The modern dog broke off from its feral cousin, the gray wolf, some 20,000 to 40,000 years ago, but following that ancient family tree has proven difficult, since no living wolf species are genetically very closely related to the domesticated canine. Now, researchers have found your pet puppy's closest known wild relative: the Japanese wolf, which was hunted to extinction more than a century ago. Without live specimens to sample, researchers took genetic material from bones of stuffed wolves on display at museums in Europe and Japan, as well as from some skulls kept on roofs as superstitious charms. Comparing the genome of the extinct species, known in Latin as Canis lupus hodophilax, with a variety of modern wolfs, dogs, foxes and other canids, researchers at the Graduate University for Advanced Studies in Hayama, Japan found the Japanese wolf emerged right at that evolutionary split 20,000 to 40,000 years ago. The data suggest the two species emerged from a single ancestor—a since-vanished population of gray wolves that likely lived somewhere in East Asia.  Some of these descendants evolved into Japanese wolves while...

Wild Dog‘s trailer promised a no-holds-barred account of National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials’ mission to nab Yasin Bhatkal from Nepal. He was responsible for the 2007 Hyderabad serial blasts and the 2010 Pune blast. Nagarjuna in action thriller is something his fans always dream about because the actor makes them look extremely fascinating. Wild Dog is supposed to be the same but it seems while Nagarjuna is garnering a lot of praise, the movie hasn’t managed to live upto critics’ expectations. We have compiled some of them discussing what stopped them from having an immersive experience of this terror-busting premise.  Brahmastra: Nagarjuna Wraps Up the Shoot of Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor’s Fantasy Adventure The Hindu: With some more attention to the writing in the first hour, Wild Dog could have raised the bar higher. Nevertheless, the slick film is a celebration of the unsung NIA officers who made this story possible and of Nagarjuna, who shows that he can still pack a punch in action thrillers, with a mix of brawn, charm and maturity Indian Express: Cinematically, this film is average at best. Because 2020 hasn't unleashed enough horrors, giant lizards from Argentina are invading the southern United States. It’s a ruff time to be a show dog. The 145th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show will take place outdoors this spring, in compliance with government coronavirus restrictions. Instead of the traditional Madison Square Garden location, canine competitors will strut their stuff at the Lyndhurst mansion, a property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in Tarrytown, New York, according to a recent WKC press release. “The wide-open outdoor space at this extraordinary venue allows us to hold a dog show safely while following current social distancing guidelines and public health regulations,” said Westminster Kennel Club President Charlton Reynders III of the decision. Lyndhurst MansionAlamy Stock Photo To ensure spectators and participants won’t be subjected to inclement weather, Westminster Weekend will occur in June rather than mid-winter, when the contest is normally held. The Junior Showmanship, Breed, Group, and Best in Show judging will take place June 12-13. “Due to the ever-changing government restrictions during...
A pack of wild dogs think it's their lucky day when they manage to steal an impala from a leopard that has just caught the beast and is ready to tuck into its meal. But it is a bunch of hyenas that have the last laugh when they chase the dogs away and claim the carcass for themselves. The almost five-minute standoff was captured in incredible footage by visitors to Kruger National Park, one of South Africa's largest game reserves.  It shows the leopard dragging the impala to a secluded spot with a lone wild dog hot on its heels.  The dog circles the animals, yapping as the leopard bends over its prey and attempts to drag the impala further away from the unwelcome lunch guest and perhaps up a nearby tree where it can't be disturbed.  Eventually, the big cat has had enough and chases the irksome wild dog away before padding back to its prey. But seconds later, another wild dog appears, then another and another.  The leopard bounds up a the tree to escape the squeaky cries...
50 years after New Guinea’s songdogs were believed to have become extinct in the wild, the rocky slopes of Papua New Guinea seem to have heard their sounds again. A new genetic analysis suggests that this ancient breed of wild dog still thrives deep in the wilderness of Indonesia. This canine species native to Papua New Guinea stands out for having unique harmonic howls (similar to the song of whales). While a couple of hundred individuals can be found in captivity, Most scientists had assumed that the population had disappeared from the wild since the 1970s. Now, thanks to observations of Highland Wild Dogs in Papua New Guinea, scientists used DNA-based evidence to probe the ancestral relationship between highland wild dogs and captive New Guinea song dogs, discovering that both dogs they are extremely related members of the canine species Canis lupus familiaris. They are the same race, which means that the New Guinea singing dog never became extinct.
