice for Daniel Prude was peaceful on Wednesday night A...
Gov. Tim Walz called on citizens to comply with 8 p.m. curfews in place Thursday in the Twin Cities following unrest in downtown Minneapolis the night before, which left dozens of businesses vandalized and looted. Three hundred National Guard soldiers, 250 State Patrol troopers and dozens of officers from other law enforcement agencies flooded into Minneapolis, tasked with keeping the peace that had settled over the city after a night that saw 132 arrests and two police officers injured. It was a scene that, while smaller in scale, echoed the four days of rioting three months earlier, following the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police on Memorial Day. This latest episode of unrest grew out of a false rumor that officers had killed a Black man on Nicollet Mall in the city’s downtown Wednesday evening. That man, who police said was a homicide suspect, had in fact fatally shot himself as police moved in to arrest him, according to surveillance video released by Minneapolis officials. Walz acknowledged the mistrust that many members of the public still...
Former President Barack Obama will deliver a harsh assessment of President Donald Trump from the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia Wednesday night.    There, he'll vouch for his 'friend' and 'brother,' former Vice President Joe Biden, while casting President Donald Trump as a man who has never taken his job seriously or done it well.   'He’s shown no interest in putting in the work, no interest in finding common ground, no interest in using the awesome power of his office to help anyone but himself and his friends,' Obama will say in remarks to the virtual Democratic National Convention. 'No interest in treating the presidency as anything but one more reality show that he can use to get the attention he craves.'  President Barack Obama will address the Democratic National Convention Wednesday night from Philadelphia where he will make a personal plea to Americans to vote for his former vice president, Joe Biden, and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris   Former President Barack Obama will speak from the Museum of the American Revolution Wednesday night as part of...
BOSTON (CBS) — The Red Sox placed Andrew Benintendi on the 10-day Injured List with a right rib cage strain on Wednesday. But the struggling outfielder will be out a lot longer than 10 days. Benintendi injured his ribs while stumbling on the basepath during Tuesday night’s loss to the Rays. X-rays came back negative, but the outlook isn’t great for Benny. “He’s going to be a while,” Boston manager Ron Roenicke told reporters on Wednesday. “It’s going to be more than that 10 days.” It has been a nightmare season for Benintendi, who is just 4-for-39 in his 14 games played. Half of those hits came Tuesday night when he went 2-for-3 before getting hurt. Benintendi is hitting just .103 with a .314 OBP (thanks mostly to 11 walks) for the season. He struck out 17 times in those 30 at-bats. It’s unfortunate that Benintendi went down on the night that he doubled his hit total for the season. “I was hoping with the two hits that he got to start off [Tuesday], that was going to kickstart him...
